THE RUNNER-UP (THE ACTUAL WINNER) FOR OUR
GROUP IS. .• Although the film was not about Tomei’s character, she played anessential role. Her portrayal of Joe Pesci’s foul-mouthed, scene-stealing girlfriend was perfect. She was the dutiful woman that in theend was the support system Vinny needed, but at the same time wasstrong minded and to the point.
• Tomei enjoys independent female roles and that shows in this film.Without her, Vinny could not have succeeded. She is his voice ofreason that brings focus in a situation where it is very apparent thishe is completely out of his league. And even though her objective isto support her man, she also has a secondary long-term objective ofwanting to get married. Her obstacle however is her timing is so badsince Vinny keeps messing up the trial, ends up in jail at every turn, and has all this pressure on him to save two innocent kids, but shecan’t stop her biological clock.
• Her comedic ability to not play the joke but instead play thecharacter makes her performance award winning. The truth she finds inher character’s reality makes the character real instead of acaricature version of a person. The audience can empathize with hersituation as well as laugh along with her making her accessible to awide audience.
THE WINNER(OUR ALTERNATIVE) FOR OUR GROUP IS. .
• Miranda Richardson assumes the role of a wife and mother in a most believable manner. While not shown for the majority of the film. She brings the appropriate mood and emotion to her character.
• When she cries and she is angry, the audience can feel her sadness and her pain. Richardson brings life to a fictional character.
• She is accurate in her portrayal of a protective mother and adds depth to her character with all the emotions she exerts in her scenes.
• Her role in the film is relatively small, but when she is on screen it is hard to miss her. She hits her marks on the emotions that are needed to heighten the drama in particular scenes. And when she is not on screen, the audience may begin to wonder how Richardson’s character would feel and react if she knew the events that where taking place.
• -Richardson leaves the audience empathizing with her character, and this is one aspect that makes her a great actor. This is the reason why our group thinks Miranda Richardson should have been the actual Academy Award winner.
