Spring Recess Begins

Monday 13 School Resumes

RECESS:

INSIDE OR

OUTSIDE?

ABOVE 20ºF Recess is held outside

FROM 15-20ºF Wind conditions

will determine.

BELOW 15ºF Inside recess

Troy School District policy states that

there will be no outdoor recess when

temperatures are below 15ºF. If tem-

peratures are between 15º and 20ºF,

the wind chill factor will be consid-

ered. It is important that children

dress appropriately: Boots, hats,

gloves and/or mittens and a warm

coat.

All students are expected to partic-

ipate in recess. Fresh air, physical

play and exercise helps develop fitness

and is important to children’s ability

to focus during learning times. Gen-

erally, if a child is well enough to at-

tend school, he/she is well enough to

go outside for a short period to take a

break and get some fresh air.

WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME:

Schools bring children into close physical contact,

thus giving communicable diseases an opportunity to

spread quickly. Keep your child home if he or she

has any of the following symptoms.

Fever

Pain and stiffness of neck and headache

Sort throat

Swelling/tenderness of neck glands

Cough, if persisten and productive

Nausea and vomiting

Diarrhea and persistent abdominal pain

Jaundice (yellowing of eyes or skin)

Rash. Any skin

eruptions, if red,

swollen and drain-

ing.

Red or runny eyes.

Sneezing or dis-

charge from nose.

Following the above

guidelines will help prevent a child from developing

possible complications and will keep the school envi-

ronment a healthy one.

More information about communicable diseases can

be found at www.oakgov.com/health or by contacting

the nurses at (248) 848-5533.

Before and After School Student Safety

In order to provide a safe environment for

children who, for whatever reason, are not

picked up on time or for those students

who are returned to school by bus drivers,

the following procedures will be in place

for ALL Troy Elementary Schools. Our

intent is to guarantee the safety of your

child.

School Personnel will make every effort to

contact parents or persons designated on

the emergency card and inform them of

the fact that the child is still at school.

At 4:10 p.m. children whose parents have

NOT arrived to pick them up shall be tak-

en to the after school CARE Program. A

copy of the child’s emergency card will ac-

company the child. CARE personnel will

be informed of the situation and the child

will stay at CARE until he or she can be

released to a parent, guardian, or person

listed on the emergency card. In order to

insure the safety of the students, the same

procedure will be followed when a student

is dropped off before 9:00 a.m.

CARE Company will charge the following

and the fee will be collected when you pick

your child up.

First Occasion: $10.00 per hour per

child

Daylight Savings

Daylight Savings comes early this year!

We all need to “spring ahead” one hour on

Sunday, March 8, 2015.

Also, the National Fire Protection Associa-

tion and the US Consumer Product Safety

Commission recommend that we change

the batteries in smoke and carbon monox-

ide detectors when we change our clocks

for Daylight Savings Time.

From the School Office…From the School Office… Just a few reminders to help the remainder of the school year go

smoothly for all of us!

Please make arriving to school on time a priority. Students

are admitted to the building at 9:05 a.m. and are considered

tardy if not in their classroom by 9:10 a.m.

If your child will be late or absent from school, please remember to call the school absence

reporting line at 248-823-4301 by 9:30 a.m. *PARENTS PLEASE NOTE: Please call

the absence line even if you inform your child’s teacher of an absence. The office must

know if your child is in attendance or not. Telling your child’s teacher is not enough.

Thank you.

* Remember to send a note to your child’s classroom teacher of any changes in your

child’s after school arrangement...i.e. CARE attendance, being picked up instead of

riding the bus, etc.

In response to current influenza concerns I have asked Enviro-Clean to put extra emphasis disinfecting all major “touch points” i.e.; door handles, faucets, dispensers, desktops, etc… In order for Enviro-Clean to accomplish this extra detail work with-in their regular shift times they have been asked to use best judg-ment regarding performing expedited/quick cleaning. We will continue this practice for tonight and tomorrow and then evaluate as a district if further action is needed. Thank you all for your cooperation and patience while our Enviro-Clean Partner performs the necessary disinfecting.

Parent Teacher Conferences

On Thursday, March 12 Spring Parent-

Teacher Conferences will take place in the

evening from 6:00-9:00 p.m. We ask that

parents attend conferences without their

children.

Due to the fact half the number of confer-

ence slots are available as in the fall, not all

1st-5th grade parents will be scheduled for a

conference. Your child will bring home a let-

ter stating whether or not your child’s teach-

er would like to meet with you.

The kindergarten teachers will be meeting

with all their students’ parents. We have ar-

ranged for additional conference times avail-

able for kindergarten parents.

All students will bring home a letter stating if

their teacher would like to conference with

you. We will be using PTC.fast, the web

based tool that we used in the fall for con-

ference scheduling. Instructions will be com-

ing home with each student.

Valentine’s Day Parties Barnard Classroom Valentine parties will be held on Friday, February 13. The parties will begin at 1:45 p.m. and end at 2:30 p.m. We will be asking all visitors to leave promptly at 2:30 p.m. to allow our buses en-trance to our school. Teachers will work with room parents to decide the number of parents needed to help with the party.

BUILDING CLOSED

Please keep in mind that our building is closed and

locked when there are no after school activities.

Classrooms are also locked when teachers leave for

the day.

Returning to Barnard after school hours and going

into classrooms is not permitted. Our custodial staff

may not open doors when students forget clothing,

homework or other items.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Attention parents of First Graders -- We are beginning

to prepare for our FIRST GRADE VOCAL MUSIC INFORMANCE. The date is May 5th at 7 PM. Please mark your calendars. An “informance” is a sniglet combining the words“inform” and “performance”. Attention parents of 3rd Graders – Our Vocal music informance will come soon – Tues-

Congratulations Jammin’ Jays -- Your performance at the district Festival of Song was

outstanding! You really touched the hearts of our audience. Our next big performance is on Wednesday, May 13th at 7 PM at Athens High. We will perform in conjunction with the Baker Mid-dle School Choirs.

Page 15 Barnard Broadcaster

Dear Barnard family, This year our students at Barnard will be given a circuit of fitness tests in P.E. class. Below are the five events that students will be tested on and the fitness component associated with it. I also included some fun ways to help improve fitness levels for each category

Items Fitness Component

1. FLEXED ARM HANG Arm and shoulder strength and endurance

(Monkey bars, push-ups, climbing, bear walks, crab walks, planks )

2. PLANK Abdominal strength and endurance

(sit-ups, leg lifts, side plank, tightening core during other activities)

3. CONTINUOUS JOG Cardio respiratory endurance

(Rollerblading, bike riding, jogging, ice skating)

4. SIT AND REACH Flexibility of lower back and posterior thighs

(Toe touches, standing stretches, sitting stretches)

5. JUMP ROPE Leg strength, power and agility, endurance

(Jogging, line jumps, hop-scotch, swings, practice, practice, practice!)

These 5 tests will be given once in the first semester, and once in the second semester. Students will be tested with their classmates, but will not be competing against them. They should try to do their best on all of the test items. The goal is to improve personal scores from the first semester to the second semester. On the back of the sheet are the levels for each fitness category. These will also be on the report card. If you have any questions, please see me and I will be happy to answer them for you. Students should be working hard not only in P.E. class, but at home too. Living an active lifestyle is crucial. It will not only increase fitness, but will also help you feel healthy and strong. So take any opportunity to be active! Start now to improve your own physical fitness! Good Luck, Mr. J. Myrick
