A Message From Your Administrative Team
Dear Parents/Guardians, The staff and students of Discovery Public School would like to thank the volunteers for the tremendous support we received again this year. From the parents who accompany classes on field trips, read with our children, assist in the classrooms daily, assist in the library, to those on the School Advisory Council. Our volunteers have continued the strong tradition of contribut-ing to the overall success of our school. The staff would also like to pay a special tribute to our student volunteers who assist us in various capacities throughout the school year. Please accept our sincere thanks. It has been another successful year here at Discovery thanks to all your support and involvement. To express our appreciation of your ongoing support of Discovery Public School, we will be holding a volunteer breakfast on Tuesday, June 10th at 8:00 a.m. in the library. Invitations will be sent out shortly. We have received the staffing that directs us in our class organization for the 2014/2015 school year. We have met with staff and with our School Council to share the tentative school organization. As we organize for next year, our staff will make every effort to place students in the best learning environment for each child to be successful. We take into account individual needs, academic achievement, emotional and social development, number of boys and girls, and work habits. If parents have input into this process, please submit in writing to the principal by May 12. We do not accept requests for specific teachers or specific friendship groupings. While your input is carefully considered, the final decision about your child’s placement rests with the school. You may notice that there are some combined classes. Due to the primary cap on class size and other factors, combined classes are necessary given our allotment of staff. Teachers will continue to provide grade specific programming to suit the needs of all students in their classrooms. The tentative organization for September 2014 will be: ASD-JK/SK ASD-SK/1 JK/SK JK/SK JK/SK JK/SK GR. 1 GR. 1 GR. 1 GR.1/2 GR. 2 GR. 2/3 GR. 2/3 GR. 3 GR. 3 GR. 3/4 GR. 4 GR. 4 GR. 4/5 GR. 5 GR. 5/6 GR. 6 GR. 6 GR. 7 GR. 7 GR. 7/8 GR. 8 GR. 8

The Provincial testing will take place for Grade 3 and 6 students between May 26 and June 6,
2014. The EQAO dates for our Primary and Junior division have been set:

difficulties.

2013-2014 GRADUATION
On Tuesday, June 24th a graduation ceremony recognizing the achieve-
ments of our departing Grade 8 students will be held at the Borgata Ban-
quet Hall. Our graduates are looking forward to a very special evening
that will mark the conclusion of their days in elementary school. Further
details will be shared with families as they become available.
Grade 6s We are Silent Day
On April 17th, the Grade 6s at Discovery PS were silent all day for
the children who don’t have a voice. This was our silent protest against child labour. It wasn’t easy being silent for the day, but we managed to keep our voices in to support children who have been silenced. We were shocked to find out the harsh conditions that children our age go through across the globe; not many people know about these issues, and that is very frustrating! Altogether, the Grade 6s raised over $500.00 to donate to Free The Children. FTC is a charity that Craig Kielburger started at the age of 12 to help children in developing countries (this proves that you are never too young to make a difference). To help the children who don’t get an education, who have poor health, who have to work, who want to speak out, but can’t, we were silent. It’s time for everyone to be free, it’s time to FREE THE CHILDREN.

Nut Safe School This is a reminder that many students and staff have life
threatening allergies to nuts. As a result, we ask that all snacks
and lunches are nut free. Please take the time to read the labels
on snacks to ensure they are nut safe.
BIRTHDAY TREATS : In order to promote a nut safe
school, we ask that no food is brought to school to be shared with
other children/or to be sent home through the school . Thank you
for co-operation

CELL PHONES & IPOD’s Cellular phones and other electronic devices are disruptive when they are activated at school. Even if used for silent messaging, incoming signals distract student’s attention and can interfere with both learning and teaching. Digital cameras that can be found on cell phones/IPODs can be used in a manner that violates the privacy, dignity and safety of students and staff.
During the school day the use of cell phones and IPOD’s are only to be used under the direct supervision of teachers. If cell phones are not being used for instruction, all cell phones and IPOD’s should be stored in lockers and out of sight. They should not be used to make or receive phone calls or send and receive text messages. In addition, cell phones and other electronic devices are often the target of theft! Leaving them at home is the best option. The office phone may be used in case of emergency! Parents may contact their child through the main office. Parents are encouraged to leave messages for their children at the office. The privacy and dignity of others must be maintained. Students are prohibited from taking or posting photos of other students and staff without consent.

MOVIE NIGHT Discovery Parent Council would like to thank the community for all their support.
We had an amazing turnout for our Movie Night and we raised money for our
Grade 8 students to support their graduation. Thank you again to all the families
who took time out of their busy schedule and demonstrated their Discovery Char-
acter by supporting our school. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Fun Fair
on June 12.

EARTH DAY
Discovery Public School participated in two important Eco initiatives to celebrate Earth Day: the 20-Minute Makeover and Pitch-in Canada litter round-up. These two events were combined for this Friday's Discovery Eco-Dragon event. On Friday, April 25th each class went out with their teacher to their designated area with garden gloves or plastic gloves from home. Each class was given a collec-tion bag for litter round up. For approximately 15-20 minutes, classes collected lit-ter from their designated areas throughout our school yard and our park. Thank you to our students and community for keeping our EARTH clean!
