IN THE BEGINNING “In the Beginning”, written by Judy Bander, is a continuing column, which tells the history of our church. Included are facts, stories, and “things remembered” by those who helped establish St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.

As 1991 Comes to an End, New Building Plans Take Shape

At this time in our church history, the building included the original wing (currently the hall with offices and library) and the worship area in St. Andrew Hall. The Choir Director and Organist, Dick Barnes, performed a concert on Saturday, October 19 with money raised donated to the building fund. It was encouraging the next day, October 20, 1991, that a new church school attendance record was set with a total of 72. New members Richard* & Dorothy Payne were received that day. In November, a new updated member roll stated we had 142 active members with 57 members moved to the inactive roll. Glenn Yates, the architect hired by St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, provided copies of phases three through eight for the new building that would become the Beachum Wing for children’s classrooms. (This hall currently contains mostly St. Andrew Preschool classrooms.) The proposed Committee Restructure Plan was accepted and would be effective January 1, 1992. Frances Robb began working with the acolyte program. By January 1992, she was leading the group and Carolyn Coffman was co-director. Patricia Kelly became our new church secretary. In December, the Tartans and the Thirty Something fellowship groups met at the home of Dick* & Helen* Klaas for what became a tradition open to all adults of the church. The adult Christmas Party with the trading and re-trading of gifts was always fun. The 1991 church year ended with a $4,000 deficit and the need for more classroom space. A Building Committee and a Finance Committee would be elected in January 1992. *Deceased

NEW SESSION MEMBER On January 26, 2020 at the Congregational Meeting, Phil Poe was elected to the class of 2022 as an Elder for a 3-year Initial Term. He will serve on the Property Committee.

TEMPLE TIPS "And now, oh Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” ~Deuteronomy 10:12 Did you make a resolution to get more exercise this year? To improve your health the goal should be at least 30 minutes of moderate level physical activity on most days of the week. Between work, family and other demands on your time you might find it difficult to set aside time to exercise. Make time to exercise a priority, put it on your calendar, build it into your routine. Physical activity should be part of your daily routine. Rake the yard instead of using the sweeper, wash your car instead of going to the car wash, you do the housework instead of hiring a housekeeper, take the stairs instead of the elevator, go for a walk on your lunch break, etc. You can make family time physically active too by planning things that you can do with your children or elderly loved ones. Instead of going to the movies perhaps go to the park, play ball, take a walk or ride bikes together. Evangelism exercise: Toe Touches. Lift your arms and try to reach the ceiling, then reach down and try to touch your toes (or shins, or knees), then reach up, then down again.. we must make plans for reaching out to others!

ST. ANDREW PRAYER TEAM We at St. Andrew believe that intercessory prayer brings the presence, peace, and power of God into situations of need, lightening burdens and offering the compassion of the community of faith. If you would like to be a part of those who have committed to praying for those in need and to join with others in celebration of God’s goodness, contact Beth Lyon-Suhring at [email protected] . When prayer needs arise you will receive prayer requests via email.

Please remember in prayer the following members who have recently lost loved ones: Midge Gray, whose cousin,

Joann, passed away on February 4, 2020. Marion Hale, whose mother, Gladys Mary

Gregoire, passed away on February 7, 2020.

Dear Friends, “Such beautiful, beautiful hands, They’re neither white nor small;

And you, I know, would scarcely think, That they are fair at all.

I’ve looked on hands whose form and hue A sculptor’s dream might be

Yet are those aged, wrinkled hands More beautiful to me.”

What is beauty as it pertains to hands? Probably there cannot be a standard of beauty for hands, because hands will always be judged by what they have done. It is so with the artist’s hands. It is so with a mother’s hands. Hence the author of this heartfelt poem wrote about his mother’s hands.

Much can be told about a person by their hands. While the palmist may claim to be able to read the future from a hand, others can tell a person’s trade or character by their hands. And what of the hands of Jesus? These were the hands that worked with wood in a carpenters’ shop, and then were outstretched to touch and to heal others. Compassion, sensitivity and love would flow from these hands, no doubt calloused from hard labor. However, it was also these hands that were pierced on Good Friday. In that act of piercing, tearing apart muscle and tendon, rendering them crippled and disabled, Jesus identifies with all in this world who suffer in body, mind or spirit. And then, there are the hands of the resurrected Jesus that Thomas is invited to touch. In John’s gospel we read:

“Then Jesus said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here, and see my hands; and take your hand and place it in my side; do

not be faithless, but believe.’”

Paul Brand, a hand surgeon, writes of this incident:

“Why did Jesus want to keep the wounds of his humanity? Wasn’t it because he wanted to carry back with him an eternal reminder of the sufferings of those on earth? He

carried the marks of suffering so he could continue to understand the needs of those suffering now. He wanted

to be one with us forever.”

Life does, at times, hurt and our suffering leaves upon us its mark. How truly consoling to know that Jesus understands our pain and feels for every sorrow, and is forever there to comfort us and heal us with his love. Blessings and peace,

Pastor Gillian

PRAYERS AND SQUARES

Quilts: Big or Little… Your Choice!

Prayer Pocket Squares are small quilted squares with one tie that you can send in a card or letter to a friend, or give to someone at work to show you are thinking of them and praying for them. People do not have to make a request. Look for them in a plastic bin in the atrium. Anyone can just look at the squares in the bin and choose one to give to someone. Say a prayer, tie a knot, place it in a thinking of

you card and give it. Let someone know you care and are praying for them. If you have a friend or family member that you would like to receive a prayer quilt, you may request a Prayers and Squares quilt by completing a request form found at the Welcome Kiosk. Place the form in the mailbox in the office or give it to Frances Jornov. There are many completed quilts in our cabinet. It is a great pleasure to share God's love by giving a quilt to someone. Prayers and Squares will meet on Sat., March 21, at 10:00 a.m. We will only meet once in March. We can use all helpers and you don't need to know how to sew. There are jobs that don't require sewing skills. Come join us to see what is involved in making the prayer quilts, help us with our prayer pocket squares and enjoy some fellowship time.

