March 5, 2012 The American Museum of Magic Not every summer job is a “magic carpet ride.” But Katherine Carlton’s 2010 summer internship, at the American Museum of Magic, was just such an experience! Located in Marshall, MI, this Museum boasts the largest collection of magic memorabilia, including thousands of original posters, open to the public. It also hosts a summer lecture series with such alluring titles as “Mind Readers, Mesmerists, & Magnetic Ladies” and “Women in Boxes.” http://www.americanmuseumofmagic.org/ In addition to cataloging the poster collection and giving Museum tours, Katherine also got to participate in magic tricks demonstrations. Does she now have super-human powers? Well, perhaps so. She certainly proved to our live Rotary audience that – even in high heels … and even standing on one leg – she is no pushover!

There’s An App For That!

That’s right Rotarians! For all the iPhone users out there, you can now download the free ClubRunner app. This app gives you access to the clubs member list, and can also help you

locate nearby clubs.

Another really neat feature about the member list is that it gives you the option to import members into your cell

phones contact

list, picture

and all! To login to the ClubRunner app, you need your ClubRunner login and password. Sorry Android users, an app has not yet been developed, but is in the works!

International Youth Exchange EXPO (IYEE)   What is the EXPO?  The 2012 EXPO is the second year of the collaborative initiative of Rotary, IPFW’s Office of International Education and the Division of Continuing Studies and the David Hefner International Fund. The EXPO is designed to:

            1. introduce high school students and their parents to the many international   opportunities available to them. It will be held at the IPFW Student Union ballroom on   Saturday, March 24, 2012 from 10am – 1:30pm.

            2. introduce students and parents to the many exceptional community resources that   provide scholarships for high school students to travel and study overseas. This would   include the David Hefner International Fund, the Chapman Sister Cities Scholarships.

  3. explore the very real possibility that an international experience could potentially   impact college selection/course of studies and a  future career. Certainly, international   study and travel will be a life changing experience.

The EXPO will include:

More than a dozen international exchange programs will have exhibits.  Both short term (summer) and long term (academic year) exchange programs will be present.

IPFW will have exhibits from numerous areas of study to high light international studies, experiences and internships, including: business, engineering, languages, hotel/restaurant management and health & human services.

Businesses/companies will exhibit to introduce students to the reality that the global market is very much a part of our local economy. Also, that in 5+ years from now, with the combination of international experience(s) and college studies, there will be local career opportunities. Each exhibiting business/company will not only provide information about their business but also how the business is currently involved in the global market.

Two Resource Centers will also be available for students and parents. First, there will be a center to address how a family can afford an opportunity to travel and study abroad. The second center will provide information on how future college admissions and course of studies can be affected by an international experience

Most importantly

For the student(s) and their parent(s), the EXPO is a free and drop‐in event.
