TouchMath Module Overview

Overview of ContentThis module focuses on Adding with Strategies. The strategies include the commutative property, doubles, building 10 (associative property), easier sums, counting on (using TouchPoints), and multiples of 10. Fact families, multiple experiences with numbers, missing addends, and TouchPoints as visual/kinesthetic cues are all incorporated to provide students with alternative approaches for mastering sums. Word problems and comparisons are used consistently throughout this module. When students finish this module, they will be able to consistently apply strategies that are meaningful to them.

First Grade Common Core State Standards• 1.OA.1. Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking

from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

• 1.OA.2. Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

• 1.OA.3. Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract 3.• 1.OA.5. Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).• 1.OA.6. Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies

such as counting on; making ten; decomposing a number leading to a ten; using the relationship between addition and subtraction; and creating equivalent but easier or known sums.

• 1.OA.7. Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false.

Q&A: What are the differences between CCSS TouchMath and Classic TouchMath?

Not surprisingly, there are many questions about the similarities and differences between CCSS TouchMath and Classic TouchMath. This page is designed to help you make an informed decision regarding which program you may want to use in your classrooms, schools, or districts.

Q. What are the similarities between the two programs?

A. There are several similarities between the two programs, all based on the well-researched ways students learn and remember information:

1. Both programs take a scaffolded, one-step-at-a-time, approach to skill mastery.

2. Both programs are designed to progress from concrete > pictorial > abstract in each topic.

3. Both programs include the well-known visual cues (specifi c indicators for regrouping, arrows to indicate starting columns, dotted lines to separate columns, place value indicators)

4. Both programs present larger than average numerals to ensure success for young learners.

Q. What are the differences between the two programs?

A. The single greatest difference between the two programs is the CCSS programs are built on the Common Core State Standards and the TouchMath Classic programs are not. This means:

1. In the CCSS programs, each page at each grade level is directly coordinated with the standards expected to be taught. The teaching manuals in these programs have one-day-at-a-time teaching instruction with specifi c goals and objectives, reinforcement activities, literature and real life connections. TouchMath Classic teaches the same variety of topics but not connected directly to the standards and not necessarily in the same order. The teaching manuals in TouchMath Classic programs are more generalized and conceptual because they are used with such a wide variety of students with differing disabilities.

2. The CCSS Programs contain a wide variety of approaches, including the TouchMath, to attack each topic, which exposes students to many ways to compute an answer. TouchMath Classic relies almost exclusively on the TouchMath approach, which excludes some other approaches but ensures that students always have at least one way to get the correct answer, an especially helpful approach for students with disabilities.
