June is always a lovely month and this year, because of a rather longerwinter than usual, it is even more welcome.

June historically sees the annual Ashtead Village Day (Saturday 8th),and this year the Rotary Club of Ashtead are celebrating the event’s 30thanniversary, please go to the centre pages for details of the day’sprogramme. By the way, don’t forget to enter the Great Ashtead BakeOff competition, the judging for which will take place on Village Day - details of how toenter can be found on page 73. As one of the judges of this competition, I have been intraining now for several weeks, and am now officially the size of a small terracedhouse, however, I believe this to be a small price to pay for being in cake heaven...

This month sees the return of the Ashtead Common Column, the last entry was someyears ago but I’m happy to say that the chaps over at Ashtead Common will now onceagain be submitting their articles each month so we can all discover what’s going on atour Common.

The Leatherhead Post Office will be closing on 3rd June for refurbishment and abeautiful swan will emerge after a week’s building work (page 16).

Just as I go to print, I am informed that the annual Leatherhead Duck Race will takeplace on Sunday 30th June, I’ll try and get some more details in time for the Julyedition which distributes on 26th June.

The Citizens’ Advice Bureau would like us all to bebetter informed when it comes to scams (and thereare great deal of them around at the moment), theiradvice can be found on page 68.

Caroline Cardew-Smith has kindly sent in an updateon the Ashtead Community Vision’s ‘Drop in Day’held at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall on 27thApril and her report can be found on page 34.

I’ve recently started sewing classes (nothing to dowith the recent Sewing Bee show) as my mother wasa seamstress and I’d like to learn how to make myown clothes. Watch out for me and my partnerwalking around in his and hers matching outfits thissummer - groovy!

I’ve received lots of entries to the Surrey CountyShow family ticket competition and, as I am writingthis prior to the draw, I trust the winners have agreat day out in Stoke Park.

Before I shoot off just a reminder that it’s Father’sDay on Sunday 16th June.

I bid you farewell.

Summer is a coming! It finally looks as though Spring and Summer havearrived all at once. Mother Nature looks to havecompressed Spring into a few short weeks followingthe unseasonably cold spell in early April wheneverything just stopped growing. Now with theweather improving everything in the garden has begungrowing at once. Lawns are being mowed, verges cutand hedges beginning to grow.

As well as getting out into the garden, there are manyplaces to see in the area. We are very fortunate tohave on our doorstep many interesting places to visit.

If you go down to the woods today, you may not seeTeddy Bears having a picnic, but it is now dry enoughfor you to have one. You may spot birds of prey -Buzzards have been seen hovering over AshteadCommon. Also the Skylarks are back. The grass hasstarted to grow so the 'Lawn Mowers' are also back. The Four Sussex Red Cattle are out on the topcommon helping manage the wood pastures. The waymarkers and sign posts have been spruced up and arenow being put back out. The Common has beenawarded a 'Green Heritage Site' status - A GreenHeritage Site Accreditation is given in recognition ofachieving the required standard in the managementand interpretation of a site with local or nationalhistoric importance.

Polesden LaceySurrounded by breathtaking views of the Surrey Hills,Polesden Lacey, only six miles from Ashtead, is theideal space for relaxing with friends and family.

Mrs Greville, an ambitious Edwardian hostess, chosePolesden as the idea place for entertaining andrelaxing with friends, and this is what the National

Trust invite you to do now, 100 years on.

The gardens offer something for every season. Inaddition, if you have a dog, once parked you canenjoy the walks around the area and don’t need to bea member of the Trust. The house with its richcollection of art and stories provides a fascinatinginsight into the Edwardian era.

The house will be open seven days a week for the firsttime from March 2013. From 12.30pm weekdays, andfrom 11am on weekends, wander at your leisure. Inaddition, the Trust is offering guided tours 11am-12.30pm Monday to Friday. These 30-minute tours willshow you parts of the house and can be booked atreception on the day. Your ticket will also entitle youto come back into the house after 12.30pm.

HatchlandsA bit further on at East Clandon and just 20 minutesfrom Ashtead is Hatchlands Park, built in the 1750s forAdmiral Edward Boscawen and his wife Fanny. Theygave architect, Robert Adam, one of his earliestcommissions. His work can be seen in interiorsthroughout the house.

Today the mansion is a family home, containingtenant Alec Cobbe’s collection of paintings and finefurniture. Also on display is the Cobbe Collection,Europe’s largest collection of keyboard instrumentsassociated with famous composers including Bach,Chopin and Elgar.

With over 400 acres of parkland, partly landscaped byHumphrey Repton and providing six waymarked walks,Hatchlands is one of the largest country estatessurrounding Greater London. You can also see aformal garden designed by Gertrude Jekyll. So go and enjoy them all.

