The Spanish Armada left Spain to attack England in May 1588. They were then met by a few fire ships at the south of England and they were then forced around the south-east of England. They were chased to the north of England by the English navy, led by Lord Thomas Howard. The Armada so became more damaged when it met the storms of the English Sea. The Armada then docked in Ireland. Only 67 out of 130 ships returned home. The reasons the Spanish were beat because the English had even better ships and the admiral died in the year the Armada was delayed.

The Spanish Armada was first sighted off The Lizard on July 19, 1588. Sporadic fighting occurred over the next two weeks with the largest English attack coming on August 8, off Gravelines, Flanders. After the battle, the English pursued the Armada until August 12, when both fleets were off the Firth of Forth.
