HAPPY 147TH BIRTHDAY, CANADA!!! CANADIAN HISTORY IN A

NUTSHELL The name ''Canada'' is de-rived from a St. Lawrence Iroquoian word meaning "village" or "settlement". In 1535, inhabitants of the present-day Quebec City re-gion used the word to direct explorer Jacques Cartier to-ward the village of Sta-dacona. However, Cartier's "Canada" referred to not only the village, but to the entire area subject to Don-nacona, Chief at Stadacona. By 1545, European books and maps accepted this re-gion as Canada. The French colony of Can-ada referred to the part of New France along the Saint Lawrence River and the northern shores of the Great

Lakes. Later, it was split into two British colonies, called Upper Canada and Lower Canada until their union as the British Province of Canada in 1841. Upon Confederation in 1867, the name ''Canada'' was adopted for the entire country, and was often referred to as the ''Dominion of Canada'' until the 1950s. As Canada claimed its political autonomy from Britain, the federal government started using ''Canada'' on legal state documents and treaties. The Canada Act 1982 refers only to "Canada" and, as such, it is currently the only legal (and bilingual) name. This was re-flected in 1982 when the national holiday was renamed from Dominion Day to Canada Day.

 As Vancouver was hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics, here are some of the real questions asked by peo-ple from all over the world. The answers are the ones we would have liked to have given, but, because we are Canadians, we were too polite to do so!

Q: Will I be able to see Polar Bears in the street? (USA)

A. It depends on how much you’ve been drinking.

Q. I want to walk from Vancouver to Toronto. Can I follow the Railroad tracks? (Sweden)

A. Sure, it’s only 4000 miles. Take lots of water.

Q. Can you give me some information about hippo racing in Canada? (USA)

A. A-fri-ca is the giant triangle shaped continent south of Europe. Ca-na-da is that big country to your North...oh, forget it. Sure, the hippo racing is every Tuesday night in Calgary. Come naked.

Q. Which direction is North in Canada? (USA)

A. Face South and turn 180 degrees. Contact us when you get here and we’ll give you the rest of the directions.

Q. Do you have perfume in Canada? (Germany)

A. No, WE don’t stink!

Q. Are there supermarkets in Toronto and is milk available all year round? (Germany)

A. No, we are a peaceful civilization of Vegan hunters/gatherers. Milk is illegal.

Q. I have never seen it warm on Canadian TV, so how do the plants grow? (England)

A. We import all our plants fully grown and the just sit around and watch them die.

Canada consists of ten provinces and three territories British Columbia, Alberta, Sas-katchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland & Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Yukon Territory, Northwest territory and Nunavut. Located in the northern part of the continent, it extends from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west, and northward into the Arctic Ocean. Canada is the world's second-largest country by total area, and its common border with the United States is the world's longest land bor-der.

The land that is now Canada has been inhabited for millennia by various Aboriginal peoples. Begin-ning in the late 15th century, British and French colonial expeditions explored, and later settled, the region's Atlantic coast. France ceded nearly all of its colonies in North America in 1763 after the Seven Years' War. In 1867, with the union of three British North American colonies through Confed-eration, Canada was formed as a federal dominion of four provinces. This began an accretion of provinces and territories and a process of increasing autonomy, culminating in the Canada Act 1982.

Canada is a federal state governed as a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. The country is officially bilingual at the federal level. As of 2011, it has a population of approximately 33.4 million. Canada's economy is one of the world's largest and is reliant upon its natural resources and trade, particularly with the United States with

which it also has a long and complex relationship. Per capita income is the world's ninth highest. It is a member of the G7, G8, G20, NATO, OECD, WTO, Commonwealth of Nations, Francophonie, OAS, APEC, and United Nations. In other words, without prejudice or doubt, Canada is the best place on earth!!

Did you know?

We have a master fire plan for Arbourside Court. It contains pages and pages of technical data and outlines what we do to prevent fires and how to respond in the unlikely event that we have one.

Of course you as tenants do not have to know all the details con-tained therein; nevertheless, it behooves us all to be familiar with what to do in the case of an alarm or a real fire.

Start by finding your nearest exit staircase (we have two) and ex-amining where it exits to. Either are potential escapes. Next, read the posted notice by the elevators. This will tell you how to re-spond to alarms and/or fires. NEVER USE THE ELEVATORS WHEN THE GENERAL FIRE ALARM IS SOUNDING.

Third, ask questions. I am always happy to answer safety related questions and if I don’t know the answer I’ll do my best to find out.

Over the summer months and into the fall we will be testing the fire alarms monthly. I will provide notice before we conduct these tests and they will be very short in duration.

Let’s all pay close attention to this subject and ensure that we stay safe.

July promises to be a quieter month than June as we have completed our annual maintenance tasks such as balcony cleaning, window washing, and blind cleaning.

What are your reflections on warm summer evenings? I was lucky enough to be a city dweller with a cottage to escape to. I can re-member the humidity rising and storms forming down the lake. You could see them approaching from the south for ten miles. The pour-ing rain was a relief from the heat and caused the pine trees to emit their trademark scent.

Summer is a time when many of our employees take their annual vacations. Please welcome their replacements as they strive to serve you in the same friendly way you’re used to. Remember that they m not be familiar with your special requests and you may have to guide them along.
