Much has been spoken and written about the Parkdale Football Club (Souther nFootball League) and Mentone Vultures AFC proposed merger. Recentlymembers of Parkdale overwhelmingly accepted the motion " to merge with th eMentone Vultures Amateur Football Club and play in the VAFA from 2004 o nwards, conditional upon the Executive of the VAFA agreeing for the merged entityto commence in C section of the VAFA . "To canvas any objections to this proposal before it is considered by the Executive, the VAFA will hear from any interested VAFA clubs ( this coming Monday at 6pm)and will meet with the Southern Football League, as the VAFA is mindful ofmaking decisions which may adversely affect our highly respected neighbour. Thisinformation, along with the formal application from Parkdale and Mentone
PHIL STEVENSCHIEF EXECUTIVE
OFFICER
Vultures, where it (the potential merged club) has to address certain criteria, will be considered by theExecutive Committee at its October seminar .
The practice of runners, trainers and water-carriers remaining on the field after having performed theirspecific duty - runners (delivering a message) ; trainers (attending a player in need of medical assist ance) ;water carriers (delivering water only to a player in need) came to a head during last weekend's matches . Ithas been obvious over the last few weeks, that with possibly the excitement of a finals match, these officialshave been remaining on the field making no effort to leave . Some officials are even remaining on the fieldand actin as an intermediary for other officials in passing on messages to players or obstructin playdeliberately . Normally umpires will control this practice but often they are busy with the game and ~o notnotice such happenings .The Executive Chairman has instructed me to inform clubs that should a duty officer notice any of theabove takin~ place he will, at the next major break in play (1/2 time, 1/2 time, 3/4 time), speak to theoffender and him/her that they cannot participate for the rest of the game and that official cannot be
replaced by another official . Breaches during the final quarter of the match may see the duty officer advisinga club official, such as a team manager, that the offending official is to remove himself/herself from the field, not to be able to return or be replaced for the remainder of the game . The reaction to this directive from theclubs will have a profound influence on the Executive Committee's thinking in regard to officials on groundsin 2004 .
At the recent Vote Count an d Presentation Night St Bernards won the Under 19 Quit SmokeFree Most
Disciplined Club Award, Each senior section's winning club receives $1,000 for its win . These clubs are A
section Old Trinity; B section De La Salle; C section aulfield Grammarians ; D1 section Monash Blues ;D2 section Bentleigh ; D3 section Kew and D4 section Bull een Cobras . These awards are based on ratingsgiven each match by the umpires (out of 5) for the behaviour demonstrated of each club's players, officialsand spectators. The VAFAUA is also awarded $1,000 for the extra paperwork that is required on their part .
In my travels around finals venues over the last few weeks, many people have asked why the Amateurscharge at venues when we do not during the home and away games . The answer is twofold - and it is notthat the VAFA is money-hungry! One - gate receipts from the finals series make up approximately 10% of th erequired income for the year, following income from affiliationfees (60%) and sponsorship (30%) . Secondly to provide classvenues such as Sandringham, Preston, Collingwood and CentralReserve, for example, payments from councils or groundmanagers are required to be made by the VAFA to secure suchvenues . The alternative would be to play finals at our ownvenues and recoup lost income through higher affiliation fees . Incharging we always make a conscious effort to ensure ourcharges are lower than those of other competitions .
Unsung heroes . A big thank you to the VAFA Duty Officers(Executive members and club identities) who work hard eachfinals day to ensure that each day runs smoothly.

"No comment," he said when asked to namehis preferred winner of Old

Fair enough, too, with Nicholson pointing to

ON THE MENU
The match that jumps at you like fat in a
frying pan when _vou look at today's
preliminary final is the corresponding clash
last year, when Old Xavs won by 33 points .
In that game, Old Xavs were served well by
popular full-forward DanielRichardson, who
bagged seven goals after some strong marking .
There was also a howling wind, one which kept
Old Scotch from kicking a goal towards the
Glenhuntly Rd end .
As for today, well, Richardson is no longer
there and the wind is in the grip of the weather
gods .
More realistic previews can be lifted from thisyear's home-and-away season, where bothmatches were bite-the-nails episodes .
Old Scotch won by 22 and five pointsrespectively and if there's anything we'velearned it is that they'll look for Luke Hawkins, who kicked five and three goals in the twomatches .

battle in
the B grade second semi final against Old
Essendon GrarnMar. The scene was set for a
battle with the, Grammar finishing 2 gamesclear on top of the ladder, while the Friars tookgreat confidence in the knowledge that they hadenjoyed a combined winning margin of 125points in their 2 home and away outings
.
As expected the game started at a frenetic pacewith both sides making some uncharacteristicerrors but it was the Bombers who settled firstto play some good football . The Friars werethankful at the first change for the opposition'sinaccuracy as they went in 10 points downwhen it should have been 5 goals .
The pattern continued in the second term asOld Essendon won the footy in the mid-field,moving it beautifully through that area throughBiggs, Leask, and young tormont, and werenow beginning to convert their chances in fron t

