Dear Holy Apostle Friends, I hope you will agree, it is not too far into the new year to still look at possible New Year reso- lutions (although I would expect some of you have already given up on some you made January 1 st ). While I was in Iowa at the end of December, I had a chance to talk with a Jesuit priest who shared several spiritual resolutions his congregation were suggesting for the New Year. They were: Start each day in prayer, seeking the Lords guidance, strength and wisdom. Spend time each day in the Word of God. Determine to understand what you read and hear by investing in some teaching tools, such as attending bible study or adult faith classes. Get involved in your church community by volunteering. Volunteers often say, they receive more than they give. Pray for your family, each day. Work hard at being a good example for them. Attend Mass with your children. Let them learn that attendance and participation are important. Develop a positive attitude in life knowing that God is always in charge of everything that happens, and that He has designed all things for the good of humankind. Use Jesus as your example. The popular acronym WWJD (What Would Jesus Do) is still a good question for us to use today. In every situation ask yourself – What Would Jesus Do? All the suggestions, of course, are intended to move us along the path of growing closer in our relationship with Christ. And although they are good in the aggregate, the more practical way to use them, is to select only one or two and try to be persistent with them. If you are like me, it seems much of our lives run on auto-pilot. We do the same things we did yesterday, with little thought of whether it is the best thing we can be doing, especially as it relates to the well-being of our soul. During Advent, one of the things I did to prepare for Christ s coming at Christmas was to sign up online for the Dynamic Catholic Advent series Best Advent Ever!In one of the days reflections, a statement that stuck with me was no action is neutral to the soul. Each of our actions is either moving us closer in our relationship to Christ, or moving us away. The Jesuits New Years resolutions are intended to move us closer. Much has been written recently on mindfulness. With the point being made that we need to embrace the here and now – not worrying about the future (we have no control over it) and not dwelling on successes or failures of the past (there is nothing we can undo that has been done). Live in the moment and enjoy the now - which is what Christ has given us. Father Jim Parke has been a mentor to me since Thanksgiving of 2000 when I joined Church of the Ascension. I remember one of the terms he hated to hear when he asked someone how they were, was same-ol, same-ol.If the moment was right, he would correct them and remind them that nothing is exactly the same from one minute to the next, one hour to the next, one day to the next. Things change around us and things change in us. His point was, we should look for the unique in every situation and that is where we will find Christ. This is the prayer the Jesuits left with me: A Prayer for the New Year Lord, whether I leave behind a year of joy or of trials and difficulties, I pause to give thanks. Thank you for being with me every day of every year. Thank you for making all things new and for giving me the grace of fresh starts and new beginnings. Remind me of your presence in the days to come, even when I feel pushed and rushed by busyness. Be glorified in my life this year. Amen. Happy Belated New Year, Deacon Gary

Dear Holy Apostle Friends,

I hope you will agree, it is not too far into the new year to still look at possible New Year reso-lutions (although I would expect some of you have already given up on some you made January 1st). While I was in Iowa at the end of December, I had a chance to talk with a Jesuit priest who shared several spiritual resolutions his congregation were suggesting for the New Year. They were:

Start each day in prayer, seeking the Lord’s guidance, strength and wisdom.

During Advent, one of the things I did to prepare for Christ’s coming at Christmas was to sign up online for the Dynamic Catholic Advent series “Best Advent Ever!” In one of the day’s reflections, a statement that stuck with me was “no action is neutral to the soul.” Each of our actions is either moving us closer in our relationship to Christ, or moving us away. The Jesuit’s New Year’s resolutions are intended to move us closer.

I remember one of the terms he hated to hear when he asked someone how they were, was “same-ol, same-ol.” If the moment was right, he would correct them and remind them that nothing is exactly the same from one minute to the next, one hour to the next, one day to the next. Clergy Abuse

Bishop Knestout encourages anyone aware of sexual abuse of minors on the part of clergy of staff of our diocese

to notify civil authorities, call the Attorney General’s Clergy Abuse Hotline at 1-833454-9064 and reach out to Dioc-

esan Victim Assistance Coordinator, Jennifer Sloan at 1-877-887-9603.

Highlights from Vestry Council Meeting 14th January 2019 Finance Council reported a large negative overall balance for 2018. This was expected because of two capital

improvement projects (new sanctuary lights and new outdoor sign). These projects were financed using Capi-tal Improvement funds. Otherwise, there would have been a small negative balance for the year.

There was an increase in donations to the Discretionary Fund in 2018 (attributed to an increasing awareness of the fund and the September promotional event).

Part of the 2018 Revised Tax Law, for those over 70½ years, who are required to take a minimum distribution on their IRA or other tax-deferred account, can direct the withdrawal to a non-profit organization and still de-duct the donation from their taxes, even if they are taking the standard deduction. Additional information will be provided to members.

Approval was given to issue a check of $1,900 for The Roofing Company. It will act as supervisor for HA roof-ing project. The fee will cover writing the proposal, making sure all the bids meet the specifications requested, ensuring all work is done correctly and the work is inspected by the manufacturer so all warrantees are cov-ered.

