Q LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS

BLACKS HOLD ON FOR 3-PT W INORMOND'S LATE BID JUST FAILS

ST. BERNARD'S F IN ISH SWAMPS CAULFIELDBy GEORGE McTAGGART

University Blacks kept themselves in the fight for the four with a winover Ormond last week, but they just held on long enough to score by threepoints .

Caulfield Grammarians also looked as if they could keep their final fourhopes alive when they led St . Bernard's for three quarters, but they had nocounter for St. Bernard's last quarter effort which brought nine goals andan easy win .

Old Scotch trounced Reservoir Old Boys and Collegians scored a surprisewin over Ivanhoe in a topsy-turvy B Section .

The Blacks were much more im-pressive than Ormond for three quar-ters and looked to be set for a goodwin when they led by 5 goals at three-quarter-time .

They had outpaced and out-thoughtOrmond, handled the very heavy con-ditions well and they were able topick up the ball and keep it movingfar better than the home side .

But Ormond threw everything intoa supreme last quarter effort and itvery nearly succeeded . However theBlacks managed to hold them out andscored narrowly in a thrilling finish .

Caulfield just shaded St . Bernard'sin a very even game - they were 10points in front at the first change, one point to the good at the intervaland 6 points in front at three-quarter-time, but St . Bernard's raced rightaway in the final term and won by38 points .

North Old Boys gained a break onUniversity Blues in the second quarterand were not troubled to score by 27points.

Marcellin "jumped" Old Trinity inthe first quarter and although Trinityshaped better in the second half, theywere never in the game.THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - July 23, 1977

De La Salle looked to be coastingto an easy win over Coburg, but Co-burg hit back in the last quarter andwent down by only 15 points .

Old Scotch gained a, firm grip ontop place when they beat Reservoir bymore than 9 goals, but their play waspatchy. They were helped by Colle-gians who beat an inaccurate Ivanhoeby 7 points . It was Ivanhoe's secondsuccessive defeat.

Geelong crashed against Old Mel-burnians, going down by 32 points ina low-scoring game and Monash Bluescrept closer to the four with a 19-point win over St . Kilda CBC .

AJAX were too good for Old Xav-erians, their accurate kicking (18-7)giving them a 23-point win . Fawknerthrashed Hampton Rovers, Old Ivan-hoe surprised Parkside, and Mel-bourne High had their first win .

Old Camberwell beat Power Houseby 5 points, and Alphington were toostrong for Old Brighton .Bulleen-Templestowe crashed against

St. Bede's and unbeaten HamptonRovers Juniors had a close callagainst Geelong .

PREVIEWINGTODAY'S GAIMVIES

A SECTIONI guess I'm not academic enough to work

out the form of the University teams -first the Blues' and now the Blacks' quickrevival has upset my tipping skill, whichputs me under considerable pressure today.

The Blacks can establish themselves as apremiership threat if they pull off the big-gest turn-up of the season to date - awin at home against North Old Boys .

And if they lose, it's goodbye to any finalfour hopes .

Ross Perrett, Nick Burne and "Harry"Costello are providing the backbone to amore successful University Blacks side. TheNorth machine, led by many stars includ-sng Mauro Borcich, Gil Ould and Mark Han-nebery, are still grinding their opponentsinto the mud .

I will be surprised if North don't slip upsomewhere between now and September 17th .I haven't a clue when this slip will occur(if it does), but today could be the day .I'll take a punt - University Blacks towan - by how much (?) - say sevenpoints .

Ormond will find Marcellin difficult atMarcellin, particularly with John Gartnerplaying at his top . Bruce Bourne's goal-kicking potential has been contained inrecent weeks, but I still think the nmpont-ance of the win will give Ormond thepoints .

Coburg and Old Trinity - much as I'dlike to see Trinity break the ice, Coburgwill be too good .

Caul fi eld Grammarians were on target lastweek but will have too much talent and ex-perience for University Blues - (tongue incheek) !

