PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Grandparents Day We had an overwhelming response to Grandparents Day last week, with over 100 visitors to our school. It was wonderful to see the happy faces of the students and the very proud faces of the grandparents. I was really touched by the positive comments we received and we will definitely take on board the feedback of allowing for more time in classrooms next year. Thank you so much to eve-ryone who came. Kindergarten Transition

Yesterday was the second visit from our 2017 Kindergarten students. They are getting to know us and each other so they can be ready to start 'big school' next year. So far Kindergarten teachers have been impressed by the pre-schoolers’ readiness for school. We have 2 more visits to go. Good News I have recently received the very welcome news that we will be receiving a set of flashing school zone lights at the crossing on Tenth Avenue. Hopefully this will increase the visibility and safety of the 'children's crossing' outside of the back gate. Congratulations to Mrs McPherson who last week received a Macarthur Network Award for her out-standingly positive impact as an executive at Austral Public School. This is quite an achievement and very well deserved. We are extremely proud of her! Remembrance Day

The 11th November is Remembrance Day, at 11 o’clock we share a minutes silence and stop to re-member fallen soldiers from all wars. It is the anniversary of the date that soldiers put down their weapons in World War 1, so that a peace settlement could be secured. Austral Public School values this occasion and has a strong tradition of sharing these services with our community. This year our school captains have been asked to represent us at Remembrance Day Services at Forest Lawn Memorial Park and Tobruk Retirement Village, where they will read poems and show their respect. This is an honour and a privilege and I know our captains, Alexia and Alexander will make us proud

once again.

AUSSIE OF THE MONTH Luke Siena GOLD CHANCE CARD DRAW

Congratulations to Laycee from KG who was the winner of the Gold Chance draw at our last whole school assembly on Wednesday 2nd November. Laycee was rewarded with a double pass to the movies which we hope he will enjoy. Many thanks to the P+C for providing the movie passes. Next month students will be receiving gold chance cards for sharing. Think about why shar-ing is important, and how this affects others. Teachers will be looking out for students who can share in the classroom and playground, and can help others to share nicely in games. Mrs Elena Rysko

Focus on Reading

Focus on Reading is an initiative that all years 3 – 6 teachers, our Italian teachers, support staff and librarian have been involved with since April this year. There have been many hours of professional learning invested both in and outside of the classroom. This has come about as a recognised need to raise our student’s comprehension levels in Years 3 – 6. We have seen very pleasing results so far. One key aspect of the initiative is giving students strategies that help them understand anything they read. These strategies are more commonly referred to by students as the “Super 6”. It was heartwarming to last week see 2 of our students prepare their very own posters explaining how they use the “Super 6” to help them understand what they are reading. Congratulations to Talia Fenato from 5/6A and Alessia Zannino from 3/4G for these wonderful posters. We will include a regular Focus on Reading section in our school newsletter, as this is an initiative that will continue into next year, to keep you informed. Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Ms Rogers or Mrs McPherson.

ting, problem and resolution together with specific language features to entertain

an audience through a narrative.

Free From Warts, Croaks And Toads

The sun bounced off the bright-green grass. All was still until a small ripple

fluttered through the grass followed by great big thumps.

Shania darted through the grass going left, right, up, down and through the log;

she glanced over her shoulder and saw a massive toad close behind her. Just a

little further, she thought, just as the toad made one more colossal leap. Shania

zoomed across the brown, shrivelled mushrooms and the toad halted. Shania

turned around and poked her tongue out; the toad squinted his bright, emerald

green eyes and chewed on his intimidating leg shaped pipe.

As Shania flew home from her exercise she noticed many mournful faces, she

wondered why; there was no rain, no winter and no giant beings on the loose but

as she got deeper into the majestic tree the more sad faces she saw. After eating a

mediocre dinner Shania was called to the queen. Before saying ‘Hello’ or ‘How

are you’ the queen said, “Your grandfather is dead. He told us to take care of you,

and he also left you this.” As the queen told Shania this, her face fell and her eyes

began to crystallise. When Shania got given the sword she noticed how beautiful-

ly polished it was and how the rubies were perfectly encrusted into it. Shania

bowed to the queen and then shot out like a bullet. She knew what she had to do

next.

After months of preparation Shania went out in the dead of the night to slaughter

the toad. As she walked along the stone path she imagined how happy the villages

would be to find out she had conquered the toad! As daylight approached Shania

stood boldly in the mouth of the toads cave. She peered inside. But the old, wrin-

kly toad was nowhere to be seen. All of a sudden Shania felt a warm breath on her

back; she slowly turned around and was face to face with the toad. Acting fast

Shania unsheathed her sword and stabbed the toad right in the chest; aqua blue

blood spurted out everywhere and narrowly missed her cheek, but the toad was

not dead yet. Shania soared under a boulder and waited for the toad. After a few

minutes of waiting and watching the toad’s foot appeared in a crack and Shania

flew out. She held her sword high above her head and pieced the blade into the

toad’s head and more blood departed from his body. The toad let out a final croak

and then thudded onto the ground.

