    An alternative approach to education

    What is The Alternative School?

Now in our fourth year, The Alternative School (known as TAS) was setup to offer alternative education for those young people who are notmaking progress within a school environment.

We are different because we are able to offer a totally unique andflexible programme that is tailored around the specific needs of each

    individual young person.

Young people are referred to TAS from a variety of places includinglocal schools, Y.P.S., PRUs, Police, Youth Offending Team, Social Services,Family Support and often self referral from friends or other youngpeople that they know. Each young person referred to TAS will work toa timetable that has been designed around them, has also been designedwith their input and is 100% personal to that young person. Thetimetable will vary greatly for each young person and will include a highpercentage of one-to-one work with additional team projects andactivities to help build confidence, team working and social skills.

Each young person will have the opportunity to build their ownportfolio, partake in both indoor and outdoor activities and achievequalifications and certificates that are relevant to them.

At TAS we aim to take a more holistic approach and support both thepersonal and educational needs of young people, helping them toovercome a wide range of barriers and develop themselves into wellrounded young individuals.

    Our Principles

The TAS strategy is built on five principles:

    1) Support

We will stick with helping young people even when they are at their most challenging. We will hang in there and support and guide them into making positive life choices.Sometimes it is a long process and young people need to know that we will always be available to support them.

    2) Educate

We will provide a unique, individualised, FUN and enjoyable, yet challenging and rewarding education experience of the highest attainable standard.

    3) Encourage Independence

We will concentrate on encouraging young people to take responsibility for their own learning and personal development by helping them to build their own unique portfolioof achievements, experiences, enabling them to see their own true worth. We will support all TAS young people through the difficult transition stage from school onto lifepost 16, whether into full-time education, training or employment and will continue this support throughout their journey for as long as it is required.

    4) Inspire and MotivateWe believe that ALL young people can achieve fantastic results. We will help to facilitate this by providing relevant qualifications that are recognised by both employers andfurther education providers, supported by a wide range of adventurous outdoor activities and The Duke of Edinburghs Award that will help ensure TAS young peopleprogress into a positive place upon leaving. We believe in `life long learning` and will support this ethos by providing flexible and supportive learning packages, available for allyoung people, from all backgrounds.

    5) Partnership Working

We can not do all of this on our own, but need to work with and through others in order to multiply our impact.

The statements below define the activities we will undertake in pursuit of our vision-

We will:Create and deliver an alternative curriculum for young people which is innovative, holistic, encourages positive progression and promotes independence.Provide advice and support to young people, sign posting to other agencies whilst hand-holding through this process.Work only with organisations which work with young people to ensure they are listened to and their individual needs met.
