From the Pastor’s Desk… Within the Semitic understanding and the rabbinical ways of public discussions to sustain passionate debates and colorful philosophical argumentations in pubic was very common. To argue passionately was a way of showing interest, knowledge, and sagacity on a particular subject. When the Pharisees and Herodians dragged the name of Caesar into their line of argumentation they were not interested in the truth. Full of malice they try to entrap Jesus into a no-wining situation. Just like in our current society, to refuse paying taxes was considered an offense to the State. It was a statement against the status quo and therefore treason. On the other hand to speak in favor of taxes was betraying your own kind as you would justify the exploitation of the Jews by the Roman domination. (Things haven’t changed much for the Palestinian people.) So to pledge allegiance to one or the other was indeed a source of conflict and a dangerous situation. But the main problem here is not only the Pharisees and Herodians ill-will towards Jesus. That has been stated earlier in the gospels. The biggest issue at stake was that the question came from a group which not only pretended to remain with the money of the people, the image of Caesar affixed, but had also monopolized and appropriated the image of God. They, just like the economical Roman domination, exploited the Jews with their laws, rules, and religious regulations in an attempt to “please God” while devouring the houses of the little ones. Jesus, in his accustomed style of answering a question with another question, rises to the challenge. Not only arises to the occasion of rabbinical debate, but also establishes no demarcation between a good citizen and a good religious person. Jesus’ answer was not a division between the powers that be, but an urgent call to recuperate the image of God broken and lost in His people. His was a call for justice, equality, and liberation of the oppressed. The gospel reminds us that we are members of a higher reality, God’s kingdom, and members of our current reality, the society in which we partake. We have obligations to both. Now, tensions can exist and do exist between our loyalty to God and our duty to our country. We see that in the pro-choice and pro-life abortion controversy. We see it in the legalization of prostitution and drugs in certain states. We clearly see it in the infamous Zero tolerance involving the American Bishops, our judicial system and Canon Law. We see it in the treatment of our migrant community good enough to do our menial tasks but not to have a voice. Tensions do exist when matters of state do touch upon faith and morality. What to do therefore when these take place? I believe that we must take the very same rabbinical disposition of argumentation and philosophical illumination: selfless dialogue, intelligent exchange, compassionate communication, we must talk from a redeemed human being to a redeemed human being. We must also acknowledge that “faith must look like something” and that something is our reality. And just when we come into a point of conflict between the law of the Church and the law of the state we must remember who we are: the image of God among our dwellers, pilgrim people in this society moving towards God, kingly people, saintly people… priestly people. We must not forget the our future citizenship must be a reflection of our current state of life. “Give Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”

Dentro del entendimiento semita y las formas rabínicas de las discusiones públicas para sostener debates apasionados y coloridas discusiones filosóficas en público, era muy común. Argumentar apasionadamente era una forma de mostrar interés, conocimiento y sagacidad sobre un tema en particular. Cuando los fariseos y los herodianos rucluyeron el nombre de César a su línea de argumentación, no estaban interesados en la verdad. Llenos de malicia tratan de atrapar a Jesús en una situación de no ganar. Al igual que en nuestra sociedad actual, negarse a pagar impuestos fue considerado un delito para el Estado. Fue una declaración