That leaves me the other main one atElsternwick Park - St. Bernard's and DeLa Salle . "De La" may just have slippeda little, while St . Bernard's coach "Gus"Mitchell has his team developing towardsthe business end of the season .

It may seem cranky to tip against the twotop teams, (North and De La Salle), butI fancy St . Bernard's.

SELECTIONS : Ormond, University Blacks,Caulfield Grammarians, Coburg, St. Bern-ard's - JIM FIDGE .

B SECTIONAnother round of upsets has transpired,

at least as far as I am concerned. All Ican be sure of is that Laurie Aghan is allsmiles whilst Ian Davis would be far fromhappy at this point in time .

Old Melburnians and Reservoir meet ina key game that could well decide fourthplace . Rover Ray Shepherd has had a magni-ficent season for Reservoir whilst ruckm'anRohan Brown has done likewise for O .M.'s .

Last week "Turk" Urquhart obviously con-

tribu!ted heavily to the Navy Blues' hugescore

Ofbehinds . I must lean towards

Melburnians, who have the greater depth ofability, to score the points .

Geelong, now firmly esconsed in the hotseat meet Monash Blues, who have a chancefor the four . There is a strong suggestionthat the brothers Anderson, Moore, Bick-ford and Olding acknowledged to be theirstrength are all in current good form whilstGeelong do not have itheir stars firing atthe moment.

The battle of the light blues could wellgo Monash's way.

Despite their excellent win over Ivanhoe,Collegians have the job ahead of themagainst Old Scotch . Led by ruckman ChrisRoach and Ian Rice, the young Collegianswill surely test the Cardinals.

However the experience of John Morgan,John Anderson and Bruce Kefford shouldensure four valuable points and the doublechance for Old Scotch .

Old Haileybury won the first round gameagainst St. Kilda C .B .C . by dent of accuratekicking and nine weeks later, there still doesnot appear to be much between the sides.Haileybury impress me as having a leaningtowards finer conditions, and, as they playat home where these conditions prevail Ifavour them as narrow winners.

Ivanhoe have had their boots on thewrong feet of late to compound the prob-lem of itheir star playeirs being out of form .

This does not argue well for their clashwith Old Paradians whose top players are allputting in good performances of late. Theever reliable Kohut, should give Paradiansenough use of the ball to notch a win.

SELECTIONS: Old Melburnians, MonashBlues, Old Scotch, Old Haileyburians, OldParadians - ALF KEAM .

C SECTION

Muddy conditions still prevail an d reflect-ing on last Saturday's tips, I almost incitedmy own downfall . The underdogs really"barked" back and caused some major up-sets .

Very pleased to see Melbourne High cracktheir first 4 points - th ey have been hardbattlers .

AJAX put in another bid for th e doublechance in disposing of Old Xaverians - agreat win .

Parkside still can't perform away fromhome and they are going to find Kew atough proposition - even though it's ahome game .

It's hard to select against Kew who haveimproved greatly - still, if Parkside haveany desperation in them, now is the timeto produce It, if they are to stay in thefour. I'm giving them another chance.

Old Xaverians with their points re-instatedare just clinging on to second spot. Thedouble chance is a great incentive and Ibelieve they will beat Old Carey today.

Hampton Rovers, another home loving side, take on Old Ivanhoe, who won well lastSaturday . The Rovers also need a win tokeep alive their finals hopes - I'm goingfor them to win it .

Page 4 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - July 23, 1977

AJAX should be "lock 'o' Hoop" afterlast week's good win, As long as complanc-ency doesn't creep in, they should win,,gainst UHSOB .

MHSOB elated with their win take onFawkner . It could be a "David and Goliath",however Fawkner are the team to beat - Ifeel one will see them in front at sirentime .

My Selections are:- Parkside, Old Xaver-ians, Hampton Rovers, Ajax, Fawkner -ALEX JOHNSON .

