If you go anywhere, even paradise, you will miss your home.

    Malala Yousafzai

Being local is more about where we call

home and less about occupying a space.

Its knowing the back streets and the

secret princess parking spaces, meeting the

farmers who grow our strawberries face-

to-face at the u-pick, calling the owner of

the bakery down the street by name. The

tourists we give directions to dont know

if weve been here for ve or 50 years,

we have a favorite after-work drink and

a place with a view to enjoy it, we nd

chicken soup left by a neighbor on our

porch because they heard we were under

the weather. We live in neighborhoods,

not newsfeeds. We shop in person, no

free shipping required, because we like

to pick out our own clusters of oysters

    farmed that morning. Our favorite

butcher knows we like the grass-fed beef

and which cut. Were regulars at lunch

counters, farmers markets, and spin class.

We raise each others children. We dont

need neighborhood watch signs to keep

an eye out. We welcome newcomers with

southern grace and charm. Were not in

a rush, we always have time to stop for

a porch chat, and wonder how people

who go for years without meeting their

neighbors live (bless their hearts). It doesnt

even matter if youre here to stay or just

passing through, We want you to feel just

as at home here as we do.

As we were putting our first locals only issue together, interviewing

locals, writing about the things that make Charleston so uniquely

Charleston, tragedy inserted itself into the mix. We lost nine of our own

in a shooting at Mother Emanuel, but what the world discovered as this

mass murder made its way to 24/7 national news is that Charleston is

not Ferguson. It is not Baltimore. There were no riots, no marching in the

streets, and somehow the families of the victims had the strength to stand

to forgive. It all comes back to just what makes this city so wonderful: The

people who live here are strong, stand together, and love wins. It always

does. This is our home, this is our city, these are our people, and this is our

Charleston. In the pages of this issue youll meet people who have been in

this city their entire lives, people whose families go back for generations,

and people who visited some years ago and adopted Charleston as their

home. You will learn what the world can thank our city for (dont worry,

boiled peanuts in not on the list) and how we

measure ourselves as Charlestonians. It all

comes back to just what makes this city

    so wonderful: supportwe support

each other, we support local businesses,

nonprofits, and the folks who make

    living in Charleston so great.

    LOCAL SINCE

When did you start feeling like a local? Around 2005 when my rst child was born. I think it gave me some roots. Id been here for 5 years and we had a home and businesses. Its no longer another hoop to jump through.

What does being a local mean to you? I have a lot of pride in Charleston. We didnt create this place on our own, were blessed with it. I share pride for my city. Its one of the most beautiful places to live and its ourishing and growing.

Two words that describe Charleston? Absolutely beautiful.

Why do you stay? Its hard to leave once you get here. I got married and have a business here. I feel like my roots are here now.

What season do you most look forward to and why? I love October, the weather is so beautiful, theres Halloween and the Carolina Fair (my girls love both).

How have you changed this place you call home?

I think I funked up Charleston a little bit through

my stores. We bring modern and eclectic to the traditional. And I

put two wonderful daughters into this town!

The thing you love the least? The trafc. The town was not prepared for an inux of new locals! I love large cities and look forward to Charleston getting bigger.

When you travel, how do you take Charleston with you? Im denitely a Southern girl, and its obvious Im from the South. But I always nd myself excited to come homeeven when Im on vacation, it feels so good to get home.

Candelabra and its sister company, Lyndon Leigh, feature unique and modern styles in lighting, home decor and furniture. See more at ShopCandelabra.com.

  • Two words that describe Charleston? Charming and artistic.

Why do you stay? My family and friends. And Gwynns!

How have you changed Charleston? My dad always said that you should make the world a better place if you can. I try to be the best business we can be and have always given back to the community.

What season do you most look forward to and why? Spring because its no longer winter.

The question you get asked the most at parties? Whats next in fashion? I make 16 trips a year to NYC for buying. We have a buyer in each department, but I go with every one of them to NYC.

Whats next for Gwynns? Were looking forward to our 50th anniversary in 2017 at Gwynns and have some things planned in advance for that. Were remodeling the outside of the store and adding some new dressing rooms and other updates.

Have you ever helped a tourist out? Ive taken tourists back to hotels before and were always making recommendations on where to eat and visit. Personal service is important.

