THE MESSENGER The Weekly Newsletter of the Mountain Home Church of Christ July 26, 2015 FROM KEN’S PEN SHEPHERD’S CORNER….Wayne Camp How Shall the Young Secure Their Hearts? In Psalm 119, the longest chapter of the Bible, the Psalmist asks the question, “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way?” Another way of expressing this is, “How can the youth keep their ways pure?” As a young man I recall the song of Isaac Watts entitled “How Shall the Young Secure Their Hearts?” was often sung at church services. He captured, in my opinion, the answer to the question when he penned within the song the words: “How shall the young secure their hearts, and guard their lives from sin? They word the choicest rules imparts To keep the conscience clean…” The Word of God provides the best of all rules to keep one’s life pure, thereby resulting in both a better life now and the great blessings of salvation in eternity. Youth has never been an easy time in a person’s life to get through, especially today. There is a kind of “good news- bad news” aspect to it. Youth is a time of rapid change, experimentation, searching, and having fun. It is a time of ener- gy, strength, idealism, and life. Young people are at a time in their lives when they are making decisions that will affect much of the rest of their lives. Youth is the crossroads of life. God can help young people through their youth. He can help them make the right decisions. He can teach them how to truly enjoy their youth and be happy, avoiding despair. God is truly concerned about young people and has given instructions in His Word to help them. Both our youth, as well as our elderly, would profit greatly in our personal lives, if we will give time to meditate upon the following words from Psalm 119:1-6. “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way?” By taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Blessed are thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes. With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches. I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.” During my youthful years I was given a poem by a dear Christian lady who was a great influence in my life. It was writ- ten by the poet Rudyard Kipling, and simply entitled, “IF.” I wish to share certain portions of it for consideration, as it relates to this article. We are blessed with such fine and talented young people in our congregation. A special thanks to all our parents, Bible teachers and role models they have among our congrega- tion. You young people are such a blessing to us. May they always prove to be a blessing to God on their journey through life. IF— If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too: If you can wait and not be tired by waiting. Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated don’t give way to hating, If you can dream—and not make dreams your master; If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim, If you can met with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same: If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build’em up with worn-out tools; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!” If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch, If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, —you’ll be a Man, my son!

AMAZING GRACE!

“Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see.”

These words, written by John Newton (1725–1807), are so familiar as to be almost meaningless. We can sing them from memory, and often do so without considering the depths of God’s truly Amazing Grace. The author of this hymn, however, never took these words for granted, nor lost sight of their meaning.

Newton had once worked in the African slave trade, and was as far from the Word of God as one could possibly be. However, his life changed, and he gave up his ill-gotten liveli-hood and began to preach. In a devotional book titled One Year Book of Hymns, (available at www.laridian.com), the following words from his tombstone are recorded:

John Newton, clerk, once an infidel and Libertine, a servant of slavers in Africa, was, by the rich mercy of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, pre-served, restored, pardoned, and appointed to preach the faith he had so long labored to destroy.

One other saying of Newton’s is worthy of our thought, and they complement the song “Amazing Grace.” At age 82, it was suggested that he retire from preaching due to poor health and a memory that sometimes failed him when he was delivering his sermon. His re-ply was, “My memory is nearly gone, but I remember two things: that I am a great sinner, and that Christ is a great Savior!”

May we also remember those two things! Read 2 Peter 3:18 in light of these words. I be-lieve the older we get, the more meaningful these words become!

Single Sisters will meet at the home of Barb Mearing on Friday, July 31, at 6:30 for devo, salad supper and fellowship.