. This
was the catalyst for what can only be describedas an awesome quarter of football that saw theFriars rattle on the majors at a phenomenal ratewith Cunningham providing a strong target andmarked everything that came down to him
kicking three Et. while Joel Anderson worked
hard at his eet. The Friars were runnin in
waves, moving the ball brilliantly and relis~n ¢
the open spaces of EP, while the -rhea
marking of Rob Pasqualotto, Carrigg, and Swain
was a treat to watch. The Grammar'sineffectiveness in the aerial duels was startin g
to take a heavy toll . It was hard to believe Brian
Phan had missed any football at all as he
continually provided run through the middlecombining with thethe newly crowned

It was some of theseefforts which forced Old Essendon to continueto fritter away chances in front of oal as theylooked set to take a 28 point buffer into themain break, before a timely goal on the siren

big stage of finals, he did it last year this sameday, and he duly provided a couple ofmemorable last term goals, including a pearlerwhile tucked on the boundary . Another 6oa1quarter completed the most memorable of Friarperformances with 17 majors to three in thesecond half, which not only sends them into theGrand Final but also puts them into A grade in2004. The Bombers totally devastated, left tolament what may have been .
This is an outstanding achievement as it is thefirst time Whitefriars has reached this level in itsshort, but illustrious 17 year history and theday will go down as the greatest ever for theclub .
In the Reserves the De La Salle unit superblycoached by Michael Hegan were far too strongfor Old Paradians still suffering from a flu virusthat spread through the club. The veteran PatO'Callaghan in the ruck was a thorn in Parade'sside all day and finished with four goals . Othergood players were McInerney, Hyde and Laragy ,
ages nearly named them all but space does notpermit . Another veteran in Paul Walsh was goodfor OPS' Receiving support, from James Collins,Jeremy Swindon and Tony Lombardi .PREVIEWToday sees the last chance for Old Essendonand De La Salle to earn the right for a crack atWhitefriars . For 21 guys it will be the last timethey pull on a boot for some 6 months so noholds barred for a full on attack on the little redfooty . Would have been a tough week mentallymore than physically out in Bomberland asFrank and his brains trust would have workedhard to put the memory of last week's secondhalf fade out totally in the background . Can theytotally erase it is the big question and I'm notsure my answer to that is Yes .
Mr. Miller and his cast of thousands would haveanalyzed the Bombers game plan and strategiesmany times over and will be sure they have theplan to counteract anything different that mayhappen today. De La will be refreshed by thebreak and are in pretty good form, but you don'tfinish two games clear on top of the ladder if youcan't play football . Sandringham presents noadvantage for either side, so tipping the winneris hard . Alle edly I am not allowed or supposedto pick the B~ue and Golds again this year, so inwhat I believe to be an error of judgment I won'tand will stick the Bombers without any belief atall.

Review
The pre season premiership favourites 3 mstormed into B Grade with a barnstorming second
quarter against the disappointing Animals . With nohowling gale, the game was played in unusualconditions for Sandringham in front of a largecrowd . The Animals started very well, as Paul
McGloin was looking very dangerous every time theball moved forward . A set shot after the qtr timesiren from Steve Buckle pushed the lead out to 19points and gave them all the momentum . The rainstarted to tumble in the second and so did theSharks goals, as they slammed on a lazy 9 goals
while the Animals were held to nothing in a matchwinning period. Michael Matulick started to controlthe centre of the ground, feeding his onballers,
which included regular backman Chris Martin .Luke Buller was everywhere and even had a Cupido
like minute, booting 2 in succession to finish off thequarter.
The Animals as expected came out hard in the thirdquarter but could not get past the likes of Tim
Collins and Matulick dropping back in the Animalshole . The last quarter was played in junk time, as
the game was dead and buried at orange time . Thematch up between Murray Pitts against T.McCannin the goal square was the highlight of the day, with
honours slightly going to Pitts with 4 goals .Anthony Ballard tried hard all day for the losers, as
did Steve Ronchi shifting between back and
forward, Brayden Haynes enjoyed a day up forwardcreating many opportunities for his forwards and
sneaking in 3 goals of his own in a polished display,
The Slewps boys would be shattered to go out instraight sets after mixing it with the best in Crunchgrade all year.