THE LEATHERHEAD RESIDENTS’ASSOCIATION

If you are reading this, I know you are interestedin what happens in Leatherhead and how it affectsyou, what concerns you, the problems that no oneseems to be doing anything about, fear of cuts inservices because there is less money to go round, rising prices or reducing benefits. How yourchildren can cope now and in the future, when lifewas easier (?) 20,40,60 years ago!

To visitors, Leatherhead is a happy town, they sayso, they come again, they visit the theatre and therestaurants. We have eight charity shops thatsurvive, when the retailers do not. In May we lostAlan’s the florists, temporarily we hope. We arenotorious for our pot hole roads, but we havebeautiful countryside which many come to visit. Wehave congested roads in the rush hour and we needmore housing, provided with adequate parkingspace and, where possible, gardens. We haveelderly residents, who no longer drive, who needbus services and now we are threatened with cutsin hospital services.

All these aspects of planning, conservation, transport, highways, environment, health and socialservices are active concerns for members of theResidents Association committee. We arechallenged with the needs of North Mole Valley, ourtown and our neighbouring communities, supportedby our County and Mole Valley councillors. But – wecould do more if we had just a few more of ourresidents willing to come and help or who wouldtell us the problems of their friends and neighbours, who at the moment do no know where to find theirlocal councillors, since they moved the Help shopand we have lost our notice boards.

Many of our residents are already volunteering andtheir help is vital, more are needed. SurreyCommunity Action held a conference in May, it wasattended by leaders of voluntary organisations andhighlighted a report by RAISE on all that neededsupport in Surrey and how the Council would co-operate with the voluntary sector. It was attendedby people who were blind, deaf, disabled, all whoknow and understand the needs of the community,as well as retired doctors, clergy, Age UK, SurreyIndependent Living Council, Surrey County CouncilLeaders and a Government officer, together withvoluntary support organisations. Their first informaltopic of conversation was fighting the congestedroads to reach the Leisure Centre!

MVDC planning department say: Leatherhead doesnot have the time, the money or the people to planfor our future. We do, we care, we know you areout there, many already doing voluntary work orcaring for family and neighbours. We need yourhelp to work and plan, even if a £2 subscription isthe best you can offer with your complaints orconcerns. But we need more. If our committeemeetings on the first Monday of the month in theInstitute are for committee only, we are still there,if you want to find us. Someone will be there from7pm. 18–100+ in age, you have an independentvoice, and can speak on behalf of your friends andneighbours - we need to hear from you.

Dramatic fall in crime numbersCrime has dropped significantly in Leatherheadand Ashtead following the release of crimestatistics for the last financial year.

In North Leatherhead the drop was 29 per centand was even greater in Ashtead where the fallwas 36 per cent.

Although there was a small increase of 4 percent in South Leatherhead, the level of anti-social behaviour dropped by 18 per cent.

Other impressive figures included reductions of48 per cent in vehicle crime, 39 per cent incriminal damage, 55 per cent in fraud/forgeryand 22 per cent in violence with injury.

Inspector Andrew Rundle, the Mole ValleyBorough Inspector, said the reduction camedespite it now being easier than ever before toreport crimes through channels such as thenew 101 number and social media networks.

Inspector Rundle added “The officers on thisteam have been here and worked on theirareas for a long time. They take responsibilityfor the crimes and incidents that happen andit’s that level of commitment which hasresulted in so many positive interventionsbeing made.”

Reducing garage, shed andgarden crimeBurglars are not only interested in thevaluables inside your house. Equipment kept ina garage, shed or garden can be just astempting.

Many houses are securely alarmed but garagesand sheds are often left insecure and thereforeoffer opportunities for criminals.

Sheds, garages and outbuildings

• Use good quality fixings and a padlock tosecure shed and garage doors

• To prevent door hinges being unscrewed, consider using anti-tamper screws

• Wherever possible, lock windows or fitinternal bars or grilles

• Consider installing a shed alarm

Tools and Equipment

• Consider using a forensic coding productto property mark all valuable tools andequipment with your postcode and housenumber as this will make items uniquelyidentifiable

• If possible, secure lawnmowers and otherequipment to a shed or garage wall

• Lock away tools when you aren’t usingthem

In the garden

• Securing the perimeter of your garden canhelp to protect your property

• An option to consider is trellis fencingwhich doesn’t obstruct visibility and isdifficult to climb over

• If possible utilise holly and hawthornplants as they can provide an effectiveand natural deterrence to anyone thinkingof entering your garden

The pressure's on for Stroke Awareness DayOn Saturday 20th April 2013, as part of StrokeAwareness Day, Doctors Fred Meynen and MargaretBirtwhistle and Nurses Anne Titley and CarolynCorden from the Ashlea Medical Practice inLeatherhead, supported by members of LeatherheadRotary Club, tested the blood pressure of around 60members of the public in the Swan Centre inLeatherhead, a third of whom were recommended tovisit their GP for further checks.

