Academia in EducationAt Academia we understand that the educational landscape is changing. The truth is that many of today’s students will go into jobs that don’t exist yet. So how do we best prepare them for the future?

The answer for many institutions is creating a learning environment that is engaging, flexible and individual to every learner, and most have done this by incorporating technology into every aspect of the classroom.

At Academia we have helped schools, colleges and universities across the UK achieve their vision for learning using technology. For twelve years we have worked with institutions to create a vision and plan for long-term change, looking to impact the learning outcomes for every student. We know that it’s important to have a partner that has the technical expertise to deploy and manage devices, train teachers to use the technology to enhance their existing practice and help build a model that is sustainable for the future.

Technology is allowing students and educators to collaborate like never before, and this is just the beginning. See how institutions right now are doing it, visit edu.academia.co.uk

Let Academia be your education partner and help you achieve your goals.

Swift PlaygroundsSwift is the coding language Apple has created and is used by most developers building apps for Apple’s iOS and OS. Swift Playgrounds is an app designed to take this coding language and teach it to children. Apple has built a scheme of work right into the app plus a set of challenges that learners can make their way through, in their own time. Also, with Apple’s unique ability to make content user-friendly and intuitive, students are making code from the minute they start a lesson or challenge.

If coding is not your thing, don’t worry. Apple has created great resources in the iBooks Store (Swift Playgrounds Teacher Guide) that are free and guide you through everything you need to know to teach using Swift Playgrounds.

iTunes UAvailable for free from the App Store, iTunes U is your one-stop-shop for:

• building lessons • collecting and marking• collaborating with students

Building lessons can be as simple as importing all your preferred teaching materials including worksheets, photos, and videos into iTunes U and creating a project. If you want to go further, you can include apps with relevant content, iBooks that cover some of the aspects you are teaching, podcasts from students in institutions worldwide or resources created in iTunes U. The options are endless.

Collecting and marking work that has been created using various media types (podcast, pages, keynote, video) was a complex task previously. Now you can let students create work in a way that is easiest for them and collect it in one place; iTunes U. Built-in annotation tools mean that PDFs can be marked up quickly and easily, plus Grade Book lets you keep track of everyone’s progress.

Collaborating with students is made even easier with iTunes U. Students can ask questions directly and in private via iTunes U either while in the class or long after the bell has rung. This means that learning can continue without students having to wait until the next class to ask their question. You can also set questions for the whole class to input into, meaning that even the quietest student can give their opinion. Also, everyone can be kept up to date with push notifications direct to his or her iPad so he or she and you will not miss a thing.

What’s new for Apple in education?iOS 10 features many enhancements which have enabled network managers, IT administrators and teachers to set-up and manage iPad more easily than ever before.

Important iOS updates for education:

• Shared iPad• Classroom app for iPad• Apple School Manager• Managed Apple IDs Shared iPad offers an easier solution than previously if one-to-one student-to-iPad is not possible. Students can find their iPad using their photo (or initials), and log-in with their Managed Apple ID. This iPad is then theirs for the duration they are logged-in. They can create and collaborate, and in the background data is being saved locally or to the cloud (depending on set-up). When the lesson finishes, the student logs off, and the iPad is ready for the next student.

Classroom app for iPad enables teachers to have a bird’s eye view of their whole class and what students are individually working on. Classroom allows teachers to open apps, books or websites for the entire class or a group of students, keeping everyone on task. Teachers can even lock students into one app or a specific book if the temptation to go off course is too strong.

Apple School Manager has made deployment of iPad even easier. Now everyone (teachers, students, managers), all Apple devices, and all content (apps, books, iTunes U) can be managed in the same place.

Managed Apple IDs have been specifically developed for education. A managed ID works the same as an Apple ID but is created by an institution when they are setting up their iPad. Used in conjunction with Apple School Manager you can reset passwords, set limitations on purchases, and assign roles to everyone, making iPad simpler to deploy and easier to manage at the institution level.

