THE KEY CENTRE

The Commonwealth Key Centre of Teaching and Research in Transport Management is a joint venture between the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies in the University of Sydney Business School (ITLS‐Sydney) and the Institute of Transport Studies in the Department of Civil Engineering at Monash University, Melbourne (ITS‐Monash). The Key Centre was established in 1995; for 17 years the Australian federal government has continued to recognise it as a centre of excellence in teaching and research in all areas of transport management including supply chain management, transport economics, transport engineering, transport planning, and transport modelling.

OUR CONSTITUTION

The primary object of the Key Centre is to undertake graduate teaching, executive programs, grant and contract research and development in the fields of transport and supply chain management studies. The work of the Key Centre also has the following objectives:

• To provide a focus for University work in areas of transport and logistics management and to establish an ambience attractive to those committed to excellence in graduate transport and logistics management programs and research.

• To collaborate, to the fullest extent possible, with other parties having an interest in transport and logistics management studies and its applications.

• To offer specialised training courses, workshops, short courses and seminars on topics of interest in the area of transport and logistics management.

• To seed the development, in Australia, of innovative ideas in transport and logistics policy and professional practice in which the Key Centre plays a role.

These objectives are achieved by the Key Centre through:‐

• developing and offering graduate transport and logistics management programs, industry programs, certificates, executive programs and short courses;

• bringing high quality transport and logistics management programs to people outside Sydney and Melbourne (both nationally and globally), as well as widening the offerings of courses within Melbourne and Sydney, through access to courses provided by both ITLS‐Sydney and ITS‐Monash;

• contributing to Australia’s growing participation in the Asia Pacific region in a leadership role in transport and logistics management;

• widening the range of courses available for middle level professional managers in critical areas of transport and logistics management not currently served;

• equipping managers in all disciplines (i.e. , engineering, economics, planning), the small business sector and local government to succeed in the face of technological, economic and institutional change;

• building on the recognised need for stronger links between education of engineers, planners, policy analysts and managers in transport and logistics management;

• undertaking research to develop state‐of‐the‐art management practices and technical methods; and

• transferring the knowledge developed through research to client groups through the Key Centre’s publications, workshops, conferences, seminars, and by participation in networks of transport and logistics stakeholders.

DIRECTOR’S REPORT

2012 marks the 17th year since the establishment of the Key Centre. The individual nodes have a much longer independent history: the transport group at ITS‐Monash celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2009 and this year ITLS‐Sydney celebrated 21 years as an institute.

On June 30th ITLS‐Sydney celebrated its 21 years with over 120 guests at the University. Our special international guests were Professor Juan de Dios Ortúzar (Chile), Professor Jackie Walters (ITLS‐Africa, South Africa) and Professor John Preston (United Kingdom). The NSW Minister of Transport (The Hon Gladys Berejiklian MP), The University of Sydney Provost (Professor Stephen Garton), members of the Board of Advice, alumni and past staff were in attendance at this gala occasion. I recommend the videos of the event at – http://sydney.edu.au/business/itls ‐ especially the video prepared in advance of the event to profile the achievements of ITLS‐Sydney over the last 21 years. Such events are refreshing occasions that not only acknowledge our history but also give us a great sense of future. The Vice Chancellor at Sydney (Dr Michael Spence) wrote a message of appreciation which we reproduce in the following section.

The Key Centre has grown to 32 permanent academics and researchers supported by seven professional staff and complemented by 12 honorary and adjunct affiliates and sessional lecturers. We welcomed an unprecedented 13 new staff members in 2012, however, at ITLS‐Sydney, we also said farewell to Drs Zheng Li and Ada Suk‐Fung Ng and to Bart Ahluwalia, Russell Familiar, Anne Fernando and Christine Prasad. ITS‐Monash welcomed Dr Terry Liu to the lecturing staff and Dr Marilyn Johnson and Omid Ejtemai as Research Fellows. ITLS‐Sydney welcomed Professor Michiel Bliemer as the Foundation Chair in Transport and Logistics Network Modelling, Professor Michael Bell as the Foundation Chair in Ports and Maritime Logistics, and Dr Rico Merkert as Senior Lecturer in Aviation Management. Mark Raadsen joined as a Senior Research Analyst, Wen Liu as a Research Analyst and Jenny Vicic joined the professional staff support team. On completing their doctorates ITLS‐Sydney’s Dr Matthew Beck, Dr Andrew Collins, Claudine Moutou and Chi‐hong (Patrick) Tsai became members of our academic and research staff in 2012.

