Introduction

• Drones are more formally known asUnmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).

• It is a flying robot that can be remotelycontrolled or fly autonomously throughsoftware-controlled flight plans in theirembedded systems, working in conjunctionwith onboard sensors and GPS.

• Operated without a human pilot on board.• The use of Drone technology in the

transport space is gaining traction.• Asset management is key on large-

infrastructure projects


Background: The Gautrain Drone Project

• The Gautrain Drone technology project was conceived in 2018 and obtainedapproval in 2019.

• Traditionally, the GMA used to rely on traditional aerial surveys.• Two traditional aerial surveys were conducted in 2012 & 2017.• Gautrain moved from traditional aerial surveys to UAV surveys in order to enable

faster and more efficient decision-making processes based on latest spatialrepresentation.

• To monitor and manage the Gautrain rail reserve, transport facilities and assets using mapping technology on a continuous basis.