~Frances Jornov

TWO NEW SMALL GROUPS FORMING St. Andrew will be starting two new small groups for adults during the Lenten season. Just as Advent is a time for preparing for the coming of the Christ child, Lent, the season in the church year between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, is a time for preparing for the coming death and resurrection of Jesus. Christians through the ages have used these six weeks as a time for study, scripture reading, prayer, and introspection. We invite any adults who wish to focus on Jesus’ journey to the cross together in community to join one of these groups. Meeting times will be as follows:

EITHER, Tuesdays, 3/3, 3/17, and 3/31 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. each night

OR, Thursdays, 3/5, 3/19, and 4/2 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. each night

We’ll meet every other week during Lent – three meetings, total - for one and a half hours. We’ll read scripture together, watch a short film clip, talk about what it means to have a God who joined us in the human walk, and pray. Wherever you are on your faith walk, you will be welcome! These groups are intended for St. Andrew members and friends who are not currently a part of any other small group in the church. Groups will be facilitated by Beth Lyon-Suhring, Director of Christian Education at St. Andrew. Contact Beth with questions or to let her know which group you’d like to attend: [email protected] or, call the church at 757-238-3550. Sign-up sheets will also be in the Atrium.

St. Andrew Presbyterian Church Finance Committee Report Through January 31, 2020

January YTD Budget 2020 Budget Income $71,509 $45,108 $541,302 Expenses $48,078 $44,944 $539,320 NET $23,431 $164

Assets/Liabilities Bank Assets $292,125 Mortgage Liabilities $152,113 Balance $618,794 TOTAL $140,012 Monthly Payment $5,200

A blowout month!!!! YAY!!!! Now of course, before we rest on our laurels, there are a few usual January caveats. A number of folks prepay their contributions at the start of the year, so the income numbers for this month are always going to be inflated. However, January also usually has above average expenses, with a number of annual payments hitting in the first month of the year. So, all things considered, these numbers still look really good! Congratulations on the excellent stewardship of our church, and keep up the great work! ~Tom Seymour, Finance & Stewardship Committee

KIRK NIGHT CLASS FOR ADULTS Reel Spirituality - Finding Faith at the Movies It’s a common question, “Have you seen any good movies recently?” On one level watching movies is a form of escape, as we are taken into a whole other world. But they also can teach us some theological truths. Come along on Wednesday evenings and be prepared to consider well known movies from a whole different perspective. Class taught by Pastor Gillian; 6:30 – 7:30 in Room 204 in the Education Building.

SUCCESSFUL NIGHT STAY Thank you for your amazing support of our Night Stay (week-long shelter for those experiencing homelessness)! We logged 449 hours for the week. Our average guests per night was 26. It takes a lot of people to make this happen for setup, transportation, intake, meals, shift work through the night, laundry, and cleanup. We had so many generous donations of money, gift cards, bus passes, clothes, shoes, accessories, underwear, socks, winter gear, towels, washcloths, hygiene products, diapers/wipes, and toys for the children (11 total). Thank you so much for helping with this wonderful ministry!

~Angie Hillis-Baurle

Pastor Gillian’s office hours are Tuesday and Thursday beginning at 8:30

or by appointment at other times.

COLLEGE STUDENT GIFT CARDS The Welcome and Care Committee will once again be sending our college students gift cards as a way of letting them know we are thinking about them and wishing them well on their final exams in May. Preparing for exams can be a stressful and overwhelming time for many. We would like to send each of them a $10 gift card so they can unwind and enjoy some social time during the studying process. A little fun time can go a long way! Next time you’re out, pick up a gift card to Chick Fil A, Starbucks, Subway or Panera … and place it in the office mail box of Sonja Morell, Lara Walker or Angela Snyder before April 12thth. (Or give them directly to Sonja, Lara or Angela) Monetary donations will also be accepted for the committee to purchase gift cards. (Make checks payable to St. Andrew with a note College Gift Cards.) As always, the Welcome and Care Committee appreciates all you do and for your donations. Please contact Angela Snyder if you have any questions at [email protected].

CHECK OUT THESE NEW BOOKS! St. Andrew’s library is located in the office wing of the church, and we’d love for you to explore it. We have two new books on navigating this divided time in our culture. Take a look at these if you’re hungry to learn how to be

part of a countercultural (dare we say Christian?) movement to embrace those who are different from us by listening rather than judging. It has been said that America is run by an “outrage industrial complex” these days. We judge people who disagree with us as beneath contempt, as unworthy human beings. Author, social scientist, musician Arthur C. Brooks’ new book, Love Your Enemies: How Decent People Can Save America from the Culture of Contempt, suggests a better way to bridge divides and mend relationships. We could all use that, right? David B. Capes writes from his deeply-held Christian faith in his book Slow to Judge: Sometimes It’s OK to Listen. Capes suggests that perhaps we could follow the example of Jesus and substitute curiosity and love for

an immediate rush to judgment when we encounter others who disagree with us. Find these and other books in the church library. Sign your name on the card in the back and leave the card in the marked basket. And, fyi: we have a wonderful children’s library on the first floor of the education building. Check that out, too!
