FROM YOUR EDITOR

Our many many thanks to everyone for all the valuable information you have sent (please continue to send). Our back log of information is looking fine. This time much information is ready for space in the September issue. I am sure many of you will be glad to know about that! We now have the use of a machine, which will make a picture of the material, so if a good copy is available (dark type, and clear)it can be reproduced as is, and therefore less chance of error (less work for the Editor too). So if you have some material you want printed JUST AS IT IS, let us know. Many have expressed appreciation for the help you have received from the Queries and other articles, and since it is your Quarterly, and we are trying to help each other, we are happy, so keep the material coming. Maybe the paper shortage will soon end, but until then we will try to have near fifty pages in each issue.

Our postage is considerably reduced this time, since we are now under non profit. Anyone desiring to contribute for a tax deduction, please write for our number. Also Memorials are deposited in our Endowment Fund (for building someday).

The date has been set for ANNUAL MEETING - October 13. 1974 -this time in Little Rock, Arkansas. Please see the September issue for additional information as to time and place. Mark your calander now!

Two good friends to those in Genealogy have passed away since our last issue:

-51-YOU MIGHT LIKE TO KNOW!

Persons who wish to trace their family records in Scotland can do so through the Scots Ancestry Research Society (a non-profit organization) in Edinburgh, Scotland. You will have to write them for application blanks and their fee schedule. Their initial charge (for application) is $6. American money, per line you wish traced. Unless the maternal line is specified they normally trace the paternal line. You also will receive from the Society a small brochure telling about their operation. It will take five to six months to get your official report as you will be placed on their waiting list.

I suggest that you send all your letters to them by Airmail (it costs 21¢ per ounce, at present). And do send some International Reply Coupons to defray the Society's postage cost in answering your inquiry. Also ask them to reply via Airmail. You should get a reply to your initial inquiry in about two weeks.

I have traced part of my great-grandmother's family through the Society and am pleased with their service. ,And their fees are very reasonable, also. The correct address for the Society is:

Patricia M. Baxendine, M. A., Director SCOTS ANCESTRY RESEARCH SOCIETY 20 York Place, Edinburgh, EHl 3EP, SCOTLAND Great Britain

Accepted method of payment to the Society is by International Postal Money Order. You can get those by writing to the U. S. Post Office, Little Rock, for an applicatien blank. Tell them what country you want to send the money to. They'll send you a fee schedule (send the post office their money by U. S. Pestal money Qtder to SCOTLAND by airmail and sends you a receipt. It would be a good idea, when you receive your receipt, to write the Society and tell them the money is on the way and give them the receipt number.

COMMENT: These pages are as nearly accurate as possible and originally typed from basic source/ of U.S. Veterans Administration Records at Fort Meade, South Dakota. Army relinquished the entire grounds to Veteran Administration in 1943. This cemetery is NOT the commonly recognized National Cemeetery near Sturgis, S. D. Both cemeteries are about one mile apart.

-76-LET'S COPY A CEMETERY

By Inez E. Cline, Garland Cqunty Historian

Having located and help copy over 100 burial grounds in my County, I'd like to share with you some of the things I have learned the hard way. FIRST - GO PREPARED. Order a General Area Map of your County. from the State Highway Department. This will show you every road in the county and many of the cemeteries are already marked. A clip board gives you a good writing surface. Have plenty of paper, pencils and black-board chalk. I took scratch paper because the notes should be recopied as soon.as pOSSible, while the trip is fresh on your mind.

Use the chalk to rub across old· weathered stones to bring out the carved numbers and letters. It is very easy to mistake "Harvey" for "Harper" and other like names when one letter (or 2) makes the difference. Under "no-Chalk" conditions face powder can be used as well as dust or dirt. Rechecking my notes I once found I had a man listed as being 130 years old. Mistaking a seven for a nine. A year later I spent an hour trying to relocate the stone. Working in couples helps, as one reads the stone while the other writes the information. Giving two sets of eyes to verify hard to read stones. Use SLASH-MARKS to indicate how the epithath is written on the stone. Write the last name first followed by given name, the date and other data. Be sure to note any emblem on the stone: Masonic, Odd Fellow, religious and etc •. Example: Jones, John Anthony/ June I, 1~90/ Aug 12,1920 (Masonic emblem) Give location of cemetery. Note your milage, give name or number of highway and write directions as to how you traveled to the cemetery from the County-Seat or well known~community. From your general area map give location as to Range, ToWnship and Section. (and quarter Section if you know hOW); Date your time of visit and who accompanied you. If several ... partners work on different sections of the cemetery note p,arts copied by whom with notation "starting near gate, west side' or "part behind or West of arbor" etc. This helps in relocating. If maiden name is clearly indi-cated, enclose it with ( ) (parenthesis). For nick-names use " " (quotation marks), if .. stone·· denotes any kinship: Father, Mother, brother, etc. be sure and copy - Sometimes the word "Mother" is the only indication as to sex of: M.F. or L.J. Take time to read the verse. Once I almost missed the place of birth as it was part of the verse. Don't hesitate to use(?) if reading is in doubt. If you are able to take along someone who knows the cemetery--fine. But always put their statements in parentheses and give name of informant. With best intentions, memory is not always right. If they state an about date - prefix your date with "ca" circa thus "ca 1890" Give the name of the cemetery and all other names by which it is or has been known. List the stones as you come to them as relations are buried near each other, if not in same row, to the head or foot. Often this helps prove kinship. Something I wish I had done was to indicate nearby unmarked graves and counted them. Later facts might help identify them.