Stroke Awareness Day is an annual nationalcollaboration between Rotary and The StrokeAssociation to raise vital awareness of stroke and toshow how a simple blood pressure test can often flag

up the possible symptoms of stroke at an early stage.

Leatherhead Rotarian, Simon Edmands, who also had his blood pressure tested on the day, said"It's surprising how many people, myself included, never quite get around to visiting their localsurgery or health centre to have their blood pressure checked, when a simple five-minute check-up can flag up potentially life-threatening conditions, such as stroke or a possible heart attack, before it is too late."

Leatherhead Rotary Club meet at 7pm most Wednesdays at the Police Federation Headquarters inHighbury Drive, Leatherhead. For further information about the club and its activities, pleasecontact Simon Edmands on 07753 821964 or [email protected]

The ‘Drop in Day’about theNeighbourhoodDevelopmentPlan held on 27thApril at the APMHwas very wellattended by anestimated 200+

people. The general feedback was that it wasextremely informative and gave much neededinformation about the issues of why houses areneeded, how many and where they could bebuilt. Concerns were expressed about anyalteration to the green belt boundary, butvisitors also engaged with the discussions aroundthe need for new housing and that there is verylittle brownfield or other land available. ACVhas been contacted by some land owners

already and it is expected that more will comeforward during the next few months.

The main focus was on affordable housing forkey workers and starter homes for youngerpeople which were considered under supplied incomparison to larger homes. About the largerhomes, one interesting statistic displayed wasthat 77% of the dwellings have 3 or morebedrooms but 60% of these have less than 3occupants, . Mainly the reason for this is thatpeople are living longer and may like to movefrom a large family house but can’t find suitableapartments or bungalows in Ashtead todownsize.

Regarding infrastructure, the issue of thecurrent and predicted primary school places wasdemonstrated in the Infrastructure display.Visitors also perused the maps showing areas of‘damp spots’ and flooding in existing roads andother places which may not be suitable for

development. The display about the Economy, was divided into retail and business. Factssheets, photos and charts showed the mix ofretail space, employment and local companies.

Suzanne Parkes and Jack Straw, Mole ValleyPlanning Officers, were on hand to answerquestions as were the members of the ACVworking group and the Forum. Much neededrefreshments were kindly served by volunteermembers of the Forum.

The Survey team were kept busy all day. Therewere 4 lap tops where people could do the on-line ‘Housing & Green Belt Boundary Review’survey and in addition over 25 people filled inthe paper version. The survey closed on the 5thMay and over 600 responses were received. Thedemographics show that gender was splitexactly 50/50. Age range of respondents: 18-433%, 35-49 24%, 50-64 36% and 65+ 37%. 14% liveand work in Ashtead making a huge contributionto the economy of the area. 78% of respondentsdid not live in Ashtead before moving to theircurrent house. There was a variety of reasonspeople choose Ashtead to move to, among themost prominent being near the countryside, quiet, good place to bring up a family, andattractive street scenes in terms of house androad styles. The full analysis of the results willbe presented to the Forum at the next meetingand made public thereafter.

Sam and Ruth decided they all needed a breakand some fresh air. As a child, Ruth spent acouple of family holidays on a barge and had fondmemories of opening locks, walking on the towpath and playing monopoly on a rickety table. They’d always have to play the game to the veryend because the table had to be cleared awayand magically transformed into a double bed forher parents.

Sam had never been on a canal boat before. Infact, the only boats he’d ever experienced werethe cross channel and Isle of Wight ferries. However he could control a car and had driven atractor so was naïvely confident that he’dmanage with the slow pace of a canal barge.

One thing he remembered from his childhood wasfishing. His father used to spend hours by theside of the local lake, patiently waiting for abite. Sam had always carried the sentimentalvision of introducing his own sons to the pastime. He’d even suggested it on a couple of occasionsbut neither Ben nor Daniel had shown theslightest interest. Sam felt this barge holidaywould be the perfect opportunity to spend somequality ‘bonding’ time with his boys, sharingstories as they held their rods and gazed into thedepths of the canal.

As they set off in the car, Ruth and Sam were fullof romantic images of sparkling sunshine, familygames of monopoly and happy children, frolickingin the fresh air, feeding the ducks and fishing, lots of fishing.

They’d booked a short break on a lovely lookingbarge on the Kennet and Avon canal and wereplanning to gently cruise down to Bath. Theweather forecast was good and the car wascrammed with food, clothes, games and fishingrods. She’d also packed waterproof jackets butwas sure they wouldn’t be needed.

Sadly, they were needed, as soon as they arrivedat the boatyard. Sam and Ruth found their boat, which was called ‘The Sunny Duchess’ andunpacked the car in driving rain. The childrenwere too excited to worry about getting wet andcharged about with exuberance, until the boatyard manager gave them a stern talking to aboutsafety near water. As Ruth carried a soggycardboard box containing baked beans, matches, fruit pastilles and sun cream, she wondered howlong it would be before one of the children fell inthe canal and which child it would be.