Four weeks ago a t5pm the Sharks were probably penciling in venues
for Mad Monday after losing their final gameagainst the Lions. However as fate would have itthey survived in the four by a percentage point and
today find themselves in the Grand Final againstthe Lions . The ledger is all square at one apieceafter both sides won their respective home game .Beaumaris won their game at Shark Park while theywere running hot and appear to have recaptured
that form after demolishing the Animals by 82'points in the prelim . Collegians form in the seconchalf of the year has been nothing short of solid aftei
questions were asked about whether they coulcbeat the top sides early in the season. Both sides have the luxury of having some ver
talented footballers in their side and will rely oltheir big guns to fire to ensure victory . Murray Pittlooked very dangerous up forward last week an
was given tremendous support from the towerinSean Coote . The Sharks also have the flexibility c

throwing their line up around where needed . They
also have the advantage of having the best ruckman
in the comp in Matulick, which is a massive
advantage at EP . The Lions on the other hand haveforward line potency of their own with the goal
kicking machine Jono Dixon (81 goals), Brock
Mooney & Shura Taft . Ali 3 are capable of kicking a
bag on their day. Coach Hawkins will rely on
midfielders Shinkfield, Harrison & Hosking to get
on top . The key to their side's hopes may well rely
on ruckman Dave Atkinson, who has a huge task
ahead .Both sides have beaten the Animals convincingly to
get here after Collegians second semi win by 48
points . The Sharks have found their form at theright end of the season and have the guns to trouble
the Lions . However Collegians form for the past 12
weeks has been top notch and with the extra weeksbreak under their belt will have more run in their
legs around the expanses of EP. Collegians to win
by 15 points.

Rd 4 Collegians by 39 points at "Harry Trott "
Rd 13 Collegians by 26 points at "Gordon Barnard"The Lions have been the dominant side all year andhave kept OC to fewer than 5 goals on bothoccasions throughout the year. It will be a strongerOC this time with some senior players thrown intothe mix, but the Lions will hold their form to startthe day off well for the club .

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLEI

Pleased to announce that Zane Goold from
Mulgrave was announced as the winner of the
VAFA/MSJFL (Moorabbin Saints) Most
Promising Umpire Award . Zane received a
trophy from the VAFA and his parents $100which must be used to help Zane's education
expenses next year . Hopefully Zane sees the
VAFA as a terrific pathway to becoming an
AFL umpire . Zane's profile is as follows :
Turned 17 on 17/7/03; Umpired U15 West GF
on Sunday September 7th; Umpired in the
MSJFL for the last 4 years; Possesses a great
temperament and laid back style ; Older
brother Matthew also umpires in the MSJFL .
Well done Zane and all at the VAFA wish you
well for your future in umpiring .

Close finishes in reserves matches in many
finals matches last week has seen the VAFAannounce that the A section finals will
commence at 2 .10 pm due to the fact that
reserves A section matches are 25 minutes
plus time on per quarter whilst other sections
are 20 minutes plus time on per quarter . All
going well, with the 11 .20 starts (A) and
11.30 starts ( other sections) there will be a
reasonable break between games for warm-
ups and presentations . . . . .except if there is a
draw in a reserves final !
0 0 0
In this event extra time is played . Both teamscross straight over (no address from coaches)and play 5 minutes plus time-on followed by abreak (coaches can quickly address teams)then teams change ends and play another 5minutes plus time-on .

It must have been guarded discussions
during breaks at Jefferson Ford - Mentone
over the past week. Reason why? With
Collegians playing Beaumaris in thisSaturday's C section Grand Final it's a "who's
who" of both clubs at Jefferson's. In
particular, Company Secretary John Pit(father of Beaumaris's champ Murray), aSimon Jefferson (Head of JF) and Bre
Jefferson, former Collegians' champion pla}and Dealer Principal of the JF Group headthe opposing teams .
As an aside, and as free plug, the VAFA Cldrives a Ford Falcon sold to him by former (Mentonians' president y Austin from, yguessed it Jefferson Ford (Mentone) .

photo) he dominated the EP landscape .
01You do get some wags . Bloke at headquailast year berated our groundsman for a sground for the 2002 GF . Same bcomplained last week about the solid eepitch area and practice wicket area . Obvicthis guy hasn't heard of the water restriciwhich limit watering of sports grounds a

" Presidential Girl Power" is looking prettygood in the VAFA at the moment!! With OldXaverians' D avina Connors-Calhaem's teamstill very much in the A section premiership
race, Carol Nichols' Monash Gryphons in theD3 section grand final and Monica Lawson'sMt Lilydale in the D4 section finals it will beinteresting to see if the gals can get 3 out ofthe 7 senior premierships available .

Interestingly, once again, there are no "live"entries in the "Sportscover Pick The SevenPremiers Competition" which carries a$ 1 0,000 first prize if one of a club's two
entries could (alone) complete this feat . Manyentries competing however, for the $1,000
consolation prize .

Speaking of feats, what about this one? OldXaverians' stalwart Tony Landrigan has just
played in his tenth consecutive premiership -Club XVIII 1994, 96, 97, 98 , 99 , 2000, 01,
02 03 and Reserves 1995 .

Former South Melbourne, Fitzroy and North
champ John Murphy is looking at gettinginvolved in Amateur football, either as a
coach or as an official . "Murph" was mostrecently GM of VFL club Coburg and can be
spoken to on 0419 3 74937 .