Sometime a stone is erected before a person dies - especially true with double stones, when a spouce is still living - identify this with a line thus: Jones, JOhn/1873-1953/ Mary/ 1878-____ _

LET'S 'COPY A CEMETERY (Con't page 2)

Check both sides of stone, and all four sides of larger stones. Copy funeral home markers and the name of the funeral home. These will soon rust away and be gone.

Keep in mind - some day your readings may be published. After ten years this time came for Garland County.* We took the General Area Map, folded it in half (from North to South) starting in the Eastern part, North to South, we listed the cemeteries and numbered each. This number was then placed on a hand drawn map and resulted in Volume I Eastern (202 pages). Volume II likewise fixed became Western (230 pages) and Volume III covers the city of Hot Springs Cemeteries. This Volume had a map of the city indicating cemeteries also plats of the larger cemeteries as to lots and blocks. Each Volume has a name index. A book of this nature is not worth the paper it is printed on if it is not indexed., (Another time I would like to exchange ideas as to- How to Index). EDITOR'S NOTE: * "TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTIONS of Garland County, Ark

ansas"was published by Bobbie McLane and Inez Cline. For additional information about these Volumes, please write Garland County Historical Society, 914 Summer Street, Hot Springs, Arkansas 71901

ARKANSAS DAY in STATE OF WASHINGTON - 1973 By - Mrs. Don C. Wilson, Tacoma, Washington

Former Arkansas folk in the Tacoma, Washington area gather each year for a picnic and visiting .••..

1973 August 25, eighty of us gathered in Tacoma's Point Defiance Park for a "pot luck" and for much remembering. We proudly fly an Arkansas flag from the shelter roof. We check the map to see if we can find each families' home town ~?) or county. Most of us are farm families. Those who have been 'home" during the year tell the rest(!of us about the changes. We all know tl1at the finest folk and the best cooks came out of the Ozark Mountains. We eagerly listen to the stories of our older group and in our minds eye see "nome". The youngsters tell about going to Grandpa and Grandma's. Clarksville, Johnson County has the highest representation.

We have no organization other than a list of names and each year someone volunteers to call and send "penny (?) postcards:' to each name and address. You can get on the list by contacting: Mrs. Ann Atkinson, 7521 - 56th Street East, Puyallup, Washington 98371,. (Paris, Logan County, Arkansas); Robert C. Daniel, 408 North K Street, Tacoma, Washington 98403 (Independence County, Ark.) or Mrs. Don Wilson, 3324 North 10th Street, Tacoma, Washington 98406, (South Logan County, Arkansas).

The date remains always the Saturday before Labor Day weekend. NOT the Saturday OF Labor Day Weekend.

If you are here by choice or by chance, come and join us! ***********

EDITOR'S NOTE: We would like to know of other ARKANSAS Groups, and the date and place of meetings.

QUERIES

From my earliest memory I have been frustrated by "They"o "They say ------"and the story would follow o No amount of questioning could provide the idenity of "They". Grandma had heard Aunt say that Uncle Tom often said-------.

-92-

"They" has wasted many hours of time for the genealogist, and especially the beginner, often proving such a hinderance that the project is dropped before the joy of the hunt is realized. "They said great grandfather was an officer in the civil War and was either a Major or a Captain"o The only person you can find on the official records was a Private and deserted but in all other points he seems to be your great grandfather. You will just have to accept him and realize his promotion has been made since the time he served in the Army. This is not intentional lying but is caused by the lack of attention at the time of the telling of the story and often the remembering of stories heard in childhood and distorted by childhood fancy and misunderstanding. "They said your great great grandfather owned the first store in --------." Your research will perhaps reveal the town was a thriving settlement for 50 years before your relatives came on the scene, and he started to work there as a clerk in a store or as a sweepout boy.

So many of the "They saids," of my early life concerned superstitions and folklore tales that I came to feel that "They" was altogether unreliable. I write all these stories in my notes and list the source as closely as possible but I refuse to waste my time searching for figments of the imagination unless I can find some indication that the story has some factual basis; but there is usually some basis for the story, no matter how much it has become distorted, by the telling and retelling and you may find it has been assigned to the wrong persono "Great Uncle Harry's grandmother's brother went West and was never heard from again"o You may find this was Uncle Tom's grandfather's brother.

Do not discard these stories for they add character and interest to the family story but do not allow them to stand. in the way of your recording the facts as found in proven records. In writing your family story be sure you list them as family tradition.

ARKANSAS GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY LIBRAaY

EDITOR'S NOTE: At present our ARKANSAS GElEALOGICAL SOCIETY'S BOOKEi are at home in the Camden Public Library. They have been inventoried and this will begin the list (to be continued as time and space pe~m1ts). Many books have been given from private publications, some Quarterlies have been collected on an exchange basis. It is hoped this collection can be moved after a reasonable time, to some other section of the State, and then in time moved again, so different sections may enjoy the research privilages, and in that way benetit many interested in genealogical work.