The manager gave Sam a quick lesson on how touse the engine, how to pump out the bilges,

where to fill up with water and how to use thelocks. Before they had a chance to think of anyquestions, he untied them and waved them ontheir way.

Sam coped quite well while he was steering in astraight line but the first lock was quite achallenge. He tried to stay in control but soongathered an audience of passers by, enjoying hisevident amateur status. Ben and Daniel managedto use the windlasses to wind up the paddles andthen push the gates after considerable help froman experienced and very patient barge owner inthe boat behind them. Sarah stayed on board, fascinated and terrified by the gushing torrentsof water as the lock filled and the barge slowlyrose to the upper level.

The sun shone wetly through the clouds as theymoored up for the night. Daniel and Ben enjoyedbanging the long heavy spikes into the groundand tying up with the soggy heavy ropes. Theirknots were unorthodox but would hopefully dothe job.

Ruth started cooking and Sam got the fishing rodsout. After a couple of minutes, Ruth heard ashrill scream and raced up on deck. Sarah wassobbing. She’d caught a fish and wasinconsolable in her grief. The thought of beingresponsible for the death of a living creature wasjust too much for her.

Ruth filled a bowl with water and the tiny fishtwitched back into life in its temporary home.Sam carefully removed the hook from its gapingmouth and lowered the bowl into the water. Theminnow plopped back into the canal and gingerlystarted to swim away. Sarah turned to hermother, beaming with delight and relief. Onlyher brothers and father saw what happened nextand they were immediately bound together insecrecy,

While Ruth and Sarah enjoyed their celebratoryhug, an elegant snow-whites wan glided in theirdirection and, with one seamlessly smoothaction, swooped down and Sarah’s fishdisappeared.

The Common Column

Welcome back to the Common Column after a few years of absence! We hope you will enjoy this regular update about what has beenhappening on Ashtead Common, owned and managed by the CityCommons team at the City of London. As spring turns into summer, our butterfly, bird and reptile surveys arein full swing. Look out for the amazing wildlife found on your doorstep- grass snakes and lizards basking in the sun and summer migrants – chiffchaff, willowwarbler, whitethroat, lesser whitethroat, garden warbler and blackcap – raising theiryoung, using the plentiful insects in Ashtead’s grassland. Buzzards are seen over theCommon fairly regularly now, as well as kestrels and sparrowhawks.

You may have heard in thenews about the variousdiseases that are affecting theUK’s trees at the moment. Some of these are particularlyrelevant to us at CityCommons, such as ash dieback. This serious disease of ashtrees is caused by a funguscalled Chalara fraxinea whichcauses leaf loss and crowndieback, usually leading totree death. It has come intothis country on importedsaplings, but also windblownnaturally across the Channel.

In response to this threat, we have pulled together a group of ‘tree warden’ volunteers, who are out surveying for the location of ash trees, ready to check them for ash diebackduring the summer months. Although there is nothing that can be done about its spread,we have a legal responsibility to report any signs of the disease and can help withnational data collection. A big thank you goes to all those helping with this project.

A new entrance project is underway on Ashtead Common, stemming from a volunteeraudit of the site which looked at our signage and countryside furniture. The AshteadCommon Volunteers have been moving, replacing and repairing dead hedges, installingbar ways and clearing paths. The dead hedges allow walkers through whilst restrictingaccess for horse riders and cyclists. Soon, new entrance maps and way-marking discs willbe added to clearly show who can use these different paths. Some benches have beenreplaced and way-markers and sign posts have been spruced up.

To keep up to date with what’s going on, please do like our Facebook page and follow uson Twitter @citycommons. If you want to receive our free monthly email update pleasecontact us on 01372 279083 or [email protected] and we will add you toour mailing list.

PygmalionGeorge Bernard ShawLong before Julie Andrews wasbeaten to the film role by AudreyHepburn, My Fair Lady began lifeas Bernard Shaw’s triumphantcomic play Pygmalion. Thedeliciously arrogant ProfessorHenry Higgins makes a bet thathe can turn ‘guttersnipe’ ElizaDoolittle into a lady but she is farfrom being the downtroddenflower girl he believes her to be.It’s one of Shaw’s greatestcritiques of the English classsystem and it’s abso-bloomin’-lutely hilarious to boot.

Old Possum’s Book ofPractical CatsT.S. EliotWhen Cats were merely kittens inLloyd Webber’s eyes, readerswere curling up in a sunny cornerwith T.S. Eliot’s Practical Cats.Writing under the name ‘OldPossum’ in letters to hisgodchildren, Eliot’s poemsincluded tales of Macavity, Mr.Mistoffelees and BustopherJones. The charming collection ismuch-loved the world over for itsunique take on cat psychology.

