Frank J. MahrMay 18, 1941-Feb. 4, 2015

Frank J. Mahr, 73, Catawba Is-land, passed away February 4, 2015, surrounded by family at Stein Hospice Care Center after a brief illness. Frank was born May 18, 1941, in Akron to Frank J. Mahr and Arnena (Cox) Mahr Sebas-tiano.

After the passing of his father the family moved to Bellevue, later moving to Catawba Island where his mother, Arnena, married Clifford Sebastiano. Frank spent the remainder of his life on Catawba Island. Frank graduated from Port Clinton High School in 1959 and was referred to as the “class treasure” by his class-mates. He worked many years for the Catawba Island Club Marina and owned and operated Mahr Associated Hoist Repair. Frank was a lifelong and active member of the Catawba Island Volunteer Fire Department for 32 years, acting as an EMT, Engineer and Captain.

Frank was intelligent, quick-witted, could tell a tale like no other and he loved to make people laugh. Frank was also understanding and compassionate and always available to help someone in need. He was the patriarch of his family, a mentor to many and a friend to all.

He is survived by his beloved Susan, whom he mar-ried in 1963, and who remained his faithful companion for 52 years. Frank and Susan had 2 sons; Scott, who preceded him in death, and Cary (Paula), who survives. Frank is survived by his grandchildren; Jayson Sijan (Scott) and Taylor, Cameron and Evan Mahr (Cary). Frank is also survived by his brothers Ed (Ceil) Mahr, Cliff Sebastiano and Kevin Sebastiano, many nieces and nephews and his life long friend Niels Keiper (Mar-tha).

Frank was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Arnena, his stepfather Clifford Sebastiano, his son Scott Mahr, his brother Johnnie Mahr, and his sisters Arnena Hamilton (Monty) and Cathy Gresh (Larry) and his nephew Dana Sebastiano (Kevin). He was also pre-ceded by his in-laws (or outlaws, as they were affection-ately referred to) Jackie Sebastiano (Cliff), Larry Gresh (Cathy), Julie Sebastiano and Patricia Logue (Kevin).

There will be a Catawba Island Volunteer Fire Depart-ment ceremony at the Catawba Island Cemetery on Saturday, May 16, at 12 p.m. A luncheon will be held immediately following at the C.I.V.F.D. Please join us as we remember Frank and honor the man that he was.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catawba Island Volunteer Fire Department in Frank’s memory.

On Friday, May 1, the Put-in-Bay Boat Line Co., the Jet Express, started its 26th season in Port Clinton. The first season of operation was spring of 1989 with the vision to create an innovative ferry service that would provide outstanding customer service, late night service to Put-in-Bay, as well as the fastest passenger ferry service on the Great Lakes.

The company began with a new $3.2 million water jet powered catamaran, M.V. Jet Express, and soon added the Jet Express II in 1992. A partnership with the Put-in-Bay Port Authority aided in the addition of the Jet Express III in 2002 and in 2009 a partnership with the Lorain Port Authority brought Jet Express IV to the fleet.

Jet Express service has expanded from the original Port Clinton to Put-in-Bay route to include the mainland ports of Sandusky and Lorain with regular service to Kel-leys Island.

On opening day 2015, village, city, and county represen-tatives along with fellow business community members celebrated with Lance Woodworth, general manager, and the Jet Express family.

Speaking on the mainland in Port Clinton were Jamie Beier-Grant, director of the Ottawa County Improvement Corporation, Port Clinton Mayor Vince Leone and Ot-tawa County Commissioner Jim Sass.

“By the excitement in the air, it’s evident that everyone in Ottawa County is ready for summer and ready for visi-tors to be back,” said Beier-Grant. “People come from ev-erywhere to see what we have to offer here. The health of our lake has a direct correlation with the health of our economy. Today we celebrate the season, we celebrate the Jet Express and we celebrate the entrepreneurs and small business owners providing services to residents and visi-tors. Our footprint on the map is real and we could not do it without our local business owners.”

“Some have said that Port Clinton has only been a park-ing lot for the Jet Express,” said Mayor Leone, “but we have $6 million being invested in our downtown right now. We are much more than just a parking lot.”