Avid FTLOTG reader Howard from Old Carey
writes to say he read with interest in "LookingBack" recently that Old Melburnians' pair
Andrew and Tony Witts played 400 gamesbetween them for OM's . Howard reports that
the brothers Elliott played 685 betweenthem - Richard (275), John, yep "Big Jack"
(250) and Ross (160) . Begs the question . Canany other brothers exceed 685 VAFA games
played?

D1 SECTION GRAND FINALS
AJAX takes its place as the 2nd Promotee for2003, so well done to the Players, & to
Jeffrey Jankie, Peter Kagan, and their
dedicated crew . Fantastic effort! The very
best of good fortune to Monash Blues &
AJAX today! Many thanks to Bernie Brennan the D1
Finals Co-Duty Officer, and our championCheltenham gate crew for the series, Anne,
Charlotte, Hannah, Jenny, Lynn, Madi,
Melanie, Michelle, Alan, & Ross . And a very
special thank-you to our host, StephenKneen, President of Cheltenham FC, whohas made things happen, impeccably!
Thank also to Simon the scoreboard pilot .
PRELIMS WRAP UP
ReservesMonash Blues ground out a hard earned
win over Banyule in an intense encounter.
The Ashers tight defence finally won the day
against a great bunch of Bears who persisted
to the end . Paul Nevill played a top game in
the Ruck, well supported by defenders Jono
Moresi & Blocker McCormick.
SeniorsAjax and Old P/ientonians put on a brilliant
display of ball handling and rapid movementwith the Jackas seemingly in command at
Half Time courtesy of their power-laden
forwards . After a long stoppage early in 93
while the gallant Chad Twentyman wascarried from the field with a bad head cut,
the Panthers came alive and slammed on 6unanswered goals to start Q4 with a narrow
lead. The Jackers then recomposed
themselves and dominated the last term for
a comfortable win . Elliot Janover, Gab
Dukes, & Danny Weislitzer, kept the ball
moving for the Jackas, with Jason Brain
strong in defence and what can be saidabout Julian K, just amazing! For the
Panthers, Carter & Dart played super games,
with Basile & Ferguson also standouts .
GRAND FINALS
Reserves
AJAX and
Monash Blues
resume their friendly rivalry to decidewhich one owns the lst Flag up for grabs
today . With little or no advantage to eitherbecause their Ones also meet in thatdecider, I will be guided by overallperformance and choose the Ashers to wina close encounter mainly due to their nighon water-tight defence .
SeniorsThe Ashers and Jackas clash again in
hopefully better conditions than their 2nd
Semi encounter, so the real attributes of
these two spectacular teams can be seen to
best advantage . For sheer football ability I
rate the 2003 Ashers & Jackas as the best
Di sides I've seen in my time with the
Section, and I'll probably offend both by
even ranking them above their respective

1999 outfits! The 42 players representing
their Clubs today are not only
accomplished footballers they are also very
good athletes! I see no point in undertaking
a detailed line by line comparative analysis,
because, in the end, the game will be won
by relative variances of millimetres,
milliseconds, and the quirky bounce of that
confounded Sherrin ellipsoid . Collectively,
these three variables of position, time, and
direction are called 'one percenters', and it
is the players' individual & collective
concentration on those 'minima', that will
decide the colour of the 2003 D1 Section
Pennant . The outcome will go down to the
dying seconds, and I tip the Ashers by a
point !

AJAX - congratulates Grant Samuel whoplayed his 100th game last week against OldMentonians in a game he'll never forget .Starting with the U19s in '96, Grant floatedbetween the Seniors & Reserves, picking up a
couple of Flag medallions on the way .Following a 'wilderness' year in 2001, his
passion was rekindled in 2002, but just whenhe was leading in the Club B & F an injury in
R9 stopped him dead! Sammy came through asolid pre-season this year, played every game,
and is hoping for another Premiershipmemento today !