Les MiserablesVictor HugoJean Valjean is a man who’sdesperate to escape his past, butwith a policeman like Javert on

his tail, this escaped convict isgoing to have a battle on hishands. Les Mis has everything:mistaken identity, injustice andlove, all set against the backdropof the French Revolution. It’s theworld’s longest running musical, and most recently gave us thecinematic opportunity to seeHugh Jackman without a shirt on.

Chitty Chitty Bang BangIan FlemingChitty Chitty Bang Bang: TheMusical Car was written by IanFleming of James Bond fame, who penned the original three-part series for his son. The ideahas to be every child’s dream: aflying car. Inventor CaratacusPotts restores a second-handvehicle and he and his childrenname it after the sound of abackfiring engine. It soonbecomes clear that Chitty isn’tyour average automobile and thefamily embarks on an adventurethat involves kidnap andgangsters, cross-channel flyingand some bizarre characters. When Chitty made it to the WestEnd, audiences poured in to seethe flying car in all its glory.

Oliver TwistCharles DickensFagin told his boys they ‘gottapick a pocket or two’ andcomposer Lionel Bart pickedmore than an idea or two from

Dickens, transposing theVictorian London of Oliver Twistto the stage, along with thewonderful characters of Twisthimself, lovable rogue The ArtfulDodger and simply terrifyingthug, Bill Sykes. Dickens’ novelopens with Twist enduring life inthe workhouse before beingtaken on by an undertaker. Heescapes, only to fall in withFagin’s gang of pickpockets. Thebook’s a lot darker than themusical with the brutality of thestreets along with the povertyand drudgery of many ofLondon’s lower classes portrayedvividly.

Wicked: The Life andTimes of the WickedWitch of the WestGregory MaguireWritten in 1995, Maguire’s novelis set in the land of Oz, waybefore Dorothy and Toto followthe yellow brick road. Elphaba isa girl who was born green, withsharp teeth and a disagreeabletemperament. In Maguire’svision, Oz is imaginativelyrecreated, with all itsTechnicolor splendour practicallyseeping from the page. But thereare sinister goings on, adultthemes and a not-so-happy-ending .The young Elphaba soonlearns that it’s really not easybeing green.

The West End will soon be heavingagain as tourists flock to see thehottest musicals. Many of themstarted life as novels, plays andpoetry, and the authors’ words were adapted into catchyshow-tunes and moving ballads. Here’s our pick of the best-loved tales to get the toe-tapping treatment.

We have a speakerat each meetingfollowed byrefreshments andsocial time to chatto our friends andthere is always timeto book for some ofour other activities.Every quarter wepublish a newsletter

with details of upcoming activities.

Throughout the year we arrange various activities. Supper Club and Pub lunches, both verypopular are held at different venues in the area. We also arrange theatre trips by coach, usuallyto Woking, at very competitive rates which quickly sell out, and our Chairman, Don Butt, arrangestwice yearly coach outings to places of interest.

Why not come along to our meetings and see for yourself? You can be sure of a warm welcome. Our next meeting is on June 19th when our speaker will be Commodore Peter Swan speakingabout his personal experience on the Royal yacht Brittania.

Our Chairman, Don Butt, is waiting for your call. Why not give him a ring on 01372 274288

Ashtead Women’s Institute - May meetingFollowing the usual update with news of our members, we talkedabout the W.I. Resolution on ‘The Decline of High Streets andTown Centres’ which will be further discussed and voted on atthe W.I. AGM at Cardiff in June.

Further business of the evening was on the W.I. RevisedConstitution, to Update and Modify Objectives of the W.I., andthere was a questionnaire on the future of Annual meetings atDorking Halls, or whether these meetings should take place witha different format or at other venues.

Our speaker at the May meeting was member Rosemary Stark, telling us of her wonderful holidayin New Zealand, taken over Christmas 2011 and New Year 2012. We heard about the many typesof flora & fauna, beautiful scenery, lakes, roads empty of traffic and walks with enjoyablecompany. She told us of the Christmas Tree in the sun, and of celebrating New Year’s Eve at theSkyline Restaurant for a meal with wonderful views and fireworks. Sadly, Christchurch lookedvery different after the earthquake, but the city and its people are trying very hard to continue asusual and keep their spirits up.

A visit to Borde Hill Gardens & Mansion in June has been suggested. News was also given on atheatre visit, ‘Goodbye to All That‘ performed by members of Surrey Federation of WIs.

As always there was information on our many sub groups – Reading, Theatre, Yarn, Scrabble,Craft, Walking, and a local lunch. At our next meeting on June 5th the speaker will be Mr RupertMatthews, on Ghosts of Surrey.

Leatherhead Morning Women’s Institute

The April meeting was a celebration of our 28thbirthday, which was well attended and visitors fromBookham and Fetcham were welcomed. Ourforthcoming trip to Worthing will be in June and inSeptember we will have a trip to the Chilterns.

