DEDICATION

Dr. W illiam C. " B i l l” Hopkins was a man not

easily forgotten. During his tw elve years on the

faculty here at LSU, B ill Hopkins le ft his mark. In

an age which popularized m etals, plastics and glass.

Dr. Hopkins worked to prove the usefulness of wood.

He expressed the b e lie f , through lectures, scholarly

articles and laboratory work, that wood, properly pro

cessed, m erited comparsion with stee l and masonry

as a construction m ateria l. While at LSU, Dr. Hopkins

taught advanced studies in wood utiliztion and performed

extensive research in wood utilization projects.

Dr. Hopkins, a native of Erlanger, Kentucky, re

ceived his B.A. degree from the University of C incin

nati, and his m aster’s and doctorate from Y a le . His

early career was spent working in forest m anagem ent,

pulpwood procurem ent and forest u tilization research.

D r. Hopkins was an associate forester at Mississippi

S ta te University before joining the LSU faculty as

associate professor. At the tim e of his death, Dr.

Hopkins was serving a three-year term on the executive

board of the Forest Products Research Society and was

a mem ber of the S o cie ty ’s Employment C om m ittee.

A number of organizations were privileged to have

D r. Hopkins as an active m em ber. These included the

Society of A m erican Foresters, Forest Products Research

So ciety , Louisiana Forestry Association, Society of Wood

S cien ce and Technology, LSU chapter of Sigm a X I,

and the Au-Dux Hunting Club. Publications to his

cred it include more than 30 articles dealing with

topics in the fields of wood preservation, wood season

ing and wood finishing. _

Also a ctiv e in c iv ic and church affairs, Dr. Hop

kins was an elder of the University Presbyterian Church,

where he taught a Sunday School class, and served

as an institutional representative for the Boy Scouts of

A m erica and Scoutm aster of Troop 52.

Those who knew him best w ill not rem em ber him

as a mem ber of any of the numerous organizations to

which he belonged. He w ill be best rem em bered as

an outstanding person and friend o f the students. Men

o f B ill Hopkins’ ca lib er cannot be replaced . His

mem ory w ill b e cherished and long-lived in the

School of Forestry and W ildlife M anagem ent.

With great pride, we the members of the staff

d ed icate this 1968 edition of the Annual Ring to

the memory of our beloved Dr. Hopkins.

FORESTER'S LAMENT

The chiggers chew m e a ll the day, Mosquitos all the night. No m atter how I scratch or swat, There's s till another b ite .

Where others see a shady nook,I find a m illion ticks. And, if I pause to rest me there,Each one into me sticks

A probing prong to bleed me white. The while I rant and rave,And dig and scratch and curse the day That I becam e a slave

To Forestry - the old skin game Where, every day and night,My aching, burning, itching pelt Feeds some bug's appetite!

THE DIRECTOR S MESSAGE

In the United States, there are now about 50 schools of forestry. F all enrollm ent in these schools in 1966 totaled11 ,118 undergraduates, o f which 7 ,000 w ere in general forestry; the rem ainder were distributed among w ildlife m anagem ent, range* m anagem ent, forest recreation , and wood technology. Some of the important trends in undergraduateforestry education are:

1 . Steady increase in enrollm ent since the post-w ar low of 4 ,6 9 1 students in 1952.

2 . Increase in number of forestry schools. Also, increase in number of schools accredited by the Society of A m erican Foresters (25 in 1952, 32 in 1967).

3 . Expansion of physical fa c ilitie s , including new buildings.

4 . Increase in number and education level of faculty mem bers and decrease in average teaching load.

5 . More options and hew curricula, including areas such as forest recreation , w ild life m anagem ent, and a forest science curriculum for students going on to graduate school.

6 . Curricula content more basic, more flex ib le , broader, m ore m ath and scien ce and fewer credits in forestry.

7. Less emphasis on h o w -to -d o -it instruction and more on basic principles; more on m ultiple-use forestry.

8 . More transfer students from junior colleges and from colleges where forestry is not offered.

9. Rapid increase in one- and tw o-year forestry tech nician schools, particularly in the far West.

ALUMNUS-OF-THE-YEAR AWARDPresented by the Faculty

S chool o f Forestry & W ildlife M anagem ent

Mr. Jeff D. Hughes, Jr. is the recip ient o f the current A lu m nus o f the Year Award. He graduated in Forestry in 1949, and is an active m em ber o f the LSU Forestry & W ild life M anagem ent Alum ni A ssociation .

