Five years ago, she stood up at a horse show meeting and said: “I’m getting older and getting tired. I need help.” Five people stepped up to the plate to offer their help. These co-chairs are: Steve Goldenberg, Suzanne Jain, Suzanne Rischman, Wendy Harries, and Linda Salvador. Each takes a different segment of duties. “My segment has always been (getting) sponsors,” says Ms. Glikbarg. “I start begging in January.” This year the show has 92 sponsors, the most ever. “I’m the organizer, but once the show starts, I’m the cheer- leader,” says Ms. Glikbarg. One event she doesn’t want to miss is hearing her daughter, Ellen Shea, sing the national anthem at the beginning of the ceremonies. Menlo Charity Horse Show opens Aug. 10 While many horse shows are seeing fewer entries, due to the economy, that’s not the case for the Menlo Charity Horse Show, which runs Aug. 10 to 15 at the Menlo Circus Club in Atherton. This year’s show has 100 more riders and horses signed up than last year, according to show spokesman Nan Chapman. Equestrians seem eager to take part in the top-rated show, which is celebrating its 40th year. Over the years, the show has received many accolades. In 2007, 2008 and 2009, sub-scribers to PhelpsSports.com named it “one of the best horse shows in North Amer-ica.” For more than 15 years, members of the Pacific Coast Hunter/Jumper Association have ranked it “Best in the West.” Focusing on hunters and jumpers competing in Olym-pic-style open-field jumping in three on-going arenas, the show has raised millions for the Vista Center for the

Blind and Visually Impaired, including $440,000 in 2009. In recognition of the show’s 40 years, local retailers have hosted events. The Rosewood Sand Hill hotel in Menlo Park was the setting for a recep-tion in June for sponsors and friends of the show. Michael Kors at Stanford Shopping Center will be the venue for a final kick-off party on Mon-day, Aug. 9. The Four Seasons Hotel, East Palo Alto, will host an exhibitors’ dinner on Aug. 12. The Windy Hill Larry May-field memorial ride and drive class, scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, is a new event this year. Other highlights of the show are the $10,000 Rector Audi/Ryman memorial speed jump-ing class, which begins at 6 p.m. Friday evening and the $40,000 Grand Prix at 6 p.m. Saturday night. The crowd-pleasing children’s (under 6) lead line class takes place around 1 p.m. Saturday in the

sand area. A gala dinner-dance and live and silent auctions are scheduled for Friday, Aug. 13, in the clubhouse. Among the items to be auctioned is an original collage created by the show’s official artist, Sam Price of San Francisco. Titled “Jubilee,” the art is valued at $5,000. Tickets to the gala are $225 per person. Complimentary valet parking will be pro-vided. For reservations, call Pam Perez at 857-0422. Food and beverages will be available on the club grounds and the club house and coffee shop will be open to the pub-lic during the horse show. Hours for the show are 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The Circus Club is located at 190 Park Lane in Atherton. Tickets are $10 per day, or $35 for a six-day pass. Chil-dren under 12 and seniors over 65 are admitted free. Go to menlohorseshow.com or call 701-0543 for more information.

‘Movie under Stars’ in Portola Valley The Portola Valley Cultural Arts Committee is inviting the community to watch a free movie “under the stars” on Friday, Aug. 20, at the courtyard lawn of the Portola Valley Town Center. “This event will be the first of its kind at the new town center,” said Deirdre Clark, co-chair of the committee. The movie, “Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl,” will be shown at 8 p.m.. Popcorn, sandwiches, non-alcoholic drinks and treats will be sold, she said. “Folks are encouraged to come at 6:30 to picnic, socialize and listen to music featuring CDs from local bands,” she said in an announcement. “We welcome your family and friends. Bring blankets and a picnic. All ages are welcome. Unfortunately, please leave your dogs at home.”

‘Supersize Me’ The Little House Activity Cen-ter in Menlo Park will have a free showing of the film, “Supersize Me,” at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3 in the Garden Room, Margaret Petitjean, a spokesperson for Little House, has announced. The film shows the dire effects

of the fast-food diet. Little House is at 800 Middle Ave. behind Nealon Park. “All our welcome,” she said. “It’s a must viewing for living healthy longer. Visit and pick up a program of Little House activities.”

Teens offer to pickfruits, vegetables As fall approaches, homegrown fruits and vegetables are sure to be in abundance. The Portola Valley Teen Committee is looking for people with excess fresh fruits and vegetables in their gardens and lots that might otherwise go to waste. The teens are offering to pick the fruits and vegetables and transport them to organizations that feed the needy, such as Second Harvest Food Bank in San Carlos. This new effort, called Sharing the Bounty, has the added ben-efit of keeping gardens and lots clean from fallen, rotting fruits, notes project spokesperson Sha-ron Driscoll. Contact her at [email protected] if you are willing to donate fruits and/or vegetables, or know someone who may be.

Woodside: Architect joins architecture review boardBy Dave BoyceAlmanac Staff Writer

The Woodside Town Coun-cil, in a unanimous vote, appointed resident and

architect Thalia Lubin to the town’s Architecture and Site Review Board at the council’s July 27 meeting. Ms. Lubin takes the now-empty seat of Glenn Atkinson, who resigned recently. Her term ends in February 2011. “She is an architect and the (ASRB) charter calls for there to be an architect” on the seven-member board, Councilwoman Anne Kasten said after the coun-cil’s interview of Ms. Lubin. Councilwoman Sue Boynton added that, “as an architect, I think she’ll be able to realize or visualize what the applicant is trying to achieve. I think that’s a very important component (of the process).” Bringing construction and design plans to the ASRB for review is a required step for new homes and major remodeling projects before they go on to the Planning Commission. Ms. Lubin told the council that she has been involved as an architect in at least 10 projects that went before the

ASRB. She is also on the town’s His-tory Commit-tee and is par-ticipating in this year’s task force of volunteers and staff who are

reviewing the town’s general plan, according to her application for the ASRB post. “I feel I would be a valuable addi-tion to the board,” Ms. Lubin said in her application. “Having rep-resented clients before the ASRB, I have an understanding of the process. I love Woodside and want to help ensure that it remains the special place that it is!” Ms. Lubin lobbied persistently and prominently for the preserva-tion of the Jackling house, a Jazz Age country home on Mountain Home Road now owned by Apple Corp. chief executive Steve Jobs and originally designed by noted architect George Washington Smith. After years in court battles, the path is apparently now clear for Mr. Jobs to have the house divest-ed of historically significant parts, dismantled and replaced with a modern home. A

Block party in downtown Menlo Park Menlo Park will hold its sec-ond and final block party of the summer on Wednesday, Aug. 11, featuring a performance by a Beatles tribute band. Santa Cruz Avenue will be

closed to traffic from El Camino Real to University Avenue. Res-taurants will extend tables into the street for plaza-style dining. Activities will include a chil-dren’s area and a community stage, where non-professional groups will perform. The “Old Tom” fire engine will be on hand for kids to explore and the city of Menlo Park will present displays from several departments. The block party is coordinated by the Menlo Park Chamber of Commerce.