After we enjoyed a delicious birthday cake made byour President, Hazel Richmond-Coggan, we wereentertained by our speaker, Neil Riley from Dorking, who is the Chairman of and campaigner for, the

local branch of the ME Association.

The theme of his talk was the art of public speaking. If you are ever asked to make aspeech it can cause many sleepless nights in anticipation. We learned that it is a greathelp to smile, and to know your subject thoroughly. A distraction these days is whensomeone’s mobile phone rings and it is best to ignore it, as it diverts attention fromthe speaker. Neil had many amusing anecdotes, and gave a good insight into his petsubject.

Our meetings are held on the fourth Thursday in the month at Leatherhead ParishChurch Hall at 10.15am. For more information ring Betty on 01372 374570.

He was born in Norwich, Norfolk, in October 1918 and began his career as a child actor beforebecoming popular in juvenile roles. He was groomed by the Rank Studio system during his teenageyears and earned film stardom as a "boy-next-door" type.

The young star-struck actor attended the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts and whilst he wasstudying there, made his stage debut at age 12 at the London Palladium, as John Darling in PeterPan. He began to make films in his teens.

During the Second World War he served as an officer with the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, and in a commando raid in Norway he was wounded in the leg and was invalided out of theservice. He returned to films, including Salute John Citizen (1942), Henry V with Laurence Olivier(1944), For You Alone (1945) The Blue Lamp (1950) The Galloping Major (1951) and the HuggettsFamily series of films.

He later worked on radio and TV, appearing in several television series and hosting the ITV seriesJim's Inn from 1957–1963, which combined advertising messages with the plot of a soap opera. For many years he was a real life publican, for he and his second wife ‘Maggie’ ran "The Plough" atEffingham (pictured above right).

His first wife was actress Dinah Sheridan (1942–1953) they had three children, including JennyHanley and the Conservative politician Sir Jeremy Hanley. The third died in infancy. He thenmarried actress Margaret Avery in 1955, they had three daughters: Jane, Sarah and Katy.

He died from pancreatic cancer in Fetcham in January 1970, aged 51.

Have you been diagnosed with irritable bowelsyndrome (IBS) and don’t know where to turnor how to address your symptoms?Do you have bloating? Abdominal discomfort?Or do you experience urgency to go to the loo?

If you have been diagnosed with IBS or afunctional gut disorder – the low FODMAP dietcould be the answer to your problems!Foods that you thought were beneficial to yourhealth might in fact be causing you pain anddiscomfort – these might include mushrooms;peas; apples; peaches; or even sugar-freechewing gum!

IBS affects up to 20% of the UK population andthe symptoms can include abdominal bloatingand distension, excess wind (flatulence),abdominal pain, nausea, changes in bowelhabits (diarrhoea, constipation, or acombination of both), and other gastro-intestinal symptoms.Sometimes, people with other gut disorders(e.g. inflammatory bowel disease) can havethe above symptoms and may benefit fromsimilar dietary changes. It is very important torule out all the possible causes for theseproblems, so if you do have concerns, pleaseseek medical advice.

The low FODMAP diet originated in Australiaand was developed by a team at MonashUniversity in Melbourne. It has beensuccessfully adapted to the UK by researchersat Kings College London. The diet involves reducing fermentablecarbohydrates that are found in our diet, and,in so doing reducing gut symptoms in over 75%of people who suffer with IBS symptoms.FODMAPs is an acronym referring toFermentable Oligosaccharides,Disaccharides,Monosaccharides and Polyols andthese are found in the foods we eat on a dailybasis.

FODMAPs are a collection of molecules found infood, which can be poorly digested by somepeople. When the molecules are poorlydigested in the small intestine of the digestivetract, these molecules continue along thedigestive tract, arriving at the large intestine, where they act as a food source to thebacteria that live there normally. The bacteria

then ferment these molecules. In thefermentation process gas is produced in thebowel and this excess gas can cause some ofthe symptoms of IBS. Another feature of thesemolecules is that they draw water into the gutfrom the rest of the body and this process canresult in urgency to go to the loo or loosebowel movements. Dietary changes cansignificantly improve IBS symptoms. If you wanted to follow this diet – it wouldinvolve 6 weeks of the low FODMAP diet, followed by the reintroduction stage, whereyou trial the foods that you had eliminatedduring the low FODMAP stage – the length ofthis stage varies from person to person.

Contact Isabelle Fry at Diet Matters if you havebeen diagnosed with IBS or feel that this dietcould help relieve your gastro-intestinalsymptoms.