D SECTIO NThe four seems to be settling down some-

what with Alphington and St. Kevin's clearin first and second. Old Brighton and OldCamberwell are also games clear . PowerHouse had a chance to put the pressureon Old Camberwell and from the scoreslast week nearly succeeded .

This week Assumption meet Old Brightonwhich could be a close) match, but I thinkOld Brighton will win out in the end .

Alphington at home to Power House andthe visitors must win this to keep anyfinal hopes alive but I can't see 'them win-ning .

Elsternwick play La Trobe Blacks andshould have no real problems here .

Old Geelong and Old Camberwell, thisgame should pose no problems for the vis-itors and this win will virtually seal thecomposition of the final four .

In the last game of the day St, Kevin'swill have a win over State Bank .

SELECTIONS : Old Brighton, Alphington ,Elsternwick, Old Camberwell, St. Kevin's -KEITH FINDLAY .

E SECTIONNorth Brunswick v Old Mentonians at

North Brunswick is a game that could spellilxe doom of Old Mentonians for this sea-son .

The visitors will be unable to matchNorth in strength, which is a greater assetthan pace with the grounds in their presentcondition .

Brunswick will provide the venue fortheir game with West Brunswick, but Westshould provide the entertainment for thespectators . West to win comfortably.

National Bank and ANZ Bank at Oval 14should enable A .N .Z . to keep well clear ofrelegation and to stay within reach of amiracle. Maintain hope is my advice an d

I~p out of the centre of the ground-Beverley Hills and Heatherton at Don-

castor is a problem game. Neither team hasperformed as consistently as they shouldnor are they genuine contenders for theflag .

I think that Heatherton should win andthey have a show of promotion to D Sec-tion if they get stuck into the game forfour quarters .

SELECTIONS:- North Brunswick, WestBrunswick, ANZ Bank, Heatherton - SYDWHITFIELD .

F SECTIO NThe final plot thickens weekly in F Sec-

tion. Last week's results enabled me tocling to the tipping tally lead, although logic

proved me wrong at Mentone where the lead-ers crashed.

Today leaders Bulleen-Templestowe meetthe rejuvenated Commonwealth Bank . Topposition (at least on points) is at stake .Last week's reversal will serve to make thecombine aware of the hard work necessaryto win promotion .

Bank are going along consistently in sec-ond position, but I favour Bulleen Temple-stowe to take the points as a resu.rt of theiroverall strength around the ground .

Two disappointing sides in Glenroy andUniversity Reds clash at Glenroy . The los-er seems destined to have a mortgage onthe dreaded "Wooden Spoon" . StatisticallyGlenroy appear stronger and their homeground will be an advantage. They shouldtake the points .

St . Bede's make the long journey to playFootscray Tech. The loser may well be theside to miss the finals . Last week St . Bede'sshowed the~, can win under pressure . Havethey obliterated memories of 1976 with onewin? The answer could well be seen today .

The St. Bede's defence has proven itselfscond to none in the competition . Theirforward line led by Allen and Collins shouldconvert sufficient opportunities to win thegame and push Footscray out of the four.

Thornbury travel to Monash Whites, thestudents will await their visitors enthusiasti-cally. Monash realize they have a slim finalschance if they continue to win . HoweverThornbury will be anxious to move into, thetop bracket with four games to play and Iselect them .

Bulleen United journey to the big La TrobeReds ground . The ground size will testUnited's fitness especially as their recentform has not shown evidence of a four quar-ter effort. However their strength and skillshould ensure they take the points andkindle their final four ambitions .

SELECTIONS : Bulleen-Templestowe, Glen-roy, St . Bede's, Thornbury, Bulleen United- NORM NUGENT .

JUNIOR SECTION 1Ivanhoe will welcome the chance of a

breather after last weeks struggle againstthe tenacious Old Scotch side . Coburg willnot cause Ivanhoe to extend themselves toany great extent and will be well behindat the finish of the game .

University Blacks will run headlong intoa very confident Monash University sidewho are making a great late run to playin the finals, while the Blacks have theireyes on the double chance. This should be areal fierce game right to the closing stages .

