Leadership McKean Class of 2015 Projects

BACC NEWSLETTER | 814-368-7115 | bradfordchamber.com | www.facebook.com/BradfordPAChamber

Pennsylvania Downtown Center(PDC) recently presented nine awards during their annual statewide Townie Awards gala. The Townie Awards are a tradition designed to recognize the commonwealth’s core communities and individuals for creation and implementation of projects, programs and events that exemplify the goals of PDC’s community revitalization mission. Eligible communities consist of PDC’s nearly 200 member organizations, including Main Street and Elm Street programs, making the Townies a competitive award process each year.

This year, revitalization and beautification efforts in Bradford have earned two of these prestigious awards. Bradford’s Main Street Program was honored for its organizational partnership with the Bradford Area Chamber of Commerce in downtown partnership projects, while the Elm Street Program was honored for asset enhancement for building new housing at Pearl and School Streets.

Bradford’s Elm Street manager Lisa Keck attended the conference in Lancaster in June. Mayor Tom Riel was in Harrisburg the day of the awards, and was asked to attend and accept the award on behalf of the Main Street partnership.

“This is further proof that our Main Street area is being revitalized, with the occupied storefronts and building owners sprucing up the downtown,” Riel said. Explaining some of the projects the award honors, Riel named the holiday lights, the work in Veterans Square and the makeover of the gazebo. “Since the award was determined, the planting of the flowers in the square and the metal benches show the collaboration continues,” he said.

BACC is proud to have played a part in multiple downtown partnership efforts that helped to bring this honor to Bradford.

For the Elm Street program, Keck said this isn’t the first time it has been recognized. Bradford’s program won a Townie honorable mention for community greening in 2009 for the community garden. “We are thrilled to accept another Townie for years of grassroots revitalization efforts in our state designated Elm Street programs,” Keck said. “The award for asset enhancement shines a statewide spotlight on the diligent efforts being made locally to realize improvements for residents in an effort to facilitate economic growth.”

This year’s five Leadership McKean team projects again represent the diversity of interests among the program’s participants. As always, we were impressed by the commitment demonstrated by each group to bring powerful, creative ideas to life that could have a long-lasting, positive impact throughout the communities within McKean County.

Hi Everyone,

Isn’t it amazing how the spring and summer months fly by, but those winter months just hang on? This weekend it will be July 4th already!

Today, I wanted to use this column to talk about Leadership McKean. Since January 2013, the Chamber has administered Leadership McKean, and we have just completed our third year with 24 graduates!

Friday, June 12th was Leadership McKean graduation, and traditionally the participants have been broken up into five groups. Each group is then required to present a project that would benefit the county, with the presentations followed by lunch and our graduation ceremony. Every year this is the highlight of our program, and I really look forward to seeing what the participants have come up with for projects.

This year like other years was amazing, and I have to commend the groups for all of their hard work and dedication. The groupprojects were well thought out and meaningful, and we are happy to share more information about them in today’s newsletter.

We are ready to start planning our 10th year of Leadership McKean. It’s hard to believe that we have come this far -- the founders will tell you they never thought it would go this long -- but we have even reached the point where we must limit the number of participants per business, so that a wide range of companies and organizations is represented.

If there is someone in your organizationwho would like to participate in this year’sLeadership McKean program, email [email protected] for an application. As always, stop down to 121 Main Street and have a cup of coffee with us, and share your ideas!

Leadership

BACC NEWSLETTER | 814-368-7115 | bradfordchamber.com | www.facebook.com/BradfordPAChamber

JULY 28Now I have a question for you: what would’ve happened if Rosa Parks had simply gotten off the bus? Would Martin Luther King Jr. have led a civil rights movement? Would the Civil Rights Act of 1968 ever been signed into law?

We cannot talk about leadership, without talking about character. Leadership cannot exist without a deep respect for oneself as wellas others. It cannot exist without a clear understanding of our individual values, and our most closely held beliefs. If you don’t believe me look at politics today. Are we led by men and women with a sound sense of what is right? Or are we led by politicians who hire polling organizations to find out what the public believes and then leap out in front to say that they believe that too?

