To the People of Three Rivers, from Josef and Slaine, Baron and Baroness, Greetings!

We want to express our gratitude for the warm wishes and the wonderful Chieftains event as we stepped up to the Baronage We would also like to acknowledge the hard work of our predecessors, Their Excellencies Ravasz and Kajsa, who are now enjoying their well-earned retirement

We look forward to leading the Barony and wish to have a chance to talk with the populace about your hopes and expectations To that end, we will be holding an Althing on Thursday, March 29, at 7 PM This is an open meeting to discuss the group’s future and is less formal than a meeting or Court Please come and let your voice be heard

The month of March is here, which brings with it both Spring and Gulf Wars We know that many of our folk will be joining the Falcon Host as fighters, archers, Fourth Company, power shoppers, and in other fun pursuits While we are not able to go this year, we are eagerly awaiting the tales of those who do

Also in March this year is a change to the normal cycle of coronations in Calontir Their Royal Highnesses Lucian and Conna will be ascending the Falcon Thrones on March 24 in the Shire of Spinning Winds Although it is far, we hope to see many from Three Rivers there to celebrate the day

In service,

Josef and Slaine

Baron and Baroness Three Rivers

A Letter from their Excellencies Three Rivers

A Letter from the Chronicler of Three RiversGreetings unto the populace of Three Rivers,

Spring has arrived and there are many changes in store for the barony this month

February brought Chieftains and a changing of the guard Ravasz and Kajsa have turned over the coronets to Slaine and Josef I wish the new Baron and Baroness the best in their upcoming reign

March contains many changes as well This is the month marks the launch of the new SCA electronic publications site This site allows members to access any newsletter from any kingdom in the known world To ease your transition into this brave new world of electronic publications, I have included a guide book to the new electronic publication formats The guide book can be found on pages 6 and 7

The Barge is also undergoing some changes The Barge’s electronic counterpart on threeriver.org is launching this month The electronic edition of The Barge will feature the same great content as the print edition plus certain extras like story hyperlinks and color content that do not translate well to the print world

Once again, if you have any questions, concerns, or articles for The Barge, please contact me at [email protected] I will follow up as soon as possible Thank you for supporting The Barge

In service,

Julian Ó Néill

Electronic Newsletters: An OverviewJulian Ó Néill

This month marks the inaugural launch of the SCA’s kingdom level publications site This launch also marks the end of no-cost print newsletters for SCA members All memberships created or renewed on or after March 2012 will not receive a paper copy of the kingdom newsletter in the mail unless they subscribe to the optional $30/year (third class) or $35/year (first class) service SCA memberships that were active before this date will continue to receive paper publications until they opt out or their current membership term expires

If this is your first time using electronic publications, you will need to install Adobe Acrobat Reader or an equivalent PDF file reader PDF files originated from the publication industry as a way to easily distribute electronic documents This file format is now being used by both the SCA and the Barony of Three Rivers in their electronic publications systems Adobe Acrobat Reader is available free from: http://get.adobe.com/reader

To access the the kingdom level newsletters:• Go to http://enewsletter.sca.org (feel free to bookmark this page for future usage)• Type in your SCA membership number (user name) and password Your initial password to this site is: start• Select the Kingdom of Calontir from the list of available kingdoms If you want to view other kingdom newsletters, you can select that kingdom’s area All kingdoms are available to all members through the electronic newsletters site at this time• Select the issue that you want to view The newsletter will display in your browser If your browser prompts you to save the file, save the newsletter file to an easy to remember location (ie Desktop) and open it manually with your preferred PDF reader

To access The Barge:• Go to http://threeriver.org/barges (feel free to bookmark this page for future usage)• Select the issue that you want to view The newsletter will display in your browser If your browser prompts you to save the file, save the newsletter file to an easy to remember location (ie Desktop) and open it

manually with your preferred PDF reader

What to Expect – The MewsThe Mews and other publications will be going to a fixed layout starting with the March 2012 printing All kingdom newsletters are now limited to 16 full size letter (85”x11”) pages in black and white (SCA Chronicler Policy 3A) The pre-transition The Mews was a variable length half letter (85”x55”) black and white booklet

The content of the newsletter is also changing in March The Mews is now reserved for “official real world business only” and may not contain “extra” features such as arts and sciences articles, court reports, or photography The additional features are currently being transferred to a quarterly online only full color publication called The Calon Scrolls (The Mews, February 2012, Kingdom Chronicler Letter)

For those renewing their SCA membership: The printed version of the kingdom is now optional The current cost is $30 for third class postage and $35 for first class postage That works out to $250 an issue at the third class rate

For more information, visit the SCA Chronicler page at: http://www.sca.org/officers/chronicler

What to Expect – The BargeThe content of The Barge is unaffected by the change However, the distribution model of The Barge will be changing to take advantage of the electronic format

The Barge will be distributed in a dual format starting in March The printed version of The Barge will remain available at weekly meetings The $050 mandatory charge has been removed in favor of a donation system The suggested donation for The Barge is now $100

The Barge will now be available on the Three Rivers web site (threeriver.org) starting in March The PDF edition will feature full color and certain “interactive extras” that are not easily translated to the print format

E-Newsletter Website Ready! If you are a Sustaining or International member, you can now access the e-newsletter website at http://enewsletter.sca.org/

Your user name is your membership number and the temporary password is “start” (without the quotes) Once into the site, we ask that you immediately reset the temporary password, replacing it with one of your own choosing

The FAQs at http://sca.org/BOD/announcements/E-NewsFAQs.pdf have been updated If you

have additional questions, please contact the Publications Manager at [email protected]

Lawsuit DonationsThe Board of Directors would like to express its gratitude for the generosity of the good people of the SCA We know many of you are holding fund-raisers and seeking ways to donate to the Society, thank you We deeply appreciate all your efforts We have had many e-mails, telephone calls and messages asking about donations Here are some guidelines for donating or sending money to SCA Inc

You are free to hold fundraisers or make personal donations, and the SCA deeply appreciates your efforts and your support of our shared organization We would suggest that you make any such donations directly to your Kingdom to help it pay the amount it will be required to contribute as its part of the SCA’s obligations in the settlement Some Kingdoms have organized ACCEPS “event” to accept donations, so if it is more convenient for you to donate online, check the ACCEPS site to see if your Kingdom has created a donation “event” Any donations made through ACCEPS will go to the Kingdom

If you choose, you may also send a donation directly to the corporation, and it will be gratefully accepted as a general donation toward the SCA’s operating expenses The corporate office is working on a Paypal account and will add a button to the SCA’s website once the account is established Any donations sent directly to the corporate office or through the corporate Paypal account will not be counted toward your Kingdom’s obligation

We also encourage the membership to opt out of paper newsletters as soon as possible because it reduces the amount of operating expenses the SCA must pay See your Kingdom newsletter or www.sca.org for more information on how to opt out of paper newsletters You will soon have access to the electronic version of all the Kingdom’s newsletters!

We encourage our members to use one of these methods or to send a check directly to your Kingdom Exchequer or the SCA’s corporate office in Milpitas to ensure your donation is received and put to its intended use Thank you all again for your support of our wonderful Society!