Mr. Hughes is em ployed as District M anager by the Crown Z ellerbach Corporation. He serves on the Board o f Directors for the Louisiana Forestry Association and as Chairman o f the State Tree Farm C om m ittee, Louisiana Forestry Association . He is on the execu tive com m ittee o f the G ulf State Section o f the Society o f A m erican Foresters and is also an active m em ber o f the Southeast Louisiana group o f the state Chapter.

His hom e is in Denham Springs, Louisiana, where he is a m em ber o f the Chamber o f C om m erce and President o f the D enham Springs Rotary Club. In 1966, Mr. Hughes was chairm an o f the Livingston Parish United Givers Fund. He also coaches a Little League baseball team for the Denham Springs Parks and R ecreation C om m ision .

Mr. Hughes has written the fo llow in g article for the Annual Ring:

Foresters throughout the United States are becom ing increasingly aware that they are being faced with tremendous pressures for other uses for lands now classified as forest lands. Each passing year sees additional a cre age being perm anently transferred to such uses as roadways, utility righ ts-o f-w ay, industrial sites, h om e-sites, schools, and recreational areas that are non-forest oriented. Coupled with this is the fa ct that in many areas real estate values, due to this ever increasing dem and for land, have increased to such a point that many land owners are decid in g that they cannot afford to grow tim ber on their land and are instead reaching for the qu ick er financial returns to be gained through other uses.

Assuming that the basic reason for this increasing demand for other uses o f land is due to our ever expanding population , the long range forecast is even m ore disheartening. It is conservatively estim ated that, during the next decad e , som ething over 3 ,0 0 0 ,0 0 0 people w ill be added, net, to the population each year. By 1980 there w ill be in excess o f 2 3 5 ,0 0 0 ,0 0 0 Am ericans, com pared with today's approxim ately 2 0 0 ,0 0 0 ,0 0 0 .

Year by year the nation's cities are expanding. Their boundries w ill u ltim ately converge, form ing what w ill be known in the future as a "m e g a lo p o lis " . It has been predicted that such a m egalopolis w ill cover nearly the entire G ulf Coast region , stretching from the area o f Houston, Texas, to near Pensacola, Florida. Think o f the tremendous number o f people that w ill live in this area, and o f the vast land areas which w ill be converted from forest land to sites for industrial plants, hom es, and recreation areas.

Page 67: The Annual Ring 1968 - LSU Digital Commons

Alm ost daily in our newspapers and m agazines we com e upon the term "land re form ". It is usually in co n nection with the breaking down o f large estates in Central A frica , or in South A m erica . Do not for a minute think that we here in the United States are im m une. Already several states have considered legislation that would lim it the acreage that could be held by one owner. Fortunately, such acts have fa iled to pass, and doubt has been cast on their constitutionality. But what do you think is going to happen i f an ill inform ed m ega lop o lis - controlled society decides that its needs for land is a ll im portant, and, as is already the case, a socia listica lly inclined Supreme Court bases its interpretation o f the Constitution upon changing public opinion rather than upon the wording? Can forestry survive the population explosion?

The crux o f the matter is this. When the tim e for decision com es, w ill foresters be in a position to be heard, with opinions that w ill bear w eight? W ill our profession be recognized as one which can be depended upon to m ake mature recom m endations, based upon knowledge and understanding, for the ben efit o f our country, or w ill it be regarded as a w ell m eaning but inept group o f ou tdoor-m inded provincials?

I be lieve that there are several ways in w hich the present day forester can prepare h im self for the com ing ba ttle . First and forem ost, he should strive to im prove his im age as a professional m an. There is one easy way to be recognized as a professional - that is to act like on e . No am ount o f legislation or registration is going to im prove our professional status in the eyes o f the p u b lic. We are judged in three ways - by our actions, by our appearance, and by the com pany we keep. A forester should be a leader in his com m unity , taking part in c iv ic and p o lit ica l affairs. With particular reference to the latter, we should not hide our heads in the sand, but should open ly support public o ffic ia ls who w ill return support to us when the Occasion dem ands. A forester should d e mand adequate com pensation for his services, and should do everything possible to discourage the prevailing b e l ie f that ad vice or other services from a forester are free for the asking. As to appearance, we a ll rea lize that foresters have a certain amount o f field work to do, and that only field cloth ing is appropriate for this. We are o f necessity at tim es both dirty and briar torn. This can be com pensated for by being extrem ely careful o f our attire when making public appearances. A forester who has on many occasions m ade public addresses, and whom I admire greatly , on ce told m e that when m aking a public appearance he always planned to be as w ell dressed as the best dressed man in the audience. This is the mark o f a professional m an.