I would argue that you cannot lead without a true understanding of your own values and beliefs. Those values and beliefs will be a foundation for leadership that you provide in both your personal and professional lives.

Secondly, I stipulate that our best leaders are often reluctant ones. Have you seen the movie Lincoln? Why after dozens of presidents do we still talk about his story? Did this man choose to lead our country through one of its bloodiest periods? Did Rosa Parks really want to start the civil rights movement, or were her feet simply too tired and her respect for herself too great to get off the bus?

It is the yoke that lies in front of us. Our choice to become leaders is to pick up the yoke and put it on, or step over it and not be bothered. I would make the argument to you today that great leaders were often reluctant ones.

I’m not laying this in front of you to reflect any great personal insights, or to make any abstract philosophical arguments. I’m laying this in front of you to ask you what you are going to do when your phone rings and someone is asking you to sit on the board of XXX in your community. I’m laying this in front of you because when the local school district, or planning commission, or local Authority needs your time and knowledge, will you say yes?

Look at the leaders you have met during the course of Leadership McKean. Yes, they lead their companies, but what else do they do? Let me tell you: they sit on the board of the local hospital, or Beacon Light, or Pitt Bradford, or the Guidance Center. They are up early Saturday morning helping out with the local ball fields or the local trails. They work on neighborhood improvement projects and fundraising to support their community. Because you see, the last quality of leadership is the understanding that the responsibility goes beyond yourself, your family, and your job. Your responsibility is your community. One of my great worries when I look at our organizations today in McKean County, is who will lead tomorrow? Will that be you?

--keynote address from Leadership McKean graduation

Welcome graduates of the 2015 Leadership McKean program. My name is Rick Seager and I am President and CEO of Beacon Light Behavioral Health Systems. It is my honor to be with you today. I have spent most of the past decade as the President and CEO of Beacon Light Behavioral Health Systems. During that time we have expanded our service lines, added to our employee base, and increased our revenues. Our most recent venture, affiliating with Stairways Behavioral Health of Erie, effectively doubled our number of employees and nearly doubled our revenues. It also greatly expanded our ability to provide needed mental health programs in the communities we serve. But whether we are talking about a strategic growth initiative in the mental health arena, the introduction of a new product line at Zippo, a new multi-million dollar piece of diagnostic equipment at the hospital, or technology advancements in the oil and gas industry, each effort to expand the breadth and width of our communities is based on the paradigm of leadership.

I want to take a moment to just talk briefly about leadership. It isone of the most overused terms in the English language. Today youare graduating from a program called Leadership McKean. Thereis some inference by the fact that your company sent you here, and allowed you to put aside your responsibilities at work to attend, that you have potential as our future leaders. Over 16 years as a consultant, I invested time and resources in over 40 organizations; public, private and governmental. If I sat with any group and asked them if they saw themselves as leaders in their organizations and communities, they would respond affirmatively. After all, who likes to see themselves as a follower? Would you have attended this program if it were called McKean County followers?

If so, what are the qualities that constitute leadership? A recent article in Forbes magazine lists them as: competence, commitment, positive attitude, creativity, intuitive sense, and the ability to inspire others. Does that about cover it?

For just a moment I want to take you back to a warm evening in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955. A 42-year-old African-American woman refused to give up her seat to a white rider on a bus. She was arrested for violation of Alabama’s segregation laws. Everyone know the story? Who is it about? Did Rosa Parks refuse to give up her seat because she attended a course on leadership and civic responsibility? Did she do so to represent the rights of the African-American population in the United States? I would postulate that perhaps she did it because her feet hurt! And perhaps just a bit more than that. Perhaps she did it because she held the deep-seated value that as a human being she had every right to be treated as an equal to any other human being.

Ron’s message...continued from page 3 Over the past several years we have seen some amazing projects that have definitely benefited the residents of the county, and once again I am proud that Leadership McKean was responsible.

