Principal’s News
StaffingWe congratulate Mrs Lockhart who has been appointed as a permanent Assistant Principal at our school. We will be interviewing this week for a Deputy Principal (Acting) for Terms 3 and 4 this year.
P&C The next meeting of the P&C Association will be Wednesday 9 August, commencing at 7.30pm in the music room. Discussion topic for the night will be:
• NAPLAN Online
NAPLAN OnlineThe National Assessment Program-Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Planning has begun to move NAPLAN from a pen and paper assessment to an online assessment. All NSW schools will be involved in a school readiness test. This will occur at our school during the week beginning Monday 21 August. The school readiness test is a practice for schools to assess their technology ahead of NAPLAN Online. The readiness test is not an assessment of student ability. This topic will be discussed in greater detail at the next meeting of the P&C. An information sheet will also be sent home in the near future.
MoreeIn late 2016 our school commenced a link with Moree Public School. As part of this a number of classes have been undertaking activities with students from Moree such as pen pal writing, studying of geography units that relate to the Moree area and question/answer sessions about our schools. Next week Miss Chapple, Miss Murray, Mrs Tarjan and Miss Graf will be travelling to Moree P.S. to teach for the week as part of our professional learning plan. Mr Brown and I will be visiting schools and significant sites in the Wee Waa, Narrabri and Moree area to gain a better understanding of the schools in this area and the development of intercultural understanding.
Athletics CarnivalWe look forward to our Years 3-6 Athletics Carnival to be held on Thursday (10 August) of this week at Homebush Athletics Centre Warm Up Track (located behind the Athletics Centre). Students attending the carnival are encouraged to wear their house colours. A program of the day’s events is available from the office, on the school website or on the school app.
Have a great weekDavid ShusterPrincipal
ICAS MathematicsStudents in Years 3-6 sitting for the ICAS Mathematics Competition will undertake this test on Tuesday (15 August) of next week.

A TeamOur shooting and spacing was incredible, but we could have worked on contact. The last minutes of the game were moments of great tension as Lane Cove West were fighting back to get the ball. We settled with a final score of 27-6 our way. The player of the match was Rosie Skinner (6K) for playing really well.
Written by Captain Zoe Clarke (6R).
C1 TeamToday we versed Neutral Bay C2 Team and we won 6-3. Our passes were good, but we need to focus on spreading out more and less obstruction. The player of the match was Lucy Rockliff (5B) for defending and her excellent skills when receiving the ball. I'd like to say to the C2 Team that you did really well and if I were giving out a sportsmanship award I would give it to the C2 Team.
Written by Captain Elika Kline (5M).
C2 TeamPlayers were quick to their feet. Passing was exceptionally better. We all gave it a go. It was a close game, but, unfortunately we lost 6-3 to Neutral Bay C1 Team. We improved our passing and stopped lobbing, but we need to work on spreading out. Player of the match was Sienna Williams Bush (6R) for her incredible catching and shooting. Overall, it was a great game and we all had fun.
Written by Captain Isabelle Stapf-Giannakis (6C).
D1 TeamToday the D1 Team played Greenwich. We had an excellent game with a score of 12-1 to us. We have improved a lot especially in defending and spreading out. I think we need to work on direct passes and chasing the ball. Overall, I think that we had an awesome game. The player of the match was Conor

Parkinson (5M). I chose Conor as she was always there to receive the ball and showed good sportsmanship. I think we made a good mark on Court 4.
Written by Captain Lucy Faugust (6S).
D2 TeamToday the D2 Team played Northbridge. It was 2-0 in the beginning of the 1st half, but if we'd defended our partners, the ball would have stayed up our end for longer. In the 2nd half, we spread out successfully and were always being there for each other. Our shooters did a great job competing against the wind and their partners. The final score was 4-3 their way. I think we still need to work on our defending and spreading ourselves out. Unfortunately, we lost our ball. The player of the match was Claire Weale (5T) because she always got out of the way of her defender and was ready to receive passes from our team.
Written by Captain Katya Tzannes (5M).
Boys TeamToday the Boys Netball Team played Mosman. We won 13-5. Our passing was on target and we have definitely improved in taking our time. The player of the match was Zetian Ren (6C) for always sticking to his player like superglue and intercepting the ball really well.
Written by Captain Jacob Skurnik (6C).
Kindergarten NewsThe Kindergarten children were so excited to welcome mums, dads, grandparents and special friends to Open Day last week! We proudly showed our visitors all our wonderful work and then we sang beautifully for them at the concert. Thank you for visiting us!

Miss L Josephson - 2L Class Teacher
Year 2 has been reading the narrative 'The Hidden Forest'. We have been looking at the structure of narratives and using a story graph to help analyse the different features authors may use to engage the audience. We have used The Hidden Forest as inspiration to then create our own narratives with the title ‘The Hidden Under Water World’. We even got crafty and created an underwater world of our very own in the classroom. We made origami fish seahorses, seaweed and scuba diver and a paper chain octopus.
Stage 2 News (Years 3 & 4)
Everywhere we look, there are angles. We have been exploring the different types of angles- right angles, obtuse angles and acute angles in maths. 3T took to the playground and found some angles on the play equiqment. They used the iPads to take photographs of the angles and identfy which angles they could find in the photograph .
In Reading Groups, 3T have been looking at information texts. We have been using the strategy of creating a web of understanding. Can you see the angles that we have created?
We have even done some artwork inspired by angles.

Do you love books? Fancy yourself a great reader? Try some questions from our Battle of the Books Competition. (Answers at the bottom.)
• In the book ‘Alone on a Wide, Wide Sea’ by Michael Morpurgo, what did the albatross represent for Allie?
• In ‘Maurice and his Educated Rodents’ by Terry Pratchett, what did the Ratking call himself in the minds of Maurice and the rats?
• In The Crossover’ by Kwame Alexander, what does Josh say that he won’t miss the big game for?
So what is Battle of the Books? 6C recently participated in a reading competition aiming to share the love of reading, encourage reading beyond individual preferences and rewarding the value of teamwork and cooperation.
So how did it work? Each student chose books to read from a list of 15 book titles, making sure that all books had been read by at least one student in their team over the competition period. Students were encouraged to read as many books as they could.
During the competition, randomly drawn questions were asked about each book and groups scored points for accurate and detailed answers. If two teams or players were of equal standing at the end of the competition, tie-breaker questions were used to determine the winner.
How do you win?To win, you needed to read lots of books. You also needed to be ready to work with your teammates to talk about the books you read and quiz each other with practice questions.
So who won? The winning team was Joel Gaynor, Jacob Skurnik, Oscar Luker, Anneke Corry and Kaiya Mussington who collectively read 45 books.
All together, 6C read 252 books over the competition period.
Congratulations go to our overall winner Jacob Skurknik and runner up Anneke Corry, who, in a tightly fought contest, went head to head to decide the final two places. Their prize? Books of course! Jacob and
Anneke each received a beautiful, hardcover edition of ‘The Hobbit, or There and Back Again’ by J.R.R. Tolkien.
