The ASSURE Method
A nalyze Learners
General Characteristics: There are 20 students enrolled in Ms. Wolfe’s 4th grade class. Out of the 20 students, there are 11 girls and 9 boys. In this class there are a select few of minorities, which are Muslims, Jewish and African Americans. Out of the 20 students in the class, 7 of these children fit into these minorities. There are 2 Muslims, 3 Jewish, and 2 African Americans.
Specific Entry Competencies: This class will have prior knowledge of holiday traditions, specifically Christmas. Most of the students will be aware of the traditions of Christmas in the United States celebrated by Christians. Many students know different holiday traditions based on the media. I believe the students will be very eager to learn about how different ethnicities celebrate Christmas.
Learning Styles: Auditory, Visual and Kinesthetic
S tate Objectives
My students will know and describe different religions Holiday traditions after looking at videos, posters, objects, and singing songs by then end of the week with 85% of accuracy.
S elect Methods, Media, and Materials
The most appropriate learning style for this specific lesson would be visual and auditory. We will use pictures, videos, songs, the internet, books and objects to compare and contrast the different Christmas traditions.
U tilize Media and Materials
Students will be given different songs from the different religions that deal with Christmas or another holiday. This will not only show that each ethnicity has their own different way of celebrating, it will also show the different types of languages. Another way I am going to show the differences is by using YouTube videos showing the different traditions. I will also gather many different objects and pictures from each of the different religions traditions that are important in
how they celebrate Christmas or another holiday. In class we will use computers and books to research the different religions and their Christmas traditions. I will make sure to have the songs and pictures printed, in case the media is not working during the allotted time for the lesson.
R equire Learner Participation
The way I have planned this lesson, it will be very easy for students to stay actively involved and interested. There is a lot of visual and hands on activities that will keep the students engaged. Towards the end of the allotted time for this lesson I will pair the students into groups. This will allow the students to work together with others.
E valuate and Revise
Before we begin the planned lesson, I will ask the students to tell me what they think of when I say Christmas. I will then explain to them how different religions celebrate Christmas or another holiday. To make sure 85% of my students meet the objective that I have set, I will have them prepare a group project. Each group will be given a different religion/country/ethnicity. They will have to make a poster describing the holiday traditions of that specific religion. The students will also be required to bring a visual object and have a song to either play on a speaker or sing for the class. Each student will be required to talk during the presentation. While other groups present the students will be required to listen. After each group presents the students listening will have to write down five facts about each of the group’s information that was given.
