Who was JFK? -John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born on May 29th, 1917 -SPOILER ALERT! JFK died on November 22, 1963 -He preceded by Dwight D. Eisenhower -He was the 35th President of the United States and was a Democrat -Was in office from January 3rd,1953 to December 22, 1960 -Was married to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis -Rumored to have had an affair with Marilyn Monroe -Was in the US Navy and achieved the Lieutenant rank. - Also fought in WW2

Peace Keeper -JFK represented hope and a new generation -He was young, charismatic and inspirational -Had plans to aid poverty and privation "Ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country."- JFK -Wanted to resume what America started, to revolutionize human rights

Vienna Summit -JFK and Premier Nikita Khrushchev met in Vienna, Austria to discuss their issues and their relationship between countries -Prior to the meet, Khrushchev and Kennedy both exchanged letters -Kennedy wanted to talk to Khrushchev in person to work out differences -The summit displayed his diplomatic approach to problems

JFK and Vietnam -JFK was a firm believer of containing communism. -In his first speech after becoming President, JFK made it clear he would continue to support the Diem Government in South Vietnam. -JFK decided to financially aid the South Vietnamese Army to help them expand from 150,000 to 170,000 soldiers. -He also sent 1000 American military advisors to train the South Vietnamese Army. -

Leading up to the assassination - Presidential visit to the state of Texas was agreed upon by Lyndon B. Johnson, President John F. Kennedy, and Governor John Connally JFK had three goals in mind: 1.Raise Democratic Party presidential campaign fund contributions 1.Start his journey on his reelection in November 1964 1.Since the Kennedy-Johnson ticket hardly won Texas and actually lost in Dallas, JFK wanted to smooth over relations with Texas democratic party members, that were fighting their own battles

The Assassination -Took place in Dallas, Texas at 12:30 pm on Friday November 22, 1963 -Occurred on a political trip to Texas, to smooth over frictions in the Democratic Party -He was travelling in a presidential motorcade through downtown Dallas -Was shot once in the throat and once in the head -Was taken to Parkland Hospital for emergency treatment, but was pronounced dead at 1:00 pm -Died at the age of 46, which means he died younger than any other U.S. president to date

The Warren Commision -Established by president Lyndon B. Johnson on November 29th, 1963 -To investigate the assassination of JFK -Final 889 page report was delivered to and presented publically three days later by President Johnson on September 24th, 1964. -It is was concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald was the assassin and acted alone, firing three shots -Was named after the 14th Chief of Justice, Earl Warren -Due to its low amount of hard evidence, the Warren Commision is often frowned upon and lead to the major distrust of the federal government

Lee Harvey Oswald -Under five U.S. government investigations, Lee Harvey Oswald, is believed to be the assassin that killed JFK -Shot JFK with a 6.5mm Carcano carbine -Oswald was a former U.S. Marine who defected to the Soviet Union in October 1959 -Was arrested for murder of police officer J. D. Tippit (not assassination of JFK) -Tippit was killed 45 minutes after JFK was killed -Assassinating the president wasnt actually a federal crime in 1963 so Oswald wouldve only been charged with murder.

Jack Ruby -Dallas jury found Ruby guilty of murdering Oswald, and was sentenced to death -Ruby later appeals his conviction and was granted a new trial -On the date that his new trial was being set, Ruby died from pulmonary embolism -Many Americans believed Ruby should have been lauded for his actions rather than prosecuted.

Aftermath -The immediate results in Washington arguably produced one of the most progressive eras of legislation in U.S. history next to the 1910s and 1930s. -The Kennedy assassination and the investigation (or lack thereof) produced a permanent distrust and shattered the American people's confidence in their own federal government. -Many loyalists claim that had Kennedy not been assassinated in '63, the escalation of an American military presence in the Vietnam War would not have occurred.

The Aftermath cont. - Impacted culturally and politically - Known as one of the most important events in American history - Television surpasses newspapers, the JFK assassination was the longest uninterrupted news broadcast in TV history until 9/11 attacks - The start of a general distrust of the American federal government

-Both presidents were elected to the House of Representatives in '46. -Both presidents were elected to the presidency in '60, after a series of debates with their opponent. -Lincoln defeated incumbent Vice President John C. Breckenridge for the presidency in 1860; Kennedy defeated incumbent Vice President Richard M. Nixon for the presidency in 1960. -Both their predecessors left office in their seventies and retired to Pennsylvania. James Buchanan, whom Lincoln succeeded, retired to Lancaster Township; Dwight D. -Both their Vice Presidents and successors were Southern Democrats named Johnson (Andrew Johnson and Lyndon B. Johnson) who were born in '08. -Both presidents were concerned with the problems of African Americans and made their views strongly known in '63. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, which took effect in 1863. In 1963, Kennedy presented his reports to Congress on Civil Rights, and the same year was the famous March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. -Both presidents were shot in the head on a Friday seated beside their wives. Both Fridays preceded a major holiday observed within the week.

Lincoln and JFK Coincidences -Both presidents were accompanied by another couple. -The male companion of the other couple was wounded by the assassin. -Both presidents had a son die during their presidency. -Both presidents fathered four children, only one of whom survived into the next century and who served other presidents by political appointment. -Both presidents' wives died in their sixties after an untimely decline in health, during the administration of a president who had seen their husbands in Washington, D.C. the same year as the assassination.

Lincoln and JFK Coincidences -Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre; Kennedy was shot by Lee Harvey Oswald in a Lincoln automobile, made by Ford. -Both presidents' last names have 7 letters. -There are 6 letters in each Johnson's (Vice Presidents) first name. -After shooting Lincoln, Booth ran from a theatre to a warehouse; after shooting Kennedy, Oswald ran from a warehouse to a theatre.

Lincoln and JFK Coincidences -Both assassins were Southern white males born in the late '30s, who were in their mid-20s. -Both assassins were killed before being tried, by men who were reared in the North, changed their name as adults, and were bachelors. -Both assassins had 15 letters in their name

Lincoln and JFK Coincidences -Both assassins shot the fatal bullet while in a building where they worked on a floor above ground level. -Both assassins suffered injuries during escape. -Both assassins sympathized with a government that was adversarial to the interests of the United States.

Conspiracy Theories The Mafia- The theorized motive was because his brother was turning up the heat on organised crime. Robert was the US attorney general at the time and his "anti-mafia crusade" lead to a sharp increase in the number of prosecutions of senior mafia figures. Lyndon Baines Johnson- A poll revealed that 20 per cent of Americans believed Johnson had something to do with JFK's death. Some theories include the Johnsons possible desire to become president, his need to cover up scandals, and his involvement with the FBI.

Conspiracy Theories Jackie Kennedy- One of the more farfetched theories alleges that JFK's wife had him killed herself. Could the president's wife have actually been behind his murder? Some theorists claim that Jackie Kennedy was jealous of her husbands alleged affair with Marilyn Monroe and she put a hit on him as an act of revenge. Furthering this theory is the fact that Jackie Kennedy remarried quite quickly following the death of JFK. The Illuminati- A theory is that the president fell foul of the Illuminati because he wanted to end the Vietnam War, a conflict that was paying the "shadowy bankers" lots of money. It is also theorized that they were "angered" by JFK's attempts to "rein in" the power of the US Federal Reserve.