What Ed Says:
ReviewD2 has certainly been blessed with some greatfinal's action and the preliminary final was no
exception. Warm favorites Peninsula had to fight all
the wav over West Brunswick . To call the Westies
effort gallant would be to underrate their
performance . Poor use of the scoring end in the first
quarter was always going to put the Westies underpressure however they hung in their against the
powerful Pirates . A sixteen-point loss however 29scoring shots against the winners 25 told the tale of
the inaccuracies . Fantastic year for Julian Siebrandand his club, no premiership hangover and so close
to the double jump. On the other hand, Peninsuladeserved both the re-match with the Reds as well as
promotion . With the likes of stars Payze, Dentry and
Teelow firing the Pirate machine was able to marchinto the Grand Final .
PreviewDespite some challengers through the year, ultimately the best two teams reached the final day.
Respective coaches Burgen and Sill can beextremely proud of their clubs though that will
count for little on Saturday . Like most Grand
Finalists, both sides have a mix of disciplineddefence mixed with attacking flair . The Pirates have
guns such as Murray, Dentry and Teelow holdingsway down back whilst the Reds rely on Cairns andDrury (watch for his kicking exhibition) to hold the
fort . Up forward, Payze is all class for Peninsulawhilst one of my favorites, 'Dacca' Diacogiorgis, isone the canniest players going around and loves the
big time games . I fancy the matchwinners may
either be Cahill for the Reds or Murphy for the
Pirates . Really hard call . Peninsula were the classact during the year whilst Fitzroy have timed their
run to perfection . OK, Reds with Dacca to kick a
goal after the sire to secure victory by two points!
What Andrew Says :
PreviewDespite the two best teams making it through to theGrand Final, this finals series has been full ofsurprises ; Fitzroy 's upset of the previouslyunbeaten Peninsula and Old Carey's early exitbeing just two of them . ]But the biggest surprise has been the extent towhich Peninsula has come back to the field . The
9P
Pirates lookedunstoppable duringthe home and awayseason and formuch of the yea rwere unbackable flag fa ;ourites . While Peninsula is
still a force to be reckoned with, their aurao invincibilitv has been considerably dulled during
the last fortnight .After losing to Fitzroy, the Pirates had to pull out allstops last week against a spirited West Brunswi
c to avoid a straight_ sets exit and coach Julian S ill
was full of praise for the vanquished ."Julian (Siebrand) has done a great job to get theirfrom a lower division to the finals,- Sill said."I've got a lot of respect for that side . "
The Grand Final is Peninsula's chance foi
atonement : a chance for them to avenge theiv
humiliating loss against Fitzroy. And Sill thinks hi:
side is better prepared this time."We were probably ripe for the picking in man, respects coming into a final's campaign hein~
undefeated," he said."Now that we have been beaten and had to playhard fought final, the guys have learnt a bit oflesson in terms of hunger and what's required in
final, "For Sill, stopping Fitzroy's midfield dynamo L'v
Cahill was high on the agenda .

"There are probably three players for them - Cahillis the main one -who we know can play good footyand our midfielders need to be on top of it ."Although the match is still a few days away . themind games have already started with Sill claiminghis side was the underdog ."The pressure is now on them . ""They're the ones who have got through first . We'rethe ones who have had to stumble and now comeback. ""They'd have to go in as favourites . "This was a point Fitzroy coach Graham Burgenwould not dispute ."We have to be," Burgen said . "We absolutely have
to be ."Had Burgen been a bookie at TAB Sportsbet, hesaid he would have offered odds of S1 .40 to $2 .70 .From talking to Burgen, it's hard not, to put thehouse on it ."I think we are well rested and we have our bestfooty still to play," he said ."We are very excited for the contest and confidentafter what we saw on the weekend . "With the week off to freshen up and reflect, Burgensaid his side could not be better prepared for thematch ."We've had all the hard games and had theconditioning . ""I couldn't be happier with where we're at . "
"I'd like Lou Bvrne back but other than that Iwouldn't change a thing . "
SummaryPeninsula and Fitzroy are the two best sides in thecompetition and deserve to play off for thepremiership . While Peninsula has looked awesomefor much of the year they have had two extremelytough matches in the last fortnight. In contrast,
the Reds have had the luxury of a week off. Thiswill be a tough low-scoring slog and will suit
Fitzroy to a tee .Prediction : Fitzroy 15 points

;?,:_ins : : . O. -~ . - congratulates Michael Goldthorpon reaching the milestone of 100 games for thePirates and true to his style, he has timed his runperfectly to grand final day . Since joining the clubin 1998 and continuing the tradition of hardness atthe ball shown by all wearers of the No . 3 guernsey,"Goldy" has been a highly skilled performer, renowned for his baulking - in fact he prides
himself on it. Never one to use formalities in hisrequest for the footy, his simple "Yep, yep, yep, mate, mate, mate" has stood him in great stead overthe years . From all at Pirateland, well done Goldy! We look forward to the next 100 .Fitzroy Reds - congratulates balding father figure
of the senior line-up Steve Addicott who plays his50th game for the club in today's Grand Final . This
father of twins relishes the physicality of the gameand can be seen before the first bounce hunting theopposition with his trademark hunched prowlaround the centre square . During the week, he willdo endless laps of the track in the dark aftertraining, probably plotting his next kill . A winner of
the senior best-and-fairest in 2000, he is alsofavoured to win the Reds "Allround Mr Nice Guy"award amongst stiff competition for 2003 . Steve
encapsulates the spirit of VAFA football on and offthe fi,Id and all at the Reds faithful hope that hecan ~n nr for a few years yet . Well done Stevie A .