I am extremely proud that in the Australian Research Council’s 2012 Excellence in Research for Australia Initiative both institutes were awarded the highest rating of 5 – above world standard – in their respective research areas, civil engineering – ITS‐Monash, transport and freight services – ITLS‐Sydney. Underlining this achievement is the award of five highly competitive Australian Research Council grants to the Key Centre in 2012, two Discovery Projects and three Linkage Projects.

Key centre staff continue to be recognised for the contributions they make to industry and government sector activities and their active engagement with the broader community through events such as ITS‐Monash’s Research Roadshow and ITLS‐Sydney’s Research and Policy Breakfast Workshop and through their contributions to the print and broadcast media.

After 21 years, ITLS‐Sydney has been relocated from Burren Street in Newtown to the Central Business District of Sydney at the St James Campus. This move has been welcomed by our staff, visitors and alumni who see it as recognition of our growing engagement with government and industry in the ‘big end of town’.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the commitment and dedication of Adjunct Professor John Stanley and Dr Alastair Stone in chairing our Boards of Advice. These Boards continue to provide important advice and direction to the Key Centre. Our success is also, in no small measure, due to the extraordinary support we enjoy from Professor Edwina Cornish (Deputy Vice‐Chancellor (Research), Monash University) and Professor Tyrone Carline (Acting Dean, University of Sydney Business School). It continues to be my very great pleasure to serve as the Director of the Key Centre. The working environment brings a great deal of joy to me, overwhelmingly due to the team we have. HIGHLIGHTS

KEY CENTRE AWARDED HIGHEST RATING

– WELL ABOVE WORLD STANDARD – IN ARCʹS EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH FOR AUSTRALIA INITIATIVE

The rating of 5 well above world standard achieved by both institutes is a significant recognition of the excellent quality of the research produced by the Key Centre. ITS‐Monash was classified in civil engineering and is one of only two civil engineering departments in Australia to receive this rating. ITLS‐Sydney was the only unit in Australia to be awarded the highest rating for research in transportation and freight services. Less than one fifth of units evaluated nationally achieved the highest rating. The evaluation is undertaken by research evaluation committees comprised of distinguished and internationally recognised researchers from Australia and overseas. Their evaluation is informed by four indicators: i) research quality (publishing profile, citation analysis, ERA peer review); ii) research volume and activity (total research outputs, research income, other research items); iii) research application (research commercialisation income, other applied measures); and iv) recognition, based on a range of esteem measures.

An indicator of the high level of research success at the Key Centre is its continued record in winning highly competitive ARC grants. The Key Centre now holds four ARC Discovery Projects, two of which commenced in 2012 – Travel time budget analysis from multi‐day and multi‐year data Professor Peter Stopher; and Valuation of service reliability and crowding under risk and uncertainty: neglected drivers of demand for public transport Professor David Hensher and Professor John Rose – and five ARC Linkage Projects, three of which were won in 2012 – The development and application of an evaluation framework to assess transport, health and economic impacts of new urban cycling infrastructure Associate Professor Stephen Greaves; Innovative tools to improve stations design and management of crowds in emergency and panic conditions Dr Majid Sarvi, Professor Graham Currie and Dr Nirajan Shiwakoti; and Integrating mobility on demand in urban transport infrastructures Dr Russell Thompson.

PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT

Dr Majid Sarvi presents at ITS‐Monash’s inaugural Transport Research Roadshow

In 2012 the Key Centre made a substantial contribution to the public debate in transport. ITS‐Monash’s 2012 Ogden Lecture was delivered by the Secretary of the Victorian Department of Transport who explored a range of issues related to land use and transport planning. ITS‐Monash presented its inaugural Transport Research Roadshow at the Department of Transport Lecture Theatre introducing transport professionals from industry and government to its research. At ITLS‐Sydney’s Research and Policy Breakfast Workshop academics discussed with NSW policy makers how to improve mechanisms for the transfer of research findings into public transport policy. The latest policy developments were presented to an audience from academia, government and industry in the ITLS‐Sydney Leadership and Policy Seminar Series; speakers included Greg Martin, Chair of the National Transport Commission, and two Deputy Director Generals of Transport for NSW – Carolyn McNally and Rachel Johnson. In 2012, both institutes initiated LinkedIn sites to inform industry of their activities; ITS‐Monash now has over 895 group members (the largest such site of any transport research centre) and ITLS‐Sydney has 268 members.

