The modern internet commenced way back in the 1980’s following the work of British computer scientist, Tim Berners-Lee and since then has undergone unbelievable expansion impacting on all of us in some shape or form. The rise in instant communication by electronic mail, instant messaging, the world wide web, discussion forums , electronic banking , online shopping, blogs and social networking have been with us for only a short time. Social networking sites are always in the news and someone is always making the headlines after placing a message, or photo that causes later angst and embarrassment. One particular tool that I was introduced to this week is Instagram. I knew very little of this but had a quick lesson because I was alerted to the fact a number of students in our school were communicating via this tool. One of the first things I did was to check the age that young people can actually sign up to Instagram. The information showed me that to use Instagram, people must be 13 years or older. It was apparent that primary school children using Instagram are not actually age appropriate. I questioned a number of the students and asked how they were able to join up and many responded that they gave a fake age which allowed them to be users. Many of them told me that their parents knew they were using Instagram. Whilst at first the group exchanged harmless messages I was a little concerned to see the group had expanded and that others from outside the school group had joined in and a number were unknown to the original users. Instagram is really an out of school thing. It is a parent’s responsibility. However, it may be timely for you as parents to make a check on your own child’s social networking sites. Perhaps you could then follow up with regular monitoring. It is disturbing that they may be communicating with people unknown to them. I know that if my eleven year old child was using social networking sites I would want to know about it. Continuing with technology - many children now have their own mobile phones which they bring to school. This makes sense if they wish to contact parents after school to discuss pick up times and other arrangements. However, when parents enrol students at this school they sign an undertaking that they will follow the guidelines that have been developed to ensure consistency and proper use of mobile phones. One important guideline is that children do not use the phone at school between the hours of 9AM and 3 PM unless given permission by a teacher. Could you please join with me and ensure that your child is well aware of this? Thank you for your cooperation. NAPLAN is now over for another year. As we move into semester two a lot of our intervention programs will target the children in years two and four as they make their journey towards NAPLAN in 2017. We should know our NAPLAN performance from this year later in term three. The Internal School Review was completed last Friday. The initial feedback from the review team was fantastic. I was a very proud principal to be able to hear such positive feedback of our students, teachers and school community. Next week we have inter school sport commencing on Monday, the district cross country on Thursday and the senior band will be at Fanfare on Friday. Another big week for us all. As you know, last week the P&C conducted the Mother’s Day Stall to enable children to purchase a small gift for their mum. The stall was run by generous parents for the three days providing helpful advice and friendly service to the students as they made their special purchases. Thank you to all those parents who gave their time and special thanks to our organizers who acquired the gifts and arranged the raffle prizes.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Technology is a wonderful thing isn’t it?

It is timely to be mentioning the work of our P&C as this week has been set aside as P&C Week. The national assessment held this week has not given us much breathing space to publicly acknowledge the role of P&C’s in our schools, but on behalf of Arundel students and staff I would like to recognise the work of our own P&C. Tomorrow at the P&C May Meeting, school staff will show their appreciation of the support by providing afternoon tea and other surprises. You are all invited. Staffroom – 3:30pm.

Only a two day weekend this week, it looks like the cooler weather has arrived.