Well, this is it, the last D3 game of the year, and
fittingly, the two best teams at the end of Round 1 8
have fought through to the big one . So sit back, relax, enjoy what will hopefully be a fitting finale toa sometimes fantastic, sometimes frustrating, butalways fascinating season of D3 football .PRELIMINARY FINAL REVIEWIt was a thriller at McHale Stadium, with people onthe edge of their seat (or feet, if they werestanding), culminating in a dramatic last minutefinish .Rupo scored the first goal quite early in the game,
only for the Gryphs to reply quickly throughGeorge Harrak. Nick Rutherford also got quite a
bit of the ball early, while Wells and Flowerday
were also influential for the Gryphs . Rupo finished
off the quarter strongly to trail by five points at
quarter time .
The game continued to go from end to end in thesecond quarter, as both teams' defences stood
quite resolute, with Monash's Roche, Brett
Coxhead, and Baxter in particular asserting
themselves on the game . Clark bagged a brace ofgoals, and indeed the Gryphs extended their
quarter time lead by this amount to be in front by
17 points at the main break.
After both teams began the third quarter unable toconvert their opportunities, Rupertswood started
to get back into the game courtesy of a Klaaysen
goal from a 25 metre penalty, which was followed
up quickly by another goal to put the men fromSunbury within five points . Watson goaled for the
Gryphs after an end to end passage of play that
was all Monash, before Klaaysen scored another
six pointer from a very tight angle right on thesiren to bring the deficit back to six points .
Rupertswood by now had gathered up a fair headof steam and that momentum saw them peg theGryphons' lead back to a point, then level, thenbriefly take the lead after the Gryphonssurrendered a rushed behind . The gamecontinued to be a dour struggle until, with 20
seconds left on the clock,Tim Gilchrist gathere dthe ball and, under terrific defensive pressure, putit through the big sticks to give the Gryphs a fivepoint lead, which turned out to be the final margin .There was some consolation for Rupo in thereserves, however, as they scored a 65 point winover Swinburne .GRAND FINAL PREVIEWWell, this is the essence of which, let's say, nine
months of hard work on and off the track by theplayers, coaching staff, committees and
volunteers, boils down to . The best two teams
have fought their way through the home and away
season and lead up finals, clinching promotion onthe way, to play off for the ultimate prize for any
team, and indeed, any player .
Neither side has yet to savour premiership success
at senior level, but have experienced the bittertaste of defeat in the big one, with Swinburne
losing to Syndal Tally Ho in the D4 title decider in
2001, while the Gryphs'only previous Grand Final
saw them go down to Hawthorn Amateurs in the

although the Razorbacks have comfortably beaten
the Gryphons in each of their three games thisseason, they would not be resting on their laurels
come the biggest game of the year. There was quite
a Swinburne presence at the Preliminary Final,
both to lend support to their reserves side, as well
as finding out who their opponents in the GrandFinal would be . They seemed pretty confident,
watching the game, having a bit of a kick, although
I was surprised that glamour full forward Jason
Murchie wasn't in cotton wool, wearing a t-shirt
saying "Don't Touch The Murch" to minimize a BobPratt circa 1934 final series scenario.
Look out for Holland to line up on Murchie, if
available, as The Dutchman had the better of the
Swinburne full-forward last time out . Other
dangermen for the Razorbacks up forward include
Higgins and Milano, and it is these multiple
options which would cause Gryphons coach Jack
McDonald the most concern, as they are morethan capable of picking up the slack if Murchie is
well held . The Gryphs do have some firepower of
their own, however in the shape of Malone, so it
won't be a holiday for the Swinburne defence by
any means, either. Both sides also have influential playmaking half-backs in Wells (Monash) and Fragiacomo (Swinny),who for mine has probably been the mostoutstanding players I've seen this season. Theycould well be the barometer of their team'sperformance, such is their importance . Watch outalso for the captain's clash between Albert(Swinburne) and Bourbon (Gryphons) in themiddle, as well as other on-ballers such as Fidlerand Whiting (Swinburne) and Flowerday an d

Gilchrist (Monash) . What could really decide theoutcome, however, is the ruck contest betweenRowan Coxhead (Gryphs) and Chris Farrington(Razorbacks), two of the better ruckmen in thecompetition this season.OK, time for me to pick a winner, and I think givencurrent form and past results, it's hard to overlookSwinburne, despite the record of Monash over thelast three or so months, which certainly airi tshabby. So Swinburne it is, by 21 points .In the reserves, I'll take Werribee to win .