Shania felt victorious and returned home and became the queen for defeating the

toad. The people rejoiced and now the whole kingdom is free from warts, croaks

and toads.

The Toad

Inside a lightless cave lies a stubborn wrinkled toad with slime that’s stickier than

super glue. The body length of the ugly toad was outstanding - roughly the size of a

school bus.

Although people who live in the village fear the massive beast, some still go face to

face with the four- tonne beast. But none ever come back. This is the story of Trent

and the beast.

Trent was no ordinary warrior; he was a fearless but stupid fighter. He had black long

hair that would flow back when riding a horse. So Trent set out to stop the croaking of

the wrinkled old beast.

As Trent is trying to stay quiet in the in the wet whiteless terrain, his legs tremble

through the forest but they still continue to move until a sharp sudden snap.

A tree had lost its balance and dived down at Trent. Trent leapt for his life, and the tree

trunk missed his body but a sharp branch had made its way through Trent’s leg.

The loud snap of the huge tree had echoed its way to the toad’s cave. The toads eyes

opened and then the ground started to rumble as the toad came charging toward Trent.

Trent’s ears spotted the loud rumble of the toad, so he whipped out his cat of nine tails

to fend off the toad. The beast narrows its eyes at the object he would call food.

Trent’s face turns into an angry wolf, yelling at the croaking toad.

The toad danced around Trent as if he had won the battle. Trent was confused by what

was going on. The toad jumped up, landing two meters away from Trent. The toad

sprung its tongue bashing Trent’s hand and flinging the sword away from him.

The toad kicked the tree off Trent like a donkey, and then dropped its jaw to the

ground slinging its tongue and latching Trent right into its mouth.

The Crystal Necklace

As the sun shone, the castle was lit up. Alessia was sitting next to her

favourite tree in the forest listening to music on her IPhone. She was all

alone. Alessia heard footsteps coming near her. She got scared. Alessia

hunched her shoulders and she started to shiver. An evil toad jumped

out and stole her crystal necklace which dangled from her neck.

As the toad got her crystal necklace Alessia screamed, “Help!” but no-

one heard her. So she tried to find the toad. A handsome man appeared

named Michael. He was a tall man with broad shoulders. Alessia said in

a low voice, “Can you please help me find my necklace?” Michael

replied, “Yes”.

So they went all day to find that missing crystal necklace. Eventually

they stopped at a big, dark cave. The toad appeared from inside the

cave. They tried to get passed him but stood in front on the entrance.

Alessia was so angry she squinted her eyes and her face started to get

very red. Alessia told Michael to get his sword out. So he did. Alessia

ran inside the cave and tried to find her crystal necklace. As Alessia

found her necklace she quickly got out but left Michael there. When she

left the big, dark cave Alessia went back to find Michael but he was

missing. She ran away so fast that the toad started chasing her.

As Alessia got home she was so happy that she got her necklace back.

She was so happy that she was singing and her smile was as big as a

banana. Alessia skipped to her favourite tree and sat down again to

listen to her music on her IPhone.

The Rescue

As the courageous knight was awoken by the

knock of the door, he sprung out of bed to his

lovely wife. He walked down the stairs to greet

the fellow. It turned out to be the king asking

for a favour. At once he said, “Yes.” The

favour was for the knight to go to the sacred

land called Mordoor, and kill the toad that had

trapped his daughter many years ago. He im-

mediately regretted his decision. Later that

night the knight snuck out through the king-

dom. He heard a noise behind him - it was the kingdom. It came crashing down

behind him because it was over 1000 years old.

When he arrived at Mordoor he immediately spotted the enormous cave that was in

the side of a mountain. It was guarded by a giant toad. When he engaged in battle he

was swallowed whole. He still had his sword. He thought that it would be worse

inside of a frog but it turned out to be better than expected except for the goo and

remains of the meals. Then with the swing of a hand, light broke through the gap

and freedom was upon him. As he climbed through the frog he noticed a giant red

silk cushion, with a girl who had a torn dress, sitting on the cushion in the cave. He

thought it must be the king’s daughter, but then he remembered that the kingdom

had come crashing down when he was leaving.

When they got near the kingdom they saw one of the houses had survived.

Uniform Orders

Uniform orders are to be placed at the office no later than Friday morning 9.30am. Orders will be filled out on Fri-day and delivered to the child’s class. Please place correct money in envelope with their name and class

Change of Clothes

It is a good idea to put spare underpants and either grey pants for boys and royal blue pants for girls for Kindergarten and Year 1 students in their bag as the office only has a limited number of spare clothes. If your child has an accident at school and needs to be given items of clothing, please wash and return them to the of-fice.

Allergy Aware School

I would like to remind everyone that we have several students at Austral Public School who have severe allergies to cer-tain foods with many sensitive to nuts and nut products. These allergies can be life threatening! We want to support these students to feel safe and happy at school, so we encourage parents and carers not to send peanut butter, nut based products or whole nuts to school if possible please. Your support with this is greatly appreciat-ed.
