Committee Help Needed

For many months the agenda item “Expectations for jobs with reimbursed/free entries – Chair, Secretary, Volunteer Coordinator, and Chief Course Builder” has remained as pending. After some discussion at the March meeting; it was agreed that having a committee take a look at

the job descriptions for these jobs and the appropriate reimbursement would be beneficial. A policy already exists, this committee will review these expectations and reimbursement and see if they are still appropriate. The committee will then report back to the board their rec-ommendation. Are you interested in being on this committee? If you feel like this is some-

thing you’d like to be a part of, please email Dana at [email protected]. Please include which venue you participate in (obedience, agility, etc.) and why you’d like to be on this committee.

Keep in mind this committee will only be reviewing our current policy and making recommendations.

I tried to find some inspiring or motivating or even fun quote about being on a com-mittee….but I could not – don’t let that stop you from

thinking about serving our club! (I did find many FUNNY ones however!) I don’t anticipate that this will take a huge

amount of your time. After all we all have dogs to train, and life

Thanks for your consideration.

What IS Flyball anyway!??

Flyball is different from any other dog sport. Not only are you out there working with your dog as a somewhat in-dividual team, but you are also working as part of a functioning bigger team of 3 other handlers & their dogs, along with a box loader (& ideally a couple other people to help with ball shagging and calling passes). You have to consider the whole group, not just yourself and your dog.

It also asks your dog to do things no other dog sport does. It requires great self control on the part of your dog, as well as good focus and attention skills, and most importantly, a reliable recall. Where in other sports, your dog works fairly close to you, you are asking your dog to completely run away from you, amidst a room full of moving and often barking dogs and people, to focus completely on retrieving the ball (which is about the only thing in the room not moving). They are asked to run directly past another dog as they run towards the other dog and that dog runs head-on towards them, making a nose-to-nose, side-by-side pass, and they must completely ignore that other dog as well as the other 7 dogs out there (3 others on your own team, plus 4 on the opposing team), while retrieving that ball and coming back directly to you.

A flyball racing arena consists of 2 racing lanes set up. The lane is 51 feet long from the start line to the box, and there is usually 50-80 feet of runback room past the line in the back. There are 4 hurdles set up in the lane. The dog must run down that lane, jumping the hurdles, they must engage the box (which shoots out a tennis ball), they catch the ball (ideally), and then must carry the ball back down the lane over the 4 jumps and across the start line. Four dogs run on a team at a time, and it is a relay race, so as one dog crosses the line the next dog runs down the line, crossing as close to a nose-to-nose pass at the start line as possibly. Once all 4 dogs have run, you have com-pleted the heat. If the first dog starts too early, or if any of the other 3 dogs cross the line early before the dog in front of it comes back across it, if a dog drops the ball early or misses any jump, or if they don’t engage the box (so, if they “cheat” to get the ball out), that dog must rerun after the other 4 run, in order to complete the race. As your team is running, there is another team in the other lane running as well. As you wait your turn to run, you line up on the right side of the lane, and then as you and/or your dog returns, they must stay to the left side of the lane, leaving room on the right for the dog heading down the lane. There is a lighting system (like drag racing in cars) that starts you out and records each dog’s time as well as your total team time. Your team will race other teams that are seeded to run about the same time as your team, so it makes for fun, competitive racing. There is usually between 3 and 5 heats in each race, and you have somewhere between 4 and 6 races each day. Our team typically lists 6 dogs on a team each day, even though only 4 race at a time. That way the dogs get breaks during the day and don’t have to run every race. There are usually many teams spread over 4 or 5 divisions (based on your team seed times) racing each day, and often 200+ dogs at a give tournament.

In addition to the 4 dogs and handlers on your team, you must have a box loader to load the balls into the box for each dog as they come down the lane. It works better if you also have someone to shag the balls in the back as the dogs drop them, and ideally, it’s nice to have a person from your team sitting at the start line letting you know how far apart your passes are. Each team also wants one smaller dog, called a “height dog,” as your smallest dog determines what your jump heights will be. The smaller the dog, the lower the jump heights, and often the larger dogs are basically just running over the jumps, so the smaller dogs really do work the hardest, as they must jump higher to get over the jump. Many different types of balls can be used, from regular tennis balls to softer “squishy” balls, and different sized balls are used depending on what size dog it is (or what the dog prefers). There are rules about how far the ball must go when it pops out of the box, so as long as your ball meets those guidelines, you can use any ball your dog prefers.

Your total team time determines how many points those 4 dogs earn as they run each heat. As they accumulate those points, they then earn titles based on that accumulation of points. So it isn’t just about you and your dog, as how the entire team runs affects how many points each of those 4 dogs earns each time they race. And, let’s face it, the dogs don’t know or care how many points they have, they’re just having fun!

Flyball does tend to be a loud sport, as dogs are very excited and happy to run. They are allowed to bark in fly-ball, and most of them do! There is a lot of energy and excitement in the room, and that can be stressful (good or bad, stress is still stress), which is why a reliable recall and good focus and attention is so important! Not every dog can handle that super charged environment.

There are two different parent clubs for flyball, NAFA and UFLI. The rules and layout of both are very similar, the points system and titles are a little different. Mixed breeds are very welcome in flyball, and you definitely see a lot of them!

Flyball is a ton of fun! Even though we have our own individual teams, most all the teams are willing to jump in and help another team all the time, and it really is a big “family” feel with a lot of good camaraderie among the different teams. It is a GREAT sport to be a part of!! ~~Amy Sjomeling

Out and About with Rob!

Thanks to Rob Duberstein for

sharing these photos! He had a very busy weekend

in Manitouwac

capturing our dogs in action.

We ran in a Ufli flyball tournament in New Berlin in early March. It was

Yahtzee's flyball debut in singles. He ran great, and made mama happy. At our next tourney we'll try him on the

team. Ruger ran flawless as usual, and earned his TFP-I (Top Flight Premier Level One) title.

MacKay Entlebucher Trio Brags We made a mini vacation family trip to Louisville, KY to attend the Kentuckiana Cluster of Dog Sport activities for the first time. WOW what a fun and huge slice of dog show heaven. So many vendors and different sports! We entered agility for 3 out of 4 days and 1 day of obedience with the baby with much success! Superstar Kai earned got QQ #54 with 3/6 Q’s in agility! Data also went 3/6 Q’s and earned QQ #60 for his MACH3 Saturday, March 17th on St. Patrick’s Day (a little luck and a little skill maybe ). He earned MACH3 under judges: Christie Bowers & Mark Upshaw. Data’s registered name is now: BISS GCH CH MACH3 Imzadi Data v. Eagleheart VCD1 BN GN RE MXB2 MJC MXF T2B TKA CGC Here are Data’s MACH3 runs as You Tube links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KJOHpg8eUM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsY5Ko1kerg

Then the baby… Jaylah at 17-1/2 months old handled herself with such maturity & skill for the most part in that large chaotic environment! I was blown away as this was only her 4th agility trial. Jaylah earned her Agility Novice FAST title with a first place Thursday. She also earned her Beginner Novice Obedience title with a 3rd place in a field of 18 other competitors on Friday. And she Qualified for her first Agility Open Standard and Open Jumpers With Weaves legs taking 1st place in both. Jaylah & I even beat out Jennifer Crank & her young sheltie Rio in Open JWW. Now I realize Rio is Jenn’s young dog… not her experienced dog P!nk that won Westminster & recently the AKC Na-tionals in 16” but I have to say it was still a thrill! Here’s Jaylah’s ribbon haul and her registered name is now: CH Antea z. Rodevachu CGC BN NA NAJ NF TKI
