BOARD & COMMITTEE NOTES LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT:

Dear Members,

Spring is here (at least officially) and we're heading into our busiest time of the year. This month is the Spring Show. Please bring your friends and neighbors to see our show and vote on their favorite piece (probably yours). And before long, we'll have Art in the Park, the Golf Fundraiser and the Judged and Juried Show. If you haven't had a chance to volunteer for anything this past winter, please sign up to help with one of our events. Also, we can always use more hands on sprucing up the landscape. Thank you for allowing me to be part of such a vibrant group. Linda Carr, President

VICE PRESIDENT & MEMBER SERVICES: Nina Hardison & Susan Smathers “Member Services” has been busy this month with orientations.

Susan did an orientation for Linda Myers. I had orientation for

five new members; Ginney Dilk, Jim & Mary Ann Huffman and

Ellen and Mark Sebby. Please welcome these new members at

our next function.

♦ Coordinators have been notified of the newbies committee

selections. Please give them a call and share your committee

volunteer activities.

♦ Hospitality needs a coordinator to work with these committee

volunteers. Please let me know if you would like to volunteer.

♦ Kitchen Cleanup - We are getting rid of all the excess cups in

the kitchen. If you have more than one cup in the cabinet, please

take it home. Thank you members for all you do. Ninabelle

There will be a New Member Orientation for April on

Friday, April 26th

at 10AM to noon.

FINANCIAL Dawn Robb The Art Guild is “TAX EXEMPT”. This means that if you

purchase something for the Art Guild, you need to fill out a

“Tax Exempt” form because we do not pay sales tax.

So---Please do not let a vendor charge you sales tax. There are

tax exempt forms in the office. Please Use Them. It’s almost

impossible to get a vendor to reverse the sales tax if it’s been

paid. Thank you. Dawn

WAYS & MEANS Susan Midleton The Big Payback annual

giving day is returning on Thursday, May 2, and the Art

Guild is excited to take part in this monumental event.

The Big Payback, hosted by The Community Foundation of

Middle Tennessee, is a community-wide giving day that

celebrates Middle Tennessee’s spirit of generosity and supports

the life-changing work of area nonprofits. Kicking off at midnight on Thursday, May 2, the 24-hour online

giving day helps organizations, like the Art Guild, raise much-

needed funds and bring awareness to pressing needs in our

community. Since its inception in 2014, Middle Tennessee’s annual day of

giving has raised more than $9.3 million for nearly 1,000 area

nonprofits, including schools and religious institutions.

Participating organizations have received gifts from 18,806

NEW donors we may have not otherwise reached. We hope you’ll support The Art Guild at Fairfield Glade and our

mission to expand our Adult and Children’s Outreach programs

on Thursday, May 2 during The Big Payback. For the past 4

years, more than 400 youth have attended summer art classes

and art classes for homeschooled students at no charge because

of the fundraising efforts of our guild members, community

grants and sponsorships, and private donations. Over 100 senior

citizens in the past 3 years have greeted our member/instructors

each month with enthusiasm as they meet at the Fair Park Senior

Center in Crossville, TN for an afternoon of art instruction

including drawing, painting in various media, coloring, jewelry

making, and fiber arts. Public donations and state grants make

these activities possible at a very small fee for the senior

population. Without the revenue from the once a year Big

Payback event, many of these events would be reduced.

THREE WAYS TO DONATE

1. If you wish to donate by mail, please send a check, made out to Art Guild at Fairfield Glade, to The Art Guild at Fairfield Glade, 451 Lakeview Dr., Fairfield Glade, TN 38558, Attn: Treasurer-Big Payback.

2. If you wish to use a credit card, in person, for

your donation, you may come to the Art Guild, 451 Lakeview Drive, Fairfield Glade, TN on Thursday May 2 between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. where processing for the event will be available.

3. If you wish to donate directly online on May 2, visit www.TheBigPayback.org, search the organization menu for The Art Guild at Fairfield Glade, and follow the instructions on the screen for how to donate using a credit card.

For more information, contact us or visit

www.TheBigPayback.org. Thank YOU for your support!

OUTREACH COORDINATORS: ART GUILD SCHOLARSHIP: Annually, the Guild awards a graduating senior in Cumberland

County a $1,000 scholarship to pursue a degree in the arts.

Applications are currently being accepted until April 1st. The

scholarship committee will then review all entries and interview

each student, before making their final decision. The 2019

scholarship winner will be invited to the Guild's June general

meeting, to meet members and share the student’s artist plans

for the fall.

CHILDREN’S OUTREACH: Cindy Howson ● Fairfield Glade Rotary Club graciously asked me to speak at

their March meeting/ luncheon. I was able to share the amazing

work of the Children's Outreach, throughout the year. I shared a

brief description of our home school program, our yearly

summer art program and our new monthly art class for the

young men of the CCS. The Rotarians were very interested in

being a part of the children’s art outreach and will provide some

financial support, soon. ● REMINDER: SUMMER ART CLASSES

We are looking for teachers & helpers for our weekly summer

art program. Classes begin on Wednesday June 5th and will

continue through August 7th

. Time: 1:00 - 2:00 PM.

