OFFICIAL MONTHY NEWSLETTER OF ST. BASIL GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH Stockton, CA THE BASILIAN FEBRUARY 2016 Volume 30 Issue 2 Our Super Sunday On Sunday, Feb. 7th, one of the biggest events in the country takes place as millions watch the annual American event known as the Super Bowl, also known as Super Sunday. For Orthodox Christians, Pascha (Easter) is our Super Sunday, when millions all over the world gather in Churches to shout, “Christ is Risen!” Like the Super Bowl, Pascha always takes place on a Sunday because that is the day Christ rose from the dead. We know this because the myrrh-bearing women went to Christ’s tomb to anoint His body “after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn” only to discover that He had risen from the dead (Matthew 28:1, 6). For the Jews, the first day of the week was Sunday (remember, the first followers of Christ were Jewish, including these women). It’s important to note that while Pascha is the biggest Sunday of the year for us as Orthodox, every Sunday that we gather for the Divine Liturgy is a Super Sunday because every Sunday is a celebration of Christ’s Resurrection from the dead. In other words, we celebrate the Resurrection weekly as well as annually. Every Sunday, before and after the Small Entrance when the Priest comes out holding the Book of the Gospels with the acolytes, the choir will sing a Resurrectional hymn, reminding us of Christ’s victory over death, a victory that extends to us as well. All Sundays are Super Sundays for us because we receive the Lord’s very Body and Blood in Communion. What can be more worthy of celebration than the fact that our Creator, our God, the King of Glory, wishes to have an intimate relationship with us. Christ Himself desires this when He says: “Whoever eats my Body and drinks my Blood abides in Me and I in him.” (John 6:56). These words should kindle a fire within us to desire Communion on a regular basis, for by doing so, we are united with our beloved and precious Lord, who loves us more than anyone and who bestows upon those close to Him countless blessings. All Sundays are Super Sundays because we receive the Holy Spirit. At every Divine Liturgy, the Priest says, “Once again we offer to You this spiritual worship without the shedding of blood, and we ask, pray, and entreat You: send down Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts here presented.” Receiving the Holy Spirit is a major cause for celebration because the gifts of the Holy Spirit are “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22, 23), blessings that all people long for. Also, through the Holy Spirit, we are given the power to live the Christian way of life that we would be unable to do on our own. All Sundays are Super Sundays because we gather together with other members of our spiritual family, those who are living and with those who are departed and even the angels. The icons of the saints in our Church remind us that they celebrate with us too, for they are alive spiritually, assuring us that not even death itself can separate them from the love of God (Romans 8:38, 39). We have their support and their encouragement to keep fighting the good fight, to keep forging ahead and living for Christ, to keep loving Him and others. As countless gather for Super Bowl Sunday, let us gather every Sunday for our Super Sunday, so that we can celebrate all the things that God has done for us and continues to do for us on a daily basis. Let us not deprive ourselves of all the blessings that come from attending the Divine Liturgy, receiving Communion and thus having the Father, Son and Holy Spirit intimately in our lives. In Christ, Fr. Panagiotis

PRESIDENT’S CORNERI hope everyone is enjoying God’s many blessings in the new year. We have had a wonderful start to 2016, with the celebration of our parish feast day and a visit from our spiritual leader, Metropolitan Gerasimos, for liturgy followed by a luncheon and cutting of the Vasilopita. This year’s Vasilopita coin was in the portion received by Mary Carroll Bandy, representing the Bookstore. Mary, along with Patty Manuse, have worked hard to restock the bookstore with icons, cards, and books for adults and children, and they invite parishioners to visit the displays during office hours and on Sunday after liturgy.

In this new year, our weekly parish meetings and ministries have resumed including Sunday School and Greek School; Bible study on Thursday mornings; and the Wednesday evening Family Night with vespers, dinner, and faith sessions for children and adults. New members are welcome to join at any time!

The coming months will also bring many volunteer opportunities around the parish, from the annual Philoptochos fundraising dinner in early March, to our May1st Pascha Picnic for parish families, friends, and the community to our annual Greek Food Festival and to so many more events throughout the year that need and welcome volunteers. Call or email the office, or talk to me after liturgy about your volunteer interests -- chances are we have a project to match your talents and enthusiasm.

Veronica Gatrousis President

Again, many thanks to all the wonderful sponsors and guests that supported and attended the October 11, 2015, International Orthodox Christian Charities Event held at St. Basil.

The amazing funds raised due to this event are $40,566.00. Remember, due to matching grants, these funds will be multiplied seven times!!

Thank you all, and may the year 2016 bring peace, joy, and good health to you and your families.

IOCC UPDATE

As Great Lent approaches, the Bookstore committee is in the process of changing its theme from the Nativity to Great Lent. Fr Pete has recommended two books to read during Lent. The first is "Great Lent" by Fr. Alexander Schmemann who was a writer, lecturer, and pastor, as well as Dean and professor of liturgical theology at St. Vladimir Seminary. Fr. Pete's second pick is "The Lenten Spring" by Fr.Thomas Hopko. Fr. Hopko was also Dean of St. Vladimir Seminary for 10 years and taught dogmatic theology there for over 20 years. His blog posts are still available on Ancient Faith radio. "The Lenten Spring" is meant to be read a few pages at a time as a meditation. Both books are contemporary classics and provide insight into Great Lent, fasting, and spiritual growth. They are available from the bookstore after Liturgy on Sundays, before and after both Family Night and Bible study. For information or to order books contact me or Patty Manuse through the Church office.

