Hello fellow club members. I would like tothank the people who arranged the wild landfire training on the 18th. This training was veryinformative. It provided information that everyhome owner needs to know. Also everyoneparticipating in any event in support of CDFshould attend this training for their own safety.I have just signed the contract with the catererfor the Christmas party to be held on Dec 9,2005. The food selection will be the same aslast year. See you all there. This Field day willbe held at the Shrine camp again this year. Ihope to see all of you this year. There are somechanges this year due to a conflict with a Shrineevent. Expect a lot of visitors at the event whoare not hams. Let us present our best side. Weare cooperating with them to make both eventsa success. Last but not least, I would like tothank all the members who helped in the recentSpecial Olympics Games.

Pat says, “Hmm,” and before you know it,that dusty unit is repaired and operating.

Of course, Pat has used his radio for thegood of the public. The Cedar fire gave himthe opportunity to help out by providingcommunication to emergency services.Radios are not limited to disasters, as Patonce covered his son’s birth live from thedelivery room. There Pat was, reportingeach point, play by play, as he welcomedhis son into the world. And yet, radiosprove even more of a joy when they can beused during lunch breaks at work. Hey, itmight not be sufficient discussion time, butanything to stay connected.

Pat has been a member of the El CajonClub since 1972, and has recentlyupgraded to an Extra license. He favors FMand 2M. Both his wife and son are Hams,(maybe that radio presence in the deliveryroom did some good). Pat hopes thatradios continue to do well, especially theolder units. He says, “Don’t forget the past. The past is what forms the future.”

No longer just a voice on the radio, thespotlight shines on Pat Bunsold. 73’s!

There once was a girl rat named Brooke, which happened to be pregnant, andsearching for nesting materials. Brookespotted an old fishing net that wasultimately too much for her to use. However, in her struggle with theinevitably too large fishing net, a linewrapped itself around the girl rat’s neckand began to choke her. Luckily forBrooke, her hero wasn’t too far andcame to her rescue. At about 2:00 am,there was a “tap, tap, tap.” Using acable, a boy rat, Heza, continuallytapped for at least twenty minutes, sacrificing his own freedom to saveBrooke’s life.

Really, these two rats don’t have muchto do with radios, or perhaps they might. One could say that amateur radiooperators act like the Heza rat (minusthe rat part). They call attention andassist people in need. True, andrespectfully acknowledged. However, this isn’t about amateur radio operators,as a whole, this is about one: PatBunsold, WAMO #205, WA6MHZ.

Although Pat tells a great story about apregnant rat and her rescuer, an evenbetter topic, is his passion for old radios. We’re talking old rigs that may besometimes mistaken for junk. But that’shalf the fun for Pat, fixing up outdatedequipment is doing what he calls“preserving amateur radio history.”Anything the kids look at and say “Ew,”

Nice booth!

......

I remember the time that my wife and Iwent to the Del Mar Fair and came acrossthe ham radio booth. We met a man namedNick Callas K6DBJ, who was excited toshare his ham radio hobby and talked to usfor about an hour or so. We ended uptaking his class, getting our Novice license, joining the Convair Club, and eventuallyupgrading through Nick’s classes. WithNick’s continued encouragement, westarted to volunteer at the Convair picnicsand the Del Mar Fair. Nick said it is veryimportant to volunteer; it is what HamRadio is all about.

I learned a lot from Nick and find myselfdoing the same things that he used to do:talking about ham radio to people, teachingham radio, getting involved with a club, andvolunteering whenever I can. I neverthought that I would have so much funwhen we stopped by that booth to see whatradios were all about that day. Lots ofmemories and good times… I wouldencourage hams to volunteer wheneverpossible because you never know in whatway you may touch someone’s life.

Field day, Christmas party and election ofofficers are some of the most important eventssponsored by the Amateur Radio Club of ElCajon. We are a club of approximately 235 paidmembers. Yet for the meeting to discussarrangements for this year’s field day, therewere only 29 members present. Only 29! Thatrepresents 10% of the total membership, theconstitutional minimum to conduct business. This year that figure is particularly egregiousbecause of the turmoil between the club and theAl Bahr shrine camp. This year the club nearlylost field day in its entirety. Several errorsoccurred (not the fault of the club, its officersor membership) that would have preventedfield day at that facility. The members of theexecutive committee worked very hard to solvethis problem so that the membership couldattend and enjoy field day. The problem waseventually solved with the help of Chet SmithK6VM our club’s newest lifetime member. However, even after being informed via theclub reflector that field day may be canceled, only 29 members attended the meeting. Itleads me to question the whole reason forhaving field day or any other activities. We allknow that every amateur radio club is sufferingfrom declining membership and malaise. Butwe cannot continue to blame the Internet, cellphones and Palms for its decline. We can onlyblame ourselves. I sincerely believe thatamateur radio has more relevance in the 21st

