The Alternave für Deutschland (AfD): A Case Study in European Right-wing Populism Founded in 2013, the Alternave für Deutschland (AfD) garnered 12.6% of the vote in Germany’s 2017 federal elecons, making it the third largest party in the Bundestag. Yet how to classify the party ideologically has sparked lively debate among politcal sciensts. By offering a systemac analysis of the AfD’s ideology and how that ideology is expressed in pracce, this presentaon argues that the AfD is best categorized as a populist, radical-right party, alongside European peers like Austria’s Freedom Party (FPÖ) and France’s Naonal Front (FN).