Citizens’ Advice Chief Executive GillianGuy said: “Scammers have never had itso good as they exploit difficulteconomic times. For most people therecession has been really tough but it’sa different story for rogues andtricksters as they’ve cashed in on otherpeople’s misfortune. We’re seeingpeople who have been dealt a doubleblow by losing their job and then losingmoney while trying to find a new one"

The Citizens’ Advice Bureau has prepared ahandy checklist:

How to spot a scamAll these are signs that it might be a scam:

• The call, letter, e-mail or text has comeout of the blue

• You’ve never heard of the lottery orcompetition they are talking about

• You didn’t buy a ticket – so I can’t win it!• They are asking you to send money in

advance• They are saying you have to respond

quickly, so you don’t get time to thinkabout it or ask family and friends beforeyou decide

• They are telling you to keep it a secret• They seem to be offering you something

for nothing• If it seems too good to be true – it

probably is!

How to protect yourself betterThese are some things you can do:

• Never give out contact details like yourname, phone number or address tostrangers or to people who should havethis information already

• Never give financial information or detailsof your identity, bank accounts or creditcard to strangers or to the businesses thatshould already hold your details

• Shred anything with your personal or bankdetails on – don’t just throw it away

• If in doubt, don’t reply. Bin it, delete it orhang up

• Persuasive sales patter? Just say: “NoThank You”

• Take your time – resist pressure to make adecision straight away

• Never send money to someone you don’tknow

• Walk away from job adverts that ask formoney in advance

• Ask friends, neighbours or family aboutwhether an offer is likely to be a scam

Fetcham Village Hall in The Street is 80 this year!Open Day - Saturday 8th June

In 1929 the growing number of themembers of the Women’s Institutethat was formed in the Village in1927, was exceeding the capacity ofthe Reading Room where they metand it was through their drive andenthusiasm that a campaign tocreate a Village Hall for Fetchamstarted. The result was that acommittee was formed to progressthe idea and not without someinevitable setbacks, a large timberframed barn by Home Farm was

purchased and through both paid and voluntary support converted into the Hall that now stands. It was opened to the public on the 20th May 1933 by the Viscountess Castlereagh. To meet thewartime need for a British Restaurant an additional smaller hall and kitchen was built and openedin May 1942 and was for many years after where generations of school children went for lunch.

On Saturday 8th June there will be an Open Day [entry free] to mark the occasion when all areinvited to drop in between 10am to 4pm and see displays on the History and some of the originalplans, stands by users of the Halls and by other organisations. The original WI banner which willhave been especially framed and mounted on the wall will be revealed for the first time. Comeand join in the celebrations and perhaps meet your friends. The Leatherhead Theatre Repertory Co. presents The Golden Pathway AnnualBy John Harding & John Burrows, directed by Graham PountneyTuesday 4th June until Saturday 15th June, Saturday Matinees at 2:30pmAll evening performances at 7:30pm; In the Casson Room, *Please note access via stairs only*£12. Concessions, £10. Student, £5.

The Golden Pathway Annual is a brilliantly funny, touching, nostalgic andoften Python-esque look at the Baby Boom austerity years of the 1950s andthe swinging 60s. A series of loosely connected fast-moving sketches whisk usthrough the life of Michael Peters from the age of 2 to 23. Michael is givenThe Golden Pathway Annual on his 5th birthday and its fictional characterserupt into his real life as he grows up through the Coronation, GrammarSchool, adolescent awakenings, alienation from his parents, tries to find a joband encounters a large chicken!

The show is a spectacular trip down Memory Lane for those who were there and a glimpse into anotherworld for those who weren't, all wrapped up with a lot of comedy and touches of pathos. But it’s morethan that: every scene is brilliantly written, the majority hilarious, the rest genuinely moving.

Opera Brava presents RigolettoSaturday 1st June, 7:30pm. £16. Friends /Concessions, £14. Child, £8Opera Brava returns for its twelfth year and has assembled a fabulous cast ofyoung, exciting and thrilling singers mixed with some international artists, whohave performed in major opera houses including Covent Garden and EnglishNational Opera.

One of opera's most vivid and tragic characters, Rigoletto, a vengeful courtjester, desperately tries to protect his daughter from disaster in thisbeautifully crafted masterpiece.

In the recent blockbuster movie ‘Quartet’ the whole film centres around thewonderful quartet from Rigoletto. Why not come, see and hear thismagnificent new production by Opera Brava in Verdi’s 200th anniversary year?

Transition AshteadWorking towards a sustainable Ashtead

Walking back to happiness…Have you ever seen children at play in a park or garden? They remind me of perpetual motion machines, theynever stop running about, climbing on things andgenerally being on the go, usually laughing and smilingall the time. Most of us naturally become moresedentary as we grow up, and swap walking, cyclingand running for more sedate options like driving, taking the lift and plain old sitting in a chair… butthese habits can make us unfit and overweight, problems that creep up on us slowly over time andsuddenly you have that uninvited guest, the Spare Tyre.If you think you don’t have time for exercise, think

again…making walking or cycling part of your daily routinecan make a huge difference. Which local journeys could you do

by foot or bike? Could you cycle to the station, get off the bus astop earlier, walk down to the shops, walk the kids to school? Andwhat is good for you is also good for the environment, reducing CO2emissions and cutting down your fuel bill too.

