Contests

Every team will be offered a space every edition of the Newsletter to submit something funny... write about their game... whatever...and since we’re doing a newsletter every Tuesday of every week, you have plenty of time to come up with something! If your team doesn’t submit anything, and isn’t in the newsletter, talk to your captain!

Ideas for Team Submissions When I say, submit something for your team, here are some ideas: • Play by plays of the game • Document the debauchery at the bar - i.e. describing someone’s amazing acting skills hobbling across the bar with a “sprained ankle” just to Ice a teammate. ] • Draw pictures!!!!! • Favorite quotes, poems, song lyrics, movie scripts, YouTube video, or motivational speeches! • Email chains from the morning after . • Funny pictures of you, your team, or something random on the internet • Give your team member awards - drunkest, loudest, person with the least shame, best off the face catch, etc.! • Anything. Really. Someone on your team is creative.

Submissions are due EVERY Tuesday by 7 p.m.

Backyard Sports Club’s email is

[email protected]. I look forward to working with all of you!

** If you need extra time, email me and just let me know.

DISCLAIMER: if you have problems with keeping your language in check, not bashing refs, being overly nasty to other teams, and other no-no’s, the Editor does have the right to not include your write up in the newsletter if the content is deemed inappropriate or out of line. We will try to screen write ups as they are received, will try to let teams know so that they have time to resubmit, but there is no guarantee. The easiest thing to do is to keep it clean, be nice, and remember this is all in good fun.

Team write-ups UNBELIEVABLE!! We won our first game! Everything just seemed to click in game one of our first double-header. A few of us changed up our batting style and the bats really came alive! We found our new first baseman in Michelle, but unfortunately she will not be here the next few weeks. But she caught EVERYTHING that was thrown at her, very impressive. Aaron continues to be our defensive spark in left field, giving every play 100%. Behind the dish, everyone got on base. We played small ball, kept the ball out of the air and drove it hard. Heads up base running allowed us to take better advantage of the other teams errors. In the end, it was close. Bottom of the 6th, tied 7 to 7, no outs, bases loaded. I hit a deep fly ball to left center field. The outfielder mad a great catch, but it was enough for Kat to score the winning run! Great job all around!

Wow, bats on fire in the first inning. We went around the line-up twice and scored a monstrous inning. Wifflin Dixie fought hard and managed to put a couple runs on us, but our Defense stayed in tact and limited them to low scoring innings. After the first inning, they played great defense as well. But in the end we made it rain. Great game from both teams.

- Jon Reyes

We were pumped up for our second game. Maybe a bit too pumped as it seemed. We played a shorthanded opponent. They only had 7 total players and we thought it would have been an easy win. We were wrong. They came out and hit the ball extremely well, finding all the small holes on the field. Defensively they were amazing. The shortstop/third baseman caught EVERYTHING that was hit to him. What wasn’t hit to him in the air, he grabbed and made great plays at first. They played really well and we were defeated. But, as so often is the case, we made up for it at the bar. Instead of flip cup, we played chandeliers. Those not familiar with the game, come find me Thursday and we will “teach” you! -Glenn Krinsky

Promoting Ball Awareness...Since 2008

Wasn't a lot of offense to be had out there last night and the long ball certainly was negated from that stiff breeze in the face. But all in all, our defense was outstanding. Best game of defense I've seen us play in a long time. Also helped that they struck out their own teammates about five times. But play of the night definitely goes to Ryan Peshek for hitting that girl from the outfield who would've scored the tying run in the last inning. Next batter hit a pop up and the game was ours. We’ve played Da Bombers several times over the years and this was definitely out of the norm for their offense. They usually put up big numbers and we’ll expect that if we get them again in the tournament. Looking forward to next week.

- Will Buker

This was a well played tight game by both teams. Da Bombers got off to an early lead and Sons of Pitches came back to tie and eventually took the lead for good. Great defense by both teams. The game was close throughout and low scoring. It's always fun playing Will B and his team. I love the music too, especially the John Cena tune! Hats off to Da Bombers for playing a great game and also Sons of Pitches! I also need to shout out Ash Burress for hitting her first homer run 2 weeks ago. My bad for forgetting to mention it!

