Hello Fellow Badgers!
We have a busy month ahead of us. Please make it to
the Trocks for fish pond bagging and a good time this
coming weekend. Bring your extra specimens for fish

February Meeting
Minutes
Minutes of the February 11, 2017 BLGS Meeting
The meeting was called to order at 11 a.m. in the
basement of the First National Bank building on Monroe
Square by acting president Marv Hanner. Others in
attendance were: Pamela and Ella Rose Hill, Wilma and
Jim Lamont, Jordan Marché, Harold Carter, Bob Gilbert,
Laurie, Dan Jayden, and Erin Trocke. Introductions
followed, and new members (the Hills and Lamonts)
were welcomed.
Jordan moved, and Erin seconded, that the minutes of
the previous meeting, as they had been published in the
BLGS newsletter, be approved. The motion was passed
by acclaim.
Dan next gave the treasurer’s report, with a balance
indicating that the club is solvent.
The first door prize was won by Pam Hill –– a nice
polished piece of petrified wood.
Under old business, Laurie repeated the call for
donations of specimens for the fish-pond bagging and
spinner game. That activity will take place at the Trocke
farm exactly four weeks hence, on Saturday, March 11.
Directions, etc., will be provided in the next newsletter.
The upcoming field trip to the Lizzadro Museum in
Illinois (on Saturday, Feb. 25) was also re-announced.
Members will need to arrange their own transportation,
and should plan to arrive at the Museum at 11 a.m.
There is a modest admission fee. Details about the trip
will also be released in a future e-mail message.
The second door prize was won by Wilma Lamont –– a
nice spray of aragonite crystals from Morocco.
Under new business, Dan mentioned that he had
brought in a binocular microscope and new digital
camera that can display pictures in real time on a
monitor. He also brought in a number of micro-
mounted mineral specimens that members could
explore with the microscope-and-camera setup after
the meeting.
Jordan announced that he had brought in two boxes of
free rock/mineral specimens from Arizona that had
been collected recently by his wife Teri and show-chair
Deb Wehinger. One box contained specimens of
kyanite, and the other pieces of chrysocolla on
hematite. Some members helped themselves to the
specimens after the meeting. The rest were destined for
the fish-pond or spinner game.
Under show business, Jordan passed around some full-
page color posters describing the show and speaker
lineup that was primarily intended for any Monroe
members to take and distribute locally. [The bulk of the
posters had been given to Deb to similarly distribute at
the concurrent MSHA training session held at Jack
Hoxie’s shop in Janesville.] But as there were no
Monroe members present, and the number of posters
was insufficient to distribute to those in attendance,
Dan subsequently copied around a hundred additional
posters, and about ten each were given to members to
distribute in their respective towns.
Sign-up sheets for display cases, working at the show,
etc., were again passed around at the meeting and
some new signatures garnered.
The third door prize was won by Ella Rose Hill, a fine,
sparkly specimen of greenish fuchsite from Brazil.
The March Field trip will the annual show.
Please see the sign up forms later in the
newsletter, we still need volunteers to
work at the show, a couple of show cases
are still available for displays. Please let us
know asap if you would like to have a
show case and if you can help out with
set-up/tear down, at the club table, the
sales table, admissions or the kids
activities!! We appreciate the help.
The March meeting will be Fish
Pond bagging at the Trocke’s.
Bring your donations and a dish to
pass. We will be putting together
around 600 – 700 bags this year,
assuming we have enough
material. Watch for a separate
email w/the time & directions.
Hope to see you all there!
With no other business to conduct, Jim Lamont moved,
and Erin seconded, that the meeting be adjourned. The
motion passed by acclaim and the meeting was ended
at 11:30 a.m.
Members then watched a DVD entitled, “The Tanzanite
Story,” about the extraction, selection, and faceting of
this highly-sought gemstone from the four mining sites
in Tanzania, Africa and which is heat-treated to bring
out its rich blue color.
For those members who stayed afterwards, Dan
showed specimens of micro-mounted minerals with his
microscope-and-camera setup, while several others
practiced wire-wrapping of polished specimens on the
back table.
The treats were also furnished by the Trockes, to whom
thanks should be extended.
Respectively submitted,
Jordan Marché

MSHA TRAINING
On February 11th and 12th, we had our MSHA (Mine
Safety and Health Administration) training class, held at
Jack and Kim Hoxie’s store – the Mystic Moraine in
Janesville, WI. We had a great turnout of 24 people,
starting each morning at 7 a.m. and ran roughly 12
hours per day. Our MSHA trainer, Jeremiah Sinks,
travelled from Indiana to train our club and others that
were interested.
Jeremiah kept the group entertained with anecdotes,
games and real life experiences. We had great
camaraderie and we potlucked the training with many
good eats and treats.
If there is enough interest, Jeremiah would be willing
to come again and give another training for those that
couldn’t make it or if another club would be interested
in doing one.