What does being a local mean to you? People do consider me a local, but I wasnt born here. Charleston

is my home and where my family is. When I travel, I tell people Im from Charleston.

The thing you love the most about Charleston? There are so many things. The people and the salt air and the architecture, the gardens, the seasons, the water and the beach. I wish there was just one thing I could name.

The thing you love the least? That Mayor Joe Riley is retiring.

Established in 1967, Gwynns is the only locally

owned luxury department store in Charleston offering

mens and womens designer clothing and accessories; shoes; cosmetics and skincare; upscale gifts and home accessories. More info at Gwynns.com.

Two words that describe Charleston? Holy City.

Why do you stay? My heart is here. I feel more comfortable here than anywhere else on earth.

How have you changed Charleston? Candidly, I dont think I have. Ive had the privilege of living here and its my home.

How has Charleston changed you? Charleston has a soul, its a way of living, when you drive in on I-26, about the time you hit Summerville, your whole outlook changes. It completes me.

What season do you most look forward to? Spring and fall, just because of the perfect weather. Everyone is out and about; its the most beautiful place on the planet.

The question you get asked the most at parties? Is that your real hair? and I say, Is it on straight? Also what car I like best and what Im driving right now. I love them all, theyre like my children. Im currently driving a Mercedes, but last month I was driving a Rolls Royce and the month before I was driving a Cadillac Escalade.

The one place we shouldnt miss when visiting Charleston? Baker Motor Company (laughs). I think a harbor cruise because you can see the vistas of Charleston.

When did you start feeling like a local? I was born here. Charleston has always been home.

What does being a local mean to you? I have a lot of pride in my heritage, in my hometown, in the people. You have to give back to the community. You can never give too much back and if you want to be successful, you must do it. Charleston will give you everything you ever wanted, but you have to give back.

When you go out of town, how do you take Charleston with you? I am the ambassador! Some call me the ofcial Charleston greeter. I get a chance to tell everyone that all roads lead to Charleston, South Carolina.

Baker Motor Company has been a Charleston institution since it opened its doors over 25 years ago with its agship Mercedes-Benz dealership. More at BakerMotorCompany.com.

  • Two words that describe Charleston? Dynamic and friendly.

How have you changed Charleston? Through SEWE, we have introduced a lot of artists to the community. You can go to galleries downtown and see artists who were discovered during the expo and are now showing their work locally throughout the year.

The question you get asked the most at parties? When I go to functions out of state they always ask me how SEWE became so successful. The answer is Charleston itself. We could never have grown and event like this without a host city like Charleston.

The one place we shouldnt miss when visiting Charleston? A good carriage tour. Ive been on them myself and theyre entertaining and informative. Visit Upper King Street, its vibrant and local and exciting. Lots of shops and new businesses. Im not a beach person, so I rarely recommend the beach but I do tell people to visit the plantations to see what the old South was like.

What season do you most look forward to and why? I love the fall because I like the cooler weather and it marks the beginning of outdoor activities. Im a stay out of the heat kind of person.

What does being a local mean to you? Local is where you consider your roots are, where your friends and activities are, where you want to spend the rest of your life. That place is Charleston to me.

The thing you love the most about Charleston? The people, how accepting they are of visitors.

The thing you love the least? The inadequate trafc ow downtown.

When you go out of town, how do you take Charleston with you? I think its more of a mindset. Youre always comparing other cities to Charleston.

The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE) is a 3-day celebration of wild-life and nature through ne art, conservation education, sporting demonstrations, food, and drink. It brings more than 40,000 visitors to Charleston every year. More info at SEWE.com.

What does being a local mean to you? Its experiencing the environment and engaging with it. I get out on the water, I sh, I walk on the piers. I also have a responsibility as a business owner to participate in my community and organizations here in Charleston. My family is here, my roots are becoming stronger here as they start to develop their families here. Being an entrepreneur of a small business in a small city has rounded out that sense of being local.

The thing you love the most about Charleston? Theres a peacefulness that I dont feel anywhere else.

The thing you love the least? I wish there was more open-mindedness. I think the world is bigger than what Charleston sometimes understands it to be. Trying new things, even in transportation. I would like to see more expanding our awareness of how to maintain our small city feel as the city continues grows.

When you go out of town, how do you take Charleston with you? I have a tendency to brag about Charleston. When I go to NYC, Paris, anywhere on buying trips I love to talk about Charleston.