- Gordon Boothe

Team write-ups

With 3 of our team members off in "the cave" looking for a "little lion man" DWI showed up to get their wiffle on.We played some tough D with David and Mike gobbling up everything hit their way. We were hitting well, unfortunately most were caught by short and third. It was a really close game, tied going into the 6th. Make it rain was a great team, and I look forward to a rematch in the EOS tournament. Maybe next week we'll have to unleash Michael "the secret weapon" Esry in the outfield.

- Doug Werner

Well it looked like a week off made us a little rusty this go around, but we still managed to pull through. Marcus, Jess, and Brandy did great at bat, getting on base each time, counting 5 of the 7 total runs during the game. Jess also had an awesome triple and Brandy and I had killer line drives. Joe also had a great line drive but it was unfortunately caught by Pitches and Hoes left fielder…nice catch! Even though our bats may not have been that hot, we did an awesome job defensively, especially our catcher John. He did an awesome job, getting 4 outs that game! Trip did a great job taking over for Colin at first base and as always Ryan brings his defensive strategies to the field at third base helping with many of the outs. Great job Ryan! Also, Sarah and Julie did an awesome job defensively, helping keep the other team from scoring. Way to go team! We can mark this one down as the 15th straight win in a row from last season!!!

Team write-ups

We lost 18ish to 8ish to team Jon Reyes. Thats what happened when you allow 14 runs in the first. Their balls were finding all kinds of holes in that inning. And yes, I just used those combination of words. We actually were great the rest of the game with the exception of my Bill Buckner moment letting a ball go thru my legs. I was so embarassed after, I actually turned red which doesnt happen very often to brown people. Make it rain does have some great players tho. They hit like 5 hrs and theres no defending those. Shout out to my teammate Diamond for running all the way to 3rd base without actually touching 1st and 2nd. Best highlight was Kevin V hitting an inside the park hr, slipping after turning third base, and pirouetting while avoiding getting tagged. Sportscenter top 10 worthy.

- Joe Equitan

This game simply came down to base hits. Holey Balls had the same amount of innings played as the Ball Busters. Our first 8 batters couldn't produce the hits needed to score runs on the board for the first 2 innings. Ball Busters busted into the 1st inning with 4 runs and then we were playing catch up for the rest of the game. Luckily as the game went on, the rest of the line-up was able to lay ground hits and aggressively ran the bases. Thanks to Roman 'Chesafreak' Goldshteyn and Ken 'Photo Bomb' Rector, Holey Balls had a momentum. Stacie and Ashley stepped it up too. Holey Balls gave Ball Busters their first win of the season with a rally on the bottom of the sixth. Great game by all.

Team write-ups

I knew going into the next game would be a tough one. Down Wiff It has a lot of bat power. Mike Mars, Daniel Reyes, Doug Werner, and David Rauschberg can all go long on you and put up some big number. This game ended really quickly. Both teams played stellar Defense. Make it Rain couldn't find any rhythm of hitting the ball. We were down 3 to 1 going into the bottom of the fifth. Jon Reyes hit a solo HR to cut the score 3 to 2. Next batter Amy Dail was up and eradicated the ball for her first Home Run ever to tie the game up. The game was all tied up going into the bottom of the 6th inning. Luckily we found the ball with our bats and ended up scoring the winning run. Down Wiff It will be a tough team down the stretch once they get everyone back to the field and if they keep up their stellar Defense.

- Jon Reyes

With the ranks of the team ravaged by weddings, concerts and vacations...in the end there were only 6. Things looked grim for Rec'N Ballz against the orange clad shirts of the Ball Busters and the win streak looked in jeopardy. Through some stellar defense and hits when we needed them a win was found with the final score of 6-5. Salute to Ball Busters who made it interesting in the bottom of the sixth bringing the game to within 1 run, but the Rec'N Ballz defense held firm. Bring on next week and Rec'N Ballz back at full strength.