I!tip the Blacks to win as they shouldprove a little more steady under pressureand have the added advantage of playing athome.

Another vital game will be played betweenOrmond and Old Scotch . Scotch will winas they have a great desire to be part ofthe finals series and must win this game astheir run home is a difficult one, a losstoday would be very hard to overcome.

Ormond must not be taken lightly as

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - July 23, 1977 Page 5

Page 4: THE AMATE FOOTBA...tribu!ted heavily to the Navy Blues' huge score Of behinds. I must lean towards Melburnians, who have the greater depth of ability, to score the points. Geelong,

they have the capabilities of causing anupset if they are treated in that manner .

St . Bernard's will defeat North Old Boysand just about clinch the double chancefor themselves while North will be in avery precarious position to maintain a finalsberth .

SELECTIONS : Ivanhoe, University Blacks,Old Scotch, St . Bernard's - CLIFF BAS-TOW .

JUNIOR SECTION 2Your correspondent appears to be showing

some form at the right time of the seasonand picked the card last week, even thoughone game was on a forfeit. Now it is nec-essary to continue making enough correctselections to wrest the lead from NormNugent. Looking at today's draw, this maybe a most difficult task .

When Alphington forfeited a game earlierthis year, they came out the following weekand defeated Kew . However, their visit toWest Brunswick today will not result inthe same good fortune, as the boys fromWest must win to keep alive their chancesof appearing in the finals.

The game at Kew should be a real crowdpleaser as Melbourne High were the sidethat gave Kew their first win . The Highboys will be keen to make amends, butKew appear to have more form and aremy selection .

The match of the day should be De LaSalle at home to Hampton Rovers. "De La"were orginally my favourites for the flag, but the boys from Roverland look as if theywill take all before them and finish theyear as champions This game will be ,a pre-view of the Grand Final and I am stayingwith the Rovers .

Caulfield Grammarians are two games andpercentage outside the Four, with five gamesto go, which will provide their players withlittle incentive, particularly after their longtrip to Geelong . The home side were beat-en last week by Hampton but will makeamends today.

Old Paradians play host to their neigh-bouring side Reservoir Old Boys and willfind the visitors too strong.

SELECTIONS : West Brunswick, Kew,Hampton Rovers, Geelong, Reservoir OldBoys - PETER NATHAN .

COMBINE MAN REACHES 15 0Paul Lockhart plays his 150th game, for

Bulleen-Templestowe today. "Locky" as heis affectionately known, was best and fair-est in the club last year. He plays in thecentre and creates many opportunities withhis pace and sure delivery of the ball . Allat Bulleen-Temp. wash him all the best fortoday and the future.

Congratulations to Laurie Blampied onplaying 50 games for Uni . High . Laurie be-gan with the club in 1973 but has not playedall games due to working. He is presentlydoing an engineering degree, this being hisfinal year . We wish him well with that andhis football future with the club . Well doneLaurie .

UMPIRES CORNE RGOAL UMPIRE S

After being given the "all clear" or" 'touched all clear" by the fi eld umpire thegoal umpire is the sole judge of a score .(In some competitions where independentgoal umpires are not available, the control.ling body empowers the field umpire to overrule a goal umpire .)

The goal umpire cannot register a scoreuntil he has received "all clear" from thefi eld umpire . Although the goal umpire isthe sole judge of a score he should notregister a goal if thel fi eld umpire has cal-led "touched - all clear" .

If the ball makes contact with a playerbelow the knee is can be regarded as havingbeen kicked.

GOALS - subject to the field umpiresignalling "all clear" a goal is scoredwhen the ball is kicked over the goal lineby a player of the attacking side withoutthe ball ;touching a player or goal post.

A goal can be score(d when a ball kickedhigh in the air completely crosses thegoal line, without having been touched, andis blown back by the wind and strikes thegoal post or is blown back into th e playingarena .