After traveling across the lake to Put-in-Bay, Mayor of the Village of Put-in-Bay Ruth Scarpelli, Interim Police Chief Michael Frank and Director of Lake Erie Shores

and Islands Larry Fletcher spoke on the Jet Express dock.“We have made improvements for our residents and our

visitors,” said Mayor Scarpelli. She then introduced the new Put-in-Bay Police Chief Michael Frank. Frank has 35 years of experience in law enforcement and is con-ducting a thorough evaluation of the police department.

Speaking last, and going out with a bang, was Larry Fletcher of Lake Erie Shores and Islands. Fletcher and LESI conducted a Lake Erie Love marketing campaign. The findings showed that the return on investment for the Lake Erie Love campaign brought 1.8 million trips to the area, brought $151 million to the area and generated $4 million in taxes.

“I would like to say welcome to “the season” even though we are a year round destination for tourism,” said Fletcher.

On Friday, May 1, through Sunday, May 3, the Catawba Island Club hosted the 11th annual Progressive Insurance Catawba Island Boat Show. This year there were 35 mer-chant tents as well as 20 different boat dealers.

“We project for three to four thousand people to attend over the three day show,” said Ken Alvey, coordinator of the event. This year the show noted record attendance because of the perfect weather all three days of the event.

“The setting for this show is spectacular,” said Alvey. “We have the finest boats on the Great Lakes and the en-ergy of the people here is over the roof. We have three to four boats here worth a million dollars all the way to inflatables and kayaks; there is something for everyone.”

Bob Adamov was on site signing copies of his new novel Missing and there was live entertainment by Steve Brownell.

Great Lakes Brewing, Catawba Island Brewery and Firelands Winery were on hand for beer and wine tast-ings. The breweries and winery were donating some of their profits to benefit the Lake Erie Marine Trades Asso-ciation scholarship fund. The scholarship helps students who want to go into the marine industry.

“This is a great opportunity to get folks into the water,” said Catawba Island Club owner Jim Stouffer. “This is the best weather of all the boat shows we’ve had.”

Award Winning Wines!

On Wednesday April 29, the City of Port Clinton was recognized as a Tree City USA at the Northwest Ohio awards ceremony hosted by the City of Toledo and their Urban Forestry Commission. This is the 26th time the community has been honored with this nationally rec-ognized award.

The awards were presented to the Tree City USA com-munities by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry at the Toledo Zoo. Mark Bays, Okla-homa State Urban Forestry Coordinator was the keynote speaker.

The title of Tree City USA was bestowed upon the com-

munity for its ongoing efforts to maintain and improve the quality of life through a comprehensive street tree management program. The program is guided be the Tree Commission of the City of Port Clinton as well as the City Administration.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry acts as a guiding hand in helping a community to become qualified as a Tree City USA. The Urban For-ester recommends a community to the Arbor Day foun-dation for this standing. In order to achieve the title and the honors, a community must meet four standards: a Tree Ordinance; an active Tree Commission or forestry

department; a comprehensive urban forestry program supported by a minimum of two dollars per capita; and an annual Arbor Day proclamation and public observance.

The state of Ohio currently boasts the greatest number of Tree Cities in the country with a grand total this past year of 250. This marks Ohio’s 34th year as the Top Tree City USA, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry.

For additional information about the Tree City USA program or the Arbor Day Foundation, visit arborday.org.

On Saturday, May 2, the Erie-Ottawa International Air-port held a Soap Box Derby Gravity Racing Challenge STEM School Race on their runway. There were 20 rac-ers in the derby and there were two divisions: stock and super stock. The event is held to promote the STEM ini-tiative to help increase students’ interest in science, tech-nology, engineering and math.

“The organizations purchase a kit and then the students build the racer as a team,” said Event Manager Morgan Garner.

Dustin Kaniarz of Milan, who was on one of the two teams from EHOVE, said that the best thing about STEM is being able to do hands on experiments.

“In 2010 we started out with one school and two rac-ing teams and 12 students,” said International Soap Box Derby Education Director Linda Hubbell. “In 2014 in Akron we had 120 teams and 1000 students and teach-ers participating. Now, in 2015, we hold races in Akron, Port Clinton, Marysville, Columbus, Culpepper, VA, and Rochester, NY.”