Wiffle Ball

Well, since no one wants to read the official Backyard Sports Club Wiffle Ball rules, here is a simple Wiffle Ball for Dummies to help you out as the season starts out!

When running to first base, remember to run across the outside base. The reason for this is so the first baseman doesn’t crush you trying to tag you out. However, if you’re running to 2nd, you can touch 1st base and book it to 2nd.

Wiffle Ball

Well, since no one wants to read the official Backyard Sports Club Wiffle Ball rules, here is a simple Wiffle Ball for Dummies to help you out as the season starts out!

NO SLIDING! NO CLEATS! Unless the ground is wet!

NO GLASS BOTTLES! NO SMOKING!

Wiffle Ball

MOST IMPORTANTLY….DO NOT, DO NOT THROW YOUR TRASH

BAGS WITH EMPTY CANS OR BOXES OF “ADULT BEVERAGES” INTO THE TRASH RECEPTICALS THEY HAVE AT THE FIELDS.

These DO NOT Go Into the Trash Cans at the Fields:

The Field Manager has already warned us about this, and if he has to tell us one more time, he

will take away our drinking privileges at the fields…or worse, he can end up kicking us off these fields all together! So PLEASE take your trash bag full of cans, cups,

and boxes with you!!!

Page 14: "The Batter's Box 4th Edition

The Dos and DONTs • DO NOT bring alcoholic beverages to the field….or at least be discreet about it! • DO clean up after yourselves! Unfortunately, maid service was cut out of Backyard

Sports Club’s budget due to the economy. • DO be friendly to the Refs: Please do not yell at them…just remember, you’re the one

that will look like a jerk if you yell at them. • DO NOT be “that guy.” We do not own Uno Chicago Grill or the premises around it; so

when you do something stupid, you’re not excluded from any laws just because you are wearing a Backyard Sports Club t-shirt.

• DO NOT leave a fellow wiffleballer behind; we take care of our own. Don’t let your

teammate drink like a champ and drive home. Find the closest decent looking guy/gal, introduce them, and have them go home together.

• DO NOT be bitter. It’s super important that if you end up having a “sleep over” with a

fellow wiffleballer, be cool with them for weeks to follow. We’re a small community, you’re gonna end up seeing them all season! When they drop you off at your car, hug it out, smile…and say “hi” the following week.

• DO NOT try to guess that persons name! • DO go to our sponsor Bar, Uno Chicago Grill. It’s what the cool kids are doing. • DO NOT fight! This is a fun league, HAVE FUN! If you fight, fun’s over for you, you’ll be

kicked out. • DO always wear your Backyard Sports Club shirt. I know laundry once a week may be

too much, so it’s cool if you go a couple weeks without washing….unless you’ve got bad B.O. like Robbie Wright!

• DO NOT smoke at the fields!

**DISCLAIMER** Nothing in the Backyard Sports Club Newsletter is to be taken seriously, except for the schedules and scores! Please send scores, recaps, pictures, questions, funny quotes, and/or any information that you would like to be added into the week’s newsletter to [email protected]

Oh yea Im back to pimp out another one of my teammates to one of you lady wiffleballers out there. His name is Kevin Vona. He just moved here from Boston, Massachusettes. Ladies do not be alarmed. He is no Masshole. Kevin is a sweet sensitive guy. His favorite movie is Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion. He attended Bentley University so my boy is wicked smaahht. How ya like them apples?! He also played baseball there. Kevin is looking for a girl (i think) who can pronounce Yastrzemski. Kevin loves movies, He actually had a scene in the movie The Departed as gangster #12. His top 5 favorite actors of all time are Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Mark Wahlberg, Donnie Wahlberg and Matt Damon. Yes he loves him some Matt Damon. Kevin is obviously a Red Sox fan so if you like the Yankees you better be a freakin TEN! Other than that, he's not very picky .