BEHINDS - subject to the field umpire'ssignal a behind is scored when the hal l1 . Completely crosses the behind line with-

out touching the behind post .2 . Strikes a goal post including the back

of rthe goal post.3 . Passes over a goal post.4 . Is touched by a player of either side

before it completely crosses over the goalor behind lines .

5 . Is carried over the goal or behind lineby a player of either side ,

6. Is handballed over the goal or behind lineby a player of either side .

To register a score the ball must becompletely over the goal or behind line nomatter whether it is in the air or on theground .

A warm welcome back is extended toStuart Stockdale by all members of OldTrinity . Stuart recently returned from acouple of months overseas sojourn duringwhich he achieved some notority by hav-ing his face flashed across the televisionscreen during the recent Jubilee Test atLords . Whilst in England however, Stuartalso kept up with his football and was amember of he victorious Victorian teamwho beat a South Australian XVIII at Kings-ton Park. It was good to see on his returnthat he has lost none of his goal-kickingability, scoring 3 goals in his first gameback at full-forward for the seconds againstMarcellin .

THE

250 UP TO NORTH PRESIDENTLes Murray played his first game for North

Old Boys against Old Camberwell Grammar-ians on May 1 1th 1963 . Today he will play his250th game .

Fifteen seasons of first XVIII amateurfootball in itself represents outstanding ser-vice to a club, but Les Murray has donemuch more than that for North Old Boys.

As a player, he has been vice-captain from1965-1969, captain from 1970 to 19772, bestand fairest in 1965 and 1969, leading goal-kicker on nine occasions, and a V.A.F.A .representative in 1966, 1968 and 1969 . Inboth of the past two seasons he hasmanaged 60 goals from the half forwar dflank and has a career total of close to750.

As an administrator, he has been a mem-ber of the committee since 1964, and Pr eesi-dent since 1975, and the fact that Northhave played in the last two A Sectiongrand finals stems from his excellent lead-ership.

Now 34 years of age Les Murray may wellbe playing his last season . Other playersmay have managed as many games but nonecould have served his club better . For thewhole of his senior football career Leshas made a total commitment to his cluband amateur football .

Well played Les from all North Old Boysand amateur footballers.

DOUBLE CENTURY TO CAREY PLAYERAll associated with Old Carey offer hearty

congratulations to veteran Roger Morganwho played his 290th game for the clubagainst Kew last Saturday . Roger is a keenclubman and despite many family committ-ments has made several comebacks to parti-cipate in active football . He is a cool cleandedicated player who always gives 100 min-utes of football and plenty of encourage-ment to juniors . The Morgan family havebeen keen supporters of the club over manyyears and the ~twin brothers John and Rog-er both played at the same time . We allhope Roger has many games ahead of him .

CENTURY AT ST . KEVIN' SPeter Hart plays his 100th game for St.

Kevin's O.B . today. He started with theclub, fresh from school, in 1970, and inhis first five years played on the half-backline, on the half-forward line and on theball in about equal proportions. But thisyear, after a welcome return from Uni .Blues, Peter has settled into the full-backline and has added a touch of A-Grade classto what has become a really tight defence .I overheard Les Radford say, "It's goodto play alongside "Harty" : There's alwayssomething on" . By which he didn't meanany sort of football funny business, butrather, creative, constructive and attackingteam play. Well done, Pete .

150 TO OLD BRIGHTON OLD TIMERCongratulations to Old Brighton's Barry

Hamilton who plays his long awaited 150thgame today and by doing so, becomes amember of, the very select group of 'OldMen' playing for the club of course, therehave been cynical and ill-mannered rumourscirculating that "Bud" has already attainedthis 'honour', but his present good formbelies any such insinuations . If any furtherproof is required, one only has to realisethat he is still developing new skills, par-ticularly those of an interchange special-ist . Who said you can't teach an old dognew tricks? But in -truth, Barry has givenOld Brighton great service over many yearsas both a highly skilled player and clubSecretary, and we all congratulate, him onhis notable achievement .