A forester should enhance his position by continuing his education throughout his career. The earning o f a degree should be considered as a high point only in his form al education , while his in form al education should have no end. The forester who accepts em ploym ent o f a h a lf professional, h a lf tech n ica l nature, and who re mains there because he likes the outdoor nature o f the work, or doesn 't want to change his liv ing loca tion , or has failed to keep h im self abreast o f modern developm ents and techniques, may be satisfying his living requirements, but he is doing an injustice to h im self and to his profession. I know that we cannot a ll be V ice -P residents, or State Foresters, or Departm ent D irectors, but who would deny that every forester should be preparing h im self for the day when he m ight have the opportunity o f holding an im portant jo b . And w ell qu alified , w ell respected people in important positions is what we w ill need when the tim e o f decision arrives.

Last, but not least, a forester can insure the survival o f his profession by organizing. B ecom e a m em ber o f the L. S. U. School o f Forestry and W ild life M anagem ent Alum ni A ssociation , o f your State Forestry Association , and o f the Society o f A m erican Foresters. How many tim es have I heard a forester say "I d on 't belong to the L. F. A . because they haven 't ever helped m e, or I don 't belong to the S .A .F . because I ca n 't afford t o . " These people had better wake up before it 's too la te . The truth o f the m atter is that these and other organizations have sponsored and advanced programs that have been o f m ajor e co n o m ic im portance, and that have literally helped create em p loym ent and raise salaries o f foresters. "C an 't afford to ” should b e co m e "c a n 't afford not to".

T im e and tim e again it has been proven that in our d em ocratic form o f governm ent, whenever con flictin g interests must be debated and decided upon, it is always the w ell organized , w e ll staffed, and w ell financed side that carries the day. The v o ice o f a few foresters, crying in the wilderness, w ill not be heard.

The forester who contributes to the prestige o f his profession by the way he carries out his da ily work, who contributes to the w elfare o f his com m unity , who keeps h im self abreast o f the ever changing tech n o log ica l age in which we liv e , who continues his education throughout his career, and who active ly belongs to an contributes to organizations which w ill represent him before the higher levels o f our governm ent - This is the forester who w ill be doing his share to determ ine that forestry w ill survive the population explosion .

Georgia-Pacific shouts “timber-r-r in the Amazon jungle.

The native skillfully guides the raft of virola logs along the narrow, twisting jungle stream. D estination: the storage pond of Georgia-Pacific’s veneer plant at Portel, Brazil, near the mouth of the Amazon River. Here the valuable logs are peeled into wafer- thin sheets of wood, which are shipped to our Savannah, Georgia, hardwood plywood operations. Finally, the veneers beautify homes and offices all over America and the world in Georgia-Pacific’s decorative hardwood paneling.

P hilipp ine Tim ber, TooT he South American logs come from our 640,000 acres of timber- land in the dense Brazilian jungle . . . source of a t least 5 billion board feet of Georgia-Pacific timber. Halfway across the world in the Philippines, we have cutting rights on approximately 2 billion board feet of lauan, known as Philippine mahogany. Some of our Philippine logs are sold in Taiwan, Jap an , Korea and other Asian countries. Veneers from other logs are used to make decorative paneling by Georgia-Pacific in Eugene, Oregon.

3 5 B illion B oard Feet S u p p lyIn all,we own or control 35 billion board feet of tim ber around the world. I t is managed on a sustained yield basis to insure sufficient supply for tomorrow’s needs . . . an important factor in our planning. The U.S. Forest Service expects domestic demand for products from wood to double by the end of the century. Developm ent of overseas tim ber sources to augment our growing domestic supply is another example of how Georgia-Pacific continues to live up to its reputation as the Growth Company.

Some foresters just don’t look like they used to!

But they aren’t what they used to be, either.

The industrial forester has come a long way since his only job was “preventing fires and logging the mill.”

Today, he is moving on to greater responsibilities and more demanding jobs. The key has been education. In fact, at International Paper Company we have more than 325 graduate foresters in the South, some holding M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.

In addition to planting, growing, protecting and harvesting trees, I-P ’s modern foresters are involved in the purchase and sale of land and timber, wood procurement, labor relations, wildlife management, public relations, recreational development, conservation, administration, research, and the use of computers.

No, the modem forester doesn’t look like he used to. But, as we said, he isn’t what most people think he is either.