After 21 weeks of gruelling, intriguing and
entertaining D4 action, the cream has risen to th etop, and the best teams of the season have made it t o
the Grand Final and subsequent D3 promotion .
What this has meant though . is that it has delivered
D4 one of the most even games in some years in thebattle for premiership glory.
ReviewIt was a tight and tense opening to the SeniorPreliminary final, however, it was Albert Park who
started the better of the two teams . Unfortunately,
the Falcons could not put this dominance onto thescoreboard and after hitting the post twiee .
Mt .Lilydale hit back with a goal of their own to take
the lead . With Julian Storey strong in the ruck andAndy Fleming strong in the packs, the Falcons didmanage to get a couple of their own back and
subsequently went into the first quarter break with
their noses in front .
The second quarter was all the Dales, and withRhodes"gaining the upper hand in the rucking duels, they managed to kick the next three majors for the
game. In the back line . Mount's Carstens and
Flanagan were miserly as they restricted thenormally potent Falcon forward line to one goal for
the quarter . In the meantime, the Dales kicked
another three to go into half time with a handy 5-goal
lead .With star forward Sean Allen on the bench injuredfor Albert Park after half time, the situation was grimfor the Falcons, however, some good play from Jason
Simcocks, Jodie Taylor and Brad Tuite allowedShaun Venables and Julian Storey to kick the nexttwo and the lead was reduced to three goals .
This was as close as the Falcons got though, asRoberts and Hayes regained the ascendancy forMount in the final quarter as they went on a goal-
kicking spree to run out comfortable 59-point
winners .In the Reserves Preliminary final, North
Brunswick was able to break away to an early lead .
With the efforts of Boudoloh and Duson providing
plenty of opportunities to Sorleto in the forward line,North went into the first break three goals in front .
The second quarter sawa more even contestwith Steve Garci a
stron gNick Pastras getting plenty of the ball up front for
Albert Park, however, the Falcons were unable
t make a dent in the North lead. It was the same story
in the third quarter as the strong North Brunswickdefence of Mountney and Salloum restricted the
Falcon's scoring chances . The final quarter sau
North outscore a gallant Falcon team to go into the
grand final with a 32-point win .
PreviewSeniors - IJHS-VU versus Mt . LilydaleAs I mentioned earlier, the two most deserving teame
have made it to the Grand Final, and now that the are there, it is going to be a monumental battle t c
decide who will go home with D4 premiership glory .
Mt.Lilvdale have re-found their lost form last weel+against Albert Park, however, they will need to takeanother step up if they are to reverse the floggin€
they got two weeks ago at the hands of the studentsThis time around, it will be UHS who have had <
week's rest, and given their rampant form in thamatch two week's ago, Mount will need to produ
c something special if they are to threaten.UHS's goal kicking prodigy, Tate is on the verge of hi :
100th goal for the season, and this could provid

additional motivation for the straight shooting
forward, not that he should need it . However, there
was a marked improvement in the Dales back linelast week and they will be hell bent on restricting his
shots on goal . Ultimately, this is where I believe thematch will be won or lost and should Mount continue
this form into today's match, it could be the
difference .Tipping a winner is an extremely difficult task, andit's a decision that I have lamented on for a couple of
days. Both teams are in good form, have quality lists
and would both be deserving winners . However, there
can only be one, and today I think Uni High School's
fresh legs should see them home to win by 8 points .
RESERVES - UHS-VU versus No rt h Brunswic k
As was the case in the seniors, the two best Reserves
teams for the year have made the Grand Final .
Today's game is North's third grand final appearancein four years, and given that the club has not
succeeded in any of these, there will be plenty ofmotivation for them to break the drought . On the
other hand, the students have proven to all and
sundry they are a class outfit, and will be hoping toset the tone for the day for what could be a magical
day for the "Green and Tan" .
The likes of Boudoloh, Burrows and Cutler could beplaying their final match for North, today and thiswill give the rest of their team mates extra desire to
succeed, however, this can only take you so far .
In their Semi Final two weeks ago, North's forwardline was the key and if the ball can get down to them
quickly from players like Russo, Duson and Lattoufthen the game could be beyond Uni High .
Once again picking a winner is difficult and I think
the result will be a real nail biter . At the end of the
day though, it will come down to sheer desire as towho will take out the game and in this regard, I
believe it will be North who will want it more .
Therefore I am tipping them to win by the narrowest
of margins, 1 point.
Team of the YearThank you to everyone who sent in nominations andafter much thought, I have penned who I believe to
be the D4 team of the year. While you may not all

Under 19 Section 1Carpe Diem! In a season that is 21 matches long, today
is the day reputations will be forged, and a new slice of
history carved. It is fitting the two best sides have
earned the right for a tilt at the title. Gentlemen, play
well, play hard, and play fair. Seize and enjoy the
moment, for you may not have another opportunity
again !
Review UNIVERSITY BLUES v OLD XAVERIANS
Preliminary Final U/ 19 S1With the ground a little patchy, the weather was fine
and warm; a welcome contrast from the previous week's
miserable conditions . With Bradley prominent early, the
Blues quickly shifted into gear and transferred the ball
rapidly and skilfully from end to end, opening up a
handy first quarter lead . The second stanza was more of
the same, with Xavs finding it difficult to penetrate the
resilient Uni . defence, whilst up forward Heinz and
McKerrow proved strong targets .
A couple of sensational Xavs goals, including one to
Rush, in the third, couldn't prevent Uni . from extending
the margin, and finally the Blues coasted to a
comfortable and well deserved victory . McPhail and
Meagher amongst the best .

final with a 94point victory
over Beaumaris
at Scammell
Reserve . Unbeaten for fifteen weeks before their semi-
final loss to old Melburnians, Werribee ensured victory
with a nine goal to nothing second quarter, Lee kicking
five for the winners, and Chalmers four. Amassing forty-
five scoring shots to sixteen, Werribee showed no signsof a side that were comprehensively run over the top of
in the final term last week, a morale-boosting victory the
perfect remedy for a team that will now face OMs for the
second time in three weeks .

