Dear Members,

Can you believe it’s 2012 already? With the busy holiday season

behind us, it’s time for all of us to focus on ourselves. By partici-

ment but you have fun doing it. I have served on several committees

throughout the years and have seen the positive effects we have on

each other and the industry as a whole.

We have several committees that need your help. Some committees need less time devoted than

others, but no matter what role you play, it is vital that you are involved even if it is just making a

phone call or two.

Our committees include:

• Emerging Professional • CEUs/Programs

• Chapter Recognition Awards • IP Lunch & Learn

• Foundation • STEP/NCIDQ

• Sponsorships • Speakers

• Legislative • Design Awards

• Membership • PR/Marketing

• Hospitality • Directory

• Peer Groups • Newsletter

• Community Involvement • Social Media (Facebook/Twitter)

• Big Ticket Gala •Website

• Showhouse • Scholarships

• Green • Social Events

• Continuing Education • Student Affairs

We will be sending out an email with a sign-up form and have also enclosed one in the newsletter.

Can’t decide which one? Pick a few!

Sincerely,

What is the ASID Foundation?By Barbara Schlattman

Do you know the difference between ASID and the ASID Foundation?

Your membership dues provide ASID programs such as education, marketing, the right to practice and more. The ASID Foundation supportsendeavors that further knowledge, innovation, and benefits to the publicthrough interior design. This is done through funding research, scholar-ships, and education.

The ASID Foundation has been a major supporter of:• Scholarships• Evidence-Based Design for Residential Environments• Materials Research Collaborative, a project of the Healthy BuildingNetwork

• Veteran’s Housing Initiative of Rebuilding Together• REGREEN, in collaboration with the US Green Building CouncilCouncil for Interior Design Accreditation’s Future Vision andCollaborative Strategies

• The Green House – exhibit at the National Building Museum

These projects would not have happened without your support of theFoundation. New research is continuously available and your dollars makethis happen.

How to donate? Most of our donations come frommembers who donateannually or pledge over several years. Another way is through the LegacySociety – giving through your will.

For more information, visit our website: www.asidfoundation.orgCall Valerie O’Keefe: 202-546-3480 Or locally, contact your local ASIDFoundation Board members: Barbara Schlattman, FASID([email protected]) & Donna Vining, FASID([email protected])

TEXAS GULF COAST CHAPTER | WINTER 2011 | 17

Ellouise Abbot AwardI have been asked to give a little background on theEllouise Abbott Award and about Ellouise Abbottherself. The first award was given after her deathalmost thirty years ago. It was decided that thisaward was not to be taken lightly, and would onlybe given, when we have an Industry Partner whohad devoted years of outstanding service to ourchapter. It was to be the highest honor that ourchapter can bestow upon an Industry Partner at thelocal level.

Ellouise Abbott opened a small fabric showroom, ina little run down house on Alabama, over fifty yearsago. She quickly became known as the queen offabrics in the gulf coast area. She had the exclusiverights to sell many of the finest fabric lines in theworld. Her showroomwas truly a “to the tradeonly” showroom. She protected the interiordesigner, by refusing to sell anyone exceptdesigners. To purchase from her showroom, youmust have been approved by Ellouise herself. To dothis, you had to furnish extensive information andcredentials, and endure an interview with Ellouise. It was not easy, but once approved, you had accessto fabrics, that other designers were not allowed topurchase. She called it snob appeal and it worked.

In 1989 a fountain was built in her honor at the Decorative Center ofHouston. Ellouise was quick to point out that only by protecting thedesigner, could you expect the designer to prosper and return to purchasefrom you in the future. She set the standard, that many of us live by today.

Over the years, theaward has beengiven to severalindividuals. Thisyear, Ray Levy hasreceived the award. He has served onalmost everycommittee that wehave. No free lunch?Yes there is!

Ever hear about ASID INDUSTRY PARTNER LUNCH AND LEARN?

The first Friday every other month ASID has a Lunch & Learn. Five

Industry Partners will update you on their services and what’s new in their

industry. It’s open to all ASID members but we would like to see as many

designers as possible. Industry Partners support us so we would like to

continue to support our Industry Partners. So come and see what’s new or

just reacquaint yourself with our Industry Partners.

This is your opportunity as an Industry Partner to get in front of your

customers and it won't cost you a penny. It's our way at ASID of saying

thank you for being an Industry Partner and saying to you, "Show us what

you've got".

The Presenters are chosen on a first come basis. If you have an interest let

us know. Lunch for everyone is on us. For more details or to place your

name on the waiting list call: Linda 713-626-1470 or Ray 281-579-0200.

Turn To The ProsWhen I have a stopped up sink, I call the plumber for help. When the

lights start flickering, I call in the electrician. When we want to design or

redecorate a home, we call a designer. When you want a job done right you

call in the pros. Who does the designer call when she is working out her

design issues? Interior Designers are well informed but they can't know

everything about all the different trades, products, and services that are

now available to them. Nor should they be. No one expects that much

information from one person.

Industry Partners members are Pros too. We joined ASID to partner with

professionals! Professionals like YOU! We want you to turn to us when you

are faced with questions about product, safety, and installation. Your IP

members are brimming over with tons of information on their specialty

plus years of experience to back it up! We would love to share our knowl-

edge with you and your clients! Please don't be shy. We invite all your

questions, simple or complex, from designers and students alike. Please

call on your IP members when choosing trades and vendors. IP members

take pride in helping the designer and their clients make informed choices

and supplying the best in products and services. Surround yourself with

Professionals! We will be there long after the others have gone.

Student Representative to the Board MessageHi, my name is Kathryn Adams but everyone calls meKatye. I am a junior Interior Design major and BusinessManagement minor at Stephen F. Austin StateUniversity. I currently serve as the Vice President(President Elect) for the SFA Student Chapter of ASID.My love for our local student chapter inspired me to getmore involved in the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter of ASID.My first step was applying to be Student Rep to the

Board. With this goal achieved, I hope that I can help unite the studentvoices around our area and help create a stronger bridge between prac-ticing professionals and students aspiring to be designers. This is not justanother title or experience for my resume, I would like to be one of manyfuture building blocks that helps create a stronger connection and supportsystem for students now and in the future. We are the future of the designindustry and the decisions we make and opportunities we take advantage

of now will help ensure the strength of our industry in years to come. AfterI graduate in 2013 I plan on getting my Masters in Interior Design whilecontinuing to work at Greer’s (a local residential design andfabric/upholstery company in Nacogdoches, Texas). Ultimately I hope tomove to the Boulder, Colorado area to work for an Architecture and Designfirm specializing in Hospitality Design. I look forward to representing allthe students in the Texas Gulf Coast area and hope this year will be a hugesuccess for not only each student chapter but for the TGCC as well. Goodluck everyone!

Sincerely,

Katye AdamsASID TGCC Student Rep to the BoardE: [email protected][email protected] • P: 713-540-0121