ST. BASIL PRESCHOOLHappy New Year!

We have had a VERY busy month in December. Not only were we preparing our classrooms for “Jesus’ Birthday party,” we were also practicing our Christmas program every day! As I type, our program is just a day away and the excitement is mounting! This has always been one of my favorite times as a teacher. I am able to witness their little lights shining so brightly as they sing about the birth of baby Jesus. It truly does not matter if they forget the words to the song, decide they would rather “observe” from the comfort of Mama’s lap, or stand up there and wave! They all know there is a different reason for the season, JESUS!

I recently spent some time in our Pre-Kindergarten room and asked them if they had a special wish for this New Year. Here are some responses:Isabella: Lots of ButterfliesElias: A GirlfriendTei- No trash: a clean earthJacqueline: A New Year’s shirtThomas: “I can’t think of anything right now, but when I do, I will tell you.”Ellie: I want a babyElla: For everyone to be nice!Evan: A Ferris WheelKyle: I want to sing with my Dad and play guitarAbby: I want to go to my sister’s big schoolLily: My wish is that flowers growRemember to mark your Calendars! Preschool Registration Begins Feb. 29th for 2016-2017 school year! (church members only)

Happy New Year and mqy God richly bless you in 2016!Tammy Hamilton-Williams

The flyer for this event is on the next page with all the information you may need. We are asking those that are able, to help us with a monetary donation to help with some of the expenses. We also ask those who can to donate an item or a basket worth at least $100.00 or more for the raffle. We will also have a bake sale and music, as well. The meal will include Greek Salad, Pasta, and Dessert.

We are looking forward to your attendance and supporting the Philoptochos. All proceeds, after expenses, will go to the many charities we help, both local and national.

Thank you in advance for your help.

PHILOPTOCHOS ANGEL BABIES

The Ladies of Philoptochos of St. Basil are excited to start their new ministry -- Angel Babies. Our first Work Day (sewing party) is scheduled for Wednesday, January 27, 2016 from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm. We will meet in the church fellowship hall. We have set aside the third Wednesday of every month for sewing days. We are grateful for the donations made to Angel Babies.

To date we have received three wedding dresses and one partial bridesmaid dress which enables us to get started on the Angel Gowns, along with 2 sewing machines, 2 irons, 1 ironing board, 2 rolling carts, and miscellaneous sewing notions. Some ladies are already crocheting hats and blankets at home.

The positive response from so many parishioners and friends of the parish has been overwhelming. Please continue to donate wedding dresses to keep this ministry going.

PREPARATION FOR THE FEAST DAY VASILOPITA

PHILOPTOCHOSOur Philoptochos Chapter’s aims are PHILANTHROPY – FELLOWSHIP – FAITH IN ACTION and it has certainly met it’s goals in the last few months. PHILANTHROPY: The monetary donations are many, i.e. IOCC, Kids ‘n’ Cancer, St. Nicholas Shrine (DOVE), St. Nicholas Ranch, Emergency Food Bank, Stockton Shelter for the Homeless, St. Mary’s Dining Room, Child Abuse Prevention, Women’s Center, PAOI, and more to follow. FELLOWSHIP encompasses many avenues in addition to monthly meetings such as coffee hour, Festival work parties, International Bazaar, helping with IOCC dinner, turkey luncheon, Diocesan Holiday Brunch, hosting reception for Vespers of St. Basil and more. Without FAITH IN ACTION the above accomplishments would not be possible. It takes action of many members at Festival time, bake sales, coordinating collections for Haven of Peace, making Prosforo, organizing Macarias, Altar preparations and the newest undertaking “Angel Babies” (making burial garments for deceased babies). The list goes on! It takes many hands and hearts to accomplish all of the above. We welcome all ladies of St. Basil to join us. If you are not already a member, especially young ladies, age 18 yrs and older, won’t you be our guest at the next luncheon meeting, March 22 at U.J.’s Restaurant? Men of our Parish may become supporting members of Philoptochos by making a financial donation of $35. That’s a reminder---It’s time for 2016 membership dues $35. National and Metropolis obligations are $30 per person total and any amount over $30 remains in our chapter’s budget. Make checks payable to PHILOPTOCHOS and mark for “Dues”.

Please make note of three upcoming sponsored events (Detailed elsewhere in BASILIAN) February 14 Red Dress Sunday March 5 Shrimp Chicken Tri-Tip DinnerMarch 15 Mochas for Missions

Let us not forget our monthly donations for HAVEN of PEACE. February Needs: Toilet Tissue, Paper Towels, Napkins and Sanitary Napkins. We will soon be concentrating on establishment of a library at the HAVEN. Keep this in mind as we will need NEW and GENTLY USED books both appropriate for children and adults. Won’t you stay connected and be a part of Philoptochos Ministry!

PROFIT & LOSSFDF GLENDI

The FDF Glendi on Saturday, January 23rd, was a real treat for those who attended in support of these fine young dancers and singers. The Elk Grove community came, too. Thanks to Maria and Dimitri Karapanos and Presvetera Angie Sotiras for their excellent instruction in dance and music.

Along with the superb entertainment, the pastitsio, spanakopita, and salad were scrumptious. Thanks to Gia and Michael Duffy for underwriting the event. Thanks, too, to the Pappas family for providing the delicious desserts from Papapavlos’ Bistro. We cannot forget the family members of the dancers, who served the food and bussed the tables.

If you were unable to attend this year, please plan to join our young people next year. As usual, Chris Perris (talented DJ), provided great dance music and amusing commentary..

Bravo!