“Teachers and students are seeing the pros of the skills developed in this program. I am excited to see the growth and benefits from gravity racing,” said Hubbell. “We are thrilled to be partnering to provide this to Ohio students.”

In attendance at the cer-emony were representa-tives from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, United

States Customs and Border Protection, Port Clinton Police Department, Otta-wa County Sheriff’s Office, United States Coast Guard, and Port Clinton Fire and Rescue.

“Bless those that popu-late these vessels and ve-hicles. He is always pres-ent on the land and water,” said Father Missler.

On Sunday, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew stopped for lunch at the Tin Goose Diner in Port Clin-ton. The crew of one woman and two men was on their way home after several months of deployment, most re-cently in Cuba. From Port Clinton, they were heading to their home base at Coast Guard Air Station Detroit, lo-cated at Selfridge Air National Guard base near Mount Clemens, Michigan. Though anxious to get home, the crew took the time to visit with children who were at the diner and gave them a tour of the helicopter.

In appreciation for their service, Liberty Aviation Mu-seum CEO Ed Patrick Jr. gave the crew a brief tour of Liberty Aviation Museum, gifted them with Georgie’s Gal t-shirts from the museum gift shop and compli-mentary cheese curds from the Tin Goose Diner (one of the crew was from Wisconsin).

Dan Lucius is proud to call Ottawa County his home. Born and raised here and a 2004 graduate of Oak Harbor High School, Dan is a familiar face in the com-munity. On chilly fall Friday nights you will see him on the sidelines not only cheering, but as a dedicated member of the chain-gang for the Oak Harbor Rock-et’s football team. Dan’s familiar smile is also seen at other community events such as being a part of the Oak Harbor Knights of Columbus #1944. Dan also runs his own lawn mowing and trimming business.

Over the last year, Dan has had many positive changes in his life. He was hired as a part-time stockman at Port Clinton Walmart. He enjoys his job, and eventu-ally hopes he will advance to the lawn and garden department. After helping out last year at the Ottawa County Fair filling water barrels, driving a tractor to smooth out the track and various other duties, Dan’s friends suggested he apply to be a member of the Ottawa County Fair Board. After completing all of the qualifications, Dan was sworn in as the newest member of the Board.

A recent graduate of Project STIR (Steps Towards Independence and Responsibili-ty) and a member of Ottawa County Board of Developmental Disabilities SASSY Group (Self Advocates Sayin’ Something Yeah), Dan finds pride in advocating for

himself. When you ask Dan what his dream is he will tell you that he has want-ed to be a fireman since he was a kid. Dan enrolled in fire school two days a week to fulfill his dream of becoming a volunteer fireman for the Rocky Ridge Fire Depart-ment. Dan commented that the Rocky Ridge Fire Department already has 8 vol-unteer firemen but are always looking for additional volunteers. Once his goal to be a fireman is achieved he hopes in a year or two to go back to school to obtain his EMT license.

With all these groups and activities, Dan still finds time to have a little fun playing basketball on Sunday’s as part of an Oak Harbor Men’s basketball league. He also enjoys competing in Special Olympics (basketball, track, and softball) and spend-ing time with his girlfriend. Dan is excited that summer is right around the corner, as he plans to attend Mud Hen games and travel to Oak Harbor, Washington to visit his uncle. He keeps a full schedule and jumps in where he’s needed. Dan is a great example of a person who has a disability, but is not defined by it. He will show you what he Can Do! Like You, if given the op-portunity.

For more information about the SASSY Group or Special Olympics, contact the Ottawa County Board of Developmental Disabilities at 419-898-0400.

The Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District in cooperation with the Ohio Division of Wildlife. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Ohio Sea Grant Extension in-vite high school students to a one day workshop entitled Field Skills for Future Land Stewards: Fisheries Manage-ment. The workshop will be held on Thursday, June 11, at the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, SR 2 in Oak Harbor, from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

During this workshop, 20 high school students will get a chance to spend a day out in the field with fisheries managers and learn what it is they do. In the morning, the students will participate in trap netting, fish identifi-cation and fish dissection. During lunch there will be an open discussion with many professionals from all aspects of fisheries management as well as a hands on presenta-tion on the Lake Erie water snake. After lunch students will get back in the field to learn more about water quality testing and fish electroshocking.

