    Introduction To The

    Digestive SystemHave you ever

    wondered how our

    digestive system

works? Well, everydaywe get hungry and we

    have to eat. We eat

    something and it takes

    some hours for the

    food to go through all

    our body, then weeliminate waste.Later,

    we get hungry again

    and the process starts

    all over again.

    Parts And Organs Of

The Digestive SystemOur digestive systemorgans are a very

important part of our body. The process of digestion

    starts in our mouth.

    According to

    Enchantedlearning.com,

our mouth breaks food intosmaller pieces and mixes it

    with saliva to start the

    process of breaking it

    down. Our esophagus

    takes food to the stomach.

    In our stomach *acids and

*enzymes break down thefood. Our small intestine

    breaks down food into

    nutrients that cells can use.

    The large intestine removes

    water from food that we

    dont need and keeps it

    until elimination.

Acids: Any of a class of

    substances that release

    hydrogen ions when

    disolved in water and

can react with a baseto form salts.

    Enzymes:A substance

    produced by a livingorganism.

What Process Does Our Food Have

    When It Passes Through The

    Digestive System?

First it starts in the mouth.

    Chewing breaks food down and

mixes it with saliva that turns

food into smaller *molecules. Then we swallow the food that

    goes down the esophagus into

    the stomach. In the stomach

    strong acids and juices break

down the food and pass it to the

    small intestine. In the small

intestine food breaks down intonutrients. Then the nutrients pass

through the small intestine to the

blood to the cells. In the large

intestine unused parts of the food

go to the large intestine where

water is removed and waste gets

    ready for elimination.

    Molecules: A group of

    atoms bonded together,

representing the smallestfundamental unit of a

    chemical compound.

Diseases That Can AffectOur Digestive System

    According to YOUR BODY

    BATTLES A STOMACH ACHE by

    Vicky Cobb, something that can

affect our normal digestion is a

    stomach ache. For example a

    harmful *bacteria called *E.Coli

can cause a stomach ache. Also in

rare cases parasites can cause a

    stomach ache. But most stomach

aches are caused by a *virus. A disorder of our digestive system

    is *cancer because we can

    develop stomach,colon or intestine

cancer. And it can be really bad

for our digestive system. Also harmful bacteria can affect

    our digestive system.

E.Coli: A bacteriumcommonly found inthe intestines ofhumans and otheranimals.

    Virus: An infectionor disease

Cancer: The diseasecalled by anuncontrolled divisionof abnormal cells in apart of the body.

Bacterias: Any of alarge group or verysmall one celledorganisms thatreproduce fission or byforming spores.

    Keeping Our Digestive

    System Healthy

    According to FOOD AND

    DIGESTION by Steve Parker

*proteins are very important for our

digestive system. We need proteins for

    growth, repair and replacement.

Proteins are found in food like meat,

    fish, eggs etc.

    We also need to eat

*carbohydrates to have energy and to

    be active. Foods that have

    carbohydrates are: potatoes, bread,

    pasta etc. Carbohydrates are very

important for our body.*Fats are better to be

    consumed in small amounts.

We also have to eat fruits

and vegetables because they give us

    vitamins and minerals.

Proteins: Any of a classof nitrogenous organiccompounds that consistas large molecules.

Carbohydrates: Any of alarge group of organiccompounds occuring onfoods and living tissuesand includingsugar, starch, cellulose.

Fats: A natural oily orgreasy substanceoccuring on animalbodies.

    Interesting Facts About TheDigestive System

-Did you know that taste buds are things

in our tongue which help us know what

food tastes like? Taste buds send

messages to our brain to help us know.

-Did you know that your stomach can

stretch to hold the food you eat?-Did you know that food takes 20-45

hours to travel from one end of the

digestive system to the other?-We make 1-3 pints of saliva a day.-Food stays in your stomach from 2 to 3

    hours.-An adults stomach can hold

    approximatley 1.5 liters of material.

    Conclusion

Finally, I hope that you have

    learned a lot about the

    digestive system and its

    process. Personally I learned

a lot of new things and

    discovered how well the

    digestive system works. I

had a lot of fun working on

this project and hopefullyyou have found it as

    interesting as I have.
