Hear ye! Hear ye! Yes! I’m talking to ye! Folks here are in hysterics. Many have fallen on hard times. Salaries have been slashed, there’s rampant unemployment, and the people in charge are just fighting with each other!

But enough about ye! Here in Malvaria, it’s 1648 P.T. (panto time) and trouble is stirring. Our heroes have disappeared from the land. Bravery and courage are scarce. No one stands up for what she or he believes, swashing any buckles, or fighting any duels. And duels are forbidden, so it takes twice the courage to fight them!

We need heroes like in the earlier years — like the French Musketeers, a highly selective cavalry unit of the Royal Guard known for their boldness and valor. Musketeers like the ones in that trilogy of novels by Alexandre Dumas, who describes them as “a legion of Caesars, whom the King admires and whom the Cardinal [grrrrr] dreads.”

That Cardinal, Mazarotti [grrrrr], that Falconer who, instead of tending to the elite Royal Falcons — Gyrfalcon: falcon of the king and the boss of the cast; Peregrine: falcon of earls and knights; Aplomado: prized falcon of the New World; and Kestrel: falcon of altar boys and other children — is using them to carry out his dastardly deeds! That despot Mazarotti [grrrrr], who is keeping the boy King Hughy under control with a video game system while he writes mean and generally nonsensical laws!

And so ...

Will ye duel to save us from cruel rule?

Will ye boo and cheer, maybe shed a tear, and unite to fight like a musketeer?

Will ye rise up and heed the call, All for One and One for All!

Loading up the Panto Drawer: Playwright Kathryn Petersen on the origin of The Three Musketeers (The Later Years)

From 1844 to 1850, installments of Alexandre Dumas’ historical novels The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, and The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years Later were published in a French magazine. The trilogy, also known as the d’Artagnan romances, is set in the 17th century during the reigns of Louis XIII, Cardinal Richelieu, Cardinal Mazarin, and Louis XIV and follows the adventures of the bold and brave cavalier d’Artagnan, whose memoirs Dumas claims to have discovered while doing research on Louis XIV at the Royal Library.

Panto playwright, Kathryn Petersen, talks about her approach to adapting this epic story:

“I read both The Three Musketeers and Twenty Years After. I enjoyed them a lot. In thinking about writing a panto for our audiences, I asked myself, what is essential to the spirit and intention of the original stories? What I came up with: rich characters, a series of swashbuckling adventures, ‘All for one and one for All’, a group of friends who has each others’ backs, and sword fights and plumes. Twenty Years After gave me older heroes.

“What it did not give me was significant too. It did not give me a clear and memorable plot. This freed me to create my own story as I honored the essentials listed above. To create the plot, I went back to the time period Dumas chose for his stories — the reigns of Louis the XIII and XIV. This provided me with great plot inspiration in the structure of a young king being shaped by his mother, a powerful Cardinal (Richelieu and later Mazarin), a coup d’etat, the existence of a Grand Falconer, and a host of other details woven through.

“The question emerged — if our heroes are absent, feeble or even dead, who will rise up and take their place? The panto form allowed me to answer it with, ‘why a girl, a dog, and a chicken of course.’

“Pantos are like your beloved messy kitchen drawer where you can find the odd utensil, the duck sauce from the Chinese take-out you had last month, the tea ball shaped like a house you never use, the beloved wooden spoon passed down from your grandmother, a fortune from a fortune cookie that unsettled you. Everything in there belongs because it is somehow connected to the inhabitants of the house’s life.

“In this musketeers panto, the drawer’s contents reflect Dumas novels, the history they were set in, current events, the panto form [and all of its conventions], our multi-generational audience, our own artistic pool, and a pinch of wishful thinking.

“As I age, I find that adventures come and go but true life companions reveal themselves over time when they keep showing up.”

VISIONWe’ll make a future rooted in our history of artistic achievement

and fiscal discipline. Our core values are these: excellence in the quality of our plays and programs; service to our community; depth and longevity in our relationships; ongoing engagement with our company, audiences, students, teachers, and funders; and dedication to arts education. They inspire and guide us as we aim to become a place where people of all ages and backgrounds enjoy a range of theatre experiences that begins with entertainment and invites deep learning. We seek to become essential to the civic and cultural life of the Philadelphia region and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

MISSIONPeople’s Light, a professional theatre in Chester County,

Pennsylvania, makes plays drawn from many sources to entertain, inspire, and engage our community. We extend our mission of making and experiencing theatre through arts education programs that excite curiosity about, and deepen understanding of, the world around us. These plays and programs bring people together and provide opportunities for reflection, discovery, and celebration.

ABOUT PEOPLE’S LIGHTFounded in 1974,

People’s Light serves as one of Pennsylvania’s

largest professional non- profit theatres, known

for our resident company of artists, eclectic mix

of productions, and innovative work with young people. In our

8-9 play season, we present stories drawn from ancient times through tomorrow that have direct relevance to our communities and their concerns. In support of this range, we produce classics and contemporary plays, and commission and produce new work: of our 410 productions, over a third (160) have been world or regional premieres.

At People’s Light we enhance our stage work with a variety of surround activities that connect us with many Delaware Valley communities near our seven-acre Malvern campus. Arts Discovery extends our mission with school residencies, student matinees that bring youth from 21 high schools to People’s Light each year for free, and a broad array of theatre classes for grades K through 12. This suite of education programs inspires and informs our production work in a reciprocal dance of influence and support. New Play Frontiers explores our American identity by commissioning leading playwrights to create plays informed by meaningful stories of nearby populations, and simultaneously develops audiences with a stake in the work. Community Matters sparks dialogue about vital social issues with free staged readings and town hall-style discussions co-hosted by the Theatre and local service organizations.

People’s Light has always called Chester County home. In 1979 we moved to our current location in Malvern, which includes two black box theatres with 340 and 160 seats respectively; offices; scenic shops; rehearsal halls; classrooms; a restored 18th-century farmhouse to house guest artists; the Bistro restaurant; and the Farmhouse banquet and catering facility that can be rented for special events. The Theatre employs 100 full- and permanent-part-time artists and staff members, most of whom live within 15 miles of the campus, and almost 200 guest artists each season from Philadelphia, new york, Washington D.C., and beyond. We operate with an annual budget of $5.9 million and serve 77,000 patrons and guests each year.