The iPad has enabled a learning revolution. Why? Because students and teachers, love it. Learners find it quick and easy to use, with access to thousands of apps, books and courses so they can learn in their own way. Educators can create lessons that simply haven’t been possible before, collaborating with students and peers to make teachings more engaging, and preparing students for the workplace.

Teach differently with iPad Explaining the water cycle

Part One - The ExplanationConnect your iPad via Apple TV and begin the lesson with a quick video about the water cycle you found on YouTube.Using Nearpod (a free app from the App Store that lets you create and share interactive content with students) create a live session to deliver a PowerPoint presentation you created that is animated.Students use their iPad to access the Nearpod app and your presentation.Guide students through the presentation asking questions, taking polls and filling in the blanks, all with Nearpod.

Part Two - The TaskOpen Explain Everything (a purchasable app from the App Store that lets students and teachers create videos, record, annotate and share ideas) and connect to Apple TV.Demonstrate the use of Explain Everything to mind map, research and present the students findings within the app.Students work in pairs to create a slideshow in Explain Everything using different tools such as video, animations, voice-over and embedding web content.Students then present back their slideshow via Apple TV to the group.

Part Three - HomeworkOpen iTunes U and show students the lesson you have created - share the access code.Assign homework - to continue working on and complete research of the water cycle.Students can collaborate with each other, ask questions and post their homework in iTunes U.You can annotate and give feedback on all homework and discussions.Students can tick off this homework once handed in as complete and preview what lesson is next.

Our trainers can help you develop and deliver lessons just like this one. Get in touch at [email protected] to find out more.

Primary school

“Using iPads in the classroom has really changed the traditional Primary one classroom. The children are so much more motivated; they focus for longer periods of time and are learning to persevere with tasks. I feel that we are providing these children with the perfect opportunity to empower them in this mobile society.”

Lorraine Cheadle, Primary One Teacher and ICT Coordinator, Oliver Plunkett.

Apple technology is used at every level of education. Read here from some of the institutions we have worked with and hear their reactions to teaching with iPad.

Secondary school

“I think the real revolution comes when you embrace the kind of technology that iPad brings. And I think in some ways that’s going to be a real challenge to teachers.” Steve Allen, Principal, de Ferrers Academy.

University

“Giving each student an iPad has made a huge difference; it is clear that students are far more engaged, the classroom is a livelier place and more interesting and interactive.”

Phil Trowga, Digital Education Coordinator, University of Westminster.

9 StepsMake sure you are on track to deliver on your vision and plan. Use our nine-point checklist to ensure you have the basics covered.

1. VISIONDefine a clear vision showing how you want to transform your teaching and learning at the beginning. Ask yourself, ‘Why change?’

2. PROGRAMME TEAM Assemble a Leadership Team who will own, plan and implement all future learning initiatives.

3. COMMUNITYEngage the local community as well as stakeholders, parents and the student body. Support for your vision is essential to its success.

4. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTModel and support a culture of ongoing professional development for your staff. CPD is essential for the success of long-term transformational change.

5. STUDENT EMPOWERMENTStudents should be involved and contributing as co-creators from day one. Good ideas do not just come from you or your staff.

6. MEASURING SUCCESSEstablish ways to measure your progress. For example, on day one establish where you are and re-evaluate at day one hundred (you can choose your timeline). Have you seen improvements? What are the issues? What are the unexpected learnings? Keep repeating this exercise over and over.

7. IT CONSIDERATIONUnderstand your infrastructure, management, workflow processes and classrooms today, and how they might need to change to further support teaching and learning with an iPad.

8. SUSTAINABILITYIdentify the expected costs and possible savings over a period to ensure the long-term viability of this initiative.

9. PARTNERSHIPAs an Apple Solution Expert for education, Academia can help you with all of the above and more. Check out edu.academia.co.uk or call us on 01992 703900 for more information.