BUILDING LINKS WITH CHINA

2012 saw both Institutes building significant links into China with quality partnerships established with two leading Chinese universities. One anticipated outcome of these partnerships is an expansion of the Key Centre’s networks into the broader market of business activity in China. ITS‐Monash embarked on a combined Masters of Transportation Systems with South Eastern University in China. The program commences in 2013 and will be led by Dr Russell Thompson, who will be assisted by Dr Terry Liu. ITLS‐Sydney exported its retail and reverse logistics expertise to Shanghaiʹs Jiao Tong University delivering specialist logistics courses as part of the Modern Logistics and Supply Chain Management EMBA Study Course.

ITLS‐SYDNEY CELEBRATES 21 YEARS OF ACHIEVEMENT

On 30 June 2012, ITLS‐Sydney celebrated 21 years of achievement at a gala dinner at The Refectory (Holme Building, The University of Sydney) with friends from around the world, including past and present colleagues and collaborators from academia, government and industry, and our students and alumni. There were memorable speeches from honoured guests including the NSW Minister of Transport, The Honourable Gladys Berejiklian MP, and a short video was premiered presenting ITLS‐Sydney’s excellence in teaching and research, our international reputation, our engagement with government and industry, and the achievements of our alumni. Professor David Hensher, Founding Director of ITLS‐Sydney, received an award for his outstanding contribution from Professor Stephen Garton, Provost and Deputy Vice Chancellor, and presentations were made to our outstanding students in the graduate and industry programs (see the Learning and Teaching section of this report for details).

Professor Michael Spence, Vice Chancellor and Principal of The University of Sydney, had this to say about ITLS‐Sydney’s achievement of this milestone:

“With its academic and training program as well as an extensive program of related activities including contract research to industry and government, the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies epitomises our mission. Their work informs business and industry practice, policy and regulation, both nationally and internationally.

Over the past twenty one years, ITLS has grown to be ranked amongst the world’s top five institutes in transportation and logistics research and education. It works closely with international partners from Shanghai to Santiago and from New York to London and Johannesburg.

One of the strengths of ITLS is that it achieves the delicate balance of focusing on academic objectives, while recognising the need to produce well‐rounded leaders of the future who display a diversity of management and specialist skills in transport and logistics management.

ITLS has made a significant global contribution to debate and public policy. I congratulate David Hensher and everyone who has been involved with the Institute for the past 21 years and wish them well for the future.”

VOLVO RESEARCH AND EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATIONS’ CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE ON SUSTAINABLE URBAN FREIGHT SYSTEMS

ITS‐Monash is one of six core research partners to form the Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Urban Freight Systems (CoE‐SUFS) which will be funded by the Volvo Research and Educational Foundations and hosted at The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, United States. The other partners in the Centre are: Kyoto University, Japan; Technical University of Delft, The Netherlands; Westminster University, United Kingdom; and Pennsylvania State University, United States. Transforming Urban Freight Systems (UFS) requires a global effort of research, capacity building, and institutional change, best done in collaboration with other agents of change. The goal is to jumpstart an integrative and participatory process — involving cities, private sector, and researchers — that leads to the implementation of sustainable UFS paradigms that increase quality of life, economic efficiency, and address environ‐mental justice. Such a holistic goal ensures that all key impacts are considered, as focusing on only one aspect could make things worse in the others. The fundamental quest of CoE‐SUFS is to change the course of the UFS from one driven by profit maximization to one that accounts for the externalities produced.

The Traffix Group Undergraduate scholarship is generously offered to up to two students undertaking the Bachelor of Engineering who have an interest in and intend to pursue careers in transport engineering. In 2012 the scholarships were awarded to Dimuth Gammampila who received financial assistance and a 12 week work placement with the Traffix Group. Over 40 undergraduates also undertook honour’s projects as part of the units CIV4210 Project A and CIV4211 Project B under the supervision of Alexa Delbosc, Professors William Young, Graham Currie and Geoff Rose, and Drs Nirajan Shiwakoti and Majid Sarvi.

From 2012 ITLS‐Sydney increased the number of units of study in the Master of Logistics Management and Master of Transport Management from eight to ten to allow students the opportunity to undertake a research dissertation across one or two units and/or to specialise in a particular stream; the programs offered in 2012 were:

• Masters of Logistics and Transport Management (16 units)

• Master of Logistics Management combined with the Master of Commerce (16 units) or Master of International Business (12 units)

• Graduate Diploma in Transport or Logistics Management (6 units)

In addition to the logistics and transport degrees many of our students enrolled in the Logistics and Supply Chain Management major in the Master of Commerce program or in elective units in the Master of International Business.