Bits of Lace is well-known to most women who grew up in Charleston (some of us even remember our rst bra ttings there) and it continues to ourish as a ne lingerie boutique at 302 King Street. Its second location at 453 W. Coleman Blvd. opened last year to accommodate Mount Pleasant customers. More info at BitsofLace.com.

Two words that describe Charleston? Southern hospitality.

Why do you stay? The minute I moved to Charleston, I fell in love with the weather and the beauty and the clean environment. I love the cultural diversity and progressive mindset.

How have you changed Charleston? I brought something that is hard to nd: Unique, high quality product that is specically supported by and made for women. We want to be a price conscious company and not be too exclusive, but to maintain highest quality of exclusive lines and personal service. We are involved in our community through various charities as well. I love when tourists come in and nd us and become our customers online!

How has Charleston changed you? I have learned how to step back and let go of doing everything myself. Being a business owner, Ive learned to hire collaborative people who also have an entrepreneurial spirit and theres a lot of that in Charleston.

What season do you most look forward to and why? I love the spring when the azaleas bloom and love to see the spring colors come out.

The one place we shouldnt miss when visiting Charleston? Walk the streets and explore the peninsula on foot. You can see things when you walk around that you dont see from a car. Its a very walkable city! Its small enough to walk the perimeter in a day.

  • Two words that describe Charleston? Pancake. Flat.

How have you changed Charleston? I havent but the work of my organization, Charleston Moves, has. We have elevated the conversation about the importance of being able to walk and ride a bike for transportation to more than just a recreational amenity, to its rightful place as a vital component of a livable, lovable city. Weve convinced decision makers that the Share The Road-sign-and-a-prayer method doesnt magically transform a street into a safe, enjoyable place to walk or ride a bicycle.

How has Charleston changed you? I complain about heat and humidity a lot less than I used to.

What season do you most look forward to? Fall. Its a reprieve from the heat, offers crisp mornings ideal for running and riding a bicycle, and the farmers market is bountiful!

The question you get asked the most at parties. Its a tie between, Do you miss New York/do you like Charleston? and Do you even own a car?

What does being a local mean to you? It means supporting independent businesses, local farmers (CSA), and Charleston artists with my wallet. It also means getting around strictly by walking or riding my bicycle.

The thing you love the most about Charleston? Its a top 10 list in no particular order: Hampton Park, CHS County Public Library, The Halsey Institute, Pure Theater, Indaco, Edmunds Oast, Moes Crosstown Tavern, Park Cafe, Worn (Mens Consignment shop), and dirt cheap direct ights to JFK.

The thing you love the least? Legal right turn on red (on the peninsula) and its suburban sprawl and chain stores.

KURTS TOP TEN LIST FOR SANE STREETS

1.) The immediate installation of the Legare Bridge Bike & Pedestrian Lane.

2.) Adoption and immediate implementation of pilot projects and Phase I of the City of Charlestons Downtown Bike Plan.

3.) Barnes Dance at select heavy pedestrian locations (CofC, MUSC, Market Street, etc.), to quote Gabe Klein: or modied all-red signal pattern. This would allow pedestrians to cross in all directions including diagonally and ush the intersection so that cars dont conict as much. Eliminating right on red at these intersections would also make them more pedestrian friendly.

4.) Yield/Stop for Pedestrians in-street signage at uncontrolled intersections such as those on King Street and mid-block crossings. Without these markers, people driving assume the right-of-way.

5.) Lead Pedestrian Intervals (LPI) at wide and/or pedestrian-heavy intersectionsagain, to quote Gabe Klein: A 3-5 second lead for the pedestrians on the trafc light indicator is helpful particularly for older and very young pedestrians.

6.) Continuous bike lane, buffered or protected, from the foot of the Ravenel Bridge to the Ben Sawyer Multi-use Path on Coleman Boulevard in Mount Pleasant, including over Shem Creek. This is a major segment of the Battery2Beach route (more info at Battery2beach.com).

7.) Buffered or protected bike lanes on streets with posted speed limits above 35MPH. With higher vehicular speeds, more distance and protection must be created to create a more comfortable, safe, enjoyable experience. We hear, time and again, No one uses the bike lane on 61. No kidding. It does not connect to another facility, such as the West Ashley Greenway, and its a painted bike lane next to 55MPH vehicular trafc. Good bicycle facility design leads to more people on bikes because its a more comfortable, enjoyable ride.