Please contact me to join the fun!

Cindy Howson, Coordinator - Children’s Outreach

● HOME SCHOOL STUDENTS: Jane Harding taught the lesson for the Children’s Home School

Class in March. 15 young artists created their own stencils and

explored the use of pastel to design beautiful artwork! Some

children loved the medium, some found it too messy (if you can

believe that!), but all were good sports and gave it a try.

● CUMBERLAND MOUNTAIN SCHOOL Jane Harding Jane Harding taught the lesson for the boys Class in March.

Five young men came with teacher, Miss Michelle & associate,

Justin. The boys learned about the color wheel, Cubism, and

Picasso. They created cubism inspired portraits with acrylic

paint. Following the painting activity, the group enjoyed mini

golf! Only one of the boys had played prior to this experience.

3 of the boys had hole-in-ones! When asked which they

preferred, painting or putting, the boys replied, “Both!” CMB April 17th

MEMBERSHIP NEWS & INFORMATION ON SATURAY MARCH 9, THE AG HELD

“HIGH SCHOOL DAY AT THE ARTGUILD”

Artists....a very big thank you for sharing your time&

talents with the young people from Crossville high school.

Their teacher, as well as the students, thoroughly enjoyed

a full day of having fun with art!

The girls were all delighted with their jewelry, and the

other group didn’t want to stop the creative results being

enjoyed with alcohol ink.

The afternoon Life Drawing was truly successful. Using

an easel for the first time was a challenge for some, but

they all tried it. Billie Faye modeled first, then their

teacher, Ginger Slate....then they all wanted to take

turns, until we ran out of time.

The smiles and laughter proved their satisfaction.

They were all hugging their projects and art supplies as

they also tried to hug us on the way out to their bus.

What a joy it was to provide this opportunity to view “a real

art gallery”, as well as “do art with real artists”!

I think we made an impression that will stay with them

for a long time. I hope we can do this again.

Could someone write a grant for this?

It was a delight to be a part of this day...

Beverly Olin

The Art Guild at Fairfield Glade is a not-for-profit 501c (3) organization and an equal opportunity provider.

Because of You...Claudia Kirkpatrick When did you join the Art Guild?

I joined in 1990.

What drew you to the guild?

The gallery. This is also why I wanted to move here.

Are you an Artist? If so, what type?

I am a painting artist in Watercolor, Pastels, Oils, Acrylic and Mixed Media.

What roles/positions have you served at the AG?

I joined and became Treasurer. I have been Vice-President and President. I have chaired the Exhibits Committee

several times, been Membership Coordinator, Finance Committee member, By-Laws Committee, etc.

I was Art Guild advisor for the Grand Opening Show for the new Art Circle Library, I was Garden Club winner

with show and reception at the Palace Theater sponsored by the Vista and have been interviewed for the Art Guild

on public TV and radio. I have chaired every show and served on some committee every year for 28 years. I have

loved every minute of it even if I was challenged and out of my comfort zone.

What ideas did you bring to the Guild that we still use?

I started the Art-i-Facts, implemented the Budget Show for 17 years and started the J & J Show.

What has been your favorite thing about the Art Guild?

Friendship, companionship and inspiration are the benefits and joy of membership. Because of You...Gloria Jean McCracken

When did you join the Art Guild?

I joined the Art Guild shortly after we moved here from Western New York State in the fall of 2003.

What drew you to the guild? I was overwhelmed by the skill level and talent of the Art Guild members who

were (are) so open to share with others.

Are you an Artist? If so, what type?

I had always puttered in arts, crafts, and photography while co-raising our

family and now here was a resource to expand my dreams. I’m a multimedia,

collage artist who sees beauty in the ordinary and extraordinary. I also use the

camera’s eye to see.

What roles/positions have you served at the AG?

I started serving the Guild as VP/ membership, wrote news articles, hosted, taught about famous artists in CCSD

art classrooms, served as Outreach Coordinator, and co-coordinator for what is now known as Creative

Development. Some of my favorite memories include working with a Girl Scout Troop on their art badge, and

bringing high school students into our brand-new facility with a lesson on Rube Goldberg.

What has been your favorite thing about the Art Guild?

My favorite thing about the Art Guild is the spirit of sharing talents and time. It’s our legacy and our future. The Executive Board will be shining the spot light on some of our long time members/leaders in 2019. The goal is to give our newer members an

opportunity to “meet” those of you that have helped to shape the Plateau Creative Arts Center in so many ways.

In the coming months, look for the “Because of You “articles in the Art-i-Facts, on our website and on the studio wall. Thanks to Al Hansen for planting

the seed to recognize this special group. Any questions, feel free to let me know. In the meantime, enjoy learning more about our history and the amazing

volunteers that make up part of the back bone of the PCAC. Pam Woodhouse
