Elegance in Chocolate: One ‘Sweet’ Event

The Salvation Army held their annual Elegance in Chocolate event for the 12th time at the Masonic Temple with this year’s theme of “An Evening in Paris.” Those with a sweet tooth were out in full-force indulging in chocolates. With a smorgasbord of chocolate covered treats — such as bacon, Oreos and cookie dough — the event has given chocolate lovers an exquisite selection of chocolate for over a decade.

The Salvation Army’s Capt. David Means said the event goes hand-in-hand with those looking to support the Army by taking part in the unique event. When asked what he believes makes the event a pillar to the Army, Means told The Era, “One, people love chocolate, so that’s an easy connection.” He added, “People love to be involved in that, and a lot of people know that it goes to a good cause to help support the Salvation Army and all that we do within the community. People get to support a great organization and at the same time be able to have an awesome chocolate experience.” The Captain said he sees visitors mostly from the Bradford area but said he saw some new faces at Monday’s event.Stephanie Johnson said the event is made successful by “a great committee and a great community that supports the Salvation Army.” She made another point we certainly agree with, adding, “Who doesn’t love chocolate?”

CARE for Children celebrates Early Learners!Erie Traveling Zoo visited Rainbow Corner Preschool in February and presented Smitten for Mittens, a program which revolved around the book The Mitten by Jan Brett. Preschoolers listened to the story, learned facts about each animal, and visited with a hamster, rabbit, collared dove, and skunk, some of the animals featured in the story. The zoo visit is incorporated into the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) curriculum at Rainbow Corner with zoo-themed activities, stories, and games. Rainbow Corner Preschool also celebrated its early learners during the ‘Week of the Young Child’ April 8th-12th. Along with fun themed days throughout the week, special lessons revolved around books by author Eric Carle. The students participated in art-themed activities, enjoyed a performance by musical guest Shane Oschman, and explored food and cooking by helping to make snacks like trail mix and pizza.

The weather was cold and rainy as people waited in line under a tent and umbrellas for the grand opening of the Herbology Dispensary at 109 Main Street in Bradford.

Described as a “Medical Cannabis Dispensary,” the facility is operated by parent company Grassroots, which grows, processes and sells cannabis through a unique, vertically integrated business model, with one of 13 approved grow licenses in the state. Officials with the company, based in Chicago, said the 3,000-square-foot facility has hired between 10 and 15 local people as trained herbologists. Grassroots also has dispensaries in Altoona, DuBois, Gettysburg, Morton and a facility in the Philadelphia area.

Dispensaries admit people with medical cards who have been certified by a doctor as having one or more of 21 qualifying medical conditions. Company officials have noted that Medicaid, Medicare and medical insurance will not pay for the products; therefore, customers are expected to pay cash. Several of those in line said they had chronic pain and preferred using cannabis to help with their condition instead of opioids prescribed by doctors. The dispensary is open 10 am to 7 pm Monday through Friday, and 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Walk-in customers with medical cards will be admitted. For more information, visit www.herbology dispensary.com.

During the school year, 20 students with the Criminal Justice Club at Bradford Area High School conducted fundraisers with one goal in mind — to visit Washington, D.C., and see monuments, museums and buildings of interest.

When the club, under the supervision of lead advisor Hiel “Butch” Bartlett, finally made it to the nation’s capital, they hadn’t expected an added bonus of visiting with a number of Honor Flight veterans. Also serving as one of the chaperones was assistant adviser and School Resource Officer Matt Gustin. While the club members enjoyed every aspect of the trip, several said the best part of the experience was their encounter with Honor Flight veterans from the Philadelphia and Arizona areas.

A group of veterans from the Bradford area, brought together and honored by the school district before departure, also traveled to Washington with the area’s Buffalo Niagara Honor Flight.

“We met Honor Flights (groups) who were visiting and we got to hear some of their stories,” said club member Ellen Collins. Another student with the club added, “It was our goal to shake every hand of veterans we saw.” Club member Alan Burritt said he, too, liked meeting the veterans. “At the end when we left (a memorial site) they literally yelled, ‘Hey green shirts, you made our day,’” Gustin said, explaining the Bradford High group wore bright, lime green shirts during some of their tours.

Let’s talk about...How to Get More Reviews for Your BusinessThere’s a joke in this title. The easiest way to get more reviews is to stink at what you do. People are always more apt to give a negative review than a positive one. Then there are the people who never review anything. You’ll often read, “I don’t usually write reviews but this experience was so amazing I had to…” The truth of the matter is a giant problem for businesses: • People tend to write negative reviews because they feel vindicated in doing so. • People don’t review good service. They (only) review what knocks their socks off.

This means one bad customer interaction and there’s a post about you. Twenty good ones, and nothing. You had better hope there’s a shining moment in your interaction with a customer. Those kind of odds aren’t inspirational but there are things you can do to entice people to write reviews for you more often. Ask for Them This is the easiest approach out there. A local carpet cleaner made my carpets look amazing. At the end of their work, they asked if there was anything more that they could do for me, anything I wanted, needed, or was interested in knowing. They made it a point to make sure I understood the best cleaning methods to maintain the look. They certainly provided good customer service and a great product. They handed me a business card (which even contained the copy “Love us? Please review us.”) and said they’d love to earn my business again. Then the other person handed me a few more “in case you know someone.” Next they told me how competitive their business is. How everyone relies on reviews and without them, a brand new business like theirs was not competitive. They made me fully understand how a review is essential to their ability to grow. While they did impress me, and I would’ve certainly used them again, and referred them if any one I knew was asking for carpet cleaners, you know what would’ve likely happened had they not asked me for a review? We would’ve said our pleasantries as I walked them to the door. I would’ve looked at my watch, realized how far behind I was in my work, and promised myself to write a review that night after the kids went to bed. Sometime during the course of that 8-hour stretch, it would’ve slipped my mind.