THE POST GRADUATION WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM

This program offers ITLS‐Sydney graduates the opportunity to gain valuable real world experience with our partners in the logistics and transport industry. More than 60% of our graduates have been offered permanent positions on completion of their placements. The success of the program lies in this win‐win situation for graduates and employers; giving employers access to some of our brightest graduates and providing our graduates with opportunities in the real business world. In 2012 the following organisations provided placements in the program: AWA Ltd, ComfortDelGro Cabcharge, Maersk, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Shipping Australia Limited and the Transport Workers Union.

The Key Centre has the highest number of enrolments in higher degrees by research in the transport and/or logistics field in Australia. In 2012, six students graduated from our doctoral programs and one from the Master of Engineering Science (Research) at ITS‐Monash, with 32 continuing enrolments across both programs. Many of our students won highly competitive scholarships from Monash or Sydney University, the Australian Research Council and from other government and industry bodies in Australia and overseas. SAFETY MANAGEMENT COURSE IN BUS AND COACH OPERATIONS

The first Transport Management Course in Bus and Coach Operations (TMC) in Victoria was launched in 1999. By the end of 2010, more than 1,900 operators had completed the course. A comprehensive review of transport legislation in Victoria led at the end of 2010 to the introduction of a new regulatory regime for bus operations in Victoria. This regime focused on safety management with a lesser emphasis on business management. ITS‐Monash was commissioned by the Safety Director of Transport Safety Victoria to design and deliver an approved training course which would equip bus operators with the necessary competencies to offer bus services that met regulatory and other compliance requirements in Victoria. The Safety Management Course for Bus Operators (SMC) was launched in 2011. In 2012 it attracted over 300 enrolments.

The SMC partially replaces the old TMC and enables operators to enter the industry and offer a range of bus services. However, unlike the old TMC, the SMC does not include a business management component that enables operators to undertake contractual services. To address this problem, a new TMC was designed and launched at the beginning of 2012. This program is an essential component of any service bid by a bus company in Victoria. The new TMC incorporates the SMC as well as a robust business management component and caters for those operators seeking entry to contractual services and/or professional development training. Companies who have completed the old TMC do not have to undertake the new TMC so new entrants to the industry are the target market.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT PLANNING I AND II – NETWORK AND STRATEGIC PERSPECTIVES

Both industry short courses in public transport planning (I and II) were run in Brisbane in November. Participants come from a variety of professional backgrounds, including public transport operators and state government agencies from throughout Australia and overseas. The course was presented by Professor Graham Currie and Professor Avi Ceder from the University of Auckland. Topics covered include strategic perspectives on planning public transport, performance monitoring and network design, operational perspectives, transit marketing and fare structures.

BUS AND COACH OPERATOR ACCREDITATION SCHEME

The Bus and Coach Operator Accreditation Scheme Online Training Course (BOAS) attracted 201 enrolments in 2012, making a total of 978 enrolments since the online course was introduced in 2007 to replace the accreditation requirements under the Certificate of Coach Management. The BOAS online course is approved by Transport for NSW as meeting the accreditation requirement of competency to operate bus and coach services. Under the Passenger Transport Act (1990), operators of bus and coach services must be accredited by the Director General of Transport. One of the accreditation requirements is that applicants must be competent to operate a bus service. To meet the requirement of being competent applicants must pass the BOAS examination. The BOAS course includes four modules: i) Accreditation; ii) Management Information System; iii) Vehicle Maintenance Management System; and iv) Safety Management Systems. The BOAS course is delivered through online learning materials including notes, case studies, online quizzes, and a discussion board.

CERTIFICATE OF TRANSPORT MANAGEMENT

Enrolments on the Certificate of Transport Management (CTM) grew further in 2012 following the re‐design of the course in 2010 as a face‐to‐face professional development program, no longer providing accreditation. In 2012, 39 participants from the bus industry and their suppliers (NSW and interstate) and government successfully completed the course with a further 11

participants attending the newly introduced CTM refresher program. The CTM provides knowledge and skills in management, planning and policy areas central to the success of the bus and coach industry, to operators, suppliers and consultants. It introduces participants to the latest developments in the industry and is recognised as an important industry qualification for middle and senior management, and an excellent opportunity for career development. The four day program includes presentations by industry representatives, specialist consultants and academic experts, designed to develop practical skills for the industry, as well as interactive exercises. The networking benefits are an important aspect of the CTM. The course content is reinforced by four assignments completed after the course. The CTM is supported by Transport for NSW, the State Transit Authority, BusNSW and private operators.

