ShaNGhaIbREEzE FaN

An icon of design in both mainland China and Taiwan, Carl Liu lives by design that is as functional as it is aesthetically beautiful. An industrial designer by training, Carl’s prod-ucts are defined by his curiosity for problem-solving. Says Carl, “Some designers aim to be famous. I just want to create truly timeless, quality products. It’s a never-ending learning process. Everyone today is in a rush. But good design cannot be rushed. It takes patience, learning.” Two decades of designing are testament to his dedication to the process of design.

Featuring 28 of Shanghai’s most iconic buildings on each hand-cut, sandalwood blade, the Shanghai Breeze Fan artfully opens to represent China’s modernization over the past two decades. The fan represents New China through an ancient aesthetic; in Liu’s words, “The fan is something solid from the past to hold on to, at the same time reflecting the progress that has taken place in the last ten years in China.”

An audacious blend of entrepreneur-ial zeal and Chinese artistry, David Jia is fast driving Sansa to become one of China’s foremost design brands, representing a brilliant blend of Chinese philosophy and modern design. As founder and creative di-rector of China’s largest design firm, LKK Design, David and his talented team founded Sansa to become China’s leading design brand and an international first: Designed by China.

Sansa is China’s first design compa-ny to win the Red Dot, IF, and IDEA design awards in 2008. Ever since, the brand has continued winning international and domestic acclaim for its stunning designs.

Experience a serenity rarely found in the fast-growing cities of modern China. The Sansa team spent months experi-menting with the movement of smoke along the stones to find a visual depiction of true peace and happiness as found in nature. The end design allows incense to billow down-wards softly down the side of the mountain when lit. Made from black goldstone polished with titanium alloy.

Burning incense leaves a trail like the footsteps of a tiger climbing a mountain. The design is reminiscent of our upward walk through life, with scattered ashes representing the challenges faced along the journey. An elegant, modern interpretation of the ancient Han Dynasty bronze tigers. Available in ceramic or wood and gold.

SONG ChaRGER

The story of Latitude22N starts with artisan couple Julie and Jesse Mclin, whose fateful encounter at a ceram-ics kiln led to a true love story. The two debuted their first porcelain col-lection at their wedding. The pieces were so popular among their guests that they launched Latitude22N, now one of Hong Kong’s leading porce-lain designer brands. Julie and Jesse have proven growing worldwide demand for modern Asian design, receiving commissions from many clients including the W hotel and Standard Chartered Private Banking. In 2011, Latitude22N won both the DESIGN FOR ASIA award for The Night Market collection as well as the 40 Under 40 Perspective Maga-zine award.

Designed in Hong Kong by artisans Julie & Jesse of Latitu-de22N, each celadon-glazed piece is completely unique. Rather than mass-producing the collection, Latitude22N chose to have each piece hand-carved in a family-run workshop in Jingdezhen, Chi-na. The simple flourishes and elegant celadon glaze, as well as the depictions of humans’ interaction with nature, are inspired by Song dynasty art.

Latitude’s ripple cup takes its cue from the blue and white patterns of the scrolls and vases of classical Chinese painting. Each ripple cup is hand-made and hand-painted by expert craftsmen in Jingdezhen, after which only the best are picked out and given the mark of approval with a series of 14-karat gold flourishes.

Zhoujie Zhang’s fantastical furniture brings to mind digitization and ga-lactic travels. It’s near impossible to imagine that these futuristic designs came from a boy trained in classi-cal arts in rural village of Ningbo, China. Growing up, Zhoujie says, “I had this feeling that there were unknown forms of artistic expression beyond my village. His graduation collection at St. Martin’s College of Art and Design was so well-received internationally that he has since be-come heralded in mainland China as a design prodigy. Today Zhoujie and his team in Shanghai create stunning hand-welded steel works using digital imaging.

Industrial design professor turned entrepreneur, Junjie Zhang, ex-plains the inspiration behind Sozen from the time he took students to the oldest bamboo villages in Shenzhou. “These were some of the wealthiest rural villages in the 70s and 80s, with master arts craftsmen that had been commissioned by Deng Xiaoping and other high-rank-ing officials. But in the 90s, times changed. When my students and I went, we found most of the crafts-men were over 60, the masters were in their 70s and 80s. They had very few orders, just woven baskets for some European clients, bamboo figures for tourist shops. I had such a feeling of loss for these valued artisan skills of the past. We found-ed SOZEN to find a way to inte-grate traditional crafts with modern design.”

basket vasesAfter a visit with his students to the historical bamboo-weaving village of Zhejiang in Shanzhou, Sozen founder Junjie Zhang was inspired to create modern bamboo designs. “We like to imagine how many villages, artisans, we could support if we could revitalize this art-form. So we constantly look for creative ways to integrate bamboo into products in our daily lives.” With the Basket Vase, he continues on with this mis-sion. The end product of these villag-ers’ weaving expertise and Junjie’s design is a floating bamboo cloud surrounding an internal ceramic vase, nature interwoven into art with the utmost craftsmanship.

The philosophy behind Yasi centers on the idea that “the value of arts lies in creating everyday happi-ness and beauty.” Born and raised in the porcelain capital of China, Jindazhen, the Ke sisters work with the best local designers graduated from Jingdezhen Ceramics College to bring innovative, classically-influ-enced porcelain works to daily city life. They launched their brand, Yasi, in 2009 and opened their first store in Shanghai. Strong local demand and media interest has led them to open two more stores.