Take the Time to Educate on Their ImportanceNot only did the cleaners ask for reviews, they told me why they needed them. In the classic “Xerox” study published in the book Influence by Robert Cialdini, he showed that when people interrupted others in a long line to use the copier – as long as the interrupter used the word “because” in explaining why they must interrupt – 93% of the people let the person cut. Even when the excuse was as weak as: “May I use the Xerox machine? Because I have to make copies.” Using “because” influences behavior to the point that the words following the “because” don’t seem to matter. In addition to giving customers a “because” to your request, create collaterals around why writing reviews on Yelp (and other sites) help businesses. Many people don’t take the time to think about the correlation between positive reviews and business growth.

Answer Your ReviewsIf someone is deciding whether they want to do business with you or whether they want to leave you a review after doing business with you, they may skim your existing reviews. If they see a cantankerous person combatting those who leave negative reviews, arguing with them and belittling them, they may think twice about you and the kind of person you are. If, however, you respond to all of your reviews – either positive or negative – with helpful information, you will appear to be someone who cares. We do business with people we like! 83 million people visit YELP (alone) each month. Isn’t it time you leverage those reviews into getting more business? Don’t just sit around and wait for reviews. Use these tips to make them happen.

Members of the Bradford Regional Airport Authority were recently presented with an update on the terminal building rehabilitation project. Architect Ethan Hine, VP and chief architect of KTH Architects, shared renderings of the planned upgrades, with major interior/exterior improvements that affect almost every section of the building. Interior updates include LED lighting throughout, a new gas fireplace and boiler, new flooring, remodeled

restrooms, stone columns, digital marketing space, a warming up space and increased space for non-airport

related events. “We’re catering to the current generation by also including cell phone charging space,” Hine said. Outside, travelers and visitors will notice new signage, new canopies and a new roof over the drive-through lane. “The building’s exterior will be low-maintenance materials,” said airport manager Alicia Dankesreiter. Advertising for bids for the project is slated for prior to the authority’s June meeting. After bids are opened and the contracts awarded, construction should take approximately six months, to begin later this year or in early 2020. Many of the plans will adhere to development objectives set forth in PA Wilds’ Design Guide for Community Character, Dankesreiter reported. In additional airport-related news, Southern Airways Express has expanded its advertising campaign into Warren County, a potential new market now that Jamestown no longer has a commercial airport. SAE’s chief commercial officer Mark Cestari also shared that Southern Airways Express and Mokulele Airlines, which SAE purchased recently, recorded the highest “On Time” rate for any American airline — 93 percent, compared to Southwestern’s 63 percent. To be “On Time,” airlines must depart or arrive within 15 minutes of scheduled times. “This is extremely important for us with our interline agreement with American Airlines,” Cestari said. Southern Airways Express will host a Customer Appreciation Party at Bradford Regional Airport from 4 to 7 pm on Tuesday, June 11. See the image at right - also found on Bradford Regional Airport’s Facebook page, for more information!

Temporarily (we hope!) the Runway Bar and Grill closed on May 12. The delicious menu options, excellent service, and unique runway-view atmosphere of the Runway Bar and Grill were appreciated by local residents and travelers visiting the area alike. We join their customers in saying thank you and best wishes to the owners and staff!

Dankesreiter said, “We have a few exciting things planned during the absence of a full-time operator, including fly-in breakfasts, and I’m looking into the possibility of a drive- or fly-in food truck party in the airport parking lot.” Watch the airport’s Facebook page for more details on upcoming events!

Main Street UpdateStreetscape construction is well underway! Renovation is always a challenging process, but the results will be a significant improvement for downtown! Sidewalk is almost done in front of our office; you may have noticed the new location of the soon-to-be crosswalk. The #1 question we’ve heard: What about the trees? The Bradford Pear trees were beyond their lifespan for streetscape use and in poor condition. New trees - a few varieties well-suited to our climate - are included in the project plans!

50 Things to Post to Instagram for More Business FollowersBy Christina R. Green Instagram is a love/hate kind of platform. As a Gen X writer, I don’t get it. Yeah, the pictures are pretty but for me personally, I see it as a giant time suck. Maybe you feel the same way. However, my personal opinion (or yours) about the platform are irrelevant to our business.

The thing that matters is that there are about a billion people using it. (Yes, billion with a “b.”) In fact, Instagram has become a way of life for many. There are people who view their lives in Instagrammable moments. They build streaks of continuous days of posting. Plus, it’s owned by Facebook. So regardless of personal feelings, it has some business value if your customer demographic is on there. And chances are it is. Who’s on Insta? So before convincing you that you need to increase your business presence on Instagram, let’s talk about who’s on there. If your ideal customer is, you should be too. If not, you can be an old curmudgeon about the platform like I am.

There are: • One billion active monthly users (that’s an eighth of the world’s population)• 500 million use it daily• 71% of global users are under 35• 72% of teens are using the platform• 28% of online adults in the US use it• 25% of smartphone owners use it See more interesting stats here: https://blog.hootsuite.com/instagram-statistics/

Now that you know if your ideal demographic is on Instagram or not, check out the enclosed insert for 50 post ideas to get them more engaged with your brand!

(Hint: Pets - your own or those that might stop by to visit your business - are on the list!)