DISCRETE CHOICE ANALYSIS AND CHOICE EXPERIMENT DESIGN

Course text: Applied Choice Analysis: A Primer (2005) by Professor David Hensher, Dr John Rose and Professor William Greene, published by Cambridge University Press

Almost without exception, everything human beings undertake involves a choice. In recent years there has been a growing interest in the development and application of quantitative statistical methods to study choices made by individuals or groups with the purpose of gaining a better understanding both of how choices are made and of forecasting future choice responses. These extremely successful courses provide an unintimidating introduction to the main techniques of choice analysis and the design of choice experiments. The courses, which began in 2006, are presented by world experts in the field: Professors David Hensher, John Rose and Michiel Bliemer. The week long courses held in January / February 2012 attracted participants from all over the world from as far afield as New Zealand, South Africa and The Netherlands. Abridged versions of these courses have also been presented in Italy (2008, 2009 and 2010), Portugal (2009), Singapore (2007), South Africa (2008) and The Netherlands (2007).

In 2012 ITLS‐Sydney established an agreement with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, one of China’s leading universities, to deliver specialist logistics courses into their Modern Logistics and Supply Chain Management EMBA Study Course. The first courses in Reverse Logistics (delivered by Alan Win) and Retail Logistics (delivered by Gareth Jude) were delivered, respectively, in May and August 2012. These subject areas are involved with the efficient manufacture and distribution of products, as well as the disposal of products at the end of their life. The courses are very strong on international product and service distribution and providing an appreciation of what the global market is doing. There was an overwhelmingly positive response to these courses which will be repeated in 2013; future courses are proposed in aviation and maritime logistics.

Gareth Jude commented that he had enjoyed the challenge of adapting his material for the local context and pacing the delivery to simultaneous translations in Mandarin: “Teaching a condensed three day course to a group of 30+ Chinese business owners and ʹCʹ level executives over a weekend in the height of Shanghai summer through an interpreter was always going to be a challenge. However with great support from SJTU and the active collaboration of the students we had a very productive and enjoyable weekend. The students were particularly engaged by practical case material and gave the course glowing feedback. I look forward to returning next year.”

The ITS‐Monash Ogden Transport Lecture is a free public lecture initiated in 2001 to recognise the key role which Ken Ogden played in the formation and development of the transport program at Monash University.

The 2012 Ogden Transport Lecture was delivered on 16 August by Jim Betts, Secretary of the Victorian Department of Transport. The lecture explored a range of issues relating to transport and land use planning by considering a range of propositions which Jim then defended. The combination of the content, and the very informal presentation style, clearly engaged the audience and produced an insightful question and answer segment following the lecture.

TRANSPORT RESEARCH ROADSHOW

The inaugural Transport Research Roadshow was held at Public Transport Victoria on the 24 August 2012. The aim of the roadshow is to keep those responsible for the planning and management of transport in Victoria up to date with Monash transport research. The event was hosted at the Department of Transport Theatre and opened by The Honourable Edward O’Donohue MLC, the Victorian Parliamentary Secretary for Transport.

RESEARCH AND POLICY BREAKFAST WORKSHOP

A Research and Policy Breakfast Workshop on 23 November 2012, organised by Professor Corinne Mulley, gathered together high‐level stakeholders central to the research and policy environments to explore the barriers in NSW that inhibit the transfer of research findings into public transport policy. Professor Brian Collins, formerly the Chief Scientific Advisor to the Department of Transport United Kingdom, Carolyn McNally, Deputy Director for Transport for NSW and responsible for the production of integrated transport plans in NSW, including the NSW Long Term Transport Master Plan and Professor Corinne Mulley, Chair of Public Transport at the University of Sydney presented to the breakfast participants and this was followed by discussion to identify barriers and solutions to better provide an evidence base to policy formulation. The development of a public transport network and the encouragement for Transport for NSW to identify a strategic research agenda are two outcomes which are in progress.

Associate Professor Greaves spoke to the Sydney Morning Herald about his research into financial rewards for driving less and driving more carefully and Crikey ran a profile on his research (with Professor John Pucher, Rutgers University, United States and Jan Garrard, Deakin University) which looked at the reasons that Melburnians cycle twice as much as Sydneysiders. Meanwhile, from Melbourne, Dr Marilyn Johnson wrote a piece for The Conversation and spoke to ABC Far North Queensland on ITS‐Monash’s study on what influences people to buy an electric bike and what their experiences have been using them and Professor Geoff Rose published an editorial piece in The Age and was quoted in a New York Times article regarding the same study. Professor Graham Currie spoke to the Financial Review and By Design on ABC Radio National on his research on the decline of car use among young people.

