What is an Atom Bomb?

Powerful explosive nuclear weapon fueled by the splitting, or fission, of the nuclei of uranium or plutonium in a chain reaction

Who Created the Atomic Bomb ?Named the Manhattan Project.

The leader of the Manhattan Project was U.S. Army Brigadier General Leslie R. Groves.

His team worked under the direction of American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer.

Development of the atomic bomb began in 1939.

A heavy nucleus is usually unstable due to many positive protons pushing apart.

First ATOM BOMB test

The first atomic explosion was conducted, as a test, at Alamogordo, New Mexico, on July 16, 1945.

The energy from the explosion was equivalent to that of 20,000 tons of TNT.

It was dropped for testing purposes only.

Maximum at 500 kilotons of TNT.

WWII brought the first use of the atomic bomb for military action.

The bomb, nicknamed “Little Boy,” was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6th, 1945.

Even though it was a smaller atomic bomb, it still managed to kill over 65,000 people, and injure almost 70,000.

The total area of destruction was one mile in diameter.

The second Atomic bomb, nicknamed “Fat Man,” dropped for military purposes during WWII.

It was dropped on August 9th, 1945, in Nagasaki, Japan.

39,000 people were killed, and 25,000 were injured.

7 feet 8 inches (2.34 m) long. Five feet (1.52 m) in diameter. Weighed 10,200 pounds (4,630 kg). Energy is equal to 22000 tons of TNT.