Leadership McKean Class of 2015 Projects

Youth Leadership McKean Group members: Cheyanne Amidon, Teri Cannon, Bucky Clark, Sami Placer, and Ryan Race Youth Leadership McKean would involve students from the county’s five high schools, and would work to identify and encourage future leaders, prepare students for the future, and help them develop a greater understanding of the needs of their communities.

Establishing Trauma Informed Care Delivery SystemsGroup members: Kimberly Engstrom, Aimee Kaple, Chelsea Place, Kevin Smith, and Tom TaylorTrauma informed care looks at the prevalence and long-term impact of trauma and aims to respond by building a trauma informed network that supports the individuals and community services throughout the county in a collaborative manner.

Leadership McKean Lends a Paw to the McKean County SPCAGroup members: Tonya Ackley, Nick Hossfeld, Jennifer Morgan, and Megan Simms This group met with the McKean County SPCA and looked at their branding and marketing in an effort to help them reach people more effectively with the messages they need the community to see and hear, including upgrades to signage, their web site, and a “Cats are Not Wild Animals” social media campaign.

Lindsay’s LightGroup members: Becky Greenberg, Jennifer Kirk, Charlotte Layton, Shane Reid, and Dayna WilliamsThe mission of Lindsay’s Light is to provide a transitional structured environment to empower and heal the lives and families of women recovering from addiction. The group shared powerful testimonies and statistics regarding the impact of addiction on women and the lack of transitional services currently available to them locally.

5th Grade Walking Challenge: Stepping StudentsGroup members: Jacob Devolder, Susan Freer, Kathy Gibson, Taylor Lubi, and Jodie WagnerThis group worked with 5th grade teachers from School Street and Kane Elementary Schools to create a walking challenge, incorporating pedometers and motion-based activities into the classroom in an effort to encourage students to improve their overall health and wellness.

Leadership McKean aims to educate and guide emerging leaders throughout McKean County. For more information about the Leadership McKean program or to obtain an application for the class of 2016, please contact Kara Kennedy at [email protected].

1st Annual Bradford Fourth of July Flag Rally

Organizers of an upcoming Fourth of July event challenge Bradfordians to take one hour out of their day to show respect for the patriotic holiday as a community. The celebration will be held from 12noon-1pm on July 4th in Veterans’ Square.

Participants are asked to bring an American flag and their families to the all-American celebration, which will include a patriotic sing-along and a ceremony honoring veterans and their families. There will be a free hot dog for everyone.

The rally was an idea conceived by The Friendship Table’s board of directors. “We are proud of our country and generous, friendly community. We are tired of negative disrespect for our country’s flag and freedom.” The eventwill include a ceremonial presentation of a flag (pictured above) that was flown over the Pennsylvania Capital building on June 1st.

ASCENSION PRESCHOOL IS NOW ENROLLING STUDENTS FOR THE 2015-2016 SCHOOL YEAR

Ascension Preschool offers one combined

class for 3 and 4 year old children. Class

is held from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

Monday through Friday, following the

Bradford Area School District calendar.

The preschool is housed in the education

wing on the second floor of the church,

occupying the former Wee World Nurse-

ry School classroom. We will enroll a

maximum of 12 students who are super-

vised by a classroom teacher and teach-

er's aide.

Ascension Preschool is a ministry of the

Episcopal Church of the Ascension dedi-

cated to offering an excellent early

childhood learning program to encourage

children’s academic, physical, emotional,

social and spiritual growth in a safe and

loving environment.

Because we are committed to offering

excellent early childhood learning to all

children, full and partial need-based

scholarships are available.

Ascension Preschool offers a classic pre-

school experience utilizing the HighScope

Curriculum, a research based and child

focused program that uses the carefully

designed "active participatory learning"

process to achieve powerful, positive out-

comes. HighScope lessons are supple-

mented with traditional teaching and

some Montessori methods. Children en-

rolled in the program will also engage in

imaginative play, experiential learning op-

portunities and age appropriate religious
