The Road to 36In 1919, after decades of fighting and several failed attempts, Congress passed the 19th Amendment, which established American women’s right to vote. But the battle for suffrage wasn’t over. The legislatures in three-quarters of the states would also have to vote to ratify the amendment before it would officially become part of the Constitution. The race to 36 was on. BY JENNIFER HARLAN AND VERONICA CHAMBERS
This game was originally created for the book “Finish the Fight!: The Brave and Revolutionary Women Who Fought for the Right to Vote,” written by the New York Times journalists Veronica Chambers, Jennifer Schuessler, Amisha Padnani, Jennifer Harlan, Sandra E. Garcia and Vivian Wang.
“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”