The NHS recommends walking as a great way to “build stamina, burn excess calories and give youa healthier heart.” How far could you walk in a day? 10,000 steps is an NHS target. All walkingcounts, whether it’s up and down the office while you’re on the phone, or taking the stairsinstead of the lift. Here’s a bit of maths for you - a pound of fat on your tum represents about3500 calories. So to lose a pound in a week, you’d need to burn an extra 500 calories a day (7 x500 = 3500). A simple rule of thumb is a 10 stone person walking a mile will burn about 75calories. That would be about 6.5 miles a day…to lose a pound a week. Or 52 lbs a year. That isquite a lot of walking but if you walked just 3 miles a day, you could theoretically lose half apound a week (or 25 lbs a year, nearly 2 stones!!). The numbers are somewhat theoretical butramping up your level of physical activity on a regular basis will help you achieve a healthyweight, as long as it’s part of a calorie-controlled diet of course…

On the cycling front, there’s been fantastic news recently about funding for a cycle path betweenLeatherhead and Ashtead – fingers crossed it will be used effectively. Gaining some cyclingconfidence in a traffic- free environment will I’m sure encourage many more cyclists back into thesaddle, which could start a virtuous circle of fewer and fewer cars making room for more andmore bikes. (If you enjoyed the maths above, here are some more numbers - moderate cycling at10 – 12 mph burns about 400 calories an hour.)

So whether you cycle or walk more, using muscle power instead of motor power will put a smileon your face and a spring in your step – as Helen Shapiro sang in the 60s, “Walking back tohappiness… Whoop aye oh yeah-yeah!”

Chris Ellis

Next Open Meeting will be on Thursday 13th June at Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall,7.30pm, Jamie Chisolm from the Bike Bean Cafe will be talking about ‘Improving cycleroutes in Ashtead’

Bugs and BeastiesBy Pippa GreenwoodBugs and beasties are really thriving in thiswarmer weather, so just how should youdeal with the most common problems youare likely to encounter at this time of year?AphidsGreenfly and blackfly, also known asaphids, can be a real menace as they sucksap from your plants and can transmitviruses at the same time. Aphids breedincredibly rapidly, so regular control isnecessary.•Check plants regularly and either spraywith a suitable insecticide or a soap orplant oil based insecticide

•Use biological controls – they’re totallysafe for all other creatures and of courseleave no residues

•Use a strong jet of water to blast theaphids off plants, but do a thorough jobor else they will soon be back up andcausing damage

CaterpillarsCaterpillars come in all shapes, sizes andcolours, but can do a lot of damage as theymunch their way through your plants andperhaps even into your vegetables.•Hand pick the pest where possible andeither squash or place on the bird table. They’re easiest to spot at dusk or veryearly in the morning.

• Spray with a suitable contact insecticideor better still use the Nemasys Caterpillarbiological control.

• Some caterpillars, in particular theTortrix Moth produce quantities of finewebbing which they use to bind leaves orother plant parts together to createparticularly safe shelters for themselves. It’s hard for a pesticide to actually reachthem so hand picking or squashing isoften the best answer.

•Cover caterpillar-susceptible crops suchas calabrese, broccoli and other brassicaswith Envirofleece or Enviromesh.

WoodliceWoodlice often cause a lot of concern, however these little creatures are rarelyresponsible as they simply do not haveadequately strong mouthparts. They cancause damage to soft new growth or

occasionally to soft-fleshed fruits such asstrawberries but can’t tackle tougher plantgrowth. You may see them at the ‘scene ofthe crime’ and presume that they havecaused the initial damage but they haveprobably moved in to clean up a lot of thedebris created by other creatures.EarwigsEarwigs can cause quite a bit of damage, particularly on the flowers of plants such asclematis and dahlias, where they nibble outlarge quantities of petal or occasionally leaf.Try trapping them using an invertedflowerpot on top of a bamboo cane. Thebamboo cane and pot should be positionedamongst susceptible plants and the potneeds to be stuffed loosely full of hay, strawor similar material. The earwigs climb inthere to hide and the pots can them simplybe emptied out on a regular basis.MildewAlthough neither bug nor beastie, powderymildew is also a problem at this time ofyear; it coats plant leaves, stems, buds andsometimes even petals with a white flourydeposit. Sometimes the mildew can alsoprevent fruits from swelling normally, causethe leaves to become distorted and even fallearly. Prompt action is essential and if youwish you can use a proprietary fungicide butcheck the label carefully for suitability.Keep the damage to a minimum in the firstinstance by ensuring that the plants are keptwell watered. In addition try to ensure agood flow of air around the plants. A bit ofcareful pruning or weeding often helps too.