The Discernment Team will meet with VC on January 23rd

at 6 pm for a presentation of their choice for Episco-pal co-pastor. A VC meeting will follow to discuss options and the next steps, led by Elise Balcom (diocesan consultant)

V/C approved Charlie Mills to serve as one of our two delegates at the Diocesan Council at its February meet-ing (Dona Mitchell is the other).

The yard and craft sale is still planned for spring and the event will be advertised as the date gets closer.

Dianne is in the process of summarizing the time and talent sheets. Once that is complete names will be sent to committee heads and a meeting date will be set for those who signed up to welcome newcomers.

A previous proposal had been made and was approved to upgrade our phone and internet service. After fur-ther consideration, it was determined both are adequate at the present time.

Father Rene updated the VC on the Richmond Diocese’s deanery model. HA is included in Deanery 2 (most of the parishes in Virginia Beach). The priests of the deanery meet monthly and staffs meet quarterly. The first staff meeting will be held at St. Gregory’s on Wednesday, January 30

th. Those attending include:

Steve Stanley Mike Meehan Kay Ashby Jackie Lucas Cliff Hatt Fr. René Dc. Gary Dianne Marzec Bob Martin

Msgr Joe Lehman has suggested that HA consider hosting the next state-wide LARCUM Conference sched-uled for Friday/Saturday, November 15/16. Ongoing dialogue is in progress.

We are a vibrant community with a strong future!

Gracious Father, we pray for your holy catholic Church. Fill it with all truth, in all truth with all peace. Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in any thing it is amiss, reform it. Where it is right, strengthen it; where it is in want, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake of Jesus Christ your Son our Savior. Amen. - BCP

‘Our own Christian tradition becomes so much more alive to us when we have to explain it to someone who loves us. Entering

into another tradition, lived by someone we love, becomes a great enrichment. We realize that to be different is not necessarily

to be wrong; that when differences can be lived together in unity we discover a completely new dimension in our lives as Chris-

tians.’ Ruth Reardon in "Past and Future”. Provided by Jean Koch

Due to recent tax law changes, many will not be itemizing deductions any longer. Yet, some can still get a deduction from their IRA withdrawals. Over age 70 ½ Required Minimum Distributions (RMD) can be given directly to a church or charity, and not be counted as income, in effect, an income tax deduction. Speak to your tax advisor about this Qualified Charita-ble Deduction that may be available for you, and have some of your Holy Apostles pledged giving still deliver some in-come tax relief! See any member of the Finance Council for more information.

Manna Sunday on February 3rd

Sunday, February 3rd is Manna Sunday. The Manna Pantry is particularly in need of peanut butter and jelly, canned meats, canned fruits, Hamburger/Tuna helper, taco kits, cereal, breakfast bars, pasta, and pasta sauce. We don't need any canned vegetables at this time...thanks to the Montessori School and the Girl Scouts. Please help restock our Manna pantry. Please bring items that you enjoy eating. Check expiration dates. We will only stock items that have not expired. We appreciate your support.

Church of the Holy Apostles supports the City of Virginia Beach Food Pantry Assistance Program. We assist the most vulnerable citizens with the basic need for food. The city refers families to our Manna Pantry each month. We provide each family with meat, cheese, butter, a Food Lion gift card, and plenty of food staples to last a week.

Social Ministry News

Update on the Mayom Family (January 2019). William and Mary Kay Mayom send their best wishes for the New Year. All 5 children (yes that’s 5—Ajok made his debut in December 2018) are doing well. Ajok was named after Mary Kay’s father. Deng (oldest) attends Blair Middle School and he continues to excel in his studies. Mayom (next oldest) is in school at Granby Elementary. The name of the game for both boys is Soccer; both can run very fast and both play well. The older girl (Yar) loves to be in school and is in Preschool. She is a fast learner, very inquisitive, and very talka-tive. Ayen (next girl) is keeping up with her siblings and very active. Their new baby boy, Ajok, is healthy and happy (according to William). They are active members of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Norfolk. William continues to work as a Certified Nursing Assistant at DePaul Hospital in Norfolk and Mary Kay took courses to become a Certified Home Care Assistant and she keeps busy with her clients. They are very thankful for their healthy family and are so ap-preciative of our continued support. Please continue to pray for this special family and for their homeland—South Sudan.

SAVE THE DATE: Saturday, February 23 from 10 am to 12 noon at Virginia United Methodist Church, 212 19th Street, VB will be the organizational launch of The Open Table Ministry. This ministry helps people achieve a sustainable way out of poverty. See Lynne Graham or Teresa Stanley for more information.

The Open Table Ministry

Cultivating Nonviolence-Harvesting Peace, a new resource from JustFaith Ministries, invites participants to formulate a personal response, inspired by their Christian beliefs, to the reality of violence within ourselves, our community, and our world. This 8 week program explores some of the central questions related to nonviolent responses to violence. The ses-sions provide historical, biblical, and theological perspective and suggest ways participants can take faithful action for God’s people. The program will be at Church of the Holy Apostles on Monday evenings from 6-8:30 pm, beginning February 25. For more information or to register, contact Kathy Early [email protected] or Teresa Stanley.
