let’s meet up:hello!

I have always loved summer. Maybe it goes back to my childhood, when the last day of school in mid-June ushered in the promise of what seemed like endless days of play without schedule, agenda, or homework. Back then, the days didn’t seem so swelteringly hot- I’m not sure if that’s because of climate change, or because as a kid playing outside I just didn’t notice the heat...

One of my favorite things about summer is the light and simple food that is “just right” during the warmer weather- fresh fruits and vegetables, and anything that my husband can prepare on the grill. I love visiting the local farm anything that my husband can prepare on the grill. I love visiting the local farm stands and seeing what looks good and fresh for dinner. The recipes that I’m sharing in this issue are a couple of my favorites- satisfying, but not heavy. You will feel healthy and downright virtuous after dinner!

Several weeks ago, I asked you to share your photos of your favorite thing about summer via Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. You will find all of my favorites (several pages worth!) starting on page 21. The winner will recieve a favorites (several pages worth!) starting on page 21. The winner will recieve a bundle of books and patterns. We will probably do this again for the next issue, so get your cameras ready!

In this issue, I also have my first ever “guest designer,” Teresa Raleigh. Teresa designed all of the cute sewing projects in this issue. I’m sure you’re going to want to start stitching them up immediately.... I know her projects inspired me to run straight to my sewing room....

This is such a fun, versatile craft! Basically, all you need is some plain notepads, heavy paper, glue, and your imagination! You’ll have fun making them, but it’s also a great activity for the kids- buy bulk packages of plain notepads at the office supply store, and let the kids spend a day decorating them for themselves and for gifts. The notepads can be personalized with a name, and can be decorated just about any way notepads can be personalized with a name, and can be decorated just about any way you can think of- I used watercolors, but you could color the designs in with colored pencils, markers, or crayons. Or, use stickers, glitter, rubber stamps… whatever you happen to have in your stash of craft supplies. I even embellished mine with a bit of rick rack trim. My daughter, the Art History major, was inspired by ancient art when she was decorating hers with watercolor and acrylic paint. Really, the possibilities are endless!

When I designed this line, I was thinking about those quiet activities that bring us joy and peace- stitching, curling up with a good book, enjoying a cup of tea.... I hope that creating and playing with these fabrics will bring you quiet contentment as well!

What’s your idea of

For our family, it’s about casual, fresh food- My husband takes over at the grill and I take care of a few quick & easy side dishes. Then we all enjoy eating outside in the nice weather- somehow, food tastes better when eaten outdoors!

This is one of our favorite summer meals. Most of the prep work for the lemony, garlicky Chicken Souvlaki with zesty Tzaziki garlicky Chicken Souvlaki with zesty Tzaziki Sauce and Orzo Salad with Spinach and Feta can be done ahead of time. Marinate the chicken and make the salad and Tzaziki sauce early in the day, then at dinner time just grill the chicken and you’re done. And of course- it’s delicious!

For the kebabs:1 1/4 pounds boneless chicken breast and/or thighs, cut into 1 1/2” chunks2 large green peppers, cut into 1 1/2” chunks1/4 cup olive oil1/2 cup white wine3 tablespoons fresh oregano, roughly chopped3 tablespoons fresh oregano, roughly chopped3 garlic cloves, crushed1 teaspoon Kosher salt

For the Tzaziki sauce:1 large cucumber, peeled & seeds removed; finely chopped & placed in strainer to drain off excess liquid2 cups plain Greek yogurt2 cups plain Greek yogurt2 cloves garlic, minced1 tablespoon good quality olive oil

1 large or 2 small lemonsPita bread for serving

Zest the lemon peel with a grater or zester. You will need 1 1/2 tablespoons of lemon zest for the chicken.Juice the lemon(s). You will need 1/4 cup lemon juice for the chicken and 1 1/2 tablespoons for the Tzaziki sauce. Juice the lemon(s). You will need 1/4 cup lemon juice for the chicken and 1 1/2 tablespoons for the Tzaziki sauce. Set aside.

Prepare the kebabs: In a large bowl, combine 1/4 cup lemon juice, 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon zest, olive oil, white wine, oregano, crushed garlic and Kosher salt. Toss in the chicken and pepper chunks, marinate for 1-3 hours.

Meanwhile, make the Tzaiki sauce: Combine all of the listed ingredients plus 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice in a bowl. Add salt to taste. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.

Preheat your grill. Alternate the chicken and peppers on the skewers. Grill over medium heat, basting with remaining marinade for first 7 minutes of cooking only. Grill until chicken is done, about 15-20 minutes total, remaining marinade for first 7 minutes of cooking only. Grill until chicken is done, about 15-20 minutes total, turning frequently.

Place kebabs on pita bread and drizzle with Tzaziki sauce. Remove skewers before eating. Makes 4-5 servings.

When I was in college, I worked as a waitress in a Greek restaurant. I never got tired of my standard lunch there- a big salad with grilled pita bread and lots & lots of thick, creamy Tzaziki sauce! Greek food is still among my very favorite cuisines.

You will need skewers, either metal or wooden. If using wooden, soak them in water for about 15 minutes befominutes before adding the chicken and peppers. This will help keep them from catching fire on the grill.
