Our faith is not just about ideas. It’s really about having an encounter with God and, in particular, the Risen Christ! Once we give ourselves over to the notion of God’s presence, we have to train ourselves to listen for God’s voice and be attentive to God’s call. Having companions on our faith journeys is so incredibly important as they can help us fine-tune our listening skills and discern God’s voice from others we may be hearing. Faith is all about having these profound encounters not only with God but with our brothers and sisters, and creation itself. Anyone or anything that is alive with God’s presence becomes an occasion for God to speak and call us to deeper graces and experiences. “Come, and you will see.” The example and teaching of Jesus, the lives of the saints, those living among us and those glorified in heaven, and the wonder and beauty of creation can all serve to help us listen more clearly and assist in positioning ourselves for this profound God meeting. It is an encounter that can quickly and easily lead to a friendship and intimate intertwining of our souls to their Maker, making a claim on us like no other. Then, the Word of God moves from being just a body of ideas to something we simply accept and do. The person of Jesus Christ swiftly moves from being just a good prophet in word and deed to the incarnate presence of God Himself, the Lamb of God. The voice leads us to the Person behind it. The Gospel is hard to follow. We can intellectually debate whether what Jesus said is really what we are asked to do. The Gospel ideas do not always make sense in our practical, secular world. The person of God always does. We can debate the practicality and sense of ideas and doing so often keeps the more difficult ones at a safe distance away from us. Jesus said to love our enemy, but we really don’t need to do that, our minds try to convince us. It just doesn’t make sense. Yet, if we are truly in love with the God who is behind the voice of those words, they make perfect sense. Our deep and intimate love of this God would even find us laying down our lives for Him if necessary. Speak Lord, your servant is listening.

Nuestra fe no se trata solo de ideas. ¡Se trata realmente de tener un encuentro con Dios y, en particular, con Cristo Resucitado! Una vez que nos entregamos a la noción de la presencia de Dios, tenemos que entrenarnos para escuchar la voz de Dios y estar atentos a su llamado. Tener compañeros en nuestros viajes de fe es increíblemente importante, ya que pueden ayudarnos a afinar nuestras habilidades para escuchar y a discernir la voz de Dios de otras personas que podamos estar escuchando. Entonces, la Palabra de Dios pasa de ser solo un cuerpo de ideas a algo que simplemente aceptamos y hacemos. La persona de Jesucristo pasa rápidamente de ser solo un

buen profeta de palabra y obra a la presencia encarnada de Dios mismo, el Cordero de Dios. La voz nos lleva a la Persona que está detrás.

El Evangelio es difícil de seguir. Podemos debatir intelectualmente si lo que Jesús dijo es realmente lo que se nos pide que hagamos. Las ideas del Evangelio no siempre tienen sentido en nuestro mundo práctico y secular. La persona de Dios siempre lo hace. Podemos debatir sobre la practicidad y el sentido de las ideas y hacerlo a menudo mantiene las más difíciles a una distancia segura de nosotros. Jesús dijo amar a nuestro enemigo, pero realmente no necesitamos hacer eso, nuestras mentes tratan de convencernos. Simplemente no tiene sentido. Sin embargo, si estamos verdaderamente enamorados del Dios que está detrás de la voz de esas palabras, tienen perfecto sentido. Nuestro amor profundo e íntimo por este Dios incluso nos encontraría entregando nuestras vidas por Él si fuera necesario. Habla Señor, tu siervo escucha.

One theme in our Readings for this Second Sunday in Ordinary Time is the call of God as an invitation to a transformed life. The prophet Samuel is able to discern the call of God through the help of Eli, the temple priest. After Samuel responds to the call, the Lord comes and remains with him. In the Gospel, Jesus is approached by two disciples of John the Baptist. Christ’s response “what are you looking for?” is telling, as he alone is ultimately capable of providing them with what they are in search of. After they express interest in where he is going, he welcomes them to stay (be in communion) with him. A true encounter with the Lord leads to spiritual union with him. When we abandon our own selfish ways in exchange for allowing God to reign in our lives, we embrace an infinitely better way-the very best way. Making this intentional choice will in turn lead to a deep transformation of our hearts, and place us well on our way to achieving a life of abundant love and peace.

Un tema en nuestras lecturas de este Segundo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario es el llamado de Dios como invitación a una vida transformada. El profeta Samuel logra discernir el llamado de Dios con la ayuda del sacerdote del templo, Elí. Después de Samuel responder la llamada, el Señor se acerca y permanece con él. En el Evangelio, dos discípulos de Juan el bautista se acercan a Jesús. Su respuesta “¿Que buscan?” es significativa, ya que solo él es ultimadamente capaz de proveer lo que en verdad buscan. Después de expresar interés acerca de su destino, son invitados a quedarse (estar en comunión) con él. El verdadero encuentro con el Señor resulta en unión espiritual con él. Cuando abandonamos nuestras maneras egoístas y permitimos que Dios reine en nuestras vidas, abrazamos un camino infinitamente mejor-el verdadero camino. El tomar de manera intencional esta opción nos conduce a una profunda transformación de nuestro corazón, y nos coloca muy bien en camino hacia lograr una vida de abundante paz y amor.

MASS FOR LIFE All are invited to virtually join the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Mass for Life on Friday, January 22! The Mass for Life will be livestreamed from Holy Name Cathedral. Celebrated by Bishop Kevin Birmingham, it will be held on the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade and the eve of the final event on the March for Life Chicago tour. The Mass will be streamed live on the Archdiocese of Chicago YouTube cannel.