century than it did during the 20th. Think ofamateur radio during the 2003 “Firestorm.”While we had barely a mention in the local newsmedia we were still justifiably proud of ourefforts. The San Diego Fire Department andmany other local fire jurisdictions have seenthat relevance and organized CERT teams whichconsist of civilians. Chief among these teammembers are amateur radio operators.Members of the ARCEC participated during theFirestorm of 2003 and I’m sure that clubmembers will also participate in CERT

in the event of another firestorm or earthquakeor whatever. Many of our members participatein ARES, Special Olympics and Red Flag. Butfor a hard fought field day, only 29 attended. This will be published after field day, so itwould be impossible to gauge the success orfailure of that event. That determination is leftup to you the membership. We need volunteersto tell the amateur radio story. One of the waysthat story is told is during the Del Mar Fair.Same problem, but a different organization.Lack of volunteers to work the SANDARC boothat the fair leaves the notion in stranger’s mindsthey don’t even care enough of their hobby todisplay it and talk to the general public about it.

After the general membership meeting, only oneperson walked up to me and said “thank you”for the hard work of the executive committee.Sounds like a familiar story I once heard as ayoung child.

Michael MastonN6OPH

Joke continued

Morris and Esther agreed and up they went. The pilot did all kinds of fancy maneuvers, but not a word was heard. He did his daredevil tricks over and over again, but still nota word. When they landed, the pilot turned toMorris and said “by golly, I did everything Icould to get you to yell out, but you didn’t.I’m impressed!”Morris replied “Well I was going to saysomething when Esther fell out, but 50dollars is 50 dollars.

Well, I had just enough time to put in somewords about field day. I would like to thankeveryone who came up and helped. Weshared the camp site with some of the AlBahr Shrine members. We had some of theShriners stop by and ask questions aboutwhat we were doing. I spent about 40minutes with one talking about what HamRadio was all about and how he could geton the air. I put him on the air and he washooked. He is planning to get his ticket. The 6 meter band I was working on had afew openings now and then. It was wideopen for the last three hours of the contest.Larry and I logged most all of them in thattime. We took time out to chat with Bruceand a ham that had to shut down manytimes due to lighting and thunder storms. Most of all we had fun working the radiosand talking to members of our club.If you missed this year, plan to come upnext year. We will have the camp all toourselves, but I will miss talking to theShriners. I hope you enjoy the photos fromfield day.

Field DayReport 2005

What, No Floppyor Serial Port?

Part 2They told me if I send the original discs in with theserial numbers and I could upgrade the program toCD-ROM for half price. Of course the main programsthat I really needed were for the Yaesu VR-7R andthe FT-8100. I found software online for the YaesuVR-7R but nothing for the FT-8100. The software forthe Yaesu VR-7R load up fine.

Now, to test the adapter and the software. Withseveral tries, I narrowed it down to the USB serialport connector. I did a search online and found thatthe serial USB adapters on the market may not becompatible with the radio programs. They suggestedto different types one from www.ttl2usb.com/ and RTSystems. Since I downloaded the software for free, from the www.kc8unj.com/ website I went to theirwww.ttl2usb.com/ partnership, they supply theadapter and cables. After a few days they came inthe mail. I opened up the package, per theinstructions I install them. It worked 100%. Now all I had to do is to send off for the upgrade forthe FT-8100, and hope that would work. All my Icomsoftware loaded in worked 100% with the aftermarketUSB serial port adapter sold at the computer store. Itwas only the Yaesu software that had a problem withthe USB to serial port adapter. So if you’re thinkingabout upgrading your laptop or home computer, lookinto getting your adapters and software in orderbefore attempting to install them. All of my otherprograms installed the first time. All this just to makeit easier to program my ham radios, was it worth it?Well, I think so. When you have more than one of thesame radio, and all the settings that you have to doon these new radios it does make it easier.

Take care, 73Paul Rios KC6QLSUP and Running Radio programmer