contra el status quo y, por lo tanto, traición. Por otro lado, hablar en favor de los impuestos traicionaba al pueblo, ya que justificaba la explotación de los judíos por la dominación romana. (Las cosas no han cambiado mucho para el pueblo Palestino). Así que prometer lealtad a uno o al otro fue una fuente de conflicto y una situación peligrosa. El problema principal aquí no es solo la mala voluntad hacia Jesús de los fariseos y herodianos. Eso se ha visto anteriormente en los evangelios. La cuestión más importante estaba en juego: la pregunta procedía de un grupo que no solo pretendía quedarse con el dinero del pueblo, la imagen de César colocada, sino que también monopolizó y se apropió de la imagen de Dios. El evangelio nos recuerda que somos miembros de una realidad superior, el Reino de Dios y miembros de nuestra realidad actual, la sociedad en la que participamos. Tenemos obligaciones para ambos. Ahora, las tensiones pueden existir y existen entre nuestra lealtad a Dios y nuestro deber para con nuestro país. Vemos eso en la controversia pro-aborto y pro-vida. Lo vemos en la legalización de la prostitución y las drogas en ciertos estados. Lo vemos claramente en la infame Cero Tolerancia que involucra a los Obispos Americanos, nuestro sistema judicial y el Derecho Canónico. Lo vemos en el trato de nuestra comunidad migrante quienes son suficientemente buenos para hacer nuestras tareas serviles, pero no para tener una voz. Las tensiones existen cuando asuntos de estado afectan la fe y la moral. ¿Qué hacer, por lo tanto, cuando esto ocurre? Creo que debemos tomar la misma disposición rabínica de argumentación e iluminación filosófica: diálogo desinteresado, intercambio inteligente, comunicación compasiva, debemos hablar de un ser humano redimido a un ser humano redimido. También debemos reconocer que "la fe debe verse como algo" y que algo es nuestra realidad. Y justo cuando entramos en un punto de conflicto entre la ley de la Iglesia y la ley del estado, debemos recordar quiénes somos: la imagen de Dios entre nuestros habitantes, los peregrinos en esta sociedad que se mueve hacia Dios, el pueblo real, personas santas ... personas sacerdotales. No debemos olvidar que nuestra futura ciudadanía debe ser un reflejo de nuestro estado actual de vida. "Da a César lo que pertenece a César y a Dios lo que pertenece a Dios".

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS NOTICIAS DEL CATECISMO The Lord's Peace be with you!

As you probably already know, the Catholic Church honors those individuals who, whether canonized or not, are life worthy of the title of saint. Saint Aloysius Parish would like to invite you to join us on the morning of Saturday, October 28th for a Liturgy of the Word in honor of All the Saints. The service will take place at 9:45 A.M., and will be an opportunity to come together as a community of faith to honor those members of the Church reigning together in Heavenly Glory. We the Church Militant look up to these great models who in their earthly lives exhibited heroic virtue, and strive to imitate them in our pilgrimage to eternal salvation. The service will be primarily geared toward the children in our Religious Education program, and therefore will aim to teach them and their family through the Liturgy. We look forward to you joining us for this very special celebration!

¡La Paz del Señor esté con ustedes!

Como probablemente ya saben, la Iglesia Católica honra a aquellas personas que, ya sean canonizados o no, hayan tenido vida digna del título de santo. La Parroquia de San Luis Gonzaga quisiera invitarles a unirse a nosotros en la mañana del sábado, 28 de octubre para una Liturgia de la Palabra en honor de Todos los Santos. El servicio tendrá lugar a las 9:45 A.M., y será una oportunidad para reunirnos como una comunidad de fe en honor a los miembros de la Iglesia quienes reinan juntos en la Gloria Celestial. Nosotros la Iglesia Militante honoramos a estos grandes modelos quienes en su vida terrenal exhibieron virtudes heroicas, y nos esforzamos por imitarles en nuestro peregrinaje hacia la Salvación Eterna. El servicio será primordialmente orientado hacia los niños de nuestro programa de Educación Religiosa y sus familiares, y por lo tanto tendrá como objetivo enseñarles a través de la Liturgia. ¡Esperamos que nos acompañen para esta celebración muy especial!

The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets every Wednesday in the Thiele Center from 10am to noon. This group knits and crochets prayer shawls while praying individually and as a group for the recipient of each shawl. Shawls have been given to those facing challenging times, illness or to

Este grupo hace mantas de oración hechos de tejido o de ganchillo mientras rezan individualmente y como grupo para que el receptor de cada manta. Other beloved ones can be remembered during weekday mass. We will be accepting registrations until October 28.