“I see this as an opportunity for students with a career

interest in conservation to get their feet wet in the realms of fisheries management,” said Becky Simpson, educa-tion specialist for the Ottawa Soil and Water Conserva-tion District. “If you have attended our Day on the Wild-side in the past and would like to learn more in depth field techniques, then this is a great workshop for you.”

Participants should being waders or old tennis shoes, a change of clothes (just in case), binoculars or cam-eras and an appetite (lunch is included). Participants must be in high school starting the 2015 school year. Cost to attend the program is $20 and space is limited to 20 participants. A team of volunteers has coordinated with four cours-es across Ottawa County to create formats and a participation strategy that will be both affordable and worthwhile for the residents of Ottawa County.

The series kicks off on May 16 at the Oak Harbor Golf Club with a two person scramble at 9 a.m. The next event is at Sugar Creek in

Elmore on June 21 where players can choose their own tee time playing in a two, three or four person shamble. The event at Chippewa Golf Club in Curtice will be on July 19 and will be a standard four person scramble. The finale of the experience will be hosted by Ca-tawba Island Club on September 13.

Those who play in tow of the first three earn a complimentary entry into the finale at CIC.

Firelands Symphony launches new youth orchestra

Area string music students are invited to audition this month for a seat in the new Firelands Symphony Youth Orchestra.

The youth orchestra, under the auspices of the Firelands Symphony Orchestra, is open to students in grades 7-12, as well as home schooled children of the same age. The orchestra is supported through dona-tions from the Frost-Parker Foundation and the Randolph J. and Estelle M. Dorn Foundation.

Ron Brooker, concertmaster of the Fire-lands Symphony, will serve as music di-rector and conductor of the Youth Or-chestra. FSO musician and librarian Jody Chaffee will be the orchestra’s general manager.

“We are very excited to be able to offer

this opportunity to students in the Fire-lands area,” said Brooker, a former string teacher for the Findlay and Sandusky city schools. “We hope to enhance the orches-tral experience and overall music educa-tion of the students.”

The Youth Orchestra will practice week-ly in preparation for concerts in the fall and spring. For the first season, only string students are being asked to audi-tion. Wind, brass, and percussion stu-dents will be added for the second season. Auditions for the orchestra will be May 17 and 19 with the first rehearsal scheduled in late September.

Additional information about the or-chestra and auditions can be found on the FSO website, firelandssymphony.com.

Riverview is proud to announce that the facility has become a certified provider for the Music and Memory program, under the direction of our Director of Nursing, Lisa Dobbelare, RN.

Lisa was able to secure grant money from the Ohio Department of Aging (ODA) as well the Ohio Healthcare Association (OHCA). This funding assisted the facility with training costs as well as startup costs for iPod Shuffles and iTunes gift cards.

While the facility is starting this as a small project, the hope is to use on a few residents and expand to multiple through-out the facility. The project was imple-mented with residents on Tuesday, April 27, and has already shown very positive effects on the residents involved.

“The program trains staff how to set up personalized music playlists, delivered on iPods and other digital devices, for those in their care. These musical favorites tap deep memories not lost to dementia and

can bring residents and clients back to life, enabling themselves again, to converse, socialize and stay present,” says musican-dmemory.org.

In honor of National Nursing Home Week, (May 11-15) the facility is offering the 12 Minute Alzheimer’s Test to all staff and family members interested in partici-pating. The test will be offered, Thursday, May 14, 7 a.m.-6 p.m. and Friday, May 15, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on the facility’s Station 5 Lobby. This 12 minute test, gives the par-ticipant insight into what a person living with Dementia experiences every day. During this time, the facility will also be taking donations for the Music and Mem-ory Program (iPod shuffles, iTunes gift cards, or monetary donations).

For more information on the program please contact the Director of Nursing, Lisa Dobbelare 419-898-2851 ext. 6041 or [email protected] or musicand-memory.org.