Road pricing was a hot topic in 2012 with Professor David Hensher interviewed for, and quoted in, numerous articles on ‘time of day’ tolls for Australia’s roads (Sydney Morning Herald, Australian Financial Review, The Australian, The Age, MX (Sydney), Perth Now – The Sunday Times, Australasian Bus and Coach Magazine) following the publication of his research (with Professor John Rose and Dr Andrew Collins) which indicated that 80% of Sydneysiders would support new measures to charge motorists for driving into or across the city, and the subsequent calls from the ACCC for road congestion pricing. Professor Hensher also discussed this topic in interviews on Channel 9 and Channel 7 TV News, Radio Triple J and Radio 2UE and in a live Twitter debate, as well as publishing an article in The Conversation. Dr Zheng Li was interviewed by the Australian Financial Review on this topic and Professor John Rose appeared on ABC News 24 and ABC News Breakfast discussing road user charging.

BUS RAPID TRANSIT

Busways / Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) / Dedicated Corridor Transit received some spotlight from the media in 2012. Professor Currie spoke to The Age about bus lanes in Melbourne. Professor Hensher discussed high visibility and high frequency bus routes in the future urban planning for Sydney with the Daily Telegraph, Sydney Morning Herald and the Brisbane Times, talked to the Sydney Morning Herald about the NSW Government’s BRT pre‐feasibility study, and discussed busways for Brisbane with ABC Radio Brisbane and the Brisbane Times.

TOPS Index of Transport Confidence

As the ITLS‐Sydney’s biannual Transport Opinion Survey (TOPS) indicated a decrease in public confidence in the future of transport in Australia, the results from the survey received widespread coverage in the print media and was the subject of a number of interviews with ITLS‐Sydney Director, Professor Hensher, broadcast on radio and television. A key finding of the March survey, that more than half of Australians believe that taxi services in their local areas are deteriorating, was reported in regional newspapers across Australia including the MX (Sydney and Melbourne), Illawarra Mercury, The Courier Mail (Queensland), Maitland Mercury, Newcastle Herald, Northern Territory News, Adelaide Now and Perth Now, as well as receiving

national coverage in the AAP Newswire, Australian Financial Review, Herald Sun, The Australian and The Daily Telegraph and Professor Hensher was interviewed on several radio stations (ABC Illawarra (Wollongong), 4WK (Toowoomba), 2SM (Sydney), 2GB (Sydney), and 2UE (Sydney) and appeared on Channel 7 and Channel 9 TV News. The September survey found that nearly half of the nation’s train travellers complain that the level of crowding on local train services at peak times is intolerable. This was the topic of articles in The Age, Sydney Morning Herald, news.com.au, MX (Sydney), Geelong Advertiser, and Australasian Bus and Coach as well as being the focus of an interview with Professor Hensher on Channel 9 TV News.

IN OTHER TRANSPORT NEWS

As Professor Currie was interviewed on Radio 3AW on the opportunities for monorail in Melbourne, Professors Hensher and Mulley spoke to journalists about plans to dismantle Sydney’s monorail (ABC Radio National and Popular Science Magazine). Our academics were called on to comment on a number of other high profile issues in rail transport – high speed rail (Professor Hensher, The Goulburn Post; Dr Geoffrey Clifton, The Canberra Times; Professor John Rose, ABC Radio National); changes to the Sydney CityRail network (Dr Clifton, Radio 2GB), and Sydney’s proposed northwest rail link (Professor Hensher, Sydney Morning Herald, The Telegraph and Hills News) – and air transport – airline mergers (Dr Rico Merkert, Australian Aviation Magazine, The Australian, Routes News Magazine, United Kingdom); and a second airport for Sydney (Dr Merkert, The Australian; Associate Professor Greaves, Illawarra Mercury). With the London Olympics in 2012 there was discussion of the success of Sydney’s management of public transport during its Olympics; Professor Hensher was interviewed on Radio 2UE and published an article in The Conversation on this topic.

Professor Hensher contributed monthly op‐ed pieces for the Australasian Bus and Coach on topics ranging from road pricing

reform and the work of Infrastructure NSW, through overcrowding on metropolitan trains, comparing the cost efficiency of bus and train, and avoiding peak hour travel, to bus contracting, effective performance measures and new ways to describe bus rapid transit (dedicated corridor transit).