8.) 20MPH speed limit in our urban core and residential neighborhoods (and near schools, parks, playgrounds, rec centers, places of worship, etc.).

9.) End the bicycle conscation policy on King Street. Bicycles can be conscated by CPD if theyre locked to anything other than a city bike rack between Spring Street and Market Street. The bikes are taken to CPD HQ on Lockwood Boulevard and those retrieving their bicycle must pay a $45 fee. Many assume their bike has been stolen and there is no warning prior to conscation. In contrast, the cost of a ticket for texting while driving (distracted driving!) is $25.

10.) Two Stage Left Turn Box at the intersection of Coleman Blvd and Magrath Darby Boulevard (the hard part, No Right on Red, is already in place!). This offers people biking safe access to the States best bike/pedestrian facility, Wonders Way on the Ravenel Bridge.

  • Two words that describe Charleston? Sophisticated and casual.

Why do you stay? This is home, my family is here, my church family is here, my friends are here. I believe there is work I am meant to do here in serving the community where I was raised.

How have you changed Charleston? We are fortunate to be able to provide opportunities for professional development for young business leaders and making sure they know what resources are available here for them.

How has Charleston changed you? I see the side of Charleston that doesnt make it onto postcards or magazine covers. I am proud of the change in our city and I come from people who helped shape what this city is. Im learning that theres more to life than just being in a city, there is a process of giving back to the community.

What season do you most look forward to and why? I love the fall. Its beautiful, I love the weather, the tourists are mostly gone and its just gorgeousnot too cold or too hotpeople tend to start new projects in the fall. Something about it feels like a fresh start.

The question you get asked the most at parties? Where to go for the best soul food! I always send them to Nigels Good Food. Started by Nigel and his wife Louise, its good home-style soul food in North Charleston.

What does being a local mean to you? You do more than just live here. Living here is a perk, but its what you do while you live here that really shows who you are giving back to the community, starting businesses. There are people all over this city starting small businesses that are ourishing and Im helping them by supporting their efforts.

The thing you love the most about Charleston? The opportunities. Growing up, I lived in a 10 mile radius so I was oblivious to what was outside of that. But after college, coming back, Ive really seen the support here that helps people follow their dreams. Thats the real beauty of this city. You can blaze your own trail and be successful.

The thing you love the least? The perception that there are no economic opportunities here. There are people who are born and raised right here in Charleston but have never explored the history of our city. One thing I strive to work toward is showing people the opportunities available here.

  • Two words that describe Charleston? Beautiful and humid.

Why do you stay? My family and my home. Charleston has been my home since I was a teenager (I graduated from Moultrie High School), and my business is based here.

How have you changed Charleston? By opening ve locally owned retail businesses, providing jobs, fashion and fabulousness.

How has Charleston changed you? My father was in the Army and we moved every 2 or 3 years. I always wanted to belong to a place and have roots. I never felt like I belonged anywhere until I moved to Mount Pleasant in the summer before my senior year in high school and I felt like I nally found my place to call home.

What season do you most look forward to and why? Spring because the weather is beautiful, lots of events going on, and spring clothes are the most fun to buy because theyre so colorful.

Have you ever helped a tourist out? I have helped lots of tourists out. Delivered clothes to hotels, made reservations at some special restaurants they couldnt get into.

What does being a local mean to you? It means that I am part of a community and I do whatever I can to make our city the best in the world. It means a lot because my businesses are here and my children were raised hereI have three grown sons and now three grandchildren (two grandsons and one granddaughter).

The thing you love the most about Charleston? The history and how close we are to the beaches. I love to go to the beach, I dont get to go as often as Id like because I work so much, but we try to rent a beach house in the summer.

The thing you love the least? The humidity and heat.

When you travel, how do you take Charleston with you? Knowing in my heart that Im coming home. Coming home is the best feeling.

What does being a local mean to you? It used to mean you had to be born in Charleston, but I have many friends who are locals and they werent born here. I think its being active in the community.

The thing you love the most about Charleston? I love the traditions, that the core never changes. My girls are going to the same school I did, even being taught by the same teachers I was. I love that some things never change. Its steeped in tradition. And my high school friends are still my best friends.