Ida Rupp Library expandingDemolition is expected at 121 W. Third

Street, located next to the Ida Rupp Pub-lic Library. The house and property were purchased in late 2014 through the gener-ous support of the Friends of the Ida Rupp Public Library.

After review, due to its current condi-tion and accessibility limitations, the house was deemed better suited to be

re-purposed as a green space for outdoor programs, with the eventual possibility of also providing additional parking. Re-maining interior contents of the house were donated, for their use, to Ottawa County Transitional Housing.

It is hoped the re-seeded lot will be avail-able for outdoor programming beginning in the summer.

In observance of National Nursing Home Week, May 10 to 16, Ottawa County Riverview Healthcare Campus, in Oak Harbor, will be hosting several events meant to encourage residents’ families and the community to reach out to and visit with their loved ones and caregivers. In fact, everyone can get into party mode because the American Health Care Asso-ciation (AHCA) designated it as the week to Bring on the Fiesta, which is what we will do.

“Our staff wants to make this a special time of entertainment and education for all while focusing on bringing to life the week’s subtheme of Familia, Vida and Amor (Family, Life, Love)” said Kendra German, Riverview Administrator. “This is a special time. We want everyone to celebrate with residents and patients, en-joying the crowds, the activities, and the feelings engendered by the theme.”

The facility will hold several events to highlight Team Care throughout the week, including:

Sunday, May 10, the facility kicks off this special week, as well as Mother’s Day, with a special Omelet Breakfast for staff and residents from 6-9 a.m. in the facil-ity’s main dining room. Stations 3 and 6 will have their breakfast orders delivered directly to their stations by Riverview’s Administrative team.

The fun continues with the Mother’s Day Tea at 2 p.m. in the facility’s Multipurpose Room, with entertainment by Young Love and a variety of cookies made by the Aux-iliary at Riverview.

Monday, May 11, the facility celebrates Life, by starting the day with residents

enjoying The Game of Life at 10 a.m. At 2 p.m. the staff and residents reveal the photos they have been busy taking for the Photo Scavenger Hunt. Who will win the Pizza Party for their unit or department?

Tuesday, May 12, is Fiesta Day. At 2 p.m., Riverview parties Fiesta Style with piña-tas, margaritas and an intense game of the Mexican Hat Dance Musical Chairs with staff.

Wednesday, May 13, is Family Day, cel-ebrating our Riverview family. The staff and residents will enjoy pizza throughout the day as well as a photo station in the front lobby. At 2 p.m., Riverview invites all employees (past and present), residents and families (past and present) to join the family reunion. There will be ice cream sundae bar, provided by the Auxiliary at Riverview, as well Guess the Baby.

Thursday, May 14, enjoy Valentine’s in May, as the theme of the day is love. The Ottawa County Commissioners will be in to make pancakes for the staff from 6-9 a.m. I Love Lucy will be shown at 10 a.m. At 2 p.m., Hank Fox will be performing love songs. All events on this day will be held in the Multipurpose Room.

Friday, May 15, is Red, White and Blue Day. Everyone is invited to join Riverview and Stein Hospice in honoring our Vet-eran’s with a special ceremony at 10 a.m.

National Nursing Home Week is an an-nual observance sponsored nationally by the American Health Care Association, based in Washington, D.C. and the Ohio Healthcare Association. For more infor-mation on National Nursing Home Week, visit nnhw.org.

Ottawa County Christian Academy’s elementary stu-dents won three individual awards as well as the overall school championship trophy at the 2015 Christian Acad-emies of Northwest Ohio (CANWO) Spelling Bee and Speech Competition held at Temple Christian Academy last Friday.

The competition is for elementary students in kindergar-ten through the sixth grade. A total of 64 students from OCCA, Temple Christian Academy (Fremont) and Harvest Temple Christian Academy (Clyde) competed in the event. Many parents and family members from each school also attended.