Final U/ 19 S 2The two form sides of the competition go head to head
this Saturday afternoon as Old Melburnians meetWerribee in the Section Two Grand Final at Scammell
Reserve . Benefiting from an extra week on the track and
the luxury of a near-full list to choose from, OldMelburnians will go into this weekend's game confident
they can knock off the minor premiers once more,
having beaten Werribee both early in the home-and-
away season, and in the second semi-fmal two weeks
ago. Lacking match-practice towards the tail-end of the
season, Werribee undoubtedly benefited from last
weekend's preliminary final, the game not only acting as
a morale-booster but also giving the side a chance to
prove their fitness over four quarters of football . In a
game likely to be won in the midfield, the Russo
brothers will again need to play another inspired four
quarters of football for Werribee, as will OM's captain
Wettenhall, who topped off an impressive season b}
finishing third in the competition's best and fairest
With little between the sides, Old Melburnians coaclOwen Lalor concedes "the best thing about thi :
weekend is that the two teams that deserve to be ther,
are playing . We've had three really good games agains
each other this year, and hopefully this weekend ma
k for another good game of footy and a great grand final.
Old Melburnians by seven points .

ruF AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2C
Two weeks ago in the Second Semi, Uni . failed to
capitalise on early scoring opportunities and despite alate charge rally, the minor premiers were in command
for most of the day . The Bernie's have enjoyed a week's
break and will be chomping at the bit" to record
another victory and complete a wonderful undefeated
season . However, the Blues have tested them in each of
their three meetings. Uni are well drilled, boast a
miserly disciplined defence and strong focal points
whose size on a dry day, may trouble their opponents.
However, teams don't finish three games clear withouttheir own strike weapons and the influence of Hooper,
and leading goal scorer Pitts, must be held, along with
SB fleet of small men, if the Blues are to prevail . A minor
upset is more than possible; however, the Bernie's have
justified their favouritism tag, and will raise the J .S Mc
Cann Cup .
Section 2Review WERRIBEE vs BEAUMARIS Preliminary Final
U/19 S2Minor premiers Werribee recovered from a shock loss
last weekend, booking a spot in this Saturday's grand
Collegians at Preston City Oval . In a game Old Carey
virtually dominated from the start, the pre-match
favourites amassed thirty-six scoring shots to just five,
holding Collegians scoreless in both the second and
fourth quarters . Old Carey coach Craig Williams admits
"it probably was nearly out best four quarterperformance for the year, there were no passengers, all
twenty-two of our boys put their hands up and had a
real go . Our backline was solid all day, we had good run
throughout the midfield, which gave our forwards every
opportunity ." Angus and Howat both kicked two for the
winners, while Trumbull, Bowlerv and Niven were
named as best .Preview RUPERTSWOOD vs OLD CAREY Grand Final
U/19 S3Minor premiers Rupertswood meet Old Carey this
Sunday afternoon, in the Section Three Grand Final at
Preston City Oval. A highly anticipated replay of the
second semi-final, in which Rupertswood were
triumphant by thirteen points, Old Carey enter thegame off the back of a comprehensive preliminary final
victory, the side looking to knock off Rupertswood for
the first time this year and in doing so claim the section
three premiership . Both sides have been near faultless
this season ; Rupertswood remain undefeated despite
coming within several points of a loss on a number of
occasions, while Old Carey have systematically
thrashed every team they've played, with the exception
of Rupertswood. Old Carey coach Craig Williams admits
the game will be won in the midfield, however it is more
likely Carey will be most reliant on their forwards to
reverse an inaccurate trend . Kicking 5 .15 and 5 .17 in
losses to Rupertswood, Old Carey have struggled to put
the ball between the two big sticks, having matched thetop side in every department bar goal kicking on their
previous three meetings . Williams concedes
"Rupertswood are a good side, a very even side with
strong on-ballers that team well, but they have a lot of
expectation on their shoulders . We'll enter the game
with a relaxed frame of mind, and just try to get back to
playing the kind of footy that made us successful this
year. If we get our match ups right, I'm expecting us to
put up a really good fight, and if we can play as well as
we did last Sunday . I reckon we can give it a really good
crack ." Old Carey by four points .

what seemed an unassailable 34
point advantage midway through thesecond period, only to see the JOC's

lead in the third term, edging out to
a seven point break at the final change . A thrilling
ending saw the Tigers reclaim the lead three times,
before they were finally able to withstand the last of the
JOC's challenges and prevail . Goals to Maddocks and
strong performances from Laver and Waters helping
SBM earn a shot at premiership glory .