Managing Partner, Indigo Road Restaurant Group

Two words that describe Charleston? Welcoming and wonderful.

Why do you stay? Theres no where else Id want to live. Ive had an amazing 25 year career in restaurants in Charleston.

How have you changed Charleston? Hopefully I have contributed to progressing and moving the restaurant scene forward and changed the way we think about food.

How has Charleston changed you? I think it has slowed me down in a good way. Theres an easygoing vibe about Charleston that has made me appreciate the magical moments moremy blue scooter is my happy place.

What season do you most look forward to and why? The fall. October is my favorite month to walk on the beach at Sullivans Island. And I like the fall menus in restaurants.

The question you get asked the most at parties? What its like to be in the restaurant business. Were a food obsessed culture and watch TV channels about food. It has a glamorous outside, but lots of work, lots of hours.

The one place we shouldnt miss when visiting Charleston? Charleston by water. Get out on a boat to see the city from the harbor.

When did you start feeling like a local? About 10 years into living here. I think when we opened Peninsula Grill in 1997.

What does being a local mean to you? I think caring about the community, preserving the things that we love about Charleston while also being progressive and forward thinking.

The thing you love the most about Charleston? The people.

The thing you love the least? A closed mind.

Whats next? Were doing a retail project at the Cigar Factory that opens in August. Keep an eye out for Mercantile, Mash, and The Cedar Room!

Steve formed Indigo Road in 2009 when he began working with Oak Steakhouse and went on to open O-Ku, Cocktail Club, The Macintosh, The Oak Table (Columbia, SC) and Indaco.

  • Charleston Called Me HomeAngie Mizzell

I was 28 years old when I left Charleston.

I remember that dayhoisting myself up into the drivers seat, taking a nal look at the empty house, and driving away. I recall how I gripped the steering wheel of the moving truck with my two-door hatchback in tow, and how the heavy load matched the physical and emotional weight I carried that day. With each passing mile and as the distance grew wider, I felt the separation. In the months that followed, long after Id unpacked and settled into my new life in the Pacic Northwest, the void continued to grow. At times it dared to swallow me up.

I moved away from Charleston in the days before Facebook, otherwise, I might have tried to ll the emptiness by surng my newsfeed, searching for friends snapshots of the Ravenel Bridge at sunset, or their beach chair views of the ocean with painted toenails in the foreground and crashing waves off in the distance.

I wonder if having virtual access to Charleston wouldve helped me feel more connected to what Id lost, but looking back, Im glad I got to feel the absence of Charleston in my life. The absence of Charleston woke me up to the fact that I was chasing a career path I didnt love, and that I was making choices that were leading me farther away from any sense of happiness.

It helped me realize that I always have choices, and that its okay to turn around and go back the way I came. My bright future wasnt somewhere out there. Id left Charleston, but my heart never did.

A year later, I packed up and moved back. And in the decade that has followed, Ive been in some form of transitionstarting a family, reshaping my career, discovering the real me. But all of those uncertain things are rooted in one thing, and thats the unwavering belief that Charleston is home.

Charleston is more than a place. Charleston is a feeling. Its the feeling I get when I leave James Island and drive across the Connector, admiring the peninsula on my right and the steeples rising up like beacons. Its the feeling I get when I drive over the Ravenel Bridge and my eyes fall upon the Yorktown and the marina. On clear days, I search for the lighthouse, and sometimes I can see it. Every time, I look. I look each time I drive over the Ashley River Bridge at sunset, when the water has turned a shimmery shade of blue-gray. Those bridges make me feel connected. I feel myself expand, and exhale. Im lighter when I cross.

I feel connected when my feet hit the ground, too. Especially on those perfect spring-like days when I get the chance to walk East Bay street, alongside locals and visitors alike. I feel rooted in a place that welcomes me, over and over again.

What is it about Charleston? What is that feeling? Is it the natural and man-made beauty mixed together like art? Is it the smell of the marsh and salt air? What? I think its a certain kind of magic, a magic that you have to experience to understand. Its a feeling that makes its absence known when Im steering off course. Charleston is a beacon, a lighthouse, a welcoming friend. Charleston reminds me that I can always come back. As I am, Charleston takes me in.

I had to leave Charleston to discover the thing Ive always known. No matter where I go, Ill always have a place to call home.
