Transcript of The basics of off road driving
Off-road driving can be challenging
even to the most experienced riders.
This is why it is important to prepare
and practice the skills necessary to take
on the rough roads. Being behind the
wheel of an off-road vehicle can be
much more
enjoyable if a
person has the
skills necessary
for it.
Off-Road
Vehicles
Off-road vehicles
come in many different forms—sand
rails, ATVs, dune buggies, airboats, or
even the common truck with certain
modifications. These vehicles are
designed for or capable of cross-
country travel or for driving
immediately over swampland or
naturally rough terrains. Riders need to
know about the type of vehicle they are
on to evaluate and be certain of its
limitations. It is also necessary to have a
properly
maintained vehicle
and to know the
minimum ground
clearance.
Riding the
Vehicle
Off-road driving is
banned in most parks. Some national
forests, however, allow it and have legal
off-road trails throughout the area. A
few recreational parks also offer off-
road courses. Every location has its own
rules, so it is important to check them
before going.
Riders can go to
the park visitor
center for more
information about
routes, equipment,
permits, and other
essentials.
The First-
Time Riders
Riders need to
find a safe location to practice before
going on any serious off-road
excursions. The practice area should be
open, large, and free of hazards. It is
not advisable to take on challenging
routes, as it can damage the vehicle and
lead to harm. Riders need to consult
the vehicle’s manual for the proper
starting procedure. The correct riding
posture is also important for easier
operation of
vehicle controls.
Sharing the
Experience
Off-road driving is
best enjoyed when the experience is
shared. It is better to go expedition style
with one or two drivers and their vehicles.
It is best to maintain visual contact without
bumping into each other. Keeping a two-
way radio active is also wise in case riders
get separated.
The most important element of a
successful off-road driving trip is
preparation. Riders need to prepare for all
circumstances and know what they are
getting themselves into. It is also important
to get familiarized with the vehicle itself,
especially when taking on challenging
roads or in case of extreme weather.