“After months of practicing and memorizing, all of our kids did a fantastic job,” event coordinator and OCCA ad-ministrator Jeremy Bickelhaupt said. “For some of the stu-dents, getting up before a crowd is a natural thing and they perform with ease, but for many it’s not that easy. Our goal for this competition is to get students out of their comfort zone and share with others what they have learned. Using

a stage for that really helps increase their confidence.”Both the spelling and speech competitions were broken

into the following divisions: Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd & 3rd, and 4th-6th. Among the winners for OCCA were: Avery Brock (Lindsey), kindergarten speech champion; Austin Marzke (Genoa), 2nd-3rd spelling champion; and Carmen Bickelhaupt (Oak Harbor), 3rd-4th speech champion. Kel-len Bickelhaupt (Oak Harbor) was the 2nd-3rd spelling runner-up.

Laney Renfroe (Kindergarten), Zailey Barr (1st) and Dar-ren Conklin (4th-6th) of TCA were all spelling bee cham-pions. Elijah Hopple was the spelling bee runner-up in the 4th-6th division.

HTCA’s Travis Weirich of Clyde was a speech champion (1st), while Mariah Runkle won the 2nd-3rd spelling title. Kailah Toon and Ava Seal were both spelling bee runners-up in the Kindergarten and 1st divisions respectively.

“Each school was represented well this year,” Bickelhaupt said. “The winners were pretty evenly split among them.”

Students also were awarded ribbons for their speech performances. A three-judge panel issued blue ribbons to those scoring 30-27 points (30 being the highest), red rib-bons for 26-24 scores and green ribbons for 23-20 scores. All scores below 20 received yellow participation ribbons. OCCA’s blue ribbon performances included: Carmen Bick-elhaupt, Nolan Bickelhaupt (Oak Harbor), Luke Hawkins (Oak Harbor), Ruby Henderson (Elmore), and Avery Brock. TCA winners were Zailey Barr, Laney Renfroe and Jer-emiah Goosens. Travis Weirich, Mariah Runkle, Ethan Gates and Gabriel Rodriguez were blue ribbon winners for HTCA.

The overall school championship trophy was determined by the following scoring procedure: schools received five points for every champion represented, one point for ev-ery blue ribbon received and one point for each spelling runner up. The total score is then divided by the number of students competing from that school. OCCA won the trophy for the third straight year, garnering 21 points and a final score of 1.31. TCA was second (.90) and HTCA third (.59).

Migratory songbirds are fast filling the trees and marsh-es along the southwestern shores of Lake Erie.

Few are as brightly colored as the tiny Prothonotary Warbler (less than 5 inches from beak to tail). Formerly known as the golden swamp warbler, these birds nest in wooded wetlands north and east of the Mississippi River. They winter along the western shores of the Gulf of Mexi-co down to the northern shores of South America.

If you live in Ohio, you don’t need to go far to see them. During the month of May, visitors can spot Prothonotary Warblers feeding on insects, spiders and snails at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. One of only two warbler species that nest in tree cavities, Prothonotaries also nest in the wetlands at the refuge.

If you’d like to see these, and some of the more than 300 species of wild birds spotted at the refuge, Ottawa Na-tional Wildlife Refuge staff is ready to help. The Refuge has scheduled several special wildlife viewing opportuni-ties for adults and children through May 17, including free eagle tours and bus tours (reservations please), tram rides, nurture nature days and more.

For more information about these National Wildlife Ref-uge programs, stop by the Visitor Center at 14000 West State Route 2 in Oak Harbor, or call 419-898-0014. The Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center is open every day - except federal holidays.

The Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge Association is re-cruiting volunteers (16 years and older) to participate in a bird nest box project. They’re looking for volunteers to build special nest boxes for Prothonotary Warblers, Eastern Bluebirds, Chimney Swifts, Purple Martins and American Kestrels. They also need volunteers to monitor nest boxes. No experience necessary. They will train you. For more information, call 419-898-0014, extension 11.

Bird Watcher’s Digest editor and co-publish speaking at ONWR

On Tuesday, May 12, Bill Thompson III, Bird Watcher’s Digest (BWD) editor and co-publisher, will be speaking at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge at 7 p.m.

Thompson has been a bird watcher for more than 40 years, much of it in his own backyard. He also di-rects other publications in addition to BWD. He is also the author to numerous books on birds and nature. Thompson has watched birds in 49 states and more than 30 countries.

