• With the “discovery” of the *New World* (the Americas) in 1492, came Europeans.
• Europe began to colonize the Americas and the need for labor could not be fulfilled by the indigenous.
• Europeans began looking at Africa for labor.
• Between 1492 and 1867, a minimum of 10 million Africans were transported to the Americas.
• The majority (95%) were sent to Brazil and the Caribbean.
• About 5% of the slaves ended up in the United States.
