the public ; we therefore prefumed to de-

SURVEYS and Topographical Charts being fit
only for a Library, fuch Maps as an Officer may-
take with him inro the Field have been much wanted.
The following Colleclion forms a Portable Atlas of
North America, calculated in its Bulk and Price to,
fuit the Pockets of Officers of all Ranks.
It confids of a General Map of that Part of the
Globe, called North America, and of a Second Ge-neral Map of those Islands, Shores, Gulfs, andBays, which form what is commonly called the WestIndies ; thefe we confider as Introdudtory, and as
giving a General Idea, and we trufl: a juft one. Thenext three Maps, which divide the Continent of Norikjimerica into the Northern, Middle, and Southern, Britijli
Colonies form the Body of this Work. The Firft
is copied from the Maps and Surveys which have been
publiflied under the Protedion of the Admiralty and
Board of Trade. The Maritime Parts of CamdaiNova Scotia, and Nei^ England, have been adjufted bjMajor Holland from his aftronomic Obl'ervations,
and the interior Parts have been carefully ccrrc4fiecJ
from Governor Pownall's late Map. The Second^
being the Provinces of New Tork, Neiv Jerfey, Fenfyhaaiv.,
and Maryland, have been collated with, and corrcd:ed
by Governor Pownall's late Map ; and as nothing has
yet been found, or can be more exaft than MefTrs. Fryand Jefferson's Survey of Virginia, in tliofe Parts this
Map is copied from that, with the Addition of Go-vernor Pownall's late Improvements. The Third
Map
( V,;. )
Map of the SoutJmn Colcnics is projcifled in thr
grcutcft Part from Actual Surveys, in others from
Journals, as laid down by Pcrfons perfcdtiy knowinp; in
ihc Topography of the rcfpcckive Countries, by Mcfl'rs.
Collet, Dcnbikek, Cook, de Braum, and others.
The Coafts of L^Jl crJ IFeJl FiorUa, and tlic Gulf of
Floriddy arc adjulled by the very curious Nautical Sur-
veys of Engineer Romans. This Map will be found
to have a vcrv particular Degree of Geographical and
Topographical Merit As the Lakes C/:nmpI.iin
and George form the Main Pafs between tlie Maritime
Colonies and Catiada we have added, as an Appentlix
to this Collc(ftion, a particular Map of thefe Parts done
Irom Adual Survey.