Each May tens of thou-sands of people come from all across America, and from across the world, to engage in bird watching in the western Lake Erie marshes. During his pre-sentation, Thompson will speak on traveling the globe to watch birds, discuss eco-nomic implications of bird-ing and explain the fascina-tion of birding that many birders share.

Nine to Five breakfast honors students and significant people

The North Point Educational Service Center together with the Ottawa County Cabinet of Superintendents held its 21st Annual Ottawa County Nine to Five Breakfast at Mon Ami Restaurant in Port Clinton. This event was established 21 years ago as a means to recognize stu-dents in grades 10, 11, and 12 who dem-onstrated marked improvement in their educational activities from September (the ninth month) through May (the fifth month), thus the name “Nine to Five.”

Three students from each of Ottawa County’s high schools were recognized. Students were provided with the oppor-tunity to thank the significant person in their life who helped them make improve-ments to their attitude, attendance and overall school performance. In atten-dance were parents and family members, high school principals, superintendents, and elected officials including, The Hon-orable Kathleen Giesler, probate and juve-nile judge, and Ottawa County Commis-sioners Steven Ardent and Jo Ellen Regal.

Oak Harbor High School sophomore Martha Elena Garcia was honored. She selected science teacher Mr. David Thiel as her significant person. Oak Harbor junior Quinn Evan Bodnar selected Agri-culture teacher Mr. Noah Neiderhouse as his significant person, and senior Allison Louise Wolf selected Mrs. Tiffany Wojto-wicz. Each student provided moving re-marks praising the efforts of these signifi-cant people and thanked them for helping them to achieve their goals.

The keynote address at the event was delivered by Mrs. Marie Wittman, Prin-cipal at Oak Harbor Middle School. Mrs. Wittman began the Nine to Five Breakfast 21 years ago when she was a special proj-ects coordinator with the Ottawa County Board of Education. Wittman indicated that it was her goal to recognize students who may not be in the top ten of their class, but who overcame large barriers in their lives and in their school careers to persevere and to find success.

The Annual Oak Harbor and Penta FFA banquet was held on Thursday, April 23. Dinner was served at 5:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium and the awards start-ed at 6:45 p.m. in the auditorium.

FFA members were recognized for all their hard work and accomplishments throughout the last year. Students were honored for earning their Greenhand, Chapater, State or American FFA Degrees. They were also awarded for their academic success, FFA Fruit Sale Fundraising, FFA Camp Scholarships, and Career Development Event success.

Community members were awarded the Distinguished Service Award, Honorary FFA Degrees and Appreciation Awards.

Students also received Leadership Awards such as the Larry Heintz Leadership Award, Sgt. Keith Kline and Cathy Markel Smarkley Leadership Awards, 110% Award, Highest G.P.A. Award, DeKalb Award, Senior Capstone Student of the Year Award, Star Greenhand Degree, Star Chapter Degree and Star Agribusiness Award. We also in-stalled the new 2015-2016 FFA officers.

This year there were over 140 FFA members and 300 guests in attendance for the banquet. All proceeds will help send students to FFA Camp and Washington Lead-

ership Conference.

ICS fifth grade digs history at Johnson’s Island

The fifth graders at Immaculate Conception School spent Monday, April 27, being archeologists. Mrs. Jane Drusbacky’s class had the amazing experience of partici-pating in the Experiential Learning Program in Historical Archaeology offered by the Center for Historic and Mili-tary Archaeology of Heidelberg University.

The students were able to explore and learn about the Johnson’s Island Civil War Military Prison site with Dr. David R. Bush. Dr. Bush is the site director for the John-son’s Island Civil War Military Prison and a Professor of Anthropology. Johnson’s Island held more than 10,000

Confederate officers between 1862 and 1865. During that time, over 10,000 Southern officers found themselves confined on the island. The Confederate Cemetery on Johnson’s Island (the only area publicly owned) contains 206 tombstones commemorating the over 300 prisoners that died while imprisoned here. Prisoners from battles throughout the war ended up imprisoned from weeks to years on Johnson’s Island.

The students were able to dig for artifacts that serve as clues to the activities, health, and living conditions of the prisoners.

Fifth grader, Annabelle Barna sifts through soil in search of pieces of lost history at Johnson’s Island.
