The Band of the Welsh Guards Director of Music: Major David Barringer MBE

The Band of the Welsh Guards was formed in 1915 in the same year as the Regiment. Their first instruments were presented by the City of Cardiff, an act that enabled the band to carry out its first King’s Guard Mounting on St. David’s Day in 1916. That very evening the band gave its first concert on the stage of the London Opera House and immediately established a reputation for high musical standards. The musicians in the band are drawn from all over the United Kingdom and are permanently based in London where they have the opportunity to enjoy a varied and challenging musical career. They can regularly be seen at the world famous ceremony of the Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace, as well as at the Nation's many other State and Ceremonial occasions. The band has the opportunity to enjoy several diverse performance opportunities and can be seen performing regularly with the Royal Philharmonic and Hallé Orchestras in some of the most spectacular extravaganzas staged in the United Kingdom. Appearances on the BBC's ‘Songs of Praise’ and at prestigious sporting events like the Ashes, the FA Cup Final, the Rugby Union World Cup, Royal Ascot, Tour de France, Wimbledon, and the International Show Jumping Championship at Spruce Meadows Canada have taken the band’s music to a worldwide audience. In 2017 the band was privileged to participate in the Passchendaele 100 WW1 events, performing at the Menin Gate ceremony attended by TRH The King and Queen of the Belgians, and a special BBC production from the Cloth Hall in Ypres’ Market Square with international performers including Dame Helen Mirren and Alfie Boe. The band then went on to a third event at Tyne Cot Ceremony to honour all those who sacrificed their lives in Flanders. The band maintains its links with the 1st Battalion the Welsh Guards' traditional recruiting areas with regular public performances in the heart of Wales, music workshops in Welsh schools and colleges, and charity concerts in aid of recognised Military charities.

The Concert Band of St Catherine’s School Director: Mr Ian Young, Head of Percussion and Contemporary Music The Concert Band has built a reputation over the years for maintaining a high standard of music for a range of occasions. Not only does the band perform at the major school concerts throughout each academic year, but it also provides music for the School’s annual Remembrance Service in November and Speech Day celebrations in July. The band covers a wide selection of music from popular film themes and light classics through to ceremonial and religious music. The aim for each member within the band, many of whom are proficient in more than one instrument, is to perform in a wide variety of styles, and to develop their own musicianship, both as individuals and as part of an ensemble. In addition to this, the rehearsals also focus on learning about programme content and stage presentation. Concert Band has enjoyed working alongside members of the Band of the Welsh Guards this afternoon, and feels very privileged to be playing alongside them once again for you this evening.

There will be a retiring collection following this evening’s concert in aid of Afghan Connection (Charity No. 1092134)
